In NO order whatsoever: Michael Paz - what more needs to be said? Nothing else from me, fer sure! Jerry - One of those guys who instantly makes me laugh, I hit it off with him right from the get go when I met him at the luggage carousel. Transitions instantly from serious conversation to totally off-the-wall silliness. My kind of guy, and a true party monster! Jimmy - Along with his partner Ed, Jimmy was exactly like I imagined him to be, his obvious warmth exuding from every pore. Wears a perpetual smile. Gave me two enlarged photos from the FL show that I'll always treasure. And even if he couldn't pull off the triple salchow physically, he could sell it and get full score! Steve - Certainly one of the people I was most excited to meet, Steve & I communicate almost daily and have traded a lot. His CD graphics are tremendous, award -winning creations. And his voice is so packed with emotion it fills you up. So nice to hear Two Grey Rooms, Man from Mars, not only sung to perfection but played with full heart and soul. And his partner Jon threw himself into the fray as well and hung right in there with us. Thanks for making it Steve, I know it was a helluva drive from Cheese country! Leslie/Steve - Again, another JMDL'er I was anxious to meet, as she has been such an active supporter of the covers project and was our eyes and ears in Wally's final times. Actually had the thrill of watching her snag yet another BSN cover (Robert Goulet), and Steve is an incredible musician! One can barely keep up with trying to watch his fingers moving all over his mandolin. Marcel - Firstly, his wife was a real trooper, she was not feeling well most of the time but hung in there and ran the gamut of activities. Marcel's voice is impeccable, his laugh is infectious, and I was glad to finally attach a face to the name. Like his posts, he is brutally honest, and is a real straight shooter. I'll forever remember his expressions during the Howlin' Wolf show saying "This is OFF THE CHARTS!" Phyliss - Yet another JMDLer I couldn't wait to meet. We got to spend some time strolling around NO, and had beignets (little square doughnuts) and java at the Cafe du Monde. And watching her video of the Greek show was SOOO cool! Michael had a big screen, so it was like watching a Joni movie! You've had quite a Joni month, Phyliss, and I hope our paths get to cross again. Kakki - The best loved and most repected member of this group, and rightfully so. She has a charisma that is extremely rare, her love for all things Joni is so real it's impossible not to love it all right along with her. And thanks to her, I now have an official "SLUT" washcloth - LOL! It now has a prominent place on the cover of my Joni scrapbook. Unfortunately, she is also charismatic to mosquitoes (Ashara's) and chiggers, like me. I got my feet and ankles chewed up in Paz's backyard Saturday night, but poor Kakki had a couple mini-volcanos on her ankles! She had to be taken to the hospital Sunday afternoon for some medicine, and believe me, all we thought about in her absence was her swift healing and return. Kakki, surely you know how much you're appreciated by all of us! Well, I'll continue this later, and then there's still the Howlin' Wolf to talk about!! Blue is also my favorite having played through my original vinyl version to a virtual hiss. I guess I have a favorite era as I imagine many Joniphiles do. I turned onto Blue at it's original release, I went back for Ladies of the Canyon and then forward with FTR, C&S and HOSL. That list is where my soul lies, was discovered, developed - created! I like to think of Joni as my spiritual mother nurturing me with her mind beauty. The last 4 years have been the time that I needed the Joni experience the most. But it was also the time I listened the least to music - period! (too emotional!) Although on the good days my dear departed and I would sing Joni to each other in the kitchen, as we prepared dinner or cleaned up. Robin's been gone almost 2 years, for the most part I get better everyday, but then every couple of months you feel like you're "Down to Zero" all over again! Unfortunately, it's been one of those times this week. But I still believe in us and know that my Robin was truly all of the "Ladies of the Canyon" rolled up into one. So this time 'round I made a concious effort to get some quality time with the Happy Dutchman, who is one of the finest and most fascinating men I've ever met. His knowledge of music is vast, and his collection is beyond belief, but he is so wonderful to spend time with, it doesn't even seem to pass. He's a big man, and he has to be to hold his oversized heart. He says he has the capability to be angry, but I have my doubts. We had an incredible lunch on Monday at Napoleon's, and talked on a variety of subjects. He has been EVERYWHERE. I cherished every moment I had with him, and the damndest thing is, that I still wish for more time! One word of advice though John...when in New Orleans in the summer, no need to pack those long sleeve wool clothes! :~) PS, I know I still owe you my list, I've not forgotten, just haven't done it yet... Bern - The mysterious Sicilian behind the sunglasses, I was delighted that Bern agreed to be my roomie - certainly made the stay more economical. Plus, he is chef extraordinaire and made me the best pecan treats. As good as they were I wanted to hoard but had to share them. Bern is a very deep thinker & conversationalist, the exact opposite of me. Now if we can only get some more posts out of him, the rest of you can learn what I know about Bern's insight and passion for Joni and life in general. Lori - (Major sigh) I must be maturing, because in my younger days I wouldn't have been able to speak to someone as charming & pretty as Lori without tripping over myself and acting like an idiot...well, the latter I still do fairly well...I had the privelege of making Lori some Tape Tree tapes long ago, and have counted her as a friend ever since, so it was a THRILL to get to meet her and her husband. Sad to think that the last image Lori has of *me* was after I had drug myself out of the hotel bed so she could give me a parting gift of the tasty and lethal Kirsch batons. Lori, the time passed much too quickly! Waaaah.... Bryan Thomas - So good to see you and Cindy again, and to meet Matt & Taylor, major assets to the new Bryan Thomas sound. (Y'all, Taylor is a dead ringer for a young Jimmy Page - he's a real nice guy). Loved to hear you again, and I was just teasing about you playing the same "tired" set, bro...BUT you owe me a Prince cover, man! :~) Although if I'd have heard your take on "I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man" I might have exploded from being overstimulated! Always a pleasure, lemme know when the BT Band starts that East Coast tour... Les - One of the highlights of the entire Fest was getting major hang time with this man! From the all-night sing to our shared glances of amazement at the Howlin' Wolf show, Les was exuding joy from every pore, and when the Webmaster's happy, everybody's happy! We had some great conversations on trading, tape and CD trading, and I probably talked too open and free, but that's just the way I am...Les, the JMDL website is the GREATEST! You get major props, and I know you're proud for being the catalyst for so much positive Jonivibe in the world! David Lahm - Astounding to think that he was a part of this fest, what with his musical heritage and all. A quiet guy, but brilliant, both in conversation and especially sitting behind the piano. I still was unable to talk him into my tentative titles for his follow-up Joni record, nor was I able to find out even ONE tune he's gonna do. Oh well, like he said, "Don't you like surprises?", so I guess I have to wait. An amazing to this list and to the fest. Jim - Poor Jim was so busy being the JMDL reporter, photgrapher, and videographer for the ENTIRE weekend, it seemed like he didn't have much time to cut loose. So it was great Saturday night to have him join in with the "NJC Choir" - he may not know all the words, but he can sure tear up a chorus! Thanks for all your efforts on behalf of those who will enjoy the photos and reporting, Jim! Jack Nielson - Not a lister, but I've gotta mention him. He was our driver and fellow partier for the Fest. He also is EXTREMELY talented and gave a heartfelt performance of "Blue Boy" and "Midway" at the Howlin' Wolf. He is Paz-like in the fact that he is so easy to feel an instant kinship to. You probably won't see this, Jack, but maybe Michael can pass on how much we appreciate your HARD work, and that I hope all goes well with you in your new life transitions. Pearl & Steve - Like old friends by now, I met Pearl first in Atlanta for the '98 show, then again at Ashara's, then we had the pleasure of a visit from them to our home, now another Fest! Pearl is probably one of the premiere Joni collectors in the crowd, and Steve, although not a JMDL'er, is JUST as big a fan of Joni and music in general. Very warm and stimulating conversationalists, I'm already looking forward to seeing them again. Victor & Holley - Victor is a true free spirit. Multi-talented, he is just as likely to pull out a flute or a cello as he is a guitar. I kept waiting for his next surprise...a tuba in his back pocket, an accordian behind his ear...just call him "Mr. Uninhibited", he loves to play anything for anyone at anytime. It was great seeing him & Holley again and glad they could be a part of the event. Catgirl & Eric - Last but certainly not least, as always a pleasure to have around. Eric, as already stated, blew me away with his talent, both singing & playing. And where there's a Joni sinalong, there's Catgirl the supermodel! :~) Claude – A beautiful person with a beautiful voice! And she gives those great hugs where she just melts on you like cheese on a grilled burger – Wow! She nailed “Conversation” at the Howlin’ Wolf, and bless her heart tried to run on no sleep but eventually had to crash at the Hotel. She is truly an angel on Earth, and is switching from Digest to List! Yay! OK, now tell me who I missed so I can beat myself up! There's a radio ad for Service Merchandise (a national discount retail chain) that's playing here in Tampa right now (a *lot*). The jingle is absolutely dreadful. It sounds like a lame attempt at an upbeat 10,000 Maniacs song (maybe "Like The Weather" would be a reasonable comparison, feel-wise) and the singer sounds *exactly* like Natalie Merchant, even down to that strange accent she has. Does anyone know if it really *is* her? If not, she should sue them like Tom Waits did some time ago, when a vocal impressionist impersonated him on an ad. Volume one. >Top Ten Notable Joni Moments on Record >9) On BSN - the "oh Canada" on ACOY. Oh, I hate this "Oh Canada"--it goes through me like a knife every time I hear it (when I was listening to her the other night in Chicago, I was wishing when she started singing ACOY, that she would do the original "Oh Canada" from Blue.) The original is much more imbued with all sorts of layers. But I will tell you what does go through me, makes me all shivery, in a good way: The opening of Coyote--it always makes me crazy. The very beginning of "Love" on WTRF--"Although, I speak in . . . tongues of men and angels" ay caramba and then, the very end of "Love" when she does the last three "loves", especially the last one. exquisite in "Same Situation", the line "Send me somebody who's strong and somewhat sincere" in "Dreamland", "Propped up on a samba beat, with Dreamland comin on" and Chaka Khan's background Dreamland's (oh my god, I think I might actually get ten and I haven't even thought about it.) in "Edith and the K": "tthe wires in the walls are huuuuumming some song, some mysterious song " in "Down to you", the whole line that begins with "you go down to the pickup station craving warmth and beauty. . . . (all the way through to) In the morning there are lovers in the streets." which rivals in "Coyote" the part that starts "privately probing their public rooms, peeking through keyholes in numbered doors, where the players lick their wounds and take their temporary lovers and their pills and powders to get them through this passion play--no regrets, Coyote, I just get up a ways." Fucking brilliance. And it kills me everytime. The opening chords of Turbulent Indigo. in "Man from Mars": "I call and call. The silence is so full of sounds You're in them all, I hear you in the water, And the wiring in the walls" heartbreaking. these are not in any semblance of an order. Mind you, I found the arm wrap thing endearing. But someone referred to it as a bat cape. It wasn't making it. Then, in the second half, she had on black dress that had these very odd points around her calves. I mean, the dress was constructed to stick out at her knees, as if it were a kind of flat hoop skirt: it stuck out at the sides but not the front. It was odd. My friend said to me when we got a full on shot of it "In keeping with the Batman theme". It may have been Issey Miyake but I know it was a Messy Miyake. And one more thing, the Larry Klein thing. Enough already. As my friend said, she's been divorcing him for five years now. She always introduces him as her ex and, frankly, there are so many men whom she could call her ex, yes? Joni's performance at Merriweather, which I enjoyed from 8th row, right center (which is more like 23rd row due to the orchestra pit, but it was still a great seat), was nothing short of SUPERB! Joni was radiant, beautifully dressed (okay, the second outfit was one of those that wouldn't appeal to everyone, but I'm not the fashion police. I liked it, and as far as I'm concerned, Joni can do little wrong), and she was in fine voice. She was in great humor, too, weaving a story as she performed the songs from BSN, then telling little anecdotes and joking with the audience between the "rest" of the songs. The orchestra was brilliant, and the players looked as if they were having a blast. There was absolutely nothing to dislike about the performance! (Joni didn't even smoke on stage until the very last song, although I suspect she did some puffing away during Intermission ... does anyone know if she's taken to wearing The Patch?) I heard mutterings from a few people on the way out about how they wished Joni would've performed more songs from her older albums, but you have to expect that some people haven't been following Joni's career and are stuck somewhere around LOTC or Blue or C&S and don't really know what Joni's been doing recently. I suspect that's the case with the woman at Wolf Trap. Lori in DC P.S. to Brian Gross: Sorry, Bri, I can't make it to Philly tomorrow night, but I'll be thinking of you! I dropped off (un.sub.scribed) a couple of weeks later because there was just too much to read. But since I knew the tour was on (silly me, who lives but 8 miles from the Oakdale in CT, I went to Maine for the holiday weekend, which WAS the right choice--me mum is having heart trouble) I thought I would check in and live vicariously through your reports. I have not been disappointed. I just wanted to say thanks for those who posted published reviews and to the writers who have so prolifically posted their own detailed reports. I loved the Hejira anonymous thread. I have recently bought, w/ a leftover Amazon gift certificate, Clouds and Song to a Seagull, previously not in my possession. (I came in on Blue and went through Hejira.) So, I have been listening to the aforementioned CDs and vinyl HOSL and Hejira while reading the volumes on the jmdl digest. Now, going back into lurking mode. Thanks for the thrills. Leonard" Subject: A Letter From Judy Collins I wrote a letter to Judy Collins yesterday, which I'd be happy to forward to the list if there is sufficient interest. What I had to say to Judy is not what's important, however. Judy wrote me a wonderfully heartfelt and candid letter in return, which I received today. I then asked Judy for her permission to share the letter with the JMDL, and she has graciously answered by saying "Dear Jim, it would be my pleasure. My feelings are totally open to anyone who asks. Even Joni. Ever your singer of Joni's songs and my own, and others who fill the world with beauty, I remain, Judy." Below is Judy's letter. (Thank you, Judy.) My husband is a songwriter who's #1 influence is Dylan, and I am a songwriter whose #1 influence is Joni. We knew each other for several years as songwriters first before dating- one of our first dates was the Dylan, Joni, Van Morrison tour. So he got to hear her live, knowing very little of her catalog until then. What a great concert for both of us. Just a little background, Anyway... I may have told this story before, but it bares repeating because to me it shows just how amazingly emotional Joni's music can be to those who have no specific ties to her music. I asked my husband to watch the Tribute Concert with me, and like many of you, I became really choked up from the very first minute. Somewhere along the way, as I was trying to let the tears come out silently & covertly, sort or embarrased that I was getting so emotional, I looked over at my husband who to my IMMENSE surprise, also had great big tears in his eyes. This is a guy who doesn't normally go for female singers, he's more the Dylan, Prine, Hiatt kind of guy. WOW. It still astounds me, this ability Joni has, whether she is singing her songs or someone else is, to evoke the deepest most central core part of our beings. It is a magical thing. And somewhat related to those Hejira posts- I have been learning to play Amelia (thanks to the Joni website chord section!)which has always been one of my very favorite songs. Everytime I come to line "Like Iccarus Ascending" I get completely welled up & can hardly get the words out! I don't dare play it in public until I can keep it more together! Because of the inherent problems of trying to find the right person online at the time that you're looking for a song, it seems that it is not the most viable solution. My suggestion is to use i-drive. Anyone can upload files of all types and anyone else can download. Myplay offers a similar service except you can only put up mp3's. Myplay also offers instant listening which is a nice feature for those who don't want to download. Different accounts could be set up for the various trees or for photos, video clips, etc. perhaps using myplay for music and i-drive for other things. The password could be the same for all accounts so there won't have to be various names to note and remember. I opened an account at i-drive: https://www.idrive.com/ Username: jmdl-files Password: hejira and at myplay: http://www.myplay.com/ E-mail address: jmdl-files@mail.com Password: hejira I uploaded McAlmont's "Conversation" to the accounts. Anyone can use the username and password to go in and download or stream (myplay). The disadvantages are download time and only one person can log in at a time. The way to get around that is for those interested to set up I-drives and then the files can be published to "friends" only, so any JMDL'ers who give you there user name can see the files you designate to share with friends. In either case, I think this is a much better solution than Napster, Gnutella or any peer-to-peer sharing software. I think it's a nice addition to the offline process used now for those who want to use it. Thoughts? I've been hanging out here on the JMDL since 1902. (Well, it *has* been quite a number of years; I'm not sure how long, really.) As some folks may recall, I've danced around with a number of health problems and draw disability payments as a former federal employee (nonbureaucratic flavor). I was able to see Joni at Merriweather Post because I snagged two tickets from a contest on WAMU, one of the best public radio stations in the universe. I've had breast cancer twice, most recently just last year. Because I pretty much had to take some time away from the world of work to tend to my body, I haven't worked in several years. What I was when I was working was a fairly good (if I do say so myself) writer and editor. In case anyone cares <:D>, I drafted and edited my agency's Annual Report to Congress for several years. This is a Big Deal in some circles ( you might want to be glad that you don't travel in those circles). After taking the time to paste myself together again (as it were), I'm doing a bit better now. I've been trying to find writing or editing work that I might be able to do here at home, but so far I've not had much luck. So I'm throwing myself at the mercy of my friends, including my friends on the JMDL. If you have any leads on writing or editing assignments, please let me know. If you're with an organization that might be interested, please let me know. I have a resume that I'm more than willing to fling your way off-list. BTW, the terms of my disability payments are such that I can supplement the payments with work. Legally, even. :) So I'm not seeking payment under-the-table or trying to involve anyone in anything that's compromising. (Unless, of course, the right compromising lesbian comes along, in which case any noncompromising promises on my part become inoperative. And silly.) Again, please excuse the intrusion. (If you want to suggest that I add this post to the string on commercials from hell, that's OK too.)
