First Circle Pat Metheny Group (the classic "white" album) The two someone mentioned, Secret Story and We Live Here, are also great, but Secret Story is a Metheny "solo" record, not collaboration with Lyle Mays (the two have a Lennon/McCartney-like symbiosis), and We Live Here is a very successful experiment with integrating hip-hop drum loops into the Metheny/Mays intelligent melodic/harmonic brilliance. Leonard" Subject: Re: Need Metheny Advice (NJC) All of the Metheny suggestions have been great ones, but I still have to recommend that Jim (or anybody with the albums he has, ending with Offramp) next hear Travels, the 2-CD live set chronicling the Offramp Tour. I see Pat's career (particularly as it pertains to the Pat Metheny Group with Lyle Mays) as a "journey," where each album has built upon the discoveries of its predecessor. Although Travels contains live versions of some previously released material, like "Phase Dance" and "San Lorenzo" from the classic "white" album, only "Are You Going With Me?" is currently in Jim's collection. These older tunes (the three just mentioned, plus "As Falls Wichita, So Falls Wichita Falls") benefit from more mature interpretations than those on the original studio albums. What makes Travels even more essential is the wealth of material not available elsewhere, much of which points to the continued growth heard in such albums as First Circle and Still Life (Talking). Guest percussionist/vocalist Nana Vasconcelos is given a much larger role here than on Offramp or As Falls Wichita (on which he also appeared), and this expanded collaboration points the way toward the Group's addition of multi-instrumentalists/vocalists Pedro Aznar for First Circle, and Mark Ledford/David Blamires for Still Life (Talking), and a greater integration of Brazilian and other South American influences. The previously unreleased material itself is wondrous, and pivotal. I couldn't conceive of successfully charting Metheny's astonishing growth during this period without having heard the joyous "The Fields, The Sky," the heartbreaking "Goodbye," the beautiful, stately "Farmers Trust," the reflective "Travels," and the exhiliarating "Song For Bilbao." Pat and Lyle had also introduced the Roland Guitar Synthesizer and the Synclavier, respectively, to their instrument arsenals at the time of Offramp. On Travels, we witness their further integration into the PMG sound. First Circle would next take these developments even further, and would also coincide with the introduction of the Synclavier Guitar Synthesizer by New England Digital, created with Pat's help. I could go on and on, but I won't. :-) Suffice it to say that Pat's was one of the "favorite careers" I listed some weeks ago, and, like Joni's and the others' I included on my list, his career is a journey best experienced, imho, chronologically. I've waited for each successive album knowing I'll be learning something new. Whereas those kind of small single family house > are all over lower-middle class LA... More LA than Queens I'd guess. But > "guesses at most," you know... Those little houses are all over the place. They're indicative of post World War II housing developments that sprang up outside cities, usually on farmland all over the US, the city as rendered is a mish-mash of American cities, they're "Levittown", "cookie-cutter" houses. Four of the "cookie-cutter" houses are rendered in the cover art, they surround what is a protypical farmhouse - the 2 story one with the porch. The "jungle line" of the city, has encroached on the farms. The church is not central to this suburb, it's literally out in "left field", precariously perched on the edge a cliff, in danger of falling off and being wiped out completely. God is not central to this society. To take it one step further (one step too far? :>) the house closest to the church is the only one with some lawn furniture out front, maybe an indication that it's inhabitants are closer to nature? closer to God, closer to nature? The cover is printed in 4 colors: 1. Green- the grass (the "lawn") and the title 2. Black -the line art, the song titles, the graphic of the "snake haulers" and "Joni Mitchell" 3. Aqua-Joni's pool and the house on the far right 4. Metallic silver-everything else Additionally the snake and "primitive men" are embossed on the orignal LP cover, another "jungle line", a dead snake it's primitive hissing replaced by the hissing of lawn sprinklers. The house on the far right to me, is the interesting one. That house and the pool are stand-outs as they are the only things printed in aqua. The reason for this could be as simple as a device to move one's eyes across the artwork, or it could be a visual metaphor of the American Dream..."Look! you could move from this little ranch house to this Bel-Air mansion!", in fact parked in front of the house is a car, (a symbol, an integral part of the American Dream) to facilitate that movement. The cover art is, as Joni states in the liner notes, integral to the whole, to the total work. The artwork graphically represents many themes explored lyrically and musically in the album: Jungle line, suburbia, wealth. I still don't think that the mystery mentioned in those notes (Bruce! :>) refers to the "total work", but rather to how the totality was acheived. All the needed information is there for the final part of the whole, the listener, and the viewer to interpret. >>Much as I love FTR I have to admit that this is probably her finest hour. >I'll drink to that, Me too. And the original Levittown was near NYC, right? I used to think that maybe they were from somewhere in New Jersey looking across to Manhattan. I recall someone here once saying that the "farmhouse" in the center was her house in Laurel Canyon and from photos I've seen, it does resemble that house. Here's another theory I came up with - could they have been some of the little houses that Joni lived in from North Battleford all the way to Bel Air? I also wondered at the aqua-color link between the first house on the far left and the Bel Air house on the back cover. She thanks "North Battleford, Saskatoon, Bel Air, Burbank, Burundi, Orange County, Dixie and National Geographic" - could be a tie in to the cover art. Most of those little houses definitely look like the post-war neighborhoods that sprung up in Burbank and Orange County. Prototypical suburbia. Bruce, your posts have been fantastic to read. I must tell you, however, that a lot of those little houses in L.A. now go for as much as $600,000 depending on the location. It's going the same way in parts of NoCal, too. Growing up my mother would sing me a song that would just put me right to sleep. It was a very emotional lullaby she once told me it was a song she had found out of a Joni Mitchell guitar book. I have been through all the lyrics posted on this page, but none of them are my song....... Here are a couple of lyrics that she would sing: if I were foolish I'd follow the sun but I must not let my hopes run to far ................ All I know is that you are the one if you will follow me if you will follow me if you will follow me ............... I was hoping this would by a wonderful birthday present for her but I need some h.elp with the title, etc. thanks Lookn2myi@aol.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 18 Jun 2000 17:18:02 -0600 From: Bounced Message Subject: thank you Date: Sat, 17 Jun 2000 16:58:11 -0400 (EDT) From: mariko sano Friends, I read through your website today with interest. I was ten when our music teacher taught us "The Circle Game." That was in 1967. I think her poetry and music changed me from that moment on. In particular, "Hejira" remains imprinted in my memory, and to hear a single chord or simply recall a line brings me back a lot of years. In truth, the pleasure is sometimes mixed with sadness over the passing of time. What is it, exactly, that makes this music so evocative? Although Mitchell's work has been so influencial to my own creative development (I too have tried to look at life from "both sides"), I have not read much serious critical commentary on it. One day, I imagine, critics on our CBC will discuss her music as they do now Stravinsky or Chopin, and it will be justly appreciated for its significant expression of our place and time. All the best to you, and thank you for the marvelous website! I have been a Joni fan since I bought Turbulent Indigo and since then have collected all of her work. Recently, Jackson Browne came through here on his acoustic tour.( I live in Little Rock, AR) I went to the concert with some friends that are huge Browne fans. I have to say I was impressed by not only his song-writing skills but his vocals were amazing. I really knew nothing about him or his work until the concert. After seeing him live I did a little research about him and of course ran across the Daryl Hannah contraversy. I also heard for the first time about the song Joni wrote about him, "Not to Blame" off of Turbelent Indigo. So, what do you guys know about this and also her relationship with him, their history etc. I know they are both from California and I am sure hung around in the same circles..but what really happened for her to write this song.??? Just real curious. Thanks. Yeah, on Long Island. I didn't mean that the houses were literally Levittown, I think Levittown houses are those little half-capes with a central door, I meant that they would comprise that sort of development. > I used to think that maybe > they were from somewhere in New Jersey looking across to Manhattan. Well Manhatten as depicted is viewed from New Jersey. The Chrysler Building and the Empire State Building are recognizable, the Empire State is south of Chrysler so the view is from the west, it appears to be from the northwest. The skyscraper to the right of the Empire State, because of it's height would have to be 1 Penn Plaza, if veiwed from the NW it's placement in the skyline would be just about right. The Paramount Building is also recognizable (the stepped back building directly behind the farmhouse). >She thanks "North > Battleford, Saskatoon, Bel Air, Burbank, Burundi, Orange County, Dixie and > National Geographic" - could be a tie in to the cover art. She left out Toronto and Detroit! She also thanks Blue, which seems to me additional proof that Blue is James Taylor; he provides vocals on" In France They Kiss on Main Street", and guitar on the title track. Just real curious. Thanks. Sarah >> I won't comment on the Daryl Hannah controversy, except to say that in ALL such incidents there is no one version that is the truth. As for earlier, Joni helped launch Jackson's career by having him as her opening act on her 1972 tour, which I caught in late January '72 at the Arie Crown Theater in Chicago's McCormick Place. Jackson was a big hit then, even though he was an unknown whose first album would not come out for several more weeks. I do not know if they were lovers, but I know they were good friends at the time. In a bit of a turnabout, Jackson repaid the favor (in not necessarily to Joni herself) by having Karla Bonoff as his opening act on his "Running on Empty" tour later in the '70s, which might have been the peak of his popularity. I also saw Jackson in his solo tour late last month and enjoyed it immensely. At the time I posted a link to the review I wrote under a pen name for a Florida web site. If you would like to read it, I will send it to you. It's very interesting and alot of it is what we've heard/read before in other interviews. I have limited access to a C.D. burner, so I can't burn too many copies, I should be able to make a Master if someone else doesn't mind organising it :-) Thanking you, Vanessa. N.P. As for the Darryl Hannah incident, Joni has denied that "Not to Blame" was written specifically to that - Darryl was physically abused by Jackson.
