It wasn't until I got help that I was able to get it out of my life. In my own case, I stopped, almost unconciously because I knew I would not recover from what i needed to recover from if I continued to refuse to feel pain. I got the point of not being able to live with it nor without it. Then no matter whether I smoked or not, I felt terrible. I stopped lighting it up and got on and dealt with the stuff I needed to. I smoked grass once when I was 15 (10 years ago) and it was AWFUL! Not to mention the fact I had the munchies and went though two packages of Oreo's. I couldn't believe people actually felt good smoking the shit. So I am an anti-drug crusader for that very reason. Also, Patrick and I lived in a basement of a house last year and 3 of the people upstairs were heavy into drugs. Pot, heroine and coke. They would act stupid when they were high, begging for money or food with sugar (which I wouldn't give them either) And they weren't above coming into our room while we were out and stealing some of my cds and 45's to sell for drug money as well. (For the record, we moved out of there shortly thereafter.) As far as drinking, that is something I toyed around with when I was 14-15. And we're not talking sissy drinks either. Jim Beam, Southern Comfort, whatever was in the liquor cabinet. (My mother was a heavy drinker at the time.) There was times when I would raid into the liquor cabinet before delivering my paper route. I have no clue how I was able to deliver the papers to the correct location, but did it for a few months. It wasn't until I read the Rolling Stone interview with Bonnie Raitt in 1990 when she was on the cover, when I realised I myself have the same problem, and hearing her talk about how she got drug and alchohol free got to me. That is when I realised that I wasn't going to be beholden to booze anymore. I haven't touched booze in 10 years, and don't plan on it either. There are more than enough drunk queens in the world, and I'm not one of them:) My only vice left from those days was smoking. I was smoking off and on for 9 years until last fall when I kicked smoking, chocolate and caffeine all on the same day. Which isn't to say I don't crave a smoke, I do. I just know that Patrick doesn't like smoking, and frankly, I can't afford the prices anymore. So I take it a day at a time and am thankful that I didn't break down and have a smoke. So this is my 2cent story about my wild young days. If you've been to a pro baseball, football or basketball game in the past decade, I don't know how you could have missed it. The main theme from "Rock and Roll Part Two" is played at many if not most American pro baseball, football and basketball stadiums, and the fans quickly learned the right place to shout "Hey!" In fact, the use of this song was begun in the late 1970s by Nancy Faust, the stadium organist at Chicago's Comiskey Park. Rael, the original first Townshend mini opera along with A Quick One While Hes Away off the 2nd album. Ending with literally the heaviest acoustic song of all time I Can See For Miles. Has been on my all time all time album top 5 since the first time I ever heard it. Put this album in your bong and smoke it. 2) Ogden Nut Gone Flake- The Small faces; The albums COVER is worth the price of admission. Its round but folds out to a five section collage. If you can find this album its a testament to the best of the first british wave of incredible rock. Steve Marriott, Ronnie Lane and all the others all under 5'4" but with a monster sound. Side two is a mythical legend including a new version of olde english you will have aproblem just trying to understand which introduces each song. If being stoned was to feak out this one will do the trick. An amazing album. The band at its best before Rod Stewart ruined it. 3) Ummagumma- early Pink Floyd. Grandchester Meadows. Careful with that Axe Eugene. Pink floyd played one night in SF at a show that went unannounced until the after noon of the show. I heard about it only because I happened to be listening to KSAN and Tom Donahues late afternoon show. Talked a friend iinto borrowing his car and when we got to the Fillmore there was a grand total of 150 people there. laid out on a beach blanket 10 feet from stage center with the next person 15 feet away. The band was trying out this new sound system which had monstrous mountains of amplifiers in each corner of the Fillmore West which was about the size of a basketball court. The first quadrophonic concert I ever heard and the sound effects alone were off the charts. A plane landing, a train passing through, a stampede of buffalo, all preceeded Grandchester Meadows in which you would absolutely swear that a giant mosquito was loose in the building. 2-3 hour show. Roger Watters, David Gilmour did unreal acoustic stuff. I said I must have this album. the album is just like the live concert was. Id have to throw Dark Side of the Moon in there as well. 4) Live at Leeds- The Who. - If you prefer great live music as an album rather than studio stuff this is my all time fave. People have to think about the fact that this band had ONE guitar, ONE bass, and ONE drum set. 5) Jimi Hendrix- Are You Experienced. What can you say. Bruce >> Not to pick on Bruce because his post is one of many that I could refer to in making this comment, but it seems to me that there are quite a few people on this list who are very quick to dismiss the artistic work of people like Gary Glitter or Jackson Browne because of some flawed characteristic or alleged crime. As if Glitter's music cannot be any good anymore because he turned out to be a pedophile. Or none of J. Browne's music would be worthwhile if he really did beat up Daryl Hannah. I suppose these people also refuse to read books by Lewis Carroll or study the psychological theories of Sigmund Freud because they were drug addicts. Maybe they dislike the paintings of Vincent Van Gogh because he was insane. As an analogy, I support the decision to keep Pete Rose out of the Hall of Fame even though he was one of the greatest players of all time, but I also think that while his gambling tarnishes his reputation as a person, it does not take away any one of his 4,286 hits during his career. And Shoeless Joe Jackson SHOULD be in the Hall of Fame now because what he was given was a LIFETIME ban from baseball, not one that stretches into eternity. Oh, and O.J. Simpson STILL was one of the greatest running backs of all-time, even if he did commit murder, too. Anyway, I digress, but the point remains. One thing doesn't really have anything to do with the other. Would the beauty and soul of Joni's music be diminished in your mind if you learned she committed some horrible crime years after she wrote those songs? Or what if you discovered she was just a low-class slut the whole time (like some people would describe Wilt Chamberlain)? Fortunately, she hasn't and probably isn't, but I wonder what prompts people to be so judgmental and diminish the valuable accomplishments of artists and others who turn out to be fallible human beings? I am not doubting you, just surprised, very much so. Nancy Faust (the best organist in baseball) is a family friend and we graduated from the same very small college. Nancy started the use of Steam's "Kiss Him Goodbye" (also known as na na na na, na, na, na, na, hey, hey, hey, goodbye) in 1977, for the White Sox team known as the South Side Hit Men for the abundance of home runs hit that year. That has become the White Sox standard fans' song. I do not recall "Rock and Roll Part 2" played at Comiskey until 1993, which was played when we clinched the tie for the division championship (I was dancing to the song in the aisles, so I remember that very well.) It is certainly possible that RRP2 was played at Comiskey prior to 1993, but I really don't remember it going back to the 70s. I know you are never wrong, Paul, but it it possible that you got the two songs confused... or if not, please enlighten me, since you know I care about all things White Sox. (Can anyone relate?) > Kakki wrote: > Yes, Yes! Also, whenever I see old friends from college, one of the >first things they ask is "are you still into Joni Mitchell?" For a long time I felt conflicted about my Joni-adulation and was a little embarrassed when friends would ask if I still listened to her -- as if it implied total life stagnation and lack of any growth. I was even more troubled when I would read various articles with Joni where she would say things like "It's OK to admire someone but people with obsessions need to get their own shit together"… or they need to get a life! Even with her music I was conflicted. I would read in various articles chronicling her early years things like "When she was learning guitar she bought a Pete Seeger instruction record but quickly scrapped it; she was determined to develop her own style of playing or not play at all." And all I wanted was to play *exactly* like her! And feeling that she could never respect someone who only wanted to copy someone else. I have long since gotten over these issues, however. I consider her such a hugely important artist that she is quite worthy of my unflagging devotion. And there is nothing wrong with copying her style. I have read so many articles with people like Michael Hedges saying that they began their style by studying her music. Her music should be much more widely accessible and documented, especially for those learning guitar. Just like when new piano students study the scales and exercises of Mozart (…okay, I am sounding a little ridiculous here!) But in retrospect, my desire to play like Joni was only a starting point (and what a place to start). Anyway, when old friends now say "Do you still listen to Joni Mitchell?" I proudly and confidently say "Yup. Sure do. Hi to all you beautiful people, God I hope I am doing this right. I am not sure where the #2 originated but if we are talking singer/songwriters my #2 would have to be Paul Simon. ( "...the poor boy changes clothes and puts on aftershave , to compensate for his ordinary shoes..." ) As someone new to the list I should probably explain how Joni came to me and how she has influenced and enriched my life. I was aware of Big Yellow Taxi, and is it at all possible that I saw her do this on Sat Night Live? A friend of mine purchased LODC and CAS from a thrift store and we just poured over that. It was interesting that the two works were so different, I would have thought that her material was always going to be in the LODC category . ( a difference that I have come to LOVE and at times get frustrated with) The order of my exposure is very mixed and there is a whole section of her work which I have yet to venture into. It was about '88 when my friend and I were pouring through LODC and CAS and I heard she had a new CD so I purchased Chalk Mark In A Rainstorm and was completely blown away!!! My Secret Place remains one of my all time fave songs of all times. What a rich sound, what is this music. It certainly offered me something at a time when the whole 80's stuff was winding down. ( I should say that My collection ranges from Pre-Mozart/Mozart opera to Broadway, 30's-50's singers, Classic Rock, Funk, Adult Cont, World...and LOTS of in between stuff!!!) Anyway as I was getting bored in the late 80's Joni came long and offered me an alternative to the alternative!!! I went backwards from there and bought DED (was disappointed) so I thought i'd go WAY back and got the first JM (Song to A Seagull) and had a VERY strange experience. I Had A King was as familiar to me as the national anthem yet I to this day have NO IDEA how I could possibly have known this song. This album remains in my top 3. I could really go on here but wont let me just say that this is "Storytelling " at it's best. I love the almost "theatrical" The Pirates of Penance" and Cactus Tree always gets me. I then purchased albums in order and had a weird experience. I Loved every "other" one. Didn't care for Clouds, worshipped LODC and Blue (especially in River where she says "They're cutting down trees, They're puttin' up reindeer" Didn't care for FTR, LOVED CAS didn't care for HOSL, liked Hejira. It was then time for another new release NRH which was spectacular and even better for me than CMIAR. I must admit that middle Joni intimidates me as I am not a jazz purist. I haven't yet ventured into DJRD Mingus, WTRF. I tend to LOVE early Joni through CAS and then jump to CNIAR. Turbulent Indigo was great but TTT didn't do it for me. LOVED the new BSN. I was just at the disillusion point in a relationship and then broke up and this release was my THERAPY and best friend for many weeks. Better now!!! Any GM JM fans in the Pittsburgh area , i'm back in circulation!! (Just kidding this isn't a personal ad!!!) The releases I have not enjoyed and the ones I have yet to venture into I see as acquiring a taste for and over time wlll probably come to enjoy as my continuing saga of music appreciation....what am I saying MUSIC IS MY LIFE....continues. I read about the first JONIFEST and am SOOOO dissapointed as I live near Pittsburgh. Anyone know if the Pittsburgh Contingent ever re-convenes? Anyone from Pittsburgh e-mail me please!!! I live about 30 miles east of there. Please forgive me for not knowing all the ettiquette....it will come over time. Love and Peace to you all!!! Of course we also have the infamous Black Sox of 1919 and the Team White Flag trade of 1997... I am not too worried that something will emerge when the tao is right and the karma is full. The media have been trying to market various names but none have caught on since they are all manufactured. But then. "Winning Ugly" didn't get created until the midst of the 1983 season, after Texas manager Doug Rader said that is how the Sox won... The home made sign phrase (in signs made by fans) that I most often see at Comiskey is "Field of Dreams." Hardly original but actually rather works for me. A picture of Joni looking all young and her combo vulnerable but wary look... and if she was ever that young, maybe I was once too, huh? Great review, by the way, and it ends thusly: "In another side of the times, she was defeated the following year in two major Grammy categories by Olivia Newton-John." time out to wince over that... "That's why the criterion of 'standing the test of time' was invented - a standard that C&S will always meet." Then come the recommendations for further listening: Blue, FTR, and HOSL. Check it out Yes Fans. http://sanford.bgroup.org/shazam/ Also a great site for Dave Matthews Band mp3's and new "shorten" files which are better quality than mp3.What is SHN? SHN is a file format. SHN is short for "shorten". SHN files are compressed ("shortened") WAV files. SHN uses a lossless compression method. What is good about the SHN format? The biggest benefit of SHN is that it uses lossless compression, which means no data is lost when it is compressed. MP3 files are also compressed WAV files, but they use a lossy compression method, which means some of the data in the original WAV file is lost. The 6-20-2000 recording of Dave's new concert tour with new songs from the album to be released this fall is fantastic. Happy downloading sluts!! Not to take away at all from the real strife and tragedies which occurred during that decade (don't think I need to recite them) I loved the 60s then and now and hold many wonderful memories of them and the times I had. My parents did NOT enjoy them and I know many younger than I (Gen X'ers) who tend to regard them with much disdain ("filthy, idealistic, drugged-out, stupid hippies and anarchists") but I saw the idealism as beautiful and feel that it was a true time of renaissance and overbursting creativity on every level.
