And then fizzles out all together.") Aside from capturing my ear, Beth also captured my American dollar with her Celtic CD (when I was in N.O.). I put "Hybria Vigor" on again tonight after letting it rest for a few weeks and I'm struck again by the great sense of time on this cd. Did she use a click track, then wipe it off? Her singing and playing are so tight rhymically that she rocks even when it's just a bouzouki, a fiddle and her voice! It's all LOCKED some how. She stands in a clear white light. What do you know about Beth's album, Paz? Details! I never would have bought a Celtic album on purpose but this is cool! Hey (- who knew-?) I like Celtic stuff! Every bit of the backing vocals are carefully done too! Wonderful shifting harmonies are there and gone as rapidly as they rose up. Light and beautiful like an Emmylou Harris album. (Note to list- Beth's picture is on http://www.jmdl.com/jonifest/jfno2000.cfm If you'd like a cassette copy of this CD- hold your breathe! BUY IT!!) All the best, Jim L'Hommedieu near Cincinnati BTW, is Kakki the best PR person any artist could ask for? I think you should consider asking her to contribute to the liner notes of the Foundation's Joni project. I love how she lets you know where she's coming from even before she starts her post- when she starts with "OH MY MY", you just KNOW she's over the moon about something. :) This List, and recently, this small group of N.O. partiers, is WAY important to me. Some girls have all the luck! So glad you're there as our eyes, ears and heart. <> Sweet! Gives me chills to vision this. I caught McGuinn when he opened for Tom Petty at the SF Fillmore Auditorium in '97. His set was something else. I remember my knees getting weak as he went into Eight Miles High. I never thought I'd hear that live by the man himself, at the historic Fillmore no less. Wasn't that where they filmed The Last Waltz? So good to see Crosby in full swing, man! CSNY, CPR, and now this. What a resurrgence for this man. Gotta love him. Jeff Bridges was there? I saw him standing in with Michael McDonald at the Marin Music Fest a few weeks back. Michael called him to the stage to everyone's surprise. Seems he and McDonald have established a label, and "the Dude's" own CD is one of the first titles. Jeff's acoustic guitar stylings are impassioned, yet uninspired. Thinking of his performance and the ovation he got, I couldn't help but recall Cybill Shepard's line to Bridges' character in Bogdanovich's classic "The Last Picture Show": "Quit prissin', you probably didn't even do it right." Funny thing is, I had seen Cybill's lounge act at a hotel in SF just a week before. A hoot, that was. She's funny, in a bawdy sort of way. Not a bad pair of lungs on her. That is to say, she's a pretty good singer. Really. Funny Valentine...theme from Moonlighting, etc. Plus funny sexy jokes while she laid across the grand piano, ala the "Fabulous Baker Boys." But that's a digression and a half... Anyways...Thanks for the memories! Looking forward to the sequel! - -Julius ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 10 Aug 2000 03:43:20 -0700 From: "Kakki" Subject: Walecki Benefit - Night Two (NJC) Ah, what a great couple of sleep-deprived days and nights! ;-) It just got better tonight. No big surprises like the Byrds again, but the whole bunch seemed more relaxed and still grooving very much on the high of last night. The set list was pretty much the same with a few changes made to mix it up a bit. JMDL'ers there tonight included Darice, Rick, Clark, Ken Corral and Steve Jonnum. We were all within close waving and yelling distance. Last night I was 9th row center and tonight in 4th row center. Very nice. I really wish there were recordings of both nights for not only the amazing music but also for the wonderfully funny quips and heartfelt stories about Fred Walecki. I think the heavens designated Fred as the Chief Guardian Angel for musicians. No hype, this is a truly special person who seems to bring out the very best in everyone. I spent a little time talking with him tonight and in just a few seconds I was completely moved by his heart and humanity. He is a gentle giant among us. I had endless fun at the afterparty tonight and will be glowing and floating the rest of the week. Chatted with Albert Lee, Colin Hay, Freebo and Glyn Johns and resumed my chats from last night with Henry Diltz (another angel, I think) and Jeff Pevar. A memorable image of Henry tonight was watching him spend a long time carefully posing and photographing Bernie Leadon and old girlfriend Patti (Reagan) Davis together arm and arm. Interesting. Last night Pevar and I were hyperventilating together like 8 year olds over the Byrds "reunion". Tonight we were still carrying on and wide-eyed and babbling to each other about it. He said that it may never happen again and how lucky we were to witness it. I told him to tell Crosby that they made my life last night. Croz showed up at the party but was very swamped by the glitterati, and spent a long time talking to actress Rebecca De Mornay and her friend. I wanted to say hi but didn't want to make my way through the crowd of heavyweights. Darice did get to chat with him and many others - she charmed everyone she met and got an old 45 autographed by Warren Zevon. Probably my favorite experience of the night was going up to someone who I thought was Ry Cooder and shyly asking if it was indeed him. The guy said in a Mississippi drawl "Well thank you, I WISH I were Ry Cooder - that's the main reason I came to this." He was very friendly and mentioned he used to do music but has been out of the business for years. But, he said, he didn't know any of the musicians there and was a bit older than all of them. I finally asked him if he'd ever been in a group and he said yes, but that I was probably too young to remember them. Very modestly he said he had been in the group "Hamilton, Joe Frank and Reynold" and he was Joe Frank. I started singing "Don't pull your love out on me baby" and he said "YES." Told him I was surprised that he didn't know at least Croz or a few of the others. He said "no, the only one who knows me is him" and pointed to Henry Diltz. I said Henry knows everybody and we all cracked up. Joe Frank's a great guy. I forgot to mention Jeff Bridges in my set list earlier. He's a childhood school chum of Fred and also buddies with the rest of the gang (Bonnie, Jackson, et al.) I've heard that he is a songwriter/musician on the side but had never heard him play. He is just as gorgeous in person and very outgoing and sweet but I have to agree with Julius' assessment of his musical performance. Sorry Jeff! ;-) But it was great to see him there - seems like a truly good guy. And you Emmylou fans - I must tell you that she is probably the sweetest of them all to the fans. She signed endless autographs and posed for photos both nights, arriving first and being almost the last to leave. Linda again was utterly amazing and had the woman sitting next to me sobbing after tonight's performance of Heart Like A Wheel. And I misheard the name of her niece - it's Melinda ("Mindy") Ronstadt and she also has a voice from the heavens. Bonnie did not show up at the parties but she worked so hard both nights and gets my vote as the most witty and engaging stage presence. This was my first time to see her live and she really is a superstar on every level. Oh and for the finale the surprise guest was Arlo Guthrie who shared a mic with Jeff Bridges and Colin Hay! Everyone started taking photos during the finale so I snapped off a few. Hope they come out. This was an amazing couple of nights and the most amazing thing is that all the "famous" there very obviously were just as giddy and high over it all as the rest of us. Good vibrations...the very best. The Emmylou Harris/Chris Hillman song was indeed written by Gram Parsons, "Wheels." Besides the reunion of the Byrds (incredible!) the other stunner for me was hearing Graham sing a heartfelt version of his lovesong to Joni (from "Songs For Beginners") - "Lady of the Island." You could have heard a pin drop. The love in the room, for Fred Walecki, from the audience for the performers, beyond belief. And it felt so good. The only bitter part of the evening for me was that my friend who treated Steve and I to the tickets could not attend. His daughter was rushed Monday evening to the emergency room with 104 fever - turns out she has mono. Fifteen minutes before the concert my brother was selling (at a huge discount) Bob's 9th row seats in front of the auditorium - he almost got arrested! It was very sad that Bob couldn't attend the show and share the evening - he also has to cancel the family vacation next week to Hawaii. It has a new cover (a more recent smiling Joni) and updates the story to this year, just up to the release of the Both Sides Now CD. For those of you with the earlier(1996) edition, this one appears to have about 10 extra pages and doesn't seem to correct any of the obvious clangers (he still thinks "wear your suspenders" in See You Sometime refers to JT's cross dressing!). Although I think he now concedes that Joni did not, after all, have a baby when she was 52. I was pleased to see that there are several mentions of Wally Breese and the web page, especially its role in Joni and Kilauren getting together. No mention of the discussion line by name but a few mentions of the Internet. He quotes someone on the Internet saying that his book was better than nothing. Anyone own up to that? Paul is confusing intelligence with technical ability and the possession of high-tech equipment. Some people probably wouldn't know how to provide a hyperlink to save their life and up until a few months ago, I would have been one of them (what the hell is a hyperlink?). This doesn't make them unintelligent. And some people on the list don't have internet access even though they have e-mail, so this wouldn't help them. I knew this was going to be good, when I got the call asking if I wanted to work the Tuesday night show. I already had a ticket and cast party for Weds. night. I got to the Santa Monica Civic about 5:00 and checked in as a "volunteer I thought I was going to get to usher but the powers that be decided that I was to sell t-shirts for the show. Well, I got to talk to more people but could only hear most of the show. When I first entered SMCC, I heard the sound check going on. It was a REALLY good version of Mr Tambourine MAn and I suddenly realized that there was ROGER singing lead, an unannounced extra guest. The show started at 8:15 and with a very short break ended a little after midnight.Others have given some of the highlights; here are mine. Hearing Jackson singing My Opening farewell with Bonnie Raitt and then doing "Bright Baby Blues" the BYRDS reunion(got to see that one) a two song standing ovation full of excitement, nostaglia and great music. Spinal Tap could have been heard all the way to Malibu, but was great fun. Emmylou bouncing on stage while Linda R sang For a Dancer. Linda explaining she had arrived late and did not get to do a soundcheck, but all the musicains on stage (even those she had n;t played with before were great) Emmylou telling Linda "all you have to do is sing" And then Linda sang with her niece "heart like a wheel " and I was crying. Cheered up during Don Henley's set, but had to miss most of the Mercury Blues encore; David Lindley was sick but Wally I offered to run the t-shirt booth so I could go "see" Warren Zevon's set. The "cast" party lasted until after 1:00pm. What happened to this list? I think the list could be much more challenging and fun. Usually I just scan the topics and DELETE. There used to be really interesting discussions about Joni Mitchell, the great towering highest of artists, remember? I don't know what the topic is now. Shall I propose having Two lists? One JMDL Digest and then another NJCDL - SJCDL Digest???? So maybe we should try to get 'back to the garden' here and use this artist to learn about ourselves, our culture and a bit about the future. We need to keep listening to the gift. There is a wealth of material here!!!! And I think Ms.Mitchell would find this uninspired reading. So one idea could be to just listen to Joni's words, say take "Dog Eat Dog" for instance - look at the lyrics of "Tax Free" - Front Rooms Back Rooms Slide into tables Crowd into back rooms Joke Around Cheap Talk Deep Talk, talk, talk around the clock Lie Down Teeth Chatter Heart pound I don't feel so good I don't feel so good Push a button to escape Preacher on the tube crying "Lord!" There's evil in this land..... This is a song about corrupt evangelism in the 1980s, written quite a bit before this subject was Big news copy. I find it interesting that Join has this sly, intuitive voice that frequently comes in way before the crowd does. Tax Free, partially quoted above is a haunting and difficult piece sung in Joni's best character voice. Listen to it. Listen to that whole album which is one of her most unpopular collections but I think one of her best. Joni is a great writer! Joni is a great musician! Joni is, as we all know a big talker with a highly opinionated voice - so let us respect that and talk. I remember listening to DED in 1985 and thinking she is really making little plays -these songs are like small theater pieces and she is yelling and mad - she is ranting and raving. First side especially. See how there are so many things to think about and talk about when you have Join Mitchell as the headliner, the Main subject??? Joni the Prophet - a good subject. Soothe sayer. Joni Political. Joni the terrorist. Joni The liar...whatever! I remember a few years back there was a long thread of discussion about Joni, Sylvia Plath and Emily Dickinson, maybe some Anne Sexton thrown in and that was memorable. She is so real and sincere and at the same time so quick-witted and entertaining. Yes, oh yes, it was incredible and took all the air out of the room. It was the best I've EVER heard him - whether on album or live. Even though McGuinn did not show last night, Crosby, Nash, Hillman and Pederson performed a GORGEOUS acoustic, slowed-down ballad-like version of Turn, Turn, Turn with Bernie Leadon playing McGuinn's part fabulously. New Jimdle signs up for life Hi Folks, Great to join up at last. I'm a long time Joni fan who's been there from the first album but only just got the technology in my part of the world ( an island on the west coast of Scotland ). It has been one long and amazing journey and Joni's words ( and music) have taken me to places in my heart and mind that no other writer has. A "painter of pictures" indeed. As the introductory email says " the greatest songwriter on the planet", I'll second that unreservedly. Like most Joni fans ( I guess ) we tend to live in a bit of a musical vaccuum with few friends on the same Joni wavelength, their loss. So it's great to meet up with some like-minded folk. I'd like to take this opportunity to post my appreciation of Wally and all he did for the Joni community. I managed to visit his site a few times and friends would send me print outs of his pages. I had hoped to get "online " and thank him personally, sadly that was not ot be. I'm just grateful to be here. I look forward to participating in the future but will be "lurking" for a wee while to see what's going on. Many thanks for reading...... The other two verses are similar] However I never have considered Joni to be a Lyricist as much as she is a poet. theres a big difference. The reason why so many of Jonis lines dont have the perfect rhyme or meter is because of that. In my review of DED I came to the conclusion that the words to Three Great Stimulants were actually very profound as I so stated. I just didnt get it until after a number of subsequent listenings. same with Fiction. there's alot there in the words. Good Friends of course I consider a classic "no meaning" song. Perhaps it's a latent form of musical snobbery. =). In any event, I'm happy to finally be here. And lo and behold, look what you fine folks have done for yourselves as far as tape trading goes! I'm impressed. I met the late Wally Breese through an ad I took in Goldmine magazine in 1994. He sent me his list, and as you might imagine, I felt as though I'd hit the lottery. As the site became more demanding, and Wally's health grew worse (alas), our phone/pen pal relationship dwindled, as did our tape trading. I too think of Wally every day, for the way he touched my life, and for what he did for those of us devoted to Joni. I think I speak for us all in expressing this gratitude. I'm feeling a little left out as far as the trading 'trees' go, and wonder if anyone would be willing and kind enough to help me with the following: Tape Tree #8, CD Tree #1, and Video Tree #1. I don't have as many goodies as I used to, but I've some recordings of interest, and certainly would be happy to cover all supplies. I'm also in search of Paris 6/'72, and Philidelphia 8/21/'74, the first night, which I believe has that wonderful electric 'Barangrill.' Please let me know.
