She was not a delegate and she was not performing in a meeting. Were she to make a speech or say anything at the concert, that would be considered very insulting... not at all like Judy Collins saying something at a Judy Collins concert, she would have been making a speech at an Episcopal Church concert... thus to make a speech or statement there in the concert would have been in bad taste, like insulting your host at a dinner party, and that would have made enemies, not friends, for the cause, so rather than insult her host, she chose not to attend, because she felt in good conscience she could not attend without saying something. Were she a delegate to the General Convention I am sure she would have made an impassioned speech on the floor of the convention. But she was not a delegate; she was an invited guest. She was a guest at a social event, not a business session. Let's face it, you have a social event and some politico starts making a speech... it doesn't go over well. Kind of like when Jane Fonda won the Oscar for Klute and she said, "There are a lot of things to say but this is not the time or place." That is what it was for Judy Collins. The clarinetist Pee Wee Russell (d. 1968), a jazz genius, was a painter of note in the last decade or so of his life. He turned out huge abstract canvases, some of which sold for high amounts. Many of them are now owned by the Institute of Jazz Studies at Rutgers University in Newark, NJ. Miles Davis also turned toward painting in his last years, and Wayne Shorter has been interested in painting since he was a child. I own a book called StarArt that I know is out of print, which has sections on 5 or 6 musicians, including Ms. Mitchell. Joni's section contains a lot of her early marker drawings, as well as paintings from the Mingus era. Also featured is Cat Stevens, Ron Wood (Rolling Stones)and one or two others (maybe Jim Keltner). This is a pretty cool book, and well worth picking if you ever stumble across a copy. Not in this book, but other musicians who dapple in art (but not very seriously) would include Bob Dylan, John Lennon, Harry Nilson. She was talking about being at some kind of music biz party somewhere & she was talking to Bobby D about painting. He asked her if she used white when she paints & she thought 'Aha! The boy has been taking lessons!' or something like that. Dylan then asked Ms. Siquomb what she would paint if she were going to paint the scene they were in at that moment. She said she would paint (among other things) the dancers on the dance floor and the mirror ball above them. Dylan pointed to a coffee mug & said 'I'd paint this cup.' The Grammy-winning artist--who takes on gays, women and teen pop artists such as Christina Aguilera on his No. 1 album The Marshall Mathers LP--says producing strong reactions in people is always his goal. "I see their point exactly but that's what is was supposed to do. It's not like I'm mad at it." Eminem says the songs on the new album have to be taken in context. Like "Criminal" which makes derogatory gay and transsexual references at the beginning. "At the end of the song...I'm telling you that I'm making this shit up and it's pissing you off and you're letting me get to you. So when you let me get to you, you let me win, so I'm winning." Still, he doesn't feel any obligation to be a role model for the younger members of his audience. "I just put my music out there and whatever people want to think of it they can think of it. But I think, for the most part, the kids get it. They understand it." ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 13 Jul 2000 16:35:06 -0400 From: "C.A. D.J. here. PPeterson's post about Furry Sings the Blues (FSTB) evokes a memory for me of a similar discovery. My partner Jim and I took a Southern tour in 1992 or so through Arkansas, North Carolina and Tennessee. Jim was born in Arkansas (Pangburn, outside of Searcy) and his 93 year old grandmother still lived on the farm where he'd spent his first five years. We flew into Nashville, rented a car, and traveled to various towns and cities over the next two weeks, spending a night or two in each place, including a visit to his grandmother. I brought along some cassette tapes including, of course, Hejira, since it deals so much with traveling. Being the "D.J." that I am, I often would set up a song to play based on who we were visiting or where we were going. As we crossed the bridge over the Mississippi into Memphis, I decided to push in Hejira and "Coyote"'s upbeat tune led us into the city. We parked shortly on the other side of the bridge and journeyed over to Mud River - a cement, scaled down version of the Mississippi River popular with tourists and kind of fascinating in its way. On the tram ride back to the mainland, we witnessed what ranks as one of the top two sunsets I have ever seen. I had never seen the color green in a sunset before, yet there it was! Meanwhile, back in the tram, I heard the automated overhead voice say, "...and while you're in Memphis, don't forget to visit world famous Beale Street, home of the Blues." Like PPeterson, I hadn't even made the connection with FSTB and the city we were in. My eyes sparkled and I told Jim we'd have to go check it out. The next morning we got directions there and as we turned onto the street, I popped FSTB into the cassette player. Joni sings "Handy's cast in bronze" and, right on cue, we come upon the statue, "...standing in a little park with his trumpet in his hand." I was so excited! I bounded out of the car, snapped a few pictures - the statue, the New Daisy - and squealed with joy. After seeing PPeterson's post it makes me wonder how many other people learned of Beale Street first through Joni and then, through serendipity or pilgrimage, made their way to that little park. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 13 Jul 2000 23:27:00 EDT From: Dflahm@aol.com Subject: long weekend (njc) We are going to Maine early Friday; back online Monday late evening. From my off the head recall (and I welcome clarification) James' father came from old Carolina money and went north to Harvard and became a prominent doctor. His wife was from old New England money and after they married and had children, they maintained fairly grand estates in both places. Hence the Carolina and Martha's Vineyard/Mass. connections. Carly, of course, has the Simon and Schuster background and I have read her memoirs of the dysfunction in her family. Although, those memoirs, I recall, were regarded by many readers and reviewers as very compassionate and showed the very tight closeness that endured among them all despite the dysfunction. When I was the young teenage girl and James had gone off with Carly rather than Joni, I developed a bit of prejudice against her. But for years since I have read nothing but wonderful things about Carly and I came to think very highly of her. She consistently has shown herself to be a very real, compassionate and loving individual.
