The word tree in hebrew is “etz” which is the “base” for the word “utz” that is job’s country. Once again I have no idea what’s the christian translation to the bible, I’ll just translate what rashi writes: “etz pri” – (fruit tree – nuriel) rashi writes: fruit tree – “that the taste of the tree will be like the taste of the fruit and she (earth – nuriel) didn’t do so but she did a tree that makes fruit and not a fruit tree and that’s why when adam was cursed and punished she was cursed and punished too”. On genesis chapter 3 eve says to the snake that she and adam were told not to eat from the tree and not to touch it or they’ll both die and then the snake tells her “you will not die”. Rashi on the snake’s “you will not die” – “the snake pushed eve till she touched the tree and eve saw that she was still alive and then the snake told her if there’s no death in touching there’s no death in eating”. It goes on in chapter 3 when the snake tell’s adam and eve “you will not die because god knows that once you’ve eaten from it your eyes will open…”. Rashi on “because god knows” – “the snake told eve that god has eaten from the tree in order to create the world”. Then the plot goes on when eve is eating the fruit and at once “gives to her man too”. Rashi on “gives to her man too” – “eve was afraid that she will die and he will live and marry another woman”. On that same line rashi writes on the word “too” – “too” –“ eve gave it to the all the animals in the garden too”. Then after they’ve eaten the fruit it goes to “and the eyes of them both were open and they knew they were naked…” Rashi on that – “it’s not about eyes that see something but about wisdom because even the blind knows that he’s naked! So what’s they knew they were naked? They had only one promise to keep and stripped off of it”. Rashi on the figleaf – “figleaf” – “it was a figtree, and with the same thing they sinned they were fixed" and rashi writes – “why then the word figtree isn't there but only tree? Because god didn't want that everyone will point at the tree and say that's the thing the ruined this world". These are only few notes from rashi I'll do my best to send more to you. Immediately, I saw that she was better and different than anyone else I had ever heard. I stayed through all the jazz (which I love). only a couple of early 80's albums didn't catch me but that may well be I was raising an infant alone and was preoccupied and unfocused. I have all her stuff esp. love Hejira and it has given me moments of strength and beauty. I saw her in Boston. I traveled from this god forsaken place (Northern Maine). Enjoyed it very much but the seats could have been better. I saw her once before in Providence around 1979 (Shadows and Light concert). I think she is the best of the best. And welcome to the group. As you have already noted, it is a very diverse group, and MOSTLY we stay on our topic but sometimes we wander and discuss other musical and arts topics or sometimes REALLY go out in left field. When we do that, we put an "NJC" in the subject line of our message so that those who only want to read & write about Joni can tune it out. NJC means "No Joni Content". Our brilliant webmaster Les has created a special list which will filter out all the NJC messages (as long as the participants will remember to use the NJC tag, which has slipped of late, myself included...) If you want Only Joni, then you have the option of subscribing to the "OnlyJoni List" or "OnlyJoni Digest"... Again, thanks for finding us and I look forward to your participation! All I know is, half the people who work where I work USED to work for the CBC, so, if you want TV work, Canada's national broadcasting company is probably not the route to go. And he was lucky to strike up a friendship with their sound guy who would let him plug into the soundboard for lots of shows. << PS: Bob, are you ever going to post a review of the Jackson concert you were supposed to attend??? >> That's so funny MG, because I was thinking of that show in context of the JB talk that flew around here this week. And I did carry on a private conversation off list about it (Hi Darice!), so I felt like I got it out of my system. But I'll be glad to recall some of it for you.... The Peace Center in Greenville is a WONDERFUL venue. It's small enough to be intimate and big enough to house acts like JB and Bonnie Raitt. The acoustics are perfect. I hope to hear Joni here on her next tour, especially since the Greenville Symphony typically does fund-raisers where for $100 you can attend a private meet and greet with the artist. Enough about the venue, on with the show. This was JUST JB, performing acoustic guitar and piano. He was VERY casual, had about 10 guitars around him, and was letting the audience dictate the show. As much as this was pretty cool, it was also a little annoying because no sooner was one song over before all these SC rednecks started competing with other, yelling out requests. Very embarrassing for us classy South Carolinians (is that an oxymoron?). But the show was great! He did a LOT of "Late For the Sky" stuff, which I think is one of his best. He also did a very extended "Doctor My Eyes" with all kinds of additions! This was one of the highlights of the show imo...he did a masterful job of performing songs old and new that still had significance to him, just like our Joni does. One of the other highlights was "Too many Angels", one of his best songs from his 90's release "I'm Alive" which stands with his best work. I'm sure he was disappointed with the crowd that kept yelling for the same old songs, but he had great energy and seemed to be enjoying himself immensely. I wish I had recorded it as I had a great seat and the sound was superb! As yet, I have no equipment to do that... Final note: Jackson was taken aback when a lady in the crowd asked him to play his new white guitar. (She called out the brand but I forget what it was). Jackson kept asking her how she knew about the white guitar, and she said "Oh, we know ALL about you!", so I silently figured to myself that there is a JB list and this person was a part of it... You can see lots of timber frame houses over there. HOSL is featured in a brilliant book published by DK last year called 100 Best Album Covers (The Stories Behind The Sleeves). It's written by the founders of Hipgnosis who designed famous sleeves for people like Led Zepplin, Pink Floyd, Rolling Stones etc. It's a really lavish and informative book and seems ridiculously cheap at around a tenner. It's got a forward by Peter Blake who's retrospective at the Tate was one of the best art experiences I've ever had. Phew ! Unfortunately they didn't talk to Joni but they do make a few interesting points which may interest my fellow inner circle pals. The house in the far corner is an aerial view of her house in Bel Air. Norman Seeff explains how he got the strange colour tone on the pool shot "I went to Joni's house, where we hung out and took some pictures. I suggested some shots in the pool, which turned out to be very evocative and sensuous. It was probably by accident rather than design that they appeared on the cover at all. The photograph is in monochromatic colour, shot with a Nikon camera on Kodachrome film in natural daylight." And this to further muddy the Rolling Stone waters : "In 1991, Rolling Stone voted the album number 11 in the best album covers of all time." Much as I love FTR I have to admit that this is probably her finest hour.
