Who does she think she is? (You have to give her credit for audacity if nothing else, though.) >> I thought it was an incredibly gutsy move on her part; utterly fearless. I can think of a couple other records (Prince's 'Sign O' the Times being the immediate one) where a condemnation of this order is addressed, but it's typically black on black. In this case, she condemns the white man selling slaves who "knew it was wrong but looked away" , then later the spirit of the slave returns, having progressed from slave to citizen, and observes a brother or sister throwing their life away on drugs. So there's an anger, a "*THIS* is what you're doing with the freedoms we've worked so hard for?" that is very moving to me. I don't pick up any arrogance, but of course, we are all open to our interpretation. "Brave" is the word for this record. She's extremely brave in her musical choices, few at her age and stage will rock this hard with such conviction and still dig emotionally to present a fully-realized work like this. That emotional honesty is what I admire, both in this record and of course in Joni's catalog... Supposedly, she was at a party in New York. She was in a room that had mirrors everywhere; the walls, ceiling, etc. And one guy came around asking everybody what was laughter. He finally came to Joni and she said she would have to write back to him on it. And so "People's Parties" was born. I'm a terrible storyteller so maybe Bob can fix the holes. I urge anyone even remotely near Chicago to come out to hear a very special band, Into the Green, at their CD release gig this coming Wednesday, June 28. Their intelligent and moving pop/jazz/soul music is some of my most favorite, and which I would classify as "tunes I wish I had written." Their wonderful album, Ghettos and Oceans, was produced mostly by Steve Rodby, bassist and co-producer of the Pat Metheny Group, and of the Fred Simon Group. In their delicious musical stew one can taste pinches of Joni (in fact, we did a fantastic Cherokee Louise at the last gig, hopefully will do it again), Steely Dan, Seal, Marvin Gaye, Sting, Pat Metheny, and more. But it's really their own thing, and very groovy at that. Believe me, I'd feel the same even if I weren't playing with them. Into the Green is: Paul Oakley Stovall - vocals Steve Goers - piano accompanied by: Steve Rodby - bass (Pat Metheny Group and Fred Simon Group) Tom Hipskind - drums (Fred Simon Group) Chris Siebold - guitar Fred Simon - keys Lisa Lougheed - vocals Wednesday * June 28, 2000 10 pm-ish (there's an opening act; please call club to confirm show times) Martyrs * 3855 N. One of your members caught me on rollingstone and said I should drop you all a line. Hi Loree Well, I went to the Joni/Bob tour when they landed here in Indy. I guess it's been a couple of January's ago. I couldn't believe my ears when I heard the news about the tour, and that they would play Indianapolis. Luckily a couple lady friends accompanied me to Market Square Arena that evening. I thought Joni was on it. I was impressed. I didn't know what to expect, I had never been to one of her shows. I never heard of her playing anywhere before (I'm not paying much attention, am I?). I've heard people say something like her voice isn't as good. Well, I'm a pretty good judge, I believe, and I couldn't tell there was a problem. Maybe it was because I was awsruck. Like, she played the first half of the show solo. I've been a fan of Joni since about 1980. I have thought she is a superior wordsmith ever since the first time I listened. I want to know how to do that myself. If it wasn't work and studying all the time, maybe I'd write. But that's just an excuse. Anyway, if any of you know a good book to use to learn more about songwriting, especially lyrics, dropped me a line :-) Get 100% FREE Internet Access from Freei.Net. 100% FREE, 100% Anonymous, 100% Jam Packed with features.
