["Kakki" Subject: First Joni I'm trying in my mind to assemble the elements that were present when I was first exposed the work of Joni. I was fairly young, 15 or 16, and making heavy weather of getting through school. Not the most popular kid, most nights would find me walking home from school rather than take the school bus and the attendant abuse. It is strange, on reflection, how I did not feel like I was being 'picked on' or that it was unfair. Being a little dense at the time, I assumed it was just my lot in life. (What!?!) However, that is not the point of the mail. My mate Derek, lent me a tape of Miles of Aisles because he thought that JM was 'quite good'. I was determinedly into Black Sabbath and Yes and, while awash with those hormone thingies and exploding skin, I could not see myself being moved by some girlie wailing over a guitar. But I was being disingenuous, even while the thoughts took form in my mind, because I can distinctly remember hearing In France they Kiss on Main Street on the radio at the time and being enormously impressed by how it shimmered in sound and lyric. Well the tape opened with 'You Turn Me On', which I'd heard before and twitched a little over hearing again, but by the time I got to 'Cactus Tree' a new life had begun. It was as complete and irrevocable as that. I stopped the tape and played Cactus Tree again, and then a time or ten more before letting it spin on through 'Cold Blue Steel', 'Blue' and 'Last Time I saw Richard'. I was pole-axed. I am not going to pretend that I listened to half of the words or understood the references. I was a country kid from the deep and remote highlands of Scotland and all this was a little alien to me. I'd certainly not been in love at this point - that was still some twenty years away - but the sound she made, the music, the chords - christ, just everything. It was like being delivered of a box of jewels. Points of perfection to gaze upon with wonder. After that, I had a still point in my life to which I could retreat from the juvenile world around me and music to become the soundtrack (as someone so excellently put it) to my young life. There was no way I could leave the house in the morning to go to school without listening to a couple of Joan-bits which I could then play back in my mind when lessons or peer torment failed to engage. Yes and Black Sabbath? Who they? So MOA is very important to me as my 1st JM exposure although so much that she has done since is more so. I wonder how common a feeling it is to want to discover her work all over again and that slight feeling of envy for those about to embark. I wonder too if the concurrency of one's own circumstances plus the exposure to her work has given weight to its importance. Well, it was bound to have been a factor. I consider it one of the "mini-masterpieces". I love the way she sings it, the way she gasps for breath between lines, the way she phrases it ("and the more he talked to me, you know, the more he reached me, but I …). It builds up such drama--this is what hooked me. It has all the Hallmarks of classic Joni: (1) enigmatic lyrics, (2) great storytelling, (3) passionate, distinct singing and phrasing, (4) personal confession, (5) subtle and refined musical accompaniment. All encapsulated into a 2 1/2 minute song! Could she actually sit down at an acoustic piano and still sing this, or am I dreaming and delusional? I understand her next album is going to be more re-recordings of previous material. Any thoughts on what this may be (besides the ones she did on the last tour)? I never did drugs either. A co-worker of mine once gave me a joint as a birthday present (she used to sell mj to a few people and our birthdays were close together, and she had a sick sense of humour.) I took it home, lit it, smoked the whole thing. Nothing happened. I was never against it, just never was interested in doing it. Especially that business of sharing one amongst a group of people (yech! germs!) As some have already said here, I don't like the idea of masking pain by using something else. I get a lot of headaches and at one time my doctor gave me a prescription for some drug (I don't remember the name) but all it seemed to do was mask the pain - it didn't get rid of the headache. And I felt spacey all the time. I'd rather have the headache and at least know that I'm in touch with the real world. Like many people in their late teens and early twenties, I used to think it was fun to drink. But once I got so drunk that I don't remember part of what happened that particular evening and it wasn't that I had passed out - I don't pass out - I just don't remember part of that evening *at all*. Fortunately I was with good friends, so nothing really bad happened - - but I got freaked out that I didn't remember. I don't care for that feeling so that even though I enjoy a good beer buzz every now and then, I can't drink the way I once used to, and I no longer want to. I can understand marijuana, even though I personally never got into it. And I don't think it leads to harder stuff - I know plenty of people who smoke grass but have never even considered doing anything else. The thing I don't get is cocaine and heroin and so on - - I can understand that people get addicted, but what I don't understand is why they'd want to bother with trying it in the first place (in which case, they wouldn't get addicted). Anyone I've seen high on coke always seems miserable and boring and/or stupid (and they've got that white powder and snot and stuff coming out their noses, which makes it ever so much more glamorous!) I figure, if I'm going to make an ass of myself (what? moi?), I at least want to *know* that I'm being an ass, and enjoying it at the time. ===== Catherine (in Toronto) catrin_of_aragon@yahoo.ca _______________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? That's another one I miss. 'Northern Exposure' truly was one of the best things ever to air on network tv. It was filmed in Roslyn, Washington up in the Cascades. It's a kick to go up there & walk down Main Street. There's the Brick Tavern, the ad for the Roslyn('s) cafe with the camel, the building where the radio station was, Ruth's General store - it's all there. All you really need is the moose! Mark in Seattle ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 27 Jul 2000 21:34:10 EDT From: RoseMJoy@aol.com Subject: Re: Vinyl's and my bro Richard (long) NJC I lost my brother Richard to aides coupled with lung cancer on Christmas Eve a year and 1/2 ago. I'll never get over losing this one guys. He was my best friend. What hurts the most is that he died alone. He had just come back from the VA hospital for a chemo treatment. He was supposed to spend Christmas with me. Richard loved Christmas. I somehow knew it was going to be the last, so I was busy decorating my place. I wanted everything to be just right. I was on my way home from work and stopped by the Italian bakery to pick up some canoles for dessert. When I walked in the door my husband Jim brokedown and gave me the bad news. I dropped everything I had in my arms and collapsed on the floor. I had to travel to PA that evening to keep vigil over my brother's body until the funeral agents got there. His friends were there when I arrived. They broke the door down when Richard wasn't answering the phone. He died intestate. (without a will) This man saved everything. There was a collection of about 400 vinyl's from the 60's and 70's. He lived in an apartment, so we had little time to vacate. It took us weeks to go through everything. He was also a collector of antiques and had a beautiful collection of painting by a local PA artist. I almost sold the collection at auction but then decided to keep it as well as his turntable. I'm very cluttered here as I kept a lot of Richard's things, but glad nonetheless that I changed my mind.( the sentimental slob that I am) I also found a pair of Woodstock tickets! He was older than me by seven years but we were very close. I remember always breaking into his room when we lived at home to listen to his wonderful collection of music. I have just about everything except for the "white Album." That one seems to be missing. I can only relate too well to what Jim Johanson is going through right now. I know he's really busy these days still sorting through wally's affairs. Anyone who can spare a few extra bucks, please don't hesitate to send it his way. I know for a fact he could use our help right now as he has some hefty legal expenses. Wally must have had so much stuff! Please make no mention of this. He'll get pissed. I miss my brother terribly. (sigh) I can still see him dancing about acting silly and snapping his fingers to the music. He was my joy, he always made me laugh. Sorry for depressing you, but I had to share that with you. You guys are like an extended family to me. Life is fragile, savor every moment. Catgirl ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 27 Jul 2000 22:56:07 -0700 From: "Kakki" Subject: Synchro - Johnstons cover and Mendel Book? Today was a great day for Joni goodies. Our sweet Coyote Rick stopped by to deliver precious cargo from his trip to Saskatoon and I also received in the mail the mint vinyl of The Johnston's "Both Sides Now" album first brought to my attention by our Irish Philip. I found an interesting link between the two events - I listened to The Johnston's at lunch today. The first thing that came to mind was "Graham Nash leaves The Hollies to midwife The Christy Minstrels meets The Cowsills with a brogue." It's a fine album and very reminiscent of the time. Also includes covers of two of my favorite songs which were staples in my teenage sing-alongs - "Wherefore and the Why" by Gordon Lightfoot, and "Hey That's No Way To Say Goodbye" by Leonard Cohen (also covered gorgeously by Judy Collins). So I get curious about this album put out by "Tetragrammation Records in Beverly Hills, CA". The brief liner notes are by a Nathan Joseph who is also listed as the producer. I've never heard of this record label or Mr. Joseph. Then tonight, I'm poring over the Mendel book and find this blurb from Joni next to one of her abstract paintings - "From 1977 to '87 I sublet a loft in New York City from an abstract expressionist named Nathan Joseph. Nathan's medium was galvanized metal corroded by acids and the elements and a garden hose. We shared a roof of a Soho building and over time became like family. In the early '80s my subject matter remained figurative but eventually his work influenced me towards the abstract - mainly because of the surfaces. His surfaces seemed to be growing while my paint seemed to be just lying there - flat. I abandoned the brush and began to roll the paint onto the canvases with fruit-juice jars and rolling pins. It struck me as funny to be using such feminine tools in such a macho field." Well, I have no idea if this is one and the same Nathan Joseph but it is interetsing that his name has come up twice for me today in receipt of Joni-related memorabilia. Kakki, going back to play with my new toys some more ;-) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 28 Jul 2000 07:31:07 +0100 From: "Ross, Les" Subject: New (?) A song, perhaps, of hers that cannot be heard without recalling to mind the events that took place when the song was first heard. Bring 'em to the table, everyone!
