What most surprised me, though was the fact that it was much smaller than I had anticipated. After seeing it on the cover of "Mingus" I had expected it to be at least 3 feet in length, but as your catalog will verify, it's dimensions are 19 X 23 inches. Its image had seemed so large, but if I had looked closer at the album art I would have seen the tooth of the canvas peeking through some of the pigment, offering a cue to its scale. Well, it's not the size of the image that defines its importance or its impact. Hell, one of my favorites by Matisse is only the size of a greeting card! Conversely, the cover painting for WTRF was some 8' + in length. I love surprises like these when visiting galleries and museums. CC P.S. That catalog is amazing, isn't it? And all my little landscapes, All my yellow afternoons, Stack up around this vacancy Like dirty cups and spoons. -- JM I'll do your dishes anytime, Joni. ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 11 Aug 2000 14:26:9 +1000 From: john low Subject: Czech covers of Joni songs! Those inveterate seekers after rare covers of Joni songs might be interested in the following: I was visiting the Leonard Cohen Files website recently and came across a reference to a Czech folk rock band called “Marsyas” who recorded a song called “Leonard”, written by one its members about her experiences at a Cohen concert. The report went on to say that: “Marsyas was the most famous Czech folkrock group between 1975-85, playing mostly its original songs, but also some cover versions (in Czech or English) of Bob Dylan’s, Joni Mitchell’s, Neil Young’s, Band’s etc. songs. They recorded four albums … .” Now there’s a challenge for the “Covers Project”! Have you got any jmdl contacts in Czechoslavakia, Bob? Schmit playing a FOURTH bass! It was too much. Harry Shearer was especially hilarious, too. They had a new song that started out in hippy dippy Donovan style - something like "all the flower power people need is love" or something and then launched into the mega bass assault! > Anyone know the politics of the Eagles? I thought it was >great that Henley gave the guitar break on "My Thanksgiving" >to Leadon. But Meisner didn't join in on any of Henley's stuff. I remember them having their riffs but can't remember the details. I did notice something curious last night. During the Mercury Blues encore with everyone taking turns with the verses (it must have gone on 10-15 minutes) here was the set-up: King Henley out front and center, Schmit to far right stage and Meisner to way far left, almost off, stage. Meisner was almost hiding and someone, maybe Leadon was trying to coax him to take the mic and do a verse. Meisner was smiling but real, real shy and reticent. Someone finally kind of pulled him over to a mic and he would look like he was going to take a verse but then would back off. During this whole time he never took his eyes off Henley. I got the impression that he was almost afraid to do anything to tick Henley off or something. I do recall that when Meisner quit Poco, he was replaced by Schmit. And then later when Meisner quit the Eagles, he was again replaced by Schmit. Ah well, at least they all showed up ;-) Kakki ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 11 Aug 2000 02:06:46 -0400 From: "Jim L'Hommedieu" Subject: Rolling Stone Magazine: jt and Hef check in NJC james taylor is not touring soon. He says he likes Henley's philosophy of releasing albums when you have an album's worth of good stuff. (Good idea, but kinda "DUH!" Why do people quote Don Henley like he's the Messiah? His band recorded "Witchy Woman" after all! Yeech!) Hugh Hefner is interviewed. Here's a quote from Hef: "The great myth about sex and sexual instinct was always that if you bottle it up, it would go away," he says. "The truth is, if you let those instincts out, they won't haunt you anymore." He was supposedly a genius-level guy in school and developed a serious bent for philosophy. The interviewers take is that he's still railing against the morays of the 50's. Interviewer postulates, with great validity in my mind, that the revolution was a success: "The battle is over and Hefner has won. Because the (Playboy) Mansion has conquered the Earth..."
