It is nice to have both versions, one for when you are feeling somewhat laid back (gold), and one for when you are a bit more energetic (HDCD). I am amazed at how i never tire of her...ever. I can and do listen to her over and over. (obsessed? me? never!) I am also moved by her lyrics, her music and her ability to paint. Eric, Nice to hear ya. I so agree that "few" rival her songwriting. I'd even go so far as to say - IMHO - that NONE rival her songwriting capabilities. Since no other artist does what she does with poetry & music - not the way she does it, not those melodies she makes with those emotions she writes. She has no running mate! No genre even. Bob Dylan is GREAT but other people make that kind of music. Joni? All alone. Some other artists who are the single representatives of their style would be Steely Dan, Jane Siberry, Laurie Anderson. If you can picture the house where Maurice lived, at the foot of the stairs, there was an antler chair, made from antlers. One of my roommates, Tim, made that chair. Most of the time he makes these three or four tier chandeliers that he sends all over the country. The biggest he ever made is at a lodge in Brass Mountain, Georgia that measures something like seven feet by nine feet. Most of the antlers he uses are wintershed(fall off naturally) and come from Ireland and Scotland. He also makes small sconces, lamps, and candle holders you would put on a table. Very beautiful work. Anyway, this chair was recently auctioned off on Ebay for a lot of money. (NJC) Joseph, If you're being stalked, report it right away to the Dean. Go to the police, if necessary. And make it known that you have started "legal action." Let everyone around you know the situation. Announce it at your classes -- make it public, public, public. You need to make it stop as soon as possible. If the person is pranking, he or she will stop when it is obvious that you won't stand for it. If the person is seriously stalking you, knowing that you aren't going to sit idly by and take it will make him or her reconsider quickly. Predators of any kind are motivated by the fact that they have some kind of internal power over you -- that you are worried, scared or worse. It fulfills their need to have power. As soon as you assume the power and let them know that you are taking action, they will stop. Trying to ignore it will only internalize it -- don't accept damage to your subconscious by dealing with those thoughts. Treat the situation as you would a car repair -- it's an annoyance, possibly a dangerous one, and you must take action to fix it as soon as possible. One time, I was in a very dangerous situation with constant written and telephoned death threats from a psycho. The threats were so sick and so explicit, I couldn't sleep for weeks. As a performer, my regular shows are predictable and many of my whereabouts are publicized. I lived in scared-to-death mode for too long. Finally, I decided to expose the nut. I reported it to the police. I reported it to the managers where I worked, and I broadcast publicly to the audience between songs -- I would talk about it openly, then segued into an appropriate song, such as Three Dog Night's "Easy to Be Hard" or my own "Victim." If I saw him hanging out in an audience, instead of sweating through a set, I stopped my show and went straight to the bouncer or security guard. Naturally, he disappeared every time. It turns out the man worked for another division of the office where I worked -- he had served federal time on a long list of felony charges, and he was working at the company on a gracious rehabilitation program. He couldn't afford any bad scene. But, knowing that he committed some pretty heinous felonies, including armed bank robbery and kidnapping, he was even more of a serious danger than I had ever imagined. As soon as he found out I would take the action I needed to stop him, he disappeared completely. He was later dismissed from the company for doing the same thing to another employee. I ridded him, but the fear lingers -- even thinking of that situation gives me chills. Don't let it continue -- take care of yourself immediately. The less fear, anxiety or even mordid curiosity you experience, the better. Good luck, Harper Lou ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Jul 2000 06:47:58 -0700 From: Louis Lynch Subject: Getting Stoned, and Joni as a Prophet Hi all, I've been reading the "getting stoned" threads with a lot of interest. I thought I'd reply... My first musical experience was the album "Nights in White Satin" by Moody Blues. It was on 8-track, and I played it over and over and over again. I was at a friend's house, and I remember refusing to leave with them -- I just stayed there motionless on his water bed while they went out to party for the night. I haven't been the same since, you know. I've always been very liberal about pot -- in my opinion, it is a much safer drug than alcohol, and I don't subscribe to the theory that it's a "gateway" drug leading to addiction. In order to find it, many young people need to contact dealers who make other, more dangerous drugs readily available. To me, the drug laws are more harmful to people than the drugs themselves. About the addictions, some drugs are worse than others. I just had a weird experience with a young man -- some of you may have met us at Joni's MSG show. He's a good drummer and a lad with a lot of potential, but he's always been seriously depressed and seemingly in need of a friend. So, I took him under my wing, helped him out financially, hooked him up musically, and put him up in my house. Turns out, he's a major partier, totally escaped from reality. He ended up screwing me over, ripping me off, playing games with my head, and running out without even a look back. You know, he's not the first person I've met like that, or who seriously hurt me. Some listers defended drugs and tried to rank the addictions. Really, though, addictions are anything that make you want to escape the reality of life -- the longings to fill the empty voids in your psychology. Anything, from food to sex to pot to religion to drink, can become an addiction if you use it as a substitute for healthy expression. When used properly, the substances can be healthy, of course, but it seems that in modern times, too many people choose substances over substance. People today are so attuned to quick fixes and instant pleasure, they don't realize how addictive their personalities have become, and how desperately they strive to prolong those addictions at the cost of their own spirituality. The Hopis recognized how much our lives are out of balance and warned us of the consequences. After my little drummer boy tripped off to a new haze in someone else's rent-free room, I did some Internet research on why I was so hurt by the experience. It turns out he was quite slick, knowing just where to hit my weak spots to get what he wanted. There were some serious psychological dynamics at play there. The waters of an artist's soul can be so easily rippled, and he knew just where to throw the pebbles. Trying to sort it all out, I found an excellent web page compiled by a Canadian writer who really seems to have it together, in my opinion. Originally, it was designed to provide information about food addictions, and it's very big on fasting. But some of the writer's insights in other areas are phenomenal -- why we continue to eat, drink, smoke, and do things to excess, knowing they are intrinsically bad for us, but compulsively unable to stop. Unlike AA and the other pseudo-religions of recovery, he simply puts it into a psychological perspective. It helped me a lot, especially when I could see myself in my little friend's serious drug problem and understand the parallels. The website is Christian in nature, but I didn't find it too preachy or condemning. To me, it combines the Hopi teachings of "life out of balance" and Christ's teaching perfectly. It may not be for everyone, but I really want to share it with as many people as I can, especially you wonderful folks on the JMDL. Go to http://www.godsbanquet.com The New Millenium section is astounding. To me, Joni has been a prophet of this same "out of balance" message for decades. She's been putting the message in song and gently pouring it in our ears. This guy packs the message in a hammer and hits you over the head with it. Get it! You won't be dissappointed! When contemplating the worth of old vinyl, the answer I know is in the heart, not the marketplace. Given that, the Salvation Army says that Neil Young's "After the Goldrush", vinyl, pretty good condition, is worth $.99, 3 for $1.99. I bought it back. It was painful seeing my old albums there, ones that I once loved, sitting in the basement with all the other unwanteds and castaways. For a while I wanted to buy them all back. I hope as Bob said that someone buys them that will appreciate and enjoy them. My advice: if you have vinyl, and you have room to keep it--keep it. If you do decide to give them away, DON"T go back to look at them.
