The special packaging set Joni received had Bob's name on the back as the one compiling the on-going project. It would be quite easy for her to contact him to thank or make further requests, although she would probably do it by way of a friend since I hear she vows to never touch a computer keyboard. Bob and I talked about what of the project to get to her -- the whole project to date or just the volume two. Not knowing how I was going to be getting them to her, I took Bob's advice and just went with the set he suggested, to not bog Joni down with too much if they were going to handed to her directly at some point. And here's another thought about why they didn't get played at that Bess venue. The rumor about Jackson and Bonnie was published in that well-researched tabloid, the National Enquirer(or the Star, i mix them up). Anyway, the rumor started while Bonnie was on tour with Jackson, David Lindley, Bruce Hornsby and Shawn Colvin. Jackson has a stable relationship with a long time girlfirend; I have met and talked her at length. Bonnie's divorce was filed/announced, and this article, founded on information from unnamed "friends" made the news. From watching the tour shows, I would have thought, from Bonnie's delighted enthusiasm for Bruce H's talent, that he would have been the one slated for the "cause of the divorce". But, of course, Jackson's name maeks for a "better" story. Darice ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 08 Jul 2000 21:22:28 +0100 From: catman Subject: scarNJC I know of at least one person on this list who may relate to this: I finished writing this last October and recorded it in the same day. I had had a mastectomy and then reconstructive surgery, and the song is about the scar I now have on my chest. It's a very elegantly poised scar--it points right at my heart, and I think of it as a reminder to always look to my heart for all of my most important decisions. We're always led to believe that going through something as awful as cancer or any serious disease is something that shouldn't be talked about, but I can't begin to tell you what a silver lining this experience has had for me. My scar is beautiful--and I think that every scar is beautiful; people shouldn't hide them. In the song, the scar also serves as a metaphor for the emotional and internal scars that we accrue as we get older. A key line is "A really big man/ loves a really good scar"--after all you don't want a partner that's afraid of or put off by your scars. I wear mine like a badge of honour. In the end, the song is about learning to see a scar in a new way--how very tender and loveable it is. Some friends of mine were scared of talking about disease or illness, and in the song I sing about a man who stopped calling me when he found out about my mastectomy--that really happened, too. Various friends of mine didn't initially want to deal with it, but after a while most came around. The post likening James and Jackson Browne and the need for the police to intercede in both of their relationships to women is not of the caliber of the previous posts. I suppose that, the same thing could be said about Joni and any prospective housekeepersOr does threatening your piano justify physical assault? Actually, I do not think that either thr Daryl or the housekeeper episodes would have gotten any publicity except for the fame of the people involved. I, at least, continue to give Joni the benefit of the doubt; the poster likening James/Jackson does not. The show I saw in L.A. had Ricky Lawson on the drums and all through I kept thinking he was the second coming of Erskine! To me, they are both powerhouse drummers. I start to think they are almost too strong at times and then realize it's just that I'm not used to hearing such standout and awesome drumming. While Jon Herrinton was the definite anchor in L.A., Walter was really working it too - I could tell from my 8th row seat with high powered binoculars ;-) - but he is so comparatively low key and understated that I think it gives the illusion that he's a weaker presence than he actually is. I know she was touring with JB in summer '72 and in '73 but (being oversensitive when it comes to all things FTR ;-) she had written both Lesson in Survival and Woman of Heart and Mind much, and more in the James Taylor timeframe. The earliest copyright in the FTR songbook is 1972 for both songs, but she was performing the songs live in concert as early as February 1972. The actual album was not released until late fall of that year. Do you know when they were together? I never knew they had a relationship until I joined the list. Maybe there are some other songs inspired by JB in later albums. I know we both feel bad they are so on the outs with each other. He is phenomenally gifted, especially as a lyricist. Maybe there is too much fire and genius between them which made the relationship combustible. I couldnt stand to see so many of my favorite people losing their minds. This was no time to sit back while the horrible sounds of DED eats at their brains like some form of Ebola virus. There have in fact been other examples of this. An entire French village in the 1800s ate each other and the question arose as per whether this was because of moldy bread or not and I knew that DED hadnt been produced or released yet BUT the symptoms were so similar. In any event I contacted a friend who is among the foremost authorities on DEDITIS. He CAN cure you guys.He has already cured something like 2500 victims already (most of whom lived in Los Angeles). Its not biological, its a lifestyle choice, listening to this album. He said people can be conditioned to slowly come back to reality and that they will know they have been cured when they play the album and their cheeks pucker and they immediately replace the record with something worthwhile like Song to a Seagull. A few simple 50,000 volt charges from a taser in a special place while listening to a real album of good Joni music and bingo you are cured. He has agreed to cure the first 15 listers for FREE and give a substantial discount to the rest. His normal price for the one time treatment is $25,000. So please email me off list and I will pass along your mailing address to him. His name is Dr. Jackson James Taylor Brown DDB LLC. The best part is he travels alot and can arrange to cure you in your home. (colin knew!) all i know of carly are her hits, which have been few and far between over the past few years. but if this quote and this snippet of lyrics are typical of her output, i need to pay carly a visit. i have her "best of" cd and that is it. so colin, mark? which one should i get, besides this new one? What year was the Steve Klein custom made acoustic made for Joni? I was reading about it in the homepage, and I didn't see anything about a date that it was made. And the ultimate question is, though she has the VG8 unit, does she still have that acoustic at all? James who wishes he had that Steve Klein custom acoustic:) ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 08 Jul 2000 22:54:12 -0500 From: Michael Paz Subject: Welcome (NJC) Welcome Zach and Happy Birthday on Tuesday. Enjoy the list! As for Joni on Piano, I think she is overdue to return to the Piano, but she IS ever changing and I am enjoying her as a stand up singer in front of a big band. Also welcome to David who comes baring gifts. Hope everyone is having a wild weekend! For The Roses 2. Dog Eat Dog 3. Miles of Aisles 4. Song To a Seagull **See note below 5. Hejira and Ric added: >p.s. how about an even TOUGHER choice...our FIVE (only 5) favorite joni >songs!!! yikes... I think we should expand this to the top 10 Joni songs (it's impossible to limit to just 5!) Again in no particular order: 1. Tax Free 2. Down to You 3. The Pirate of Penance 4. Amelia 5. Edith and the Kingpin 6. A Strange Boy 7. Jericho 8. The Dry Cleaner From Des Moines 9. Slouching Towards Bethlehem 10. The Magdalene Laundries ** There has been a lot of talk recently about The Hissing of Summer Lawns as an entire composition, this is after all the way it was conceived and executed. It is my opinion, however, that STAS was the first of her "concept" works. Originally STAS, in it's L.P. form, was all about the city on one side and all about the seashore on the other (The way Terry Reid's "River" was all acoustic on one side and all electric on the other). I still find myself listening to my vast vinyl collection on occasion if only to take those few moments to flip the album over and sometimes flip my mindset at the same time in anticipation of the other side. While the quality of sound from a CD is far superior, I think a little is lost by the missing division of two sides in some works and some CDs are enhanced by the continuity of the music. STAS was my first Joni "album" and will therefore always have a place of honor in my music library.
