(AP) - Singer Carly Simon posted $250,000 bail for one of her backup singers after his arrest at Newark International Airport on cocaine charges. John Forte was charged July 13 with conspiring to distribute nearly 31 pounds of cocaine. Prosecutors say they have taped telephone conversations in which Forte, 25, referred to the cocaine as "ice cream" and arranged to pick up the shipment at the airport. Federal agents arrested him after he was handed a suitcase by two women, authorities said. Forte was charged with conspiracy to distribute the cocaine. A federal magistrate set bail for Forte at $625,000 and Simon posted $250,000 of it last week. Forte was placed under house arrest at his mother's home in South Brunswick. Forte sang backup during Simon's last tour. Forte also co-produced the Fugees' hit record "The Score" in 1996 and sang on a solo album released by Fugees singer Wyclef Jean. - -- why are they called apartments when they are all stuck together? http://www.geocities.com/tantra_apso/index.html http://www.tantra.fsbusiness.co.uk ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 03 Aug 2000 22:40:14 +0100 From: catman Subject: a priest's first time NJC A new priest at his first mass was so nervous he could hardly speak. To me, she is a great storyteller and the ultimate songwriter, too. Blue and For the Roses were the two I credit the most for guiding me in the direction of literature and poetry. Perhaps the greatest thing about teaching for me was seeing improvement in students' writings when they finally realize that there is no right and wrong in writing, and that spelling and punctuation don't count nearly as much as so many teachers in their past led them to believe. Most of Joni's early stuff to me is so precious that I view them like I do James Taylor's best stuff: songs that don't follow an inflexible pattern, but grow and twist and build to that most magnificent of endings. Even songs that are built around a basic folk pattern can do that, thinking of Talking Old Soldiers by Elton John, or Taxi by Harry Chapin. I'm now studying web design and working part time for a property management company. I would like to know what others are using to put music on web pages: Real Audio, streaming technology with Real Producer, or MP3's, or ??? Thanks in advance for sharing. Maybe someone knows of a great web site that explains what all is available, and the pros and cons of each one. It's been very interesting seeing what everyone's career is. The odd thing about the Napster thing is that I would just bet that they could charge for the service, pay a reduced royalty (agreed upon by both parties), and it would still be wildly successful. I know I was tickled to hear a song on TV (Reasons Why by Nickel Creek), download the song and be jamming with it within minutes. And yes, it did convince me to buy the cd. I'd be willing to pay a few dollars every time I heard a great song like that that I wanted to learn. But I think someone's suggestion of Strawberry Fields Forever is as good an example as exists in the Beatle canon, and don't agree with IVPAUL who questioned its sincerity. I might have this wrong, but I was under the impression that Lennon grew up near an orphanage named Strawberry Fields, and, given the early loss of his mother and his sad childhood the place/name has special resonance for him. That song is as beautiful, and as ambitious, unusual, and sincere, as any Lennon wrote, and I'm fairly sure that he felt it was among his very best and most personal. When I was 12, we lived across from a sandlot where one morning I awoke to see trucks parked in the middle, peeking through the fog. As the fog lifted I could see the truck cabs all said "Midway Amusements, Flemington NJ." A traveling carnival set itself up there, rides and tents unfolding from the trucks like origami, strings of lights, wheels of fortune: the whole gig. I screwed up my courage and asked the flowsy matron who was in charge of the thing (she wore curlers, a tank top and a fuscia prize feather boa, I kid you not) if she had any work for me. In between drags of her cigarette, she asked the guy running the tent next to her trailer if he needed help. He said he did, and she told him to pay me 2 bucks a night to reset the "cats" in their shelf bases so patrons hurling baseballs wouldn't have to wait so long for a full target. That was my first job. I only got beaned once. The carnival was dynamic: thrilling and sexy, dirty and glamorous. I smoked my first cigarettes between the truck trailers in the dusty shadow of flickering florescents and to the sounds of screams, Allis-Chalmer tractor engines powering the rides and the clicking of the fortune wheels. Local girls wearing bandanas tied like halter tops around neck rings flirted with tattooed "carnies" who arrived on motorcycle to wherever the setup traveled. Introduction To Hormones, big time. I can't describe how sad I was when they folded up and moved on. I traced the footprint of the deserted compound for days. Once a carnie, always a carnie. It was a heartfelt, sincere wish for good things and faith to carry on. But it was more. It was a song with an extremely long fade that shattered the 3 minute barrier that for so long was the iron rule in pop radio. It was hypnotic, beautiful, and a wonderful piece of rock 'n roll scat singing ala Little Richard. Before Yesterday was covered by the whole world (and became a cliché of sentiment DUE TO THE EXPOSURE) it was a heartfelt and deep exploration by Sir Paul. Until this time, the Beatles stood for "loud and uptempo". Yesterday was out of character and therefore it was the very essence of 'ambitious'. If John and George Martin had not had their muse as their shining, guiding light, Yesterday would never have been released. - ----------- Bob (Murphycopy@aol.com) proposed Yesterday. My sister who is now 53 did see the fab four in concert at Cleveland stadium in I believe '64. She said you couldn't hear them because of all of the screaming. When we were kids we had to share a bed. So I can honestly say that I slept with someone who saw the Beatles in concert.
