Thanks for the tip - an amazing songwriter. I'd already fallen in love with Bobby Caldwell's recording of "At Last" a few years back and think Joni has it nailed, too. The Flamingoes (shoo- bum shoo-bum) version of "I Only Have Eyes For You" is one of my absolute favorite recordings of all time. Mmmmm, mmmmm. Kakki NPIMH: a certain slow dance to "I Only Have Eyes" in a club in Haight Ashbury in the 80s, ahem ;-D ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 3 Jul 2000 21:50:03 -0700 From: "Kakki" Subject: Re: To Blame or Not To Blame? Everytime this thread comes up, is frustrating to me because there are just not enough facts to go on and so we guess and speculate and those who are fans of both artists probably feel uncomfortable about it all. I have always loved JB's music from the beginning but am not that familiar with him as a person. I was really taken aback when this tie in to him in the song was first mentioned here on the list. On the other hand, I am a woman and my reaction as to whether or not Joni should have written the highly coincidental lyrics in the song can't help but be influenced by that fact. *If* these allusions are to JB and are completely true, I don't think I'd find Joni actions cruel and nasty, but rather, brutally honest and angry and perhaps a very public way of telling him to get help. I find it interesting in the articles that so many of Hannah's family and friends told the press that JB had previously done this to her and that he has a history of dangerous mood swings. Why would they say this when she herself was keeping mum on the subject? It's not like they are trying to back up any allegations she made - she refused to make any. Why doesn't she admit or deny? Probably a lot of reasons. She may not have admitted it at the time because, under California law, he would be automatically charged with a felony and a felony conviction could severely affect the rest of his life. If convicted, he would also have to face some sort of jail or other confinement and mandatory treatment. Ironically, "toughening up" the law in California, has also had some adverse effect of women never reporting such assaults because many don't want their husband or partner to go to jail or have the stigma of a felony conviction for the rest of his life. None of us may ever know the whole story or Joni's reasons behind the song. We just don't have enough real hard information from both sides to really be the judge of either, IMO.
