Previously, the masters reverted to the artist's ownership (from the record co.) after a certain number of years.(15?). The new rule would allow the record companies to retain ownership indefinitely. There was no debate or committee or anything, they just slipped it through, and it sent shock waves through the music industry. Henley, along with Sheryl Crow and others have been pressuring Washington to nullify the bill. He also wrote to Billboard to urge musicians to band together to form an organization that would stand up for musician's rights. Incredibly, none exists presently (the musician's union does not involve itself in such matters). That may have been the "warpath" Joni was referring to. For Joni's work, I think that "Court and Spark" , "The Hissing of > Summer Lawns", and "Blue" suffer the most from losing a pause to reflect, > since the second half of each begins with an uptempo track. There's no reason why an album shouldn't be remastered for CD with a 'pause to reflect' at the end of what was originally side A. Infact, on the Gold Disk remaster of Blue, there is a good long pause there, and it works very well. Generally, the pauses between tracks can be quite crucial, and when I'm mastering an album, I'll spend time on getting those pauses right, particularly when there is a marked change of pace or mood. Also, the pause will often 'sound better' if you count in tempo along with the outgoing track and keep counting after the end of it. Then put the new track on beat one of a bar. When I first heard the album Close To The Edge by Yes, I wondered why there was a fifteen second gap between And You And I, and Siberian Khatru. I soon realised that I needed that pause to hold onto the beauty of the first track, before the aggressive guitar chops that start the second pile in. atb, Martin. I was just musing to myself the other day while watching Ashara's lovely Video Tree that I received a couple of months ago, how I have changed musically from when I was 14. I was young and very 'pop' musically, not really into rock or anything that I couldn't dance to as I love to dance. I didn't know how to play the guitar (and still don't really, unless it's in an open tuning). And if I had gone to a gig where a favourite band was playing (I believe U2 were on after Joni at the Amnesty gig) and here was some woman singing about politics and taxes and the global situation, I wouldn't have been so polite. But after 12, 13 years of loving Joni's music and loving The 3 Great Stimulants and DED (after not liking it for a long time, so stone me) watching it the other day I realise that , while probably not have actually *thrown* a water bottle at a musician while they were playing, I would have been at least disrespectful in some less obtrusive way. If I had gone to that gig and not realised that it was the same woman that sang Rainy Night House (a song that I was completely mesmerised by at the time, not knowing anything else about the singer, I just knew it as a hauntingly beautiful song) I would have dissed her too. It was 2 years later when I found the singer to the song and a good 2 years after that when I would have got DED and not liked it on first listen. BTW, has anyone seen the video? Her version of Hejira at the gig is so powerful and sharp, it brings tears to my eyes, the way she attacks the words. Powerful stuff. - ----- Original Message ----- Subject: Re: Danger, Will Robinson! > Hi Everybody, > I read Helen's post about "Dog Eat Dog" and also agree. I > love "The Three Great Stimulants". I know this because I went and saw it at the Mendel and have it in the catalogue. Then again, I also recognize the city scape because I live in Edmonton. The place the picture is showing is on my regular dog walking route, near a place where the dogs often swim in the summer time. By the way, that isn't a lake. It is the North Saskatchewan River which flows through Edmonton on its way to Hudson's Bay. As for the identity of the man, who knows. Actually, I wish the profile wasn't in the picture at all. Finally, I think that the original picture on which this painting is based must have been taken when Joni played here for our summer folk fest. I saw her there and it was magic!
