(Sorry, Les ). This was my very first Joni concert, which followed a year in which I devoured with near-maniacal devotion every single album she had released until that point. I seem to recall that my ticket for a lawn seat cost $17--ah, those were the days! Joni did play about 7 or 8 songs before calling it a day. I also recall that she made motions from the stage as if to tell us to swim home in the pelting rain--but then again, that was many dim years ago, and I'm not sure I trust my memory of it today. I find it awkward to join in conversations in progress. I feel a bit like an outsider (a typical JM listener?), in part because I am Canadian. I must adjust to the American perspective and perhaps the American personality if I am to participate in this. MItchell was born and raised in Canada and has spend her adult years mostly in California. Maybe I should say entirely in California, because her time in Canada is limited to holidays, I think. Although she paints varied pictures, "California" is the prevalent setting for them. To me, Mitchell's voice still sounds Canadian. In my opinion, her Canadian sensibility is the source of her ambivalence towards American popular culture. Anyone care to comment? That was in 1967. I think her poetry and music changed me from that moment on. In particular, "Hejira" remains imprinted in my memory, and to hear a single chord or simply recall a line brings me back a lot of years. In truth, the pleasure is sometimes mixed with sadness over the passing of time. What is it, exactly, that makes this music so evocative? Although Mitchell's work has been so influencial to my own creative development (I too have tried to look at life from "both sides"), I have not read much serious critical commentary on it. One day, I imagine, critics on our CBC will discuss her music as they do now Stravinsky or Chopin, and it will be justly appreciated for its significant expression of our place and time. The Jungle?? ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 19 Jun 2000 13:22:28 -0700 From: Louis Lynch Subject: www.rollingstone.com trashes joni Hi all, Thanks for pointing out some of the worst of human nature -- the posts on the rollingstone web site! What an unpleasant surprise to see the garbage that people are cycling through their brains. I noticed on the rollingstone discussion list, many of the people referred to Joni as a bitch or worse. But, more disappointing was the overal nature of the posts -- threats, insults, total stupidity. If you ever really crave the need to feel that people aren't civilized anymore, take a gander at some of the other discussion lists -- the infantile stabs at Joni are mild in comparison. Lately that seems to be the way of the world doesn't it? Weak little wits firing their high school toughboy shots at each other, and whoever else is in range. Some of the lyrics coming from the newer groups are awful. Just the other day I heard a rap song from an imposing boombox with lyrics that just made me want to cry, in sympathy for people who think they need to listen to trash like that It's just as bad on television -- anyone accidentally hear what some of those professional wrestlers are saying to each other? And what's with the "piss on" decal on all the cars out there? I noticed formative signs of this prevailing fuckyou attitude 20 years ago, when the local rock station starting urging listeners to crank it up and "really piss off the neighbors." Now it's everywhere. Even "mature" guitarist Pat Metheny felt he needed to fire a few shots at Kenny G -- no different and not much wittier than the rollingstone pubescents. Does anyone remember the old song/poem "Desiderata" they used to play on AM radio? Am I starting to become a worthless old has-been of a human because I still think it's pretty much the way to go? Am I weird for not feeling the need to put people down, tell them to kiss one of my body parts or (gasp!) considering overall consequences before I talk or write? Personally, I can't wait until godlessness, inane immorality and social ignorance stop being hip. If they ever do. The latest generation of folks seems to be suffering from the worst social depravity in history. Even though I'm a dyed-in-the-cotton-Tshirt hippie, if I have to choose between Marilyn Manson's philosophy or the religious right, hand me the Bible and the tracts to pass around. I would urge all jmdl-ers not to post on the rollingstone discussion boards. From what I've seen, this jmdl list has a whole bunch of incredibly intelligent and sophisticated people. The posters on rollingstone don't deserve our response -- why give them credibility? Sorry, but I'm feeling a lot of lost hope for this next generation right now. I just had a talk with a young drummer friend of mine (24). He was telling me some of the exploits of a certain party house he frequents -- "cute" little stories about how enough Ecstasy can turn an 18-year-girl into an animal who will do all the men in the place. How the best sex is when you don't know the other person's name. How last weekend they were partying on the rooftop, and they got the German Shepherd drunk for kicks -- the dog lost his bearings and fell three stories to the pavement below. They recorded the dog's anguished howling, and one of the rock musicians has dubbed it as a "cool" background track on his current recording. There are more stories, I'm sure. But I made him stop. I guess, like the middle age man I now am, I showed utter contempt for it all. He told me that I was being a hypocrite -- rock musicians need decadence, and we did drugs and had sex and all that when we were his age. But, the big difference is that we still recognized some sense of human value. Mick Jagger was still inviting someone to spend the night together - -- not drugging her to do it. I guess we were so busy with our sex, drugs and rock and roll, we forgot to carry those value forward to our kids, eh? Could someone counter the rollingstone site with something hopeful? I'm feeling a bit vamped out here. In a message dated 6/19/00 4:12:49 PM Eastern Daylight Time, mariko sano Hi Ron and welcome to the JMDL. We have lots of wonderful people on this list who are Canadian, so please be yourself and don't adjust a thing. We've discussed Joni's *Canadian* sounding voice plenty of times and you probably won't get much disagreement there. As far as her Canadian sensibilities ........., I have no idea. As to your second post in which you wrote: < I don't want to dictate tastes and pleasures; I only look forward to communicating with others about Joni Mitchell's work.> You probably need to join the Joni Only list. It was created for people just like yourself, who only want to read about Joni Mitchell and her work. Occasionally other posts may slip through the cracks, so just be patient with us if it happens. In the meantime, switch to the other list and we'll all enjoy reading what you have to say about Joni and her work. Again welcome and enjoy ! Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris, Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne, David Crosby and Graham Nash will perform along with special guests David Lindley, Randy Meisner, Warren Zevon, Chris Hillman and Colin Hay (Men at Work). Tickets will go on sale at all Ticketmaster outlets on Saturday, June 24 at 10 a.m. Special Golden and Silver Circle ticket packages are available through the Guacamole Fund at 1-800-728-6223. The Friends of Fred Walecki are donating their time to do this benefit concert to raise money to help Walecki and his family. Walecki has had serious surgery causing disability, due to throat cancer, has two young children and has incurred many medical expenses not covered by insurance. Walecki, the proprietor of Westwood Music, has been a friend of the Los Angeles musicians' community for more than 30 years. Westwood Music has been a gathering place for many musicians who have gone on to have very successful careers, including those who will be appearing at the Santa Monica Civic on Aug. 8. According to Leadon, one of the organizers of the event: "We are trying to create a neighborhood feel. Fred has spent his life serving the Westside, so the Santa Monica Civic seems the perfect place to celebrate this community of musicians, which he had a big part in nurturing." Bernie went on to say: "The house band will include Ry Cooder, Jennifer Condos, Andy Fairweather Low, Ethan Johns, Wix and myself. It should be a great musical evening." Then around posting #30 it went in the trash (or somewhere below that). These folks literally scared away the positive postings. It would be a shame to let the ignorant defile Joni. Starting with posting #61, things have turned around. I would HIGHLY encourage folks to put their wisdom there. Individuals out there that are just discovering Joni need it!!! It is amazing. I have never wrote to anyone who wasn't a close friend. Thanks. I got interested in this group because when I decided to go to the concert in Boston I mentioned Joni Mitchell and how much her music meant to me and I got blank stares back or else someone would say that yes they remembered her. Wasn't she the one who sang, "They paved paradise. . ." and that was it. I realized they never heard "Hejira" . None of that poetry or music had ever touched their lives. Those songs brought so much to me I can't express it. I am not a musician-but I used to write poetry and had a few things published in the 70's and early 80's. I was an English major and I love poetry. I had a child in 83 who I raised alone and somehow during those years(all so foggy) I stopped writing but never stopped reading or listening to music. Are there any Joni people here in Maine? I went to the concert with two people from Maine who are my age (babyboomers) and on the way told me they never listened to her and kept complaining I was taking them to a folk concert. Well, they loved her and blasted "Shadows and Light" all the way to Portland. My son took me to the coast today. We both were free which is rare. We drove to Washington County and had clams and drove out to Beal's Island. On the way home I played the song "Turbulent Indigo" and my son and I discussed the music and Van Gogh etc. It was wonderful.
