I recently read a >biography on David Geffen who, in his early machinations, >promoted Laura Nyro. I see Gary has answered your question as to many of the well-known songs she wrote. She was an amazing phenomenon, writing brilliant, original music that soared up the charts and was quickly covered by other artist while she was still a teenager - and yes, she did it before Joni became well-known on the music scene. I always appreciate that Joni recognizes Laura as a true original with out peer. I have not read the latest Geffen bio yet but this is the second or third time I've seen this reference that seems to imply that he is responsible for her early success. I have no idea if this is true and welcome the real scoop from more knowledgeable Laura scholars. The reason why I'm interested is that I heard that Tony Richland, a famous L.A. record promoter and manager, had much to do with her early success and exposure. A friend of mine who grew up in the same neighborhood as the Richland family told me this years ago. My friend is still best friends with his stepdaughters, and she used to tell me stories of all he did to promote Laura and how Laura used to stay overnight at the house on the couch all the time, etc. My friend is not some "showbiz" B.S.'er and I trust what she says. I just want to be clearer on what role Geffen played in Laura's early promotion and success and whether there is any mention of Richland in the new bio. Tony Richland, by the way, is the subject of Harry Nilsson's song "Mr. Richland's Favorite Song." One of the Nilsson websites states that this was John Lennon's favorite of Harry's songs. Does she have a greatest "hit" that could possible jog my memory? >> If you're looking for "hits," you'd find Laura Nyro's under other artisits, most notably Barbra Streisand, Three Dog Night, Blood, Steat and Tears and the Fifth Dimension. "Stoned Soul Picnic," Wedding Bell Blues" (which starts with "Bill, I Love You So, I Always Will"), "Eli's Coming," "And When I Die," "Sweet Blindness" and "Stoney End" were all hits for those above-listed artists.
