As it was, it was sung at the tribute by Colvin and Carpenter, whom had another opportunity to shine - on "Amelia." Judy easily could have been featured on the tribute without needing to perform "Both Sides Now." >> No, she could NOT have sung "Chelsea Morning," partly for the same reason she could not sing "Both Sides Now" at the tribute concert, plus the fact that Hillary and Bill and much of the rest of the musically ignorant public ALREADY thought "Chelsea Morning" was Judy's song and not Joni's. Allowing Judy to sing either of those sings would have perpetuated that myth. Furthermore, it seems that the theme of the tribute concert was to show how Joni and her songs influenced the NEXT generation of singer/songwriters, not to rehash the success of people who already had helped introduce or covered Joni's songs. Paul I ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 31 May 2000 23:16:37 EDT From: SCJoniGuy@aol.com Subject: NJC: N.O., the gatherings OK, there was the aforementioned Giovanni's restaurant with the customized meal. Lots of wine consumed, not a Boone's Farm bottle in sight! From there we wandered over to the House of Blues, where Michael, the King of NO, had reserved a spot for us in the private room upstairs. It was pretty funky. I noticed right off Trent Reznor and the rest of NIN right there in the middle of the room chatting, but didn't approach him, after all, what was I going to say..."Mr. Reznor, your stuff is really awful, do you ever intend on making any GOOD records?" I don't think so. We did meander around, admiring the...ahem...artwork on the walls on the way to the "Prayer Room". Now I don't think a lot of praying actually goes on there, and if that is your intention, all those Kama Sutra pics on the walls will get your mood changed pronto! Saturday was the party at Paz's, after the rehearsal. I did some shopping with Pearl & Steve & Phyliss & Bern, and Phyliss, Bern & I had lunch in the French Quarter. We had our own private Joni thread going, talking mostly about CMIARS, believe it or not! What a thrill to be able to talk about Joni in real time, with fellow fans, with no eyes rolling or anything - wonderful! Then it was over to Michael's for the party, featuring LOTS of crawfish! Now, Michael showed us how to properly eat these litle guys, and the phrase "sucking the head" was pretty much the catch phrase for the night... Of course, Jonifests mean MUSIC, and there was lots of it - we listened to lots of Joni, of course, some people inside were jamming and playing Joni songs, but the NJC outside was the highlight for me!!! Once again, Eric pulled out the guitar, and let me tell you this guy cannot be stumped! Did I ever think I'd be able to enjoy a singalong of Steely Dan's "Any Major Dude"? Or Chicago tunes, or "Tangled Up in Blue", or "Hit the Road Jack" (What you SAYYY?!?) I started "writing" some verses, some spontaneoues parodying if you will, and that was a lot of fun. I talked to Marian, and that only reminded me of how much I missed her, along with Jody, Mark, Patrick, Brian, and the list goes on and on. And Les was tearing it up - we were having a contest to see who could cut loose the most, and it ended in a dead heat, I think! Everyone was in the spirit of the thing, and with Ed continually making Cosmopolitans and the coolers staying full of cold beers, the party went on and on and on. By four or some ungodly hour I was cruising home with Les, Jimmy, and Laura (a new lister I hope - you out there yet, Laura?) And some of the crowd was just getting warmed up for the night's partying on Bourbon Street - I couldn't hang with them as I am only an amateur... More to follow, but maybe not tonight, I'm wearing down fast! Bob Anway, God that was fun - more than I've had in a long while ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 31 May 2000 23:22:51 -0700 From: "James L. Leonard" Subject: Re: joni dissed by judy collins? I disagree, Paul. What better way to set the record straight as to whose song "Chelsea Morning" is than to perform it in a program of Joni Mitchell songs? And, as far as the theme of the tribute being Joni's influence on the next generation of singer/songwriters, aren't James Taylor, Richard Thompson and Elton John her contemporaries...as are Judy Collins and Tom Rush? I saw no evidence of such a "theme." And Elton pretty much begged his way onto the show. (are they still around?) and others also, from later in her carreer. I really don't wish to offend any fans, but, at the risk of showing my considerable ignorance, (again) speaking of the 'tenuous-at- best connection to Joni', I have yet to figure out what about 80% of those people were doing there! pat - -- Boston Jim opined: >I just wanted to point out that Judy Collins could have sung "Chelsea Morning," another of Joni's songs she recorded very early on (even before Joni did). Judy easily could have been featured on the tribute without needing to perform "Both Sides Now." Judy also recorded "Michael From Mountains" in the early years (late '60s), and could have performed that. She might even have chosen a song she'd always admired, but had never recorded. I, for one, would have been very happy to see her, and Tom Rush, on the tribute. It would have made more sense to include them (people who were instrumental in helping Joni begin to reach a wide audience) than some of the others, many with a tenuous-at- best connection to Joni.> Angelfire for your free web-based e-mail. http://www.angelfire.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 31 May 2000 20:50:35 -0700 From: "P.
