Let me set the scene first. We are in the midst of a wonderful heat wave here in Southern California. This is our only season here - hot! A pleasing breeze blowing through once in a while, just when you need it most. The plants thrive with my daily waterings and the dog spends most of her day panting under the fan placed mercifully over her bed. She's such a spoiled queen. I love the house being so hot that one sweats just typing an email (as I am doing now). At one point today, the thermostat in my backyard read 105 degrees! Living in an old house with no air-conditioning, let's just say I spent most of the day in the pool. Me, with several soda pops, and Pat Metheney playing all day. By the way, Kerry, he's my number two. Or is it Todd Rundgren? Or is it Retha? Anyway, who the heck knows who number two is around here. Yesterday, my boyfriend's cousin sent us live New England lobsters for his a-few-weeks-ago-birthday - way more than enough for six, so we invited a few close pals over for a SoCal version of a New England clambake. You learn to do these things where sand is absent (for those of us ten miles from the beach), but gas grills are plentiful. It was kind of gross, since I named all six of them upon their arrival (Lucy and Ricky, Courtney and Kurt, and Andy and Claudine), and then watch them disappear when they were placed in their cheesecloth tombs. I couldn't eat them later - but I digress. Sunburned, as my non-Joni pals ate my share in the warm Southern California night, I bored them with tale after tale of my recent trip to Saskatoon. Yes, all of them know Joni, but are of a tooth length that they only refer to C&S and maybe Blue in their recollections of JM. My enthusiasm for her finesse as a painter (after passing around the Mendel book) and tales of the wonderful folks I have met through the JMDL inspired one guest to ask that I play some JM. Mind you, we had just listened to two hours of Four Play (third favorite, Kerry) and were feeling kind of mellow. Now, y'all, I have to admit that I totally ignored the muted, but visible, groans of a few distasteful others. You also need to know that playing Joni in my house is totally taboo (and I am not talking cologne). Especially when my boyfriend or guests are in residence or even visiting for the evening. "She's so damn depressing," my Bradley says. So, upon gaining his clearance, I chose HOSL (what else?) to entertain my lobster-filled pals. Tom, the somewhat famous and hauntingly handsome LA thespian asks, " What's up with this jungle music? That's not Joni, is it?" Smiling, I replied (quite pretentiously - thanks to all of you HOSL interpreters) that one must listen to the album as a whole. This ain't top forty material we are dealing with. Everyone listened intently - as if we were at a concert. As luck and technology would have it - H came up next and, of course, Joni's Coyote started to scream through the round-the-house speakers. "So, that's where your nickname comes from?" my good pal who has always called me only that asks. "Yep", I say and excuse myself to put on something a bit more pleasing to the ears of the Joni ignorant and to those it haunts. Overwhelmingly, they asked me to leave the CD player alone. And I did, although for very personal reasons, it's my least favorite JM creation. Being alone among the haunted. But, life is truly a wondrous experience on nights like this. Fittingly, the lady from a couple of canyons over was here in spirit - haunting me and seemingly thrilling my friends. No regrets, Coyote (Rick) Casa Alegre Hollywood, California I'll be dancin' on a pony keg. ------------------------------ Date: 20 Jul 00 09:56:36 MET DST From: Lori Reason Subject: Re: Number Two Miles Davis Lori ____________________________________________________________________ Get your own FREE, personal Netscape WebMail account today at http://webmail.netscape.com. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 20 Jul 2000 00:59:19 -0700 From: Robert Holliston Subject: Re: Which live album is better:MOI or S&L? Excellent topic; My essential allegiance is more to albums than to artists... But framing the question as: What's #2 next to Joni's Hissing, I'd say Kate's "The Dreaming." A difficult, intense, ambitious, brilliant, and sorely under-appreciated effort. (I believe it's now out of print, which demonstrates that there is no justice in this world.) It's not the "total work" that HOSL is, but it revolves around a simple, sorrowful, potent theme: the ways in which we are separate (cut off) from each other... In fact, I may rank this over Hissing, because, in the end, I prefer the sheer intensity of Kate's singing to Joni's cooler approach. Also, hooray to those who bring up lovely Laura Nyro here. She was the first female singer-songwriter to break the mold, and start singing her own songs in her own manner. Right? "A wizard, a true star." Now back into the heavens...(I was pleased to find "our Joni" acknowledging her above all others in an interview, the only lady she allowed as being up there with herself...) Oops - I read that as painter-type artist, when I guess you meant musician-type artist. All I know is that Joni is my favourite, hands down. I don't have a specific second-place runner-up - this probably depends on what kind of a mood I'm in. Some others I have considered, and yes they are all women, Ricki Lee Jones, Phoebe Snow, Joan Armatrading and of course Patti Smith. First I would like to address why they are all women. Because I am a man-hating feminist dyke! There that's me making a stereo-type out of me! For those of you with no sense of humor that was a joke to satiate all of the angry editorializing I was tempted to do during the past week concerning a few popular threads. Get back to the issue GUZ! Okay, back from wandering. I rule out Linda , because I do not think she is a total artist (musician, writer). I love Laura but if I loved her almost as much as Joni I would listen and have more of her material, but I do love her. I think Kate is a super artist, but again not inspired to own anything by her. Shawn could be a top 5, but if I really love you I know more than half your lyrics, can't say I do. Wow, Joni you sure have made it hard for others to measure up! Joan Armatrading what a beautiful soul and how nice that she shares it with us. What great voice changes and ranges! Patti Smith is probably my most rock version of a number 1, unless Janis was still around and followed by Anne Lennox and Chrissie Hynde. I guess you see the 2 finalists, I own much of their material, I have seen them in concert many times, although none more than Phoebe (includes Joni). I know more than 50 % of their lyrics - I think. Remember - short term memory very shaky & smoky! Every time I get ready to give the crown to one I jump to the other, but it all comes down to who can I, being a little bit of a singer, sing with or sing their material most complimentary to my voice. And ... I guess... that would make .. (hands shaking, drums rolling) Phoebe my number 2. I also think she has gotten the shaft from the music industry - big time. Okay it's a minute later and now I want to say Ricki, but it's just too late and still that close. Seriously the reason I choose women is because I have chosen artists I can sing along with since I was a little girl. Although I am a HUGE Beatle fan and many male artists (CSNY, JT, Van the Man, etc.). I started out singing with my mom to Patsy Cline. She disowned me when I switched over to Joni ten years later! My mother hates ... I can't even say it, you know. I guess you could say Joni taught me how to sing. Time for me to put time into that again, before I lose it. But I have begun singing back-up again for my friend and local (Chicago) singer Vanessa Davis and that's fun! Bye for now ... As Mark mentioned, Bob has some good copies of Dr. Junk and I think he also has found a rare cover of the song for an upcoming "Covers" volume. Thanks for the alert regarding the Mingus bio - no one has mentioned that here before. It sounds like a good book. I looked it up at Barnes and Noble and found this info which I thought was interesting: Myself when I Am Real: The Life and Music of Charles Mingus Gene Santoro Charles Mingus was one of the most innovative jazz musicians of the 20th Century, and ranks with Ives and Ellington as one of America's greatest composers. By temperament, he was a high-strung and sensitive romantic, a towering figure whose tempestuous personal life found powerfully coherent expression in the ever-shifting textures of his music. Now, acclaimed music critic Gene Santoro strips away the myths shrouding "Jazz's Angry Man," revealing Mingus as more complex than even his lovers and close friends knew. A pioneering bassist and composer, Mingus redefined jazz's terrain. He penned over 300 works spanning gutbucket gospel, Colombian cumbias, orchestral tone poems, multimedia performance, and chamber jazz. By the time he was 35, his growing body of music won increasing attention as it unfolded into one pioneering musical venture after another, from classical-meets-jazz extended pieces to spoken-word and dramatic performances and television and movie soundtracks. Though critics and musicians debated his musical merits and his personality, by the late 1950s he was widely recognized as a major jazz star, a bellwether whose combined grasp of tradition and feel for change poured his inventive creativity into new musical outlets. But Mingus got headlines less for his art than for his volatile and often provocative behavior, which drew fans who wanted to watch his temper suddenly flare onstage. impromptu outbursts and speeches formed an integral part of his long-running jazz workshop, modeled partly on dramatic models like Orson Welles' mercury theatre. keeping up with the organized chaos of Mingus's art demanded gymnastic improvisational skills and openness from his musicians-which is why some of them called it "the Sweatshop." He hired and fired musicians on the bandstand, attacked a few musicians physically and many more verbally, twice threw Lionel Hampton's drummer off the stage, and routinely harangued chattering audiences, once chasing a table of inattentive patrons out of the FIVE SPOT with a meat cleaver. But the musical and mental challenges this volcanic man set his bands also nurtured deep loyalties. Key sidemen stayed with him for years and even decades. In this biography, Santoro probes the sore spots in Mingus's easily wounded nature that helped make him so explosive: his bullying father, his interracial background, his vulnerability to women and distrust of men, his views of political and social issues, his overwhelming need for love and acceptance. Of black, white, and Asian descent, Mingus made race a central issue in his life as well as a crucial aspect of his music, becoming an outspoken (and often misunderstood) critic of racial injustice. Santoro gives us a vivid portrait of Mingus's development, from the racially mixed Watts where he mingled with artists and writers as well as mobsters, union toughs, and pimps to the artistic ferment of postwar Greenwich Village, where he absorbed and extended the radical improvisation flowing through the work of Allen Ginsberg, Jackson Pollock, and Charlie Parker. Indeed, unlike Most jazz biographers, Santoro examines Mingus's extra-musical influences--from Orson Welles to Langston Hughes, Farwell Taylor, and Timothy Leary--and illuminates his achievement in the broader cultural context it demands. Written in a lively, novelistic style, Myself When I Am Real draws on dozens of new interviews and previously untapped letters and archival materials to explore the intricate connections between this extraordinary man and the extraordinary music he made. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 20 Jul 2000 16:12:41 EDT From: Cindy09876@aol.com Subject: Re: Number 2 Artist NJC i've been thinking about this all afternoon - and i just can't limit myself to *one* #2 artist (does this sound like a potato chip commercial?). in no particular order, here are the runners-up: DAVID WILCOX- beautiful guitar work in delicious alternate tunings. rich, thought-provoking lyrics. and a lovely voice to boot. hie thee to the record store, all you acoustic guitar players who haven't discovered him yet. I know, because I searched for years and had found it was off the list and never issued in cd. But as this truly marvelous person mentioned, it had been issued finally as a cd and I of course got it from cdnow (with the Joni connection to help support our Joni world) and I am just loving it! Mystery person, I thank you! Of course, once at cdnow... I picked up Trinket "Set to Explode" which is standard alternative pop these days but I love that song "Boom" which is the perfect summer song... if I get the energy up, I may work out an aerobics routine to it... and I finally picked up "Yourself or Someone Like You" by Matchbox 20 (Twenty?) which I really like, what a great grouping of neat songs. Has anyone heard the new Matchbox Twenty (20?) album? The little bits I have heard, I can't make up my little mind on. Thanks again, mystery person! And in terms of "out" music (with the most popular example being the song "Lola"), the Kinks were always at that edge, playing up the whole "Do ya think they're gay??" angle. Ray Davies has said that this was often one of his goals in songwriting, creating that androgenous, campy aura. Incidently, in his autobiograhy, Dave Davies wrote that he'd had numerous homosexual exeriences. - --- PPeterson4@aol.com wrote: > In a message dated 7/20/00 10:43:17 AM Eastern > Daylight Time, > erinstoy77@yahoo.com writes: > > << I think my number two would have to be Ray > Davies. > The Kinks' material, esp. circa 1966-1972, is > amazing. > >> > > I love that album with the silver cover that > includes "Waterloo Sunset". > Great stuff. Up to that point, the prevalent references to anything gay in American culture were Johnny Carson's cruel jokes on "The Tonight Show." It must be so much better for kids today to have open and positive gay/lesbian people in the media, and to not feel as if they are alone in their gayness. And although I liked Johnny Carson in general, I have suspected that the reason we never see reruns of his show on TV today is that his material was so often blatantly homophobic and sexist. --Bob ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 20 Jul 2000 18:10:36 -0700 From: "Mark or Travis" Subject: Re: listening to joni when stoned > I never listened to Joni when I was stoned.Does anyone think her > music sounds better when your high? According to lyrics posted on the Web, it's: Well I'm not the world's most masculine man, but I know what I am and that I'm a man, so is Lola. Lo lo lo Lola. Lo lo lo Lola. The complete lyrics are below: Lola I met her in a club down in North Soho where you drink champagne and it tastes just like Coca Cola C-O-L-A Cola. She walked up to me and she asked me to dance. I asked her her name and in a dark brown voice she said, "Lola" L-O-L-A Lola, lo lo lo Lola Well, I'm not the world's most physical guy, but when she squeezed me tight she nearly broke my spine Oh my Lola, lo lo lo Lola, lo lo lo Lola Well, I'm not dumb but I can't understand why she walks like a woman and talks like a man Oh my Lola, lo lo lo Lola, lo lo lo Lola Well, we drank champagne and danced all night, under electric candlelight, she picked me up and sat me on her knee, She said, "Little boy won't you come home with me?" Well, I'm not the world's most passionate guy, but when I looked in her eyes, I almost fell for my Lola, Lo lo lo Lola, lo lo lo Lola I pushed her away. I walked to the door. I fell to the floor. I got down on my knees. I looked at her, and she at me. Well that's the way that I want it to stay. I always want it to be that way for my Lola. Lo lo lo Lola. Girls will be boys, and boys will be girls. It's a mixed up, muddled up, shook up world, except for Lola. Lo lo lo Lola. Lo lo lo Lola. Well I left how just a week before, and I never ever kissed a woman before, Lola smiled and took me by the hand, she said, "Little boy, gonna make you a man." Well I'm not the world's most masculine man, but I know what I am and that I'm a man, so is Lola. Lo lo lo Lola. She passed away much to my dismay back in 1997. She was a lovely woman and I had the pleasure of meeting her once. She did her own albums and had a very devoted following. She was very private, and didn't get "into" the whole star scene. Really worth listening to if you have the interest. Starting point: CD - "Eli & The 13th Confession."
