Here is the extract from "Long Time Gone" (too much time on my hands - no child to raise ;o)?): Peter Fonda: She was brand-new, hadn't been heard by any of us. David came strolling in one day, having dropped by with Joni in the afternoon. Wonderful day. He said, "Fondle . . . " That was his nickname for me. He knew I liked to fondle the women, so he called me Fondle. At any rate, he says, "Fondle, I've got one for you." I thought he had some groupie or something, you know, so I said, "This is my house, David. My wife . . ." He says, "No no. Come on. Serious, man. Listen to this." And Joni, kind of shy, appears. Staring at the ground for something to do, she sees my twelve-string guitar leaning against the wall and asks, "Can I use that?" She grabs hold of my guitar and detunes the fucker and then plays thirteen or fourteen songs, warbling like the best thing I'd ever heard in my life. David's so proud and he says, "That song's about me and that song's about so-and-so and isn't this great?" Joni was fabulous. I was just bowled over by this fabulous person with a wonderful voice and a great style. Lovely. I voted it very high among all Joni albums (though each has its strengths in my opinion) but the Hejiras ultimately rose up in battle and defeated the Clouds and eventually just duked it out with the For The Roses Mob trampling the DEDs in the process. Well, the end of the trip to Saskatoon draws near. My flight leaves at 1:45PM - back to LA and reality. Today was a transitional day for me. The first day of the trip I had to really relax and spend some time wandering in the city. Naturally, including the Mendel Gallery. Most of the JMDL group have left for their homes and computers. I am eager to read their posts about the trip. Each of us had very unique experiences. Yesterday, I awoke today groggy from the previous night's festivities. A group of us partied till the wee hours at a local watering hole. Keeping Joni hours, I left the hotel after noontime for a nice, long, healing walk. I crossed the Broadway Bridge into the Broadway District. An area of significant young Joni adventures. I walked to what I believed was her old high school, sitting for a while talking to some students playing soccer. I took some pictures of them and the school asking if they heard of Joni Mitchell. The early teens told me of course they had heard of Joni Mitchell. I asked them if they knew this is where she went to high school. They laughed. They said this wasn't the school! Then pointed me in the right direction. (Note to those on the riverboat ride: the tourguide was wrong, so disregard all the photos we took!). Making my way to the real high school, I then spoke with some other students who confirmed this was the right place. More pictures. One student told me his grandmother used to baby-sit Joni when she was young. The lady is certainly revered here in Saskatoon. After a brief tour of the Broadway district, which contains the first venue in which Joni performed as a young girl, I made my way back over the Broadway bridge toward downtown. The Broadway bridge has steps down that lead to Kiwanis Park. It's a long riverfront park that runs from (roughly) the Bessborough Hotel to the Mendel Gallery. Along the way, my mind was focusing on how this area provided Joni the musician and poet with so much inspiration. Along the walk, the citizens have erected modest memorials to the veterans serving in Canada's foreign wars. The most elaborate is a lovely fountain erected to the Canadian veterans of WWII. Eventually making it to the Mendel, I was happy to again see the crowds light, meaning that a very personal look at the paintings could happen. A few minutes into my viewing, I ran into Penny which was delightful. Of all the JMDL folks, Penny and I had the least time together, so it was so cool to sit in front of the two Get Out Of The Kitchen paintings, with Joni's CDs shuffling on the sound system and gab like magpies on a wire. Magic. After a while, Rick from Vancouver showed up. It was his 8th visit to the gallery and was still shining. Rick has this uncanny ability to point out the very obscure details of the paintings and photographs. I learn something new each time I see a painting with Rick. What a nice man. Rick, Penny, and I spoke with the docent for a while, asking about a rumor we heard about Myrtle not allowing Joni to hang one of her paintings. It was the *French Kiss* painting, which Myrtle did not think was appropriate for the people of Saskatoon to see. At the last minute, a change was made and the less controversial (in Myrtle's mind) Red Mountain was substituted. So, Myrtle has final approval of the exhibit! There were a few other cute anecdotes. One of Joni's cats peed on Georgia O'Keefe's Rainbarrell painting, permanently staining the work. Joni included it anyway, stain and all, even commenting to the press on her cat's addition. Another painting, Middle Point contains some cat hair added when one of the cats brushed against the painting as it dried. A final bit of trivia. Joni herself picked the CDs to be played (shuffled) continuously throughout the exhibit. She chose Hits, TTT, TI, Hejira, and I'll let you all guess which was the fifth. Saskatoon visitors - don't give it away! Well, gentle readers, it's time for me to finish packing and be on my way. Over the weekend, I met the first violinist from the BSN tour. He traveled as well from Los Angeles to attend the exhibit opening. A very chatty, entertaining guy with a ton of little stories about being on the road. As it tuns out, Ralph is a neighbor of mine andwe share some mutual acquaintances. We are on the same travel itinerary today which includes a four hour layover in Calgary during which time I hope he shares more road stories. A perfect way to end a memorable trip. Many happy memories will linger for years. Ashara and I did the radio interview with the CBC this morning. If any of our Canadian listers heard a the interview, I hope we did you proud. No regrets, Coyote (Rick) Casa Alegre Hollywood, California I'll be dancin' on a pony keg. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 03 Jul 2000 08:47:38 PDT From: "Raffaele Malanga" Subject: Joni's interactive There are some good pages about Joni Mitchell on the Art and Culture web site at: http://www.artandculture.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/ACLive.woa/wa/artist?id=247 It's particularly nice the interactive diagram at the top of the page regarding influences with links to other artists. Apparently Joni's related artists are people like Paul Cezanne, Pablo Picasso, Patti Smith. I'm not sure what Led Zeppelin have in common with Joni and am puzzled by some of the keywords they associated to her: religious, dreamy, feminine... But no matter how clever and well informed the pages are, they still have Joni under Folk! On another note, responding to some listers who were wondering about the Diary of a Decade web site that Jamie Zubairi and I have put together on Joni's paintings in the 80s, the URL is http://www.malanga.co.uk/diary For the time being there is a link from the jonimitchell.com pages but eventually Jim will put the site under the official address. Yesterday, as I was making one last stop to the Mendel for a last look at the paintings, a woman came up to me and said, "Ashara?" "Yes?" "It's Karen O'Brien from the list." Wow!!! Unfortunately, even though Karen came all the way from London for this exhibit, she was very busy before she left and was not able to read about all the list plans to get together. I told her we were heading west, and were planning to stop in Maidstone along the way. She mentioned that she had gone there already, and that there was a small museum that had a few Joni things in it, and also mentioned a story that was told to her by one of the woman there about Joni when she was young. So, saying our goodbyes, we started on our westward journey. Found Maidstone without a problem. It is a VERY tiny town, population of about 1,000, and about half that number when Joni lived there. Found the museum, introduced ourselves, and when we said we just wanted to see the Joni stuff, she waived the $2 entrance fee, and said, "just go on ahead in." LOL!! Out came the video, and the film started rolling on the 4 or so pictures they had on the wall. The most precious thing was a book of old photographs that Joni's mom sent the museum of Joni, Sharon Bell, and some of her other friends and family. Got it all on tape, including the words on the back of each photograph where Myrtle had written a brief explanation of each picture. Then Lois called another woman who knew the Andersons when they lived there, and even sang in the church choir with Bill. Iris came right down, told us stories, and then shuttled us into her car, brought us to the church, Bill's grocery store, which is noe a video store, and then to Joni's old house where she waved to the train each day as it went by. Got it all on tape, along with a story or two, which I will let Karen post to the list when she gets back. Iris and Lois told us how Joni always said Sharon Bell was the one with the beautiful voice, not her, and promised to send me a tape that Sharon made a while back. I bought a few recipe books from the museum for the raffle for Jonifest, hugged those two incredibly generous woman, gave them a catalog from the Mendel for their museum, and continued on our way. Just finished the CBC radio interview with Rick Hobbs which was really fun. Hi Rick!! Thanks for bringing up a difficult topic. As to how to understand all this..."our dear Joni," as we idealize her, well most of us have moments, lapses, where our anger takes over... and we become cruel. Sometimes very cruel. The we become "men of cruelty" as she sings in "Shadows and Light." I don't think when she said "Men," she meant men only (i.e. those wife beaters) as opposed to women, but that she was speaking for our kind, our species, herself included. Just as we are also all (sometimes) "men of delight." Once the song is out, her choice then is to accept it, 'fess up, but apologize for it as a lapse?-- or wiggle out and shift the focus to that of marital brutality in general, setting aside JB in particular. And she took the second path, in that interview answer. (If she had admitted that is was about JB, then would she have been setting herself up for a libel suit?) But I'll wager that she now wishes she hadn't gone overboard on this song, for whatever reason. We all have these regrets for our past intemperate anger. Don't we? Bruce M. >now as most everyone knows, browne's first wife committed suicide, leaving him >with a young son to raise alone. a baby really. so consider what the >impact these lines must have on browne, hearing them sung by someone he was >once close to...thinking people hearing them now might believe them, or that >his son, the one whose mother this is about, might hear them sung: "his >mother had the frailty you despise, and the looks you love to drive to >suicide." wow. anyone who has EVER lost someone they loved to suicide, >knows that the guilt you feel as a survivor, justified or not, is enormous, >even overwhelming, and sometimes, >life changing. to have someone say that not only did you drive them to it, >but you enjoyed it, pretty much takes one's breath away. it is nothing short >of savage. does she have a mean streak a mile wide, this woman? even if >every word of it was true, to say it now, decades later, publically and >towards no end, makes me just shake my head in amazement...quite the same way >i would if jackson browne were to write a song, 30 years later, about some >hippie chick who cared more for her career than she did for the daughter she >left by the side of the road? > >the tone of this song is off. it doesn't seem like joni to me. and it sure >doesn't seem like jackson browne. > >interested in anyone else's thoughts. > >peace all, ric ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 3 Jul 2000 15:45:13 EDT From: IVPAUL42@aol.com Subject: Re: Joni's interactive In a message dated 07/03/2000 11:51:46 AM Eastern Daylight Time, r_malanga@hotmail.com writes: << I'm not sure what Led Zeppelin have in common with Joni >> Page and Plant were big fans of hers and wrote "Going to California" about her. And she took the second path, in that >interview answer. If true, wouldn't publically "admitting" it is about Jackson Browne be 1,000 times crueler to him? As the song now stands, he is not named and the character in the song could be about scores of abusive men out there. Why single Jackson out when the actions described in the songs are certainly not exclusive to him or any one abusive man? What would be the purpose? For her to "come clean" to make some of us feel better that she has "fessed up" to us and "admitted" she can be cruel and is not perfect? I don't need any "admissions" from her that she is not perfect. And she is still innocent until proven guilty, too. And Jackson certainly doesn't need it, such an admission, when it would only serve to take him down much further than the speculation already has. > (If she had admitted that is was about JB, then would she >have been setting herself up for a libel suit?) But I'll wager >that she now wishes she hadn't gone overboard on this song, >for whatever reason. We all have these regrets for our past > intemperate anger. Don't we? HYPOTHETICALLY, if she verbally "admits" it, it may be slander. If someone chooses to relate her admission in writing, it's still murky to me whether that may be libel. Plus, if it can be proved that what she is saying about Jackson is true, then it is may not slander or libel. If Jackson wants to sue her, he has to show that it is not true. I doubt either of them want to step into that can of worms. He may have more of an action for defamation, emotional distress, etc. if anything. I think she wanted to make a point about women who are abused. I think that motive superceded her concern about other factors. Why does Jackson get so enraged about it if it isn't true? If the only factual similarities are that his wife committed suicide and his son was a young boy at the time? It's almost like saying Joni shouldn't write about any controversial subject because she might offend one of her past or present friends who personally were involved in similar controversial subjects. Tina Turner will be giving her famous raspy voice and high-energy stage show a permanent rest when she retires at the end of her current tour. Turner, 60, announced her plans to a 75,000-strong crowd in Zurich as she kicked off the European leg of her ``24-7'' tour on Friday night, her London-based publicist Bernard Doherty told Reuters Saturday. ``I've done enough,'' Turner said. ``I've been performing for 44 years. I really should hang up my dancing shoes.'' Turner, a grandmother, said she couldn't possibly sing without ``jumping around'' and acknowledged her performances were getting harder and harder to do. ``I can't keep up with Janet Jackson. I'm not a diva like Diana Ross,'' she said. ``I'm rock and roll but I'm happy I can do it one more time so people can remember me at my best.'' Doherty told Reuters Friday that Turner wanted to make the announcement in Zurich, where she lives with her partner of 15 years, record boss Erwin Bach. He said the American singer would still perform live but only at special one-off concerts for charity or old friends. ``Tina said she wants 'simply a rest','' Doherty told Reuters Friday, echoing the title of her hit ``Simply the Best.'' ``She wants to go out on top, while she is at her best. She doesn't want to become a faded caricature of herself,'' he said. Turner was looking at film scripts but would play only strong, determined women, Doherty said. ``She says she has lived the role of a victim and playing one doesn't interest her,'' he said. ``She would have loved to be in 'Gladiator'.'' Turner will perform 23 concerts in Europe and 40 shows in the United States before calling it a day. Her last concert will be in San Francisco in November. Schneider, Tom Cunneff, Lorenze Benet, Vicki Sheff and Allison Lynn She has played mermaid, murder suspect and the secret love of a poetic fire chief. He has played soulful folk singer, rocking party boy, peaceful political activist. But never has the spotlight caught Daryl Hannah, 32, or her longtime boyfriend, Jackson Browne, 43, acting out the frightening roles that they reportedly assumed two weeks ago in their 5,000-square-foot Santa Monica home: he the angry lover, she a battered victim. As Hannah's spokesman, Alan Nierob, told the press on the afternoon of Wednesday, Sept. 23: "She received serious injuries incurred during a domestic dispute with Browne for which she sought medical treatment." "It's awful," says a close friend, given permission to speak to PEOPLE by the normally press-shy Hannah. According to the friend, Hannah suffered a black eye, a broken finger, swollen lips and body bruises at the hands of an out-of-control Browne. Says the source: "She's still in shock." So are many of Browne's friends. And they paint a very different picture of what went on when Hannah, in the process of ending the relationship, left her New York City apartment and returned to the $2.5 million house in Santa Monica, which she co-owns with Browne, to collect some of her belongings. The singer's manager, Donald Miller, insists the incident could never have occurred because he was with Browne at an LA recording studio at the time. Other Browne supporters say there was violence but claim that Jackson was simply defending himself against the 120-lb. Hannah. "I know Jackson like a brother," says his longtime pal singer J.D. Souther. "He is just not a violent guy. As far as I can tell, he was just trying to protect himself. He was getting chased around by her." Still others who know the couple say it's hard to be certain of anything about them. Hannah and Browne met about 10 years ago at a concert in Chicago, when the twice-married singer (whose first wife, Phyllis, committed suicide in 1976, and whose second marraige, to Lynne Sweendy, ended in divorce in 1983) pulled the young actress onstage. In the years that followed, their bicoastal relationship proved rocky, and friends say they have broken up dramatically and gotten back together several times. "This has happened before," says one friend, of the blowup, "but never this bad." If the sad cycle is at last broken, one person to credit, it seems, is John F. Kennedy Jr., a friend and sometime flame of Hannah's during her tumultuous romance with Browne. In the past few months, Hannah and the 31-year-old Manhattan assistant district attorney, who reportedly met Hannah at a wedding in 1988, have been seen together frequently in Manhattan. Shortly after hearing about Hannah's reported beating, a devoted Kennedy hopped aboard an airliner and brought her back to New York City. Days later, sources say, her hand was still wrapped in a bandage, and dark sunglasses hid all but a glimpse of her blackened eye. The ugly incident on Sept. 23 marked the end of what for Hannah had seemed a fruitful summer. The star of Splash and Roxanne had spent the last few months studying filmmaking at New York University--and rekindling her romance with JFK Jr. Last week, the tabloid TV show A Current Affair broadcast an amateur video- tape that showed the couple nuzzling affectionately on the front steps of a New York City brownstone. According to pals, Hannah's only motive for returning to Santa Monica was to pack a few last bags and, says one, "finalize the breakup" with Browne. It was then, they say, that she and Browne began to argue. Browne's manager's claim that the singer was elsewhere at the time is contradicted by the Santa Monica police. According to Sgt. Gary Gallinot, Browne was indeed at home and at 12:03 P.M. called the station complaining that "someone was ransacking his home." That someone, her friends say, was Hannah -- not ransacking, but hiding in the guest house in fear of Browne's fury. "Who knows what caused it?" says one. "Not even Daryl knows. He goes into blind rages and doesn't know what he does. He was trying to kick the door down." If so, he had regained his calm by the time the police arrived. According to Sergeant Gallinot, the singer told two officers, "Everything is fine." Since there were no visible signs of distress - --they never saw Hannah, says Gallinot--the men left and did not file a report. After the police had departed, Hannah's friends say, Daryl left the house and contacted her younger sister, Page, also an actress, who took Hannah to a local doctor to have her injuries treated. Two days later, Kennedy flew to L.A. and, after spending the weekend with Daryl visiting her ill stepfather, Jerry Wexler, in Palo Alto, Calif., he accompanied her back to New York City and the support of her friends. "Everyone who knows her has been encouraging her to leave [Browne]," says one longtime pal. "He has an explosive personality." Yet Browne's friends, who know the singer as a gentle if sometimes temperamental artist, find this description of a violent blowup almost incredible. "He's not the macho type. I'd be foolish to say he's not capable of it," says one associate. "Men are not always the same person with men that they are with women. But it sounds completely out of character." Since Hannah does not plan to press charges, there will be no legal winners or losers. Browne, friends say, has taken off to Northern California and is keeping a low profile, speaking even to his closest friends only by phone. Says Souther: "He is completely crazy about all this." Nobody knows whether Hannah is likely to become involved in a serious relationship with JFK Jr. What is certain, says one friend, is that this time she won't be going back to her home in Santa Monica--or to Jackson Browne: "We would never let her do that again." . . . ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 03 Jul 2000 16:31:10 -0700 From: RandyRemote Subject: To Blame or Not To Blame PT 2 SJC Did you know that Jackson Browne, when reacting to the song "Not To Blame", told a reporter in 1997 that Joni twice physically attacked him? I didn't. He also says that they hadn't known each other in 20 years, that she is an embittered violent person who feels she hasn't gotten her due as a musical innovator, and has carried a torch for him all this time. He derides her for not speaking to him directly about it, and concludes by saying he prefers to "think of her great works and not these kinds of bitter attacks." The entire news article from the Dallas Morning News is at http://www3.newstimes.com/archive97/sep2497/muf.htm A couple more articles: This is from USA Today 3-11-94 Who says people don't write letters anymore? Daryl Hannah's uncle, Haskell Wexler, and her ex-lover Jackson Browne exchange written rudities in the April US [magazine]. In a earlier issue, Browne denied beating Hannah in September 1992. Not true, writes Wexler. He penned the magazine, which sought Browne's reaction. "I was with her in the hospital. I saw ugly black bruises on her eye and chin and on her ribs," Wexler writes. "The doctors... noted Daryl as a 'badly battered woman.' "....I saw the results of the last violent attack...and there is no spin of fancy which will erase my shock and disdain." Browne's two-part reaction includes a lengthy statement from the Santa Monica Police Department, concluding: "no crime occured here. This whole thing is ridiculous." In a letter to Wexler published in US, Browne writes "you have believed the worst about me and not allowed me the opportunity to defend myself...I tried to reach you, but you would not return my call. "...I suggest that you allow me to describe Daryl's actions to you and then judge for yourself as to how those injuries may have occurred. I repeat: I did not beat her. "I have no desire to expose Daryl to public scrutiny in this matter. I have avoided describing her actions or characterizing her behavior so far. It has been hard." This is a snippet from a People Magazine cover story on JFK Jr. and Daryl Hannah, 8-16-93 ....Hannah too was otherwise engaged. For almost a decade the actress maintained a bicoastal relationship with singer Jackson Browne, 43, whom she first met as a teenager when he pulled her onstage from the audience at one of his Chicago-area concerts. It was the tempestuous ending to her romance with Browne that seems to have catapulted Hannah into Kennedy's arms. Last September a domestic quarrel at Browne and Hannah's $2.5 million Santa Monica home erupted in violence. According to close friends of Hannah, she ended up with a black eye, a broken finger and numerous bruises, although she never pressed charges against Browne. "I saw her shortly after in the hospital," says [Daryl's mother, Sue] Wexler. "I saw the damage that was done to her. The doctor was very concerned. Jackson was a very, very good friend of mine, but when I saw Daryl, I just felt betrayed." Kennedy immediately flew to her side and brought her back to New York City. ............ ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 03 Jul 2000 14:30:07 -0400 From: B Merrill Subject: Re: Not to Blame PS Once you get into the matter of what this song is about vs how Joni rationalizes it in that iterview, then the title become autbiographical! ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 03 Jul 2000 17:43:41 -0600 From: John Downes Subject: [Fwd: Voices: Joni Mitchell] This is a multi-part message in MIME format. - --------------C72899B6E9331168FB496D63 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Response from Giles Hebert, Mendell Gallery follows.... - --------------C72899B6E9331168FB496D63 Content-Type: message/rfc822 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Disposition: inline X-PPSource-MBox: johndownes@home.com X-PPAccount: johndownes Return-Path: Received: from h8.mail.home.com ([24.0.95.50]) by mail.rdc1.ab.home.com (InterMail v4.01.01.07 201-229-111-110) with ESMTP id <20000703190116.STDF25042.mail.rdc1.ab.home.com@h8.mail.home.com> for ; Mon, 3 Jul 2000 12:01:16 -0700 Received: from mx7-rwc.mail.home.com (mx7-rwc.mail.home.com [24.0.95.36]) by h8.mail.home.com (8.9.3/8.9.0) with ESMTP id MAA06288 for ; Mon, 3 Jul 2000 12:01:15 -0700 (PDT) Received: from indigo.quadrant.net (indigo.quadrant.net [207.195.92.9]) by mx7-rwc.mail.home.com (8.9.1/8.9.1) with ESMTP id MAA16952 for ; Mon, 3 Jul 2000 12:01:14 -0700 (PDT) Received: from [10.0.0.18] (mendel-gw.quadrant.net [207.195.92.225]) by indigo.quadrant.net (8.9.1/8.9.1) with ESMTP id NAA25509 for ; Mon, 3 Jul 2000 13:01:13 -0600 (CST) Mime-Version: 1.0 X-Sender: ghebert@mail.mendel.saskatoon.sk.ca Message-Id: In-Reply-To: <395EA8BC.D6D7B54E@home.com> References: <395EA8BC.D6D7B54E@home.com> Date: Mon, 3 Jul 2000 13:01:07 -0600 To: John Downes From: Gilles Hebert Subject: Re: Voices: Joni Mitchell Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" ; format="flowed" X-Mozilla-Status2: 00000000 >Dear John, Thanks for your eMail.. you're right we probably should have organized a signing table.... thanks so much for coming to the opening. >Dear Mr. Hebert: > >I write this letter to thank you for your hard work in preparing the >excellent exhibition of Joni's visual art. Faaaabulous song, and what a singer! ;) Turns out that Harry Warren, who wrote the music for "At Last," composed a few other ditties, like "I Only Have Eyes for You" and "Lullaby of Broadway." Today I happened onto a broadcast of "Fresh Air" that was the first of two programs about Harry Warren (this is an encore series, BTW--it has been broadcast before; the second program is scheduled for tomorrow). Terrific program! Terry Gross played lots of his music and conducted some wonderful interviews about Harry Warren. I'm going to check it out tomorrow, too...very highly recommended. Although today's program isn't up yet, "Fresh Air" has a web site with Real Audio files of all its programs.
