Hey Bob, Done with the TNT Tribute, I decided to continue my Joni video jourey with Video Tree 1. I was just watching a VH1-on-1 segment from 1991 where Joni calls Larry "a city boy from East LA" -- so the Russian "geneology" is probably the extent of it. And possibly from being surrounded by grandparents or parents he can speak some - or fluent - Russian - or just put on a great Russian accent... Paul wrote the following about Paprika Plains... << and nothing, nothing in music has ever compared to the change at the end when the piano, bass and drums explode into the final improvisation. >> Okay, now you've got me going again. When I last left off, it was the middle of summer, 1977, if memory serves me well (which it often doesn't!). I was last seen, following a large black bird down the highway, and headed for Chicago. Now skip ahead several months, to the heart of winter. I had found a job, but not before being unemployeed for about 3 months, so money was extremely tight - no room for luxuries of any kind. Anyway, it was the coldest day of the year - I want to say about 15 or 20 below (why do always remember the weather when it comes to momentous Joni effents?). I was sharing a townhouse at the time with a friend of about 5 years named Billy (another huge Joni fan, who unfortunately passed away several years ago to AIDS). At the time, Billy had a Keeshond (a rather furry type of dog), named Kilo. We always tied Kilo up outside in order to do his business, but this time, one of us left him outside before we went to work. The poor thing was outside in this subzero weather for over 8 hours. While the dog was okay, Billy was wild, blaming me for leaving him out (I'm not sure who actually did it - I might remember the weather, but details like that slip my mind!) So, we were screaming at each other, and call each other names, as only best friends can, when one of us decided to put on the radio. Out from the speakers comes this incredible sound that stopped us both in our tracks - no more yelling, no more name calling, just blank stares and a great deal of excitement. It lasted for less than a minute or two, but it was wonderful! What was this? It had a familiar feel to it, but it was totally new. Finally, the disc jockey (at good old WXRT in Chicago - back when they weren't too 'hip' to play Joni) came on to say that we had just listened to side 2 of the new Joni Mitchell album, and after a short intermission, they would be playing the remaining 2 sides! Oh my God - we were like two little kids with their first bike! We scrambled around searching for a blank tape so we could get the last two sides on tape. Thank God Kilo was okay, because the poor thing probably would have died from neglect - we were that caught up in the moment. As it turned out, we had turned the radio on just at the point that Paul was talking about - when those drums and piano and bass (and horn?) all kick in for that final rush to the finish line. We managed to record the second two sides, and spent the rest of the night rewinding and replaying them. It was a magical night, and one of intrigue, because we still missed all of side one, and most of side two. What other goodies were in store for us on those two sides? What could lead up to that incredible finish? As great as it was to have sides 3 and 4, and missing sides 1 and 2 were driving us crazy. If I remember correctly, the album hit the stores the next day, but as I stated, I was dead broke. I then remembered that this small record store near by would take old albums as trade-ins, so I poured through my record collection looking for sacrificial lambs, and after arming myself with 15 or 20 of them, I headed to the record store. If I recall, the album sold for 11.99, and the store manager would only give me $1 per trade in, so I had to surrender 14 of them (damn taxes!), but it was a great and noble sacrifice, and one I committed happily. Besides, most of the stuff I brought with me was junk! We rushed home, and played the album from start to finish. And while Paul talks about the finish to Paprika Plains, what about the Overture that opens side one. Play that one as loud as you can, and tell me you don't get goose bumps - that last resounding bass note, right before Cotton Avenue kicks in, is a killer! Ah, Jaco. Oh, Joni. Aw, shit... I've been rambling again. Now you know why I stay in lurk mode most of the time. Sorry if my long winded musings annoy anyone. I am a big fan of Cassandra Wilson, and though DCfD was well-done, it didn't capture me the way that the wierdness of her cover of Black Crow did. Oh well. I'm also wondering why Sweet Honey in the Rock performed Circle Game. I saw Toshi Regon a couple of weeks ago (her mother is in Sweet Honey), and she mentioned that her mom's group just did a children's album. Is Circle Game on that album? Maybe because I just bought Chalk Mark on CD, I thought Sweet Honey would have done a really terrific job on Number One or The Beat of Black Wings or The Tea Leaf Prophecy. The rhythms and background vocals on those songs would have been great to hear with the layered vocals that Sweet Honey used to sing with Circle Game. Joni tells a very different version of this story in the article "Joni Mitchell is a Nervy Broad" written by: Vic Garbarini, in the magazine Musician, January 1983, available in the jmdl.com article database (amen and hallelujiah for that article database!). Check it out, it's a wild one. Great story about the Black Crow! I think the closest I have to a "Mystical Joni" experience comes indirectly through Judy Collins. As a three year old, I was obsessed with Judy, apparently, listening to the album "JUDITH" with headphones on, reading the lyrics on the LP jacket, though barely able to read and hardly able to understand what was being sung (I thought "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress" had something to do with laundry detergent, and "Salt of the Earth" was about condiments.) Twenty years later, I picked up STAS while living in Ireland, and was astonished by the second track, a song I swore I knew, as if from a past life ... impossible, I thought, I just bought this album ... it instantly brought me back to my earliest memories of childhood ... I remembered suddenly my mother singing "Michael from Mountains" to me, her son, Michael ... it took an international call back to the US to have my mother explain: "that comes from that Judy album you were obsessed with ... you know you learned to read off of that LP jacket and TV Guide." So, Joni had brought "Michael from Mountains" back to me long after my parents had shelved the "JUDITH" album in the attic. (The same thing happened when I heard Leonard Cohen's "Suzanne" for the first time as a teenager. "Where have I heard this before? Why am I getting flashbacks of Bert, Ernie, and the Carter Administration?") Cool story. While I told David his recollection of Joni's wolf story was right on the mark based on an interview where I heard Joni tell the story, I don't doubt that your recollections of her taking a tape recorder out to the woods are true as well. Could have been a long project (there *were* 2 yrs between DJRD and Mingus, so she *had* the time to find the perfect wolf :-) Kidding! I know she was REAL busy with the whole project, wanted Mingus to like it, and gives credit to alot of musicians who jammed with her but never made the final cut, so she *was* doing ALOT more than looking for the right wolf - putting words to music, doing some of her own composing, jamming with half the jazz world. If I gave it some time I'd probably recall a mystical coincidence of my own. For now, the best I can come up with is playing Dreamland at 2 or 3am while living at home with my parents, and my mother or father knocking on my door to lower the music, and not being able to distinguish between their knocks and all the percussion :-) Best, -Kenny SCJoniGuy@aol.com wrote: > < all had on me, except to say that I pulled off to the side of road, and shook > for about 10 minutes. >> > > Thanks for the formal introduction, Jack, and the wonderful story! At 06:48 AM 10/7/99 Angela wrote about "Mingus:" >I must say I have never heard a song as eerie as the >Wolves song...Joni is amazing the way she paints a picture with her words >and playing..I had chills running down my spin as I listened to it and I've >never felt so uncomfortable (if that makes sense) listening to a song, that >howling was just scary... "Mingus" is one of my favorite Joni albums. I was a budding jazz musician at the time of its release and while I had been very attracted to Joni's music earlier I felt like she really "broke through" into the jazz world with this one and it offered just one more bit of synchronicity for me. Anyway, this is a LONG re-post, but a Joni-story/quote that I love. It's from an interview Joni gave to "Musician" in 1983 and takes a while but will eventually work back to "The Wolf That Lives in Lindsey," which remains at the top of my consciousness these days after listening to Marian's amazing presentation. Following is the text, taken from in the articles section. "There's a song called "The Wolf That Lives In Lindsey." It was a live duet between Don Alias and myself; it's a strange piece of music, in that it's an example of a song that has a structure that I had completely ignored. I dropped beats, I added beats, there's bars of 3/4 that are in there, and there's all kinds of abbreviated signatures. Don was thrown into a highly alert position as a drummer, to be able to follow this thing, which was not maintaining a groove, just bursts of rhythmic passages. It was very spontaneous. And, when the thing was over, we figured that magic had, in fact, occurred. As raw as it was, and as technically peculiar as it was, you couldn't beat it for spirit. And I turned to Henry and said, "You know what we need on this now? We need wolves and water gongs." And, that was on a Wednesday night. So he was going to make it a project over the weekend to look through the A&M library of sound effects, and we were going to get some wolves." "So, anyway, that weekend I had company coming from Texas, and I had company coming from Canada at the same time. And simultaneously I was supposed to be at the Bread & Roses Festival. When my guests arrived, coming already from long distances, I had to tell them, "We're moving now!" And we all went to this festival in San Francisco. Things kinda got screwed up and there were some vibes around the whole situation which I won't go into, that made me very introspective. And I noticed at dinner that night, that my introspection was also making the table introspective. So, I thought, "I don't want to be here in this mood with these people, I'm influencing their mood," and so I excused myself. I had told a friend of mine, Tim Hardin, that I was gonna meet him back at the hotel. So I get to the hotel desk, and I say to a very uptight desk clerk, you know, "Would you please give me Mr. Hardin's room?" And he replied, "Can't you see I'm busy?" He was really uptight. The lobby of the hotel was gigantic, and suddenly, across the hall there came a drunk, singing "Why Do Fools Fall In Love?," stumbling across the lobby, snapping his fingers, right? I had nothing but time on my hands, so I perked up, because suddenly there was externally something interesting (laughs), and I was drawn across the hall, and I linked up with him, and we came back across the hall, singing "Why Do Fools Fall In Love?" We ended up standing by the desk, with this uptight guy in the background, and the next thing I knew, we had drawn in two more singers who turned out to be the Persuasions. Well, when we stopped singing, everybody was in great spirits, we all laughed, you know, we patted each other on the back, and we shook hands. "So now," I say to the guy, "Would you give me Mr. Hardin's room," and somebody in the crowd yells, "Oh, Hardin's in the bar." So I go into the bar, there's a kind of loungey jazz band playing, and Hardin is pissed out of his mind, and he comes dancing towards me through this crowded room here, singing to the band, "Hello, Joni," and doing improvisational lyrics. So I start dancing towards him, singing "Hello, Timmy! So good to see you!" The bartender says, "What would you like?" And I sing to him, "One white wine," and the bartender raises his hand in the air, and sings back, "One white wine." And the next thing, the whole room was engaged in this spontaneous Broadway show. Anyway, the story hasn't come to an end yet. Now, we're all in very high spirits. We discover that there's a party on the third floor. We go up to this room, and all the way up the hallway—you know, Timmy and I are hamming it up, just being goofy. We get into the room, and suddenly, the same guy that was drunk in the lobby singing "Why Do Fools Fall In Love?" comes up to me and says, "I have a tape of some wolves." And I say to him, not even realizing how profound it is, "Oh, I'm looking for a tape of some wolves. I'll write down my address and you send it to me." He said, "No, I mean, I've got it on me." So I said, "Okay," and he produced this box of tapes, all homemade with labels on them, and we thumbed through it. It was all African animal sound effects. Well, the very last entry was wolves. So he loaned me his tape recorder, I put the tape on, and it was a cycle of a wolf—-it starts off with the lead wolf, and then you hear yipping of pups and female voices, you know? And then he goes, "Aaaooo-aaooh-abh." Like, the same yelp, but one note up higher in the scale. And then the yipping of the pups, and the females. And the thing was looped about four times. Well, the first time I did "The Wolf That Lives In Lindsey," I just hit the button right at the beginning, picked up the guitar, and uncannily, it was the perfect key. The way the loop was designed, if you started it at the top of the tape and went all the way to the end, it fit the structure perfectly. So anyway, the next night when I went to the concert, my friend Joel Bernstein hooked the tape up and for an encore, I came out and we did this song and we blasted the wolves, mixed them in with the song, and the audience when I was finished singing, some clapped, but most of them howled me back on for another encore. So you see, there's still ways to get spontaneity into a show." I try to imagine Joni feeling a bit apprehensive about all the turmoil that's going on around her and right in the middle of all this she discovers, out of nowhere, this tape of howling wolves that just happens to be in the right key and also just happens to sequence perfectly with her song. Isn't it interesting how the creative process works sometimes? :-) Scott ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 12 Jul 2000 11:45:08 -0600 From: John Downes Subject: Synchronicity/Inspiration from Joni Hi everyone, I am enjoying the synchronicity stories. The crow story even brought tears to my eyes! Made me think of my own to share, although this is more one of mystical inspiration. I am an accredited music therapist here in Canada. One of the client populations I work with are the mentally and physically challenged. That's just a bit of background information, now on to the story.... As a Christmas present for my three elder sisters I wanted to give them a copy of a video which documented a visit my parents made to England in 1979 before they died in the 1980's.. My cousin in England sent over the tape for me to copy, but when I saw the tape, I realized that it was a video which had been made from a film. The film had no sound, and it was somewhat creepy seeing my parents moving around silently on the television screen. So I decided that I would composed some music or a song to have playing in the background of the film/video. For weeks and weeks I thought about doing the composing work, but nothing really came to me. No words, no melody, nothing. Then one day I was doing a music therapy session with a young woman who is blind and mentally handicapped. By touch, I asked her to choose a recording to listen to, either a male singer, or a female (Joni Mitchell's Wild Things Run Fast). She chose the Joni CD by touching it and I started the stereo and shared the song "Chinese Cafe" with her. As the music played and Joni sang "nothing lasts for long", suddenly the lyrics I needed for my composition jumped into my head. I grabbed a pen, and as Joni continued to sing, I wrote down a page of lyrics. As I reached the end of my writing and Joni's song was finished, I had tears in my eyes, a lump in my throat, and a certain knowledge that I had just written a song from my heart which would be perfect for the video. I couldn't continue with the writing of the music since I had to pull myself together and complete my session with the young woman I was working with. But I thanked her for making that particular choice, since if she had made the male singer choice I am sure the above would not have taken place. Later in the week I sat down at the piano, and the music basically wrote itself. Does it sound anything like Chinese Cafe in musical style or lyrics? No, and that is the strange thing. Somehow Joni's song was the catalyst I needed to create something totally new. The song was overdubbed onto the video, and on Christmas morning when my sisters saw the tape, there were tears of joy all around. After fifteen years of absence for my mother, and eleven for my dad, we still miss them terribly. However, the video is a great remembrance, and the song a comfort. It is his album Mingu plays the Piano, and to me, it is the *best* one of his albums I've heard to date. Sometimes, after working out, and after I get out of the shower, I like to put that album on while I'm making my decaf coffee and getting dressed. I also like it cause he took a chance with doing just solo piano and him not playing the string bass, which was his usual instrument. A perfect album from start to beginning, and yours truly has it on vinyl and cd. I think that both approaches can be effective means of protest and of creating change. I think that Judy Collins did what she is comfortable with in terms of making a statement. I'm certain that it wasn't an easy decision for her. In looking at the social causes that she has championed over the years, I feel that Judy has a real sense of social justice and that her actions are based on what SHE FEELS is the best method [for her] in the given circumstance. I just don't think she should be criticized for protesting in the way that she chose to. If she had decided to sing and say nothing, then criticism or questions should be asked as to why she was acting in a way that is counter to the beliefs she espouses. She did protest--just not in the way that you wanted her to or in the way that you would have protested. She took a position and made a statement. To say that to walk away is easy isn't being fair to her. I don't feel that she separated herself from gay men and women. Or at least she didn't separate herself from this gay man. Perhaps she did from others. Stephen ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 12 Jul 2000 16:17:16 -0400 From: "Christine Nunn" Subject: RE: onlyJMDL Digest V2000 #291 Favorite Joni songs? I especially love those kinds of experiences when animals appear. I have a wonderful book called Animal Speak about the spiritual & mystical powers of animals. Its fun & enlightening to look up the significance of animals when they appear in your life. Crows & ravens are about magic. You asked if "anyone else out there has had a similar kind of mystical coincidence in their lives". I have had many, though not fquite so profound as yours. One I recall occured when I was playing a song of mine at a party for some friends that had a chant like part with the words "rain come down". This was in the middle of the dry season here in CA when it never rains. All of a sudden in the middle of my song it started raining. It was a little scary! When I told that story and a friend of mine, she said that she had recently been singing a song she wrote about the wind. This was in a coffee house that had a huge statue outside. In the middle of her song, a big gust of wind came up and knocked over the statue! This had never happened before. On a somewhat subtler note, I have been working on a song about Joni & last night got up in the middle of the night to write down some verses. One of the words was mystic (in describing her) but I was questioning myself as to the accuracy of this and wondering if maybe I wasn't talking more about me. Well then, it was quite amazing to me to just read your post about her interest in mysticism. Guess I got my answer....
