Adcock" Subject: Joni synchronicity - NJC Now before you wonder why this is marked NJC, let me explain! I have spoken before on-list about Jacqui Fitzgerald, who did the wonderful Joni covers on Bob's collection. I've been in contact with her recently, and she sent me a copy of her latest (1985!) CD. I wrote back to thank her, and to ask if she performs live anymore, since I would love to go see her in person. I got a letter back that made me instantly think "Woa! Joni-karma!" She says that she rarely performs live anymore. She still composes and produces (she owns her own recording studio) but has been painting full-time since she stopped performing. She's going to let me know when she has her next exhibition. So I'm thinking Jacqui / Joni, Saskatoon & Mendel / Auckland and Auckland City Art Gallery, not performing live much anymore, concentrating on painting, etc., etc. Spooky, or what! Hell P.S. Catherine (catrin of aragon) - I'm about to finish off your tape, but I've lost your email address, and I need your postal address to send it! _____________________________ "To have great poets, there must be great audiences too." - Walt Whitman hell@ihug.co.nz Visit the NBLs (Natural Born Losers) at: http://homepages.ihug.co.nz/~hell/ ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Jun 2000 04:25:03 EDT From: Dflahm@aol.com Subject: Re: Fred Walecki and Fred Simon (NJC) Kakki: Mabel Mercer sang For the Roses? With just four Heart songs, she filled out the set with some tunes from her side band, the Lovemongers, as well as covers of Joni Mitchell, Bacharach/Costello, Tina Turner and Paul McCartney. They tend to broadcast early morning shows from the east coast and as the day goes on, they move across the continent, so if I'm up early in the morning, I'd be hearing a show coming from Halifax; later in the day, you're hearing Toronto; by early afternoon/evening, you're hearing Vancouver. Get your free @yahoo.ca address at http://mail.yahoo.ca ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Jun 2000 17:36:27 GMT From: "John Stilwell" Subject: I had to chime in Greetings: First of all let me say that I am new to this group and I find that the level of discussion here is quite intelligent (for the most part)! Before I begin my rant: ****DISCLAIMER**** I came to find this group and the music of Joni Mitchell through her collaberations with such fine musicians as Pat Metheny and Jaco Pastorious. Ever since I first heard Joni Mitchell on the radio singing "Help ME" I knew that she had tremendous vocal range and I was quite impressed with the song structure. To this day, it is still one of my favorites! I may not be nearly as educated about her material as most of you, but I like what I have heard enough to go see her last month at the Boston Fleet Pavillion. IT was nice to see her playing with the orchestra and I was not surprised to see such fine musicians as Peter Erskine and herbie Hancock on the current tour. but I digress! ****END DICLAIMER*** One post that I read I must comment on! During the discussions about Eminem, one poster compared his phrasing style to Miles Davis and billie Holiday. This analagy is so far off the mark IMO that it is almost laughable. I'm sorry if I'm being offensive, but Miles and Billie will be rolling over anytime now with these comments! Let's see, Miles Davis: Regarded by many as the single greatest musician there ever was. Constantly surrounded with the greatest of the grerats: John Coltrane, John Mclaughlin, Tony Williams, Jack Dejohnette, Wayne Shorter, Bill Evans, Chick Corea, CannonBall Adderly, etc. etc. etc...... Mastered his instrument! Continued to try to find ways to change the face of music. Never rested with his most current projects, continued to change his stlyes and sounds in search of a more innovative attempt! Billie Holiday: Greatest female jazz singer ever? At least among the top! Phrasing style (But of course) still imitated and worshipped today! She was a singer and her songs came across with great emotion! Between the two of them (hundreds and hundreds of albums) Eminem: Will anyone remember him in twenty years? (Remains to be seen) I doubt it! What do they say about him? He tells it like it is. He aint afraid! etc. What about his "talent"? OK he writes lyrics (which many people find offensive) What instrument does he play? Can he sing? What part does he play in the production of his music? (Maybe a lot, I am unsure of this element) The only similarity that I can come up with to link Eminem to (Wait I cant put them in the same sentence!) is they all sell albums quite successfully! They have absolutely nothing in common musically! If people like to listen to Eminem that is fine. Music can be enjoyed on a real individual level. People can listen for different reasons at different times. It is not necessary to master an instrument to release an album. But, please when we are speaking of talent (especially on the newsgroup of a very talented singer/songwriter) let us speak of talent! btw (I have heard his material) ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Jun 2000 13:50:40 -0400 (EDT) From: Catherine McKay Subject: Re: Why Eminem/Kids & Canada NJC - --- Sue Cameron wrote: > Digest reply on many topics.. > > ........Kids and rap > My 15.5 year old daughter listens to Eminem. I don't think it's as bad as the media make out. There are gangs and many of them are based on race, but it's usually isolated to particular schools, or groups or neighbourhoods. There have been a few cases recently of innocent people being shot by people involved in drugs who were aiming for each other - one of these was a little kid playing in a park, for God's sake! There was an incident a few years back of a teenaged boy being knifed and killed by another as a result of a basketball game gone awry. All the players saw it happen, but no one would speak up about it, either for fear of reprisals from the "other" side (there was apparently a bit of a war going on between some Jamaican-Canadians and some Somali-Canadians) or for fear of being accused of being a traitor by their own "side". The mother of the boy who was killed pleaded in the media for someone to come forward, and the police offered an award, but some years later, no one has said anything about it. One of my nephews went to highschool at a school that was considered one of the "worst" in the city in terms of fighting, cops being called to the school on a fairly regular basis, but Chris said that, unless you were part of the few that belonged to the gangs involved, you probably wouldn't even notice it going on. All in all, I think we're pretty lucky. Anyone who tries to pretend that racism doesn't exist, or that they're completely without prejudice is fooling themself but for the most part, multiculturalism works well here, and we're all the richer for it. ===== Catherine (in Toronto) catrin_of_aragon@yahoo.ca _______________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I was totally struck by her style and substance. I haven't seen her in concert (except for some TV things) and had to miss (WAH!) the recent West Palm appearance due to work. I'm a writer who works as an assistant sports editor. In addition to music (my great loves also include Lindsey Buckingham, Fleetwood Mac, Aimee Mann, Liz Phair and Jeff Buckley), I love ice hockey (yeah, Devils!), snow skiing (don't get a lot of that here in Florida), the Yankees, and movies (Von Trier, Kieslowski and Woody Allen are favorites). It looks like you guys have a good time on this list, I look forward to meeting and greeting you all. (And the tape tree thing looks pretty good too. I have an extensive trade list - that seems to have everyone on it except Joni, so if you have a chance and some time, please email me privately.) Till then, see you on the list! paige- ===== "I keep the dream in my pocket never let it fade away..." And it doesn't matter when or how you discover her brilliance, just as long as you do! You'll find good company here with your other likes as well. Just yesterday I was talking with another member here about how incredibly AWESOME the "Buckingham-Nicks" album is. Still can't believe that hasn't been released on CD, luckily I resolved that problem as far as I'm concerned! ;-) So you're new to Joni. so I'm assuming you don't have ALL of her records yet? They're supposed to release that "some time." I think it's an awesome LP! Was just listening to it yesterday... I'll just talk Lindsey (and Mac) any time of the day or night! > So you're new to Joni. so I'm assuming you don't > have ALL of her records yet? > Nope, not even close. I have a couple on LP, a couple on CD and a couple 45s. It's great, cause I have a whole bunch of new stuff to discover. Any recommendations? paige- ===== "I keep the dream in my pocket never let it fade away..." Fleetwood Mac, "Tango in the Night" __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Raffaelle, you'll be glad to know your package arrived today, and of course I raced to the stereo with much anticipation. Gorgeous artwork! It looks like a professional job...but for me, the treasure is always the music, and this collection is full of treasures indeed! Of course, those of you who've heard her, either on CD, tape or live, Marian is awfully hard to top. And she's once again in top form here, doing some songs I'd heard before and some I hadn't. I had only "heard tell" of the majesty of her take on "Cotton Ave." It's twoo, it's twoo...this was totally jaw-droppersville! Of course, I had heard her "Lindsay" at Boston and also on the CD many, many times, but it's still chilling almost unbelievably good- makes all the hairs on my body stand up so that *I* look like The Wolf! :-) Chris Marshall provides some nice bass and some vocals (I think), and sounds great. Bring up the bass on the mix, Chris! If you've got it, flaunt it! :-) Jamie is one brave JMDL'er! He steps up and tackles some tough, tough songs, especially for someone with a baritone range. Don't Interrupt The Sorrow, Secret Place, Harry's House, Trouble Child, you get extra points for difficulty, Jamie! My personal fave, your version of Hejira (yes, it made me cry again you guys) and the lovely duet on Secret Place. I only have one complaint - Martin Giles shows up here but only contributes 1 song, a gorgeous, gorgeous version of For Free. Wonderful guitar, and a spot-on vocal. If you wanted to leave us thirsting for more, Martin, you were a resounding success! Anyway, the whole thing sounds like a great campfire-type gathering, the joy and fun just oozing out of the very grooves. Well, I guess a CD doesn't have grooves, but y'all get my drift! Thanks Raffi for getting this to me so quick, and thanks to all the UKer's who participated! It's a wonderful addition to the JMDL collection! What kind of Puget Sound area dweller am I? From what little I have heard of The Lovemongers, they are great. They give the Wilson sisters a chance to ditch the arena rock sound that Heart acquired in the 80s and get into a much more elemental sound. The EP they put out is great. These two women really create incredibly beautiful harmonies when they sing without all the distracting MOR rock that Heart was churning out. I wish they would do a whole cd of nothing but Lovemongers. We bought a membership to EMP but haven't gone to check it out yet. We'll probably wait until some of the brou-ha-ha dies down. I have to say that I think the building is ugly as sin but maybe I'll get used to it. I've been watching it go up as it's relatively close to where I work. Apparently the Eurythmics left the stage during the opening festivities at nearby Memorial Stadium because a VH1 helicopter was making so much noise that they couldn't hear themselves. (Can you imagine what Joni would have done?) All in all, though, there have been some good reports of some of the live music that has been happening there since the opening. Southbound I-5 sure was a mess around the exit to Seattle Center when we got back to town Friday night, though. Luckily, we were heading north towards home! I would expect this kind of comment from some neophyte trying to sound hip and attract attention. Coming from Nina Simone I have to wonder what the context of her thinking was. She couldn't have been referring to her singing. Personal style, maybe. But I doubt Nina would have become what she did if Billie hadn't been there before her. Simone has covered lots of songs that are identified with Billie. The emotional, powerful >song crashed to a sudden end i completely flipped out. this song is incredibly important in my life. originally written and recorded by jon anderson (of yes) and vangelis the film composer (they had a long-time side project) 'state of independence' was also recorded by donna summer, and her version (from her self-titled album of 1982, produced by quincy jones) is one of my favorite pieces of music ever. the slightly reggae-ish rhythm, the hippie-spiritual-family-bonding lyrics, it all hit me right there. in late '83 i choreographed a dance for myself and 5 dear friends to it; that dance still feels like one of the best things i've ever created. highly inspired by elizabeth a. lynn's novel, 'the dancers of arun', especially the concept of a band of six friends and colleagues, a 'chearas'. and in particular inspired by a friend of mine at the time, who introduced me to the music and the novel, and who was always part of my chearas. the world hasn't been in balance since he left it. in 1991 a faceless dance act called moodswings created a song called 'spiritual high' that included the slower verses of 'state of independence', sung by chrissie hynde, as well as the whole of martin luther king's 'i have a dream' speech. another favorite musical moment for me. so i would have loved to hear ann wilson sing this song, and i am so glad it still matters to people, especially people i admire as much as ann wilson. patrick np - donna summer - lush life srpimh - (still replaying in my head) lyrics from 'state of independence' as sung by donna home, be the temple of your heart home, be the body of your love just like holy water to my lips hey, hey ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Jun 2000 23:28:07 -0500 From: Michael Paz Subject: Jazz Fest on Line on 6/28/00 5:02 PM, Siresorrow@aol.com at Siresorrow@aol.com wrote: > dude,,from the richard thompson list.. > > JAZZ FEST 2000 WEBCAST TO RUN ON RIFFAGE.COM IN JULY: > MORE THAN 46 HOURS OF FREE MUSIC SCHEDULED OVER 18 NIGHTS > >> From the Dirty Dozen Brass Band to the traditional closing set of the > Neville Brothers, Jazz Fest 2000 has been digitized into a landmark > webcast of Louisiana and traditional music that starts on Wednesday, > July 5 on Riffage.com¹s webcast site, Riffage Live. I have been trying to post a schedule to the list for over a week. This is the work that I was doing with Michael Murphy Productions at Jazz Fest this year. Ani DiFranco was one of my faves to work with. Juanita Brooks had a smokin set in the Jazz Tent and she did a Joni tune. Missing from the list was Sting who had a great set, but was a little hoarse so maybe he pilled the plug on letting them use the footage. I am passing this on to the list for your info as well. She is one of the greatest, and most sensitive artists, ever. An amazing singer and a truly great pianist, but she's also a very angry, bitter, and paranoid woman. Nina was arrested a few years ago for shooting a gun at a couple of teenage boys for making too much noise outside of her home in France. Her interviews are always entertaining, sometimes disturbing, and usually contain outrageous comments. - Scott ------------------------------ End of JMDL Digest V2000 #360 ***************************** ------- Post messages to the list at Unsubscribe by sending "unsubscribe joni-digest" to ------- Siquomb, isn't she?
