I know of his "lyrics". Does she understand them? No. Does she sit with headphones and sing them? Yes. A big part of it for her is being able to sing f*ck out loud. Does she do this in my presence? No. Did I love to sing Woman of Heart and Mind when I was a 15 year old for the very same reason? Yes! I asked her the other day if she thought about what Eminem was saying in his songs. She replied that she liked the music and the beat of the rap, plus Eminem is cute and really cool. For those of you worried about this lasting I have two words for you. Vanilla Ice. .......Canada My home in northern Michigan is an hour from Canada (Sault Ste. Marie) and we go there often. My favorite illegal purhcase is an over the counter medication (what US citizens would call tylenol 3s). I get bad headaches and hate to run to the doctor for meds. The other reason is that having foster children we would have to have a locked cabinet for any prescription medication. This way I can have my meds and keep them with the mylanta :-) As was mentioned there is a lot of over the boarder shoping. We also buy cigarettes for my husband. Without the US taxes they are much less expensive. One of my guilty pleasures is Mike's Hard Lemonade. They sell it here in Michigan but it is a milder version made with malt. The Canadian mixture is made with a lovely vodka and goes down much smoother. Catherine, I love your city of Toronto (or as we hear it said when we are there, Tarrana). Is that like people saying DEEtroit when we pronounce it ditroit? Anyway, I was sad to hear that there is gang fighting going on. But Eminem doesn't say "I'm Marshall Mathers" or even "I'm Eminem." He says, "I'm Slim Shady." Slim Shady is an alterego of sorts, a play on superhero Clark Kent/Superman (or Jekyll/Hyde) imagery as well as MC performance names. Hip-hop has a long tradition of playing with identity and labels through nicknaming, with the MC taking a different name from the real-life person, or even just the person when they are not rapping (e.g. L-Boogie vs. Lauryn Hill). Slim Shady is not even his MC name, though; Eminem is. Slim Shady is another degree removed. And the point of the song, stated in the conclusion, is "There's a little Slim Shady in all of us." Marshall Mathers is not completely this ribald, hapless and sometimes cruel character, but you aren't completely removed from it either. The tune's point, to me, is that identities aren't as neatly divisible as we think they are. > But Jagger removes himself from this song in a way that Eminem > doesn't in say, "The Real Slim Shady:" He does, but not all that neatly. He does couch the sexually objectifying lyrics as the words of the slave trader, and thus critiques them on one level. But another he seems to own them, implying that he and the slave trader agree on one point: black women are hot. You are right to point out that by the standards of the time this wasn't seen as objectifying by many people, but that only goes back to my point about morality changing over time and differing between people. Eminem's lyrics: > I'm like a head trip to listen to, cause I'm only givin you > things you joke about with your friends inside your living room > The only difference is I got the balls to say it > in front of y'all and I don't gotta be false or sugarcoated at all are MC boasting, part of another long tradition. The internal rhymes and rhythms of this lyric don't read on the page as fascinating as they sound, and the sonic qualities are all important in this particular form. The other relevant point about boasting is that it is usually a mix of real arrogance and playful competition. And the speaking character, Slim Shady, resides in all of us, so maybe we all can be a "head trip to listen to" if we would have "the balls to say it." > I was sorry to read Eminem's lyrics because I do think he is a talented > writer and performer. But I'm not buying any of his music until he stops > rapping about killing his mother and gay people. Call me old fashioned, but > hate doesn't get my money. Fair enough. > And although I think race relations and racial equality in the US have made > many strides during the last thirty years, there's still a way to go. I think > that if Eminem were black, he and his #1 CD would be experiencing a media > backlash that just isn't happening to this white boy. I absolutely agree with this, but I think that Eminem's association with what is still seen as a black and underclass music form "taints" him to some degree. He may get off a bit with white privelege, but he may catch some shit as a man in blackface, or even a race traitor. (I'm not suggesting that this is what's going on this list in particular, but in the "world out there.") I also think that if he were less talented (ala Vanilla Ice), that might contribute to a larger backlash as well. And that the backlash is probably inevitable anyway. That's the way the biz works. Which is where we started this discussion, right? ;-) - --Michael NP: Louis Armstrong ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Jun 2000 11:20:00 EDT From: AsharaJM@aol.com Subject: Chez Ashara's is now FULL!!! Les The Wonderful, has updated the Jonifest information, and has made it incredible easy to fill out the questionnaires online and push a "send to Ashara" button. Too cool, and looks GREAT!!! Thank you Les!!!! All the information is at: http://www.jmdl.com/nejf2000.cfm or you can access it by going to the main page and clicking on: The 3rd Annual New England JoniFest is happening Labor Day Weekend north of Boston! Details here... Please send all requirements as soon as possible so I am not doing things last minute, which makes me crazy. And most importantly, please sign up for the special Jonifest mailing list so we can take these discussions there. Thanks!! Excellent job! It's April 2 - howja know? howja know? I think I mentioned once that I'm an Aries, so that's a good bet ain't it! Enjoy Tierra del Fuego - I've always loved that name even before I figured it out that Del Fuego is a pretty close approximation of what McKay would translate into Spanish as. (Son of the Firy - or is it Firey? one it looks weird either way - I don't know if that means that the original "Ay" had a bad temper or was just a redhead!) If I changed my name to Catalina del Fuego, I'd sound too much like either a drag queen, a stripper, or a 40s movie star a la Dolores del Rio! ===== Catherine (in Toronto) catrin_of_aragon@yahoo.ca _______________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? We rehearsed Joni's "Cherokee Louise" (the lone cover tune) and it sounded so damn good that one of the guys said, "Man, it sucks when the cover tune is better than the originals." To which I replied, "No, no ... it's *great* when the originals are as good as the cover!" And they are. He was in Nashville prior to the fatal flight, my husband the Seagull/Godin rep talked with him at the summer NAMM, Marcel played Godin Acousticaster guitars. This is from the web, a reprint of a People Mag article: Before heading to the United States to be inducted into the country-music Walkway of Stars in Nashville, Frenchman Marcel Dadi was ecstatic. "Do you realize what a fabulous gift they're giving me?"he exclaimed to a friend. Dadi's induction came on July 11--six days before he was to fall from the sky with 229 other souls aboard Flight 800. Dadi, 44, a guitarist with a wide following in Europe, was the first Frenchman so honored in Nashville. Best of all, one of those witnessing the ceremony was Nashville immortal Chet Atkins, whose finger-picking guitar style had been Dadi's inspiration. "This was the greatest honor Marcel could ever have wished for," says his sister Martine Fournier, 40. "He was at a peak of happiness." His path to bliss had begun nearly 30 years ago, when the Tunisian-born Dadi, who lived in Paris, first heard some of Atkins's recordings. Though he trained as a physical therapist, Dadi immersed himself in the guitar and several years later met Atkins in person. "I invented the style," says Atkins, 72, who was best man at Dadi's wedding in 1977, "and he improved on it." Dadi, who was also a respected guitar teacher, gave more than 1,000 concerts and sold 2 million albums. After his Nashville induction, Dadi had planned to fly to Israel to join his wife, Catherine, 37, and their children, Samuel, 16, Joachim, 15, and Maayane, 7, on vacation. "He was the Pope of country [music] in France," says friend Vincent Nanty, "except that the Pope can be replaced, and he can't." ------------------------------ End of JMDL Digest V2000 #358 ***************************** ------- Post messages to the list at Unsubscribe by sending "unsubscribe joni-digest" to ------- Siquomb, isn't she?
