Isn't it *already* written down somewhere? Didn't Joni write it down for herself so she wouldn't forget the words? It's "bully" winds - like the schoolyard bully who pushes the smaller kids' faces into the snow (we in the frozen nort' are all too familiar with this winter ritual!), the "bully winds" do the same to the autumn leaves. On a related note, I called the Mendel's gallery gift shop last week for some info. They really couldn't give me the details I was seeking yet, specifics on prices and which prints might be available, but I did come away with a little to share with all interested. First off, they do take orders and will ship anywhere....YAY! The exhibit catalog, he was pretty sure, is going to be $35 Canadian (about $23.50 US) which sounds like a great price, imho! He said for sure there will be a poster available but couldn't specify which or guess that price. In talking with him, it didn't sound encouraging we'll get many of the particulars until just a day or two before the exhibit opening, so maybe the best bet is going to be for those going to relay the info on "what" and "how much" in our first hand accounts. But he did give me a name and e-mail addy for someone he suggested I contact to get the most up to date info on merchandise. When I receive that reply, I'll pass it on here. The show was magnif! I arrived in Philly a bit early for the show but too late for the dinner. So I parked at Penns Landing and crossed Walnut by Bookbinders. I had a draught of Jefferson's recipe in the City Tavern and a quick Bruschetta at a bistro across the street. I then took the 7:30 ferry over to the show. It was lovely and exceeded all my expectations. I did keep one eye out for you people but to no avail. I thought I saw someone whose mug I recognized from the gallery but I was not sure. I met a pair of really fine ladies that kept my attention during the break. On the ferry ride after the show I ran into some local Scranton acquaintances that were staying downtown. We shared a spliff on the waterfront and I headed home. I still to this day have not bought BSN. I wanted to wait until after I saw the show so as not to spoil it. I went in having never heard any of it except Stormy Weather on Temple radio and At Last on Letterman. I never saw Rosie and I turned off my Tribute vhs right where Joni comes on, and never finished it. I doubt that the album will really do justice to what I saw and heard, esp. since I'm such a lover of live music so consider this a grovel for the live recording of Camden. I promise to celebrate all future MLK Jr birthdays as if they were my own. In fact, they are, we share 1/15! :) BTW, when she told the Beethoven story, I almost screamed out Maizel (sp?) as the name of the inventor of the metronome. And, no, I did not look that up when I got home. I actually knew it from 6th grade chorus: "Tick tock tick tock tick tock tick tick-a tock, tick-a tock, tick-a tock we sing to you Mr. Maizel Tick tock tick tock tick tock tick tick-a tock (rest rest rest) Here's to your wondrous machine counting time tick-a tick tock tick tock tick tick tock tick-a tock, Oh mighty metronome" You can't make that shit up and you DON'T need a PHd. Anyway, I decided NOT to yell it because she probably knew damn well it was Maizel but was just being cute and "dumbing it down" for those barbarians in the audience lacking a proper education. "MetronoMEE", indeed. My favorite covers were "Answer Me" & Trouble Man. My favorite Joni tunes were ACOY, JOTMAS, FTR & Be Cool which just swung with all those horns. My only least fav of the night was BSN which just lay there like so much schmaltz, and all the life sucked out of it. I thought the orchestra was wonderful and the sax player wins MVP for literally saving and turning many of the songs from potential disasters into beautifully, understated, well received pieces. Not the best concert I've ever seen, or even so far this year, but a winner nonetheless. And I finally got to see Joni after a 17 year wait. Now if she'd just get back to her guitar playing (1/3 of what I love about her) I'd be most pleased. BTW, I was wondering. What if she did an album and tour of covers and her own material in which she NEVER sings...only plays? Perhaps employing other singers or none at all. I wonder how that would be? I think I'd like that too. Oh yeah, the outfits. For God's sake, lose those Mary Travers capes, please. I realize they are a stage prop but they are sooooo unbecoming and make you look...well...see my BSN parody, if Les ever adds it to the JMDL site. Along with the CD was a handwritten note telling him that his story found its way to the internet and that none other than David Crosby replied "not true...she was never there and I was only there for the weekend." I asked if perhaps he had confused Joni with Joan Baez...trying to give him an out, if need be. I haven't heard back, yet, but if he adds anything further to the story I'll be sure to post it here. The effort was chiefly Howard's, with help from some other JMDLers (myself included). The project took months, with many of the more ambiguous words discussed at length here on the list. The corrections were sent to Wally, but he wasn't able to get them to the publisher's in time for the second edition's deadline (he missed it by a day, and was very upset). I don't know whether or not Jim has this file, but if so perhaps the corrected and definitive lyrics could be posted on both sites. I hope that ultimately another edition will be printed and that the corrections will be incorporated, but unfortunately there seem to be plenty of books still stockpiled, and it may be a while before new original lyrics need to be included (as did the TTT lyrics for the soft cover edition). I've read somewhere else that this was played by Jaco on the bass, but to be honest, it sounds so much like a little 3-part brass section, I can't imagine how you would get that sound on the bass. The attack and sustain on some of the chords is *very* brass like, and rather un-bass like ... especially on the higher chords at the end of the brass/bass bit. I'd bet money that someone played trombone on that track! I tried to find it when I visited Matala last year, but couldn't. We were looking for both the english and Greek words for "Mermaid", but didn't see anything. Maybe it was taken over and renamed? It was great to see Matala and the caves, and imagine Joni and friends living there in the early 70s, but apart from that, the place is a bit of a tourist nightmare! There are loads of other places on Crete that are absolutely gorgeous though - amazing countryside, beaches, mountains, gorges, old towns and villages ... Howard W P.S The weird thing was, the whole time we were on Crete, we didn't see the moon once! When we were at matala, we though it would be nice to see the "Matala moon", but even though it was a clear night, the moon was nowhere to be seen! ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 6 Jun 2000 17:20:24 -0700 From: "James L. It also contains a nifty "quick reference" career chronology. In the short time I've been a member of the JMDL, I don't recall having seen anyone mention it. I thought some listers might be unaware of its existence, so I wanted to let you all know it's out there. Has anyone read it? Any comments? It was me that compiled all the errors from the lyrics book. And yes, there were quite a large number of them. After spending all that time listening to each and every Joni song to check the lyrics book (as well as getting help from others who sent in the errors they found) I realised that there was NO definitive source of correct Joni lyrics. The lyrics book had errors, as did the CD inserts (and the songbooks)! Unfortunately, despite the work that went into them, the corrections did not get included in the 2nd edition of the lyrics book. However, there *is* now a definitive source of correct Joni lyrics: www.jonimitchell.com Wally sent me all the lyric pages, and I went through them to add in all the corrections from the book, so the lyrics at JM.com are the ones to use as a reference. Sadly, there were a lot of sloppy errors in the Lyrics book, e.g missed lines: "And you were in the parking lot Subterranean by your own design The virtue of your style inscribed Jesus was a beggar, he was rich in grace" Oops.
