All are now past their sell by date but here goes anyway. Two days a week I work in an independent record shop. The rest of the time I spend making music or helping others to make music, encouragement and guidance, promoting etc...(sometimes called management, but not by me),running a few web sites and mailing lists and driving the gear to the gigs.Currently I'm in the process of setting up a Record Label,but... ...The main bulk of that time is spent running an MP3 site ! Victor - a Rush fan,wow (BTW good name ;)) but don't forget "Suddenly-You were gone From all the lives You left your mark upon I remember- How we talked and drank Into the misty dawn - -I hear the voices We ran by the water On the wet summer lawns - -I see the footprints I remember- - -I feel the way you would" Afterimage Or "I don't believe in destiny or the guiding hand of fate I don't believe in forever or love as a mystical state I don't believe in the stars or the planets or angels watching from above but I believe there's a ghost of a chance we can find someone to love and make it last" Ghost of a Chance I haven't seen these covers mentioned, but haven't checked out the site yet so apologies if they are known. Fred Hersch - My Old Man Kiki Dee - Carey Diamond Head - This Flight Tonight The latter are friends of mine, the band responsible for Metallica(sorry) I should say a cover of the Nazareth version really, but it was done as a surprise for me and is therefore close to my heart - so no slagging :) There were probably loads of other things I was going to say,but I guess that'll do for now. I don't know the titles to some of the songs - most were not given - so I'm guessing at some (Leslie, Steve help me out ;-) Randy Meisner & Friends: Already Gone; Take It To The Limit Colin Hay (what a funny, entertaining guy and still a great performer): Company of Strangers; Day After Day Warren Zevon and Jackson Browne: Grab Ahold; Fistful of Rain; Rock Steady (dedicated to Fred); Johnny Strikes Up The Band Bonnie Raitt and Jackson: Next Voice You Hear; Opening Farewell (gorgeous); Are You Ready For The Thing Called Love; Give It Up Or Let It Go. Bonnie had the best commentary of the night. Crosby, Nash, Pevar and Raymond: Lady of the Island; Deja Vu; Taken At All; Wooden Ships. Breathtakingly gorgeous acoustic set with Nash especially in top voice and Pevar taking these older songs to new magical dimensions. The second biggest standing ovation of the night. Then the schock to the system - Spinal Tap! Lord knows the real titles but they were something like: Heavy Duty; Big Bottom and another indecipherable one. Fully leaded and funny comic relief. Chris Hillman and Herb Peterson: The Old Crossroads (Christian Bluegrass song from the 1930s) The Byrds - Roger McGuinn, Chris Hillman and David Crosby: Mr. Tambourine Man, Turn, Turn, Turn. The stunner of the night. Emmylou Harris and Chris Hillman: Emmylou fans please forgive me, I'm not that familiar with her tunes but it sounded like they may have done a Gram Parsons song. Emmylou and Linda Ronstadt: I'm not sure here but something like I Get Lonely When You're Loved and In The Hour of Gold and Jackson's For a Dancer Linda Ronstadt (her voice has never been better) and her niece Linda Ronstadt (sings like an angel) - Duet on Heart Like a Wheel. This one also brought down the house. Don Henley: Boys of Summer; My Thanksgiving (new song); Desperado. Sang his heart out. Everyone for finale: Mercury Blues (with everyone taking turns with the verses); Stand By Me (with Ry Cooder leading everyone). Producer John Simon recalls, regarding the rehearsals for "The Last Waltz" involving many guest artists and songs The Band had to learn for the occasion: "No one but Garth [Hudson] read music, so I had to arrange and work with The Band to learn the songs. Everything was complicated. Bob Dylan was expected to show up any minute to rehearse, but never actually made it. Henry Glover, Allen Toussaint, and Tom Malone worked on the horn charts. Joni Mitchell came to rehearsals and couldn't name the weird tunings her songs were written in, so Garth had to figure out the chords." The setlists are well documented for the 64 tour and of course I failed to post that it was in Detroit that I saw them before the family packed up the family 65 Belair station wagon and drove to Honduras (just under 5000 miles) through New Orleans and my first Mardi Gras (when they were still throwing glass beads). I don't remember the setlists, but I do remember thinking I wanted to be Paul or John when I grew up. I've missed him every time he's come around to my area. I'll bet that's a great show to see." Eric- I saw McCartney on his last world tour when they came to New Orleans during Jazz Fest. He played a show in the Superdome and it was fantastic. He sounded like he was 23 years old again. I was on crutches at the time (I had taken a spill at Jazz Fest) and had to walk a mile from whre we parked the car, but I made it. I managed to sneak past security (being a handicapped person and all) to get all the way to the second row for about 5 songs including All My Loving (one of my faves). I thought the sound was fab at the show, but some friends who were not on the floor said it sucked. I went with one of my oldest friends (who I play tons of Beatles songs with on a regular basis) Dan and my wife and we all ended up in tears during Yetesrday. I have a great shot of Paul from that show that was given to me by Joni Mitchell/Sarah MaLachlan/Peter Gabriel/Robbie Robertson/Daniel Lanois/Sinead Lohan/etc. guitarist-guitorganist Bill Dillon. If anybody out there has a really good copy that can make another really good copy I would really love it (really!;-) I have a modest tape list that can be perused for a trade or I would be happy to do a blank and postage for the dupe. Anyone? Thanks for your time. Modesty forbids me from saying who it is... but undoubtedly some idiot who has not a damn thing else to do with his time... We have had many different types of plugs on this list with various degrees of affection or lack thereof... so as I do not record, write plays, do performance art, or anything else that people pay for.... if you would like to help support a Joni Mitchell fan get elected, a check in any amount can be sent to Friends of R. Vincent Lavieri, PO Box 100, Greenville MI 48838 - and I need you to send me your profession for the campaign finance forms. If you think this is a shameful, despicable act of huckstering, I agree, and it shall never happen again by me. You can send your protests to me and not clutter the JMDL with comments on what a jerk I am. We all know that anyway. If you think this is a shameful politicizing of the JMDL, well, I am sorry, I probably agree and will never ask again. I've had real doubts about doing this but I will and take my lumps, I guess, let you all yell at me, and also accept any contributions that may come my way. Thank you, I apologize, I am sorry, won't happen again, and I am out of here... All of this is pure speculation of course and the real answer probably lies in some kind of unquantifiable synergy, but it seems that an important player has not been recognized: Larry Klein. Joni had referred to him in many interviews as a " sound guy." Since the more consistent use of synthesizers began with WTRF, her first record made with Klein (if you don't count the ARP on the studio version of "Shadows and Light") and continued through CMIARS (which other than "Dancin' Clown" had no credited Dolby content although I think he had a hand in the drum sounds on "The Tea Leaf Prophecy), they seem to indicate the strong presence of evolving collaboration between Joni and Klein. The use of synths seemed to take a hiatus when Joni rediscovered her organic sound on NRH and began to resurface on TI once the technology brought it straight to Joni's fretboard. Experimentation with orchestral guitar became a much more intimate, internalized and private event: so much closer to the muse. CC - --Recognize this? Reduce your LSD intake and go back to smoking a little doob and mellowing out and just listen to the music and try not to go so deep. I'm sure even the ever opinionated Joni Mitchell would scream with laughter at your excellent adventure thru DED. You have outdown yourself again maestro. Can't wait for the other 19 albums, but I must warn you be careful with FTR or I'll come over there and kick your ass.
