As far as i am aware this was actually from Judy herself. if it is a hoax, it was a good one. For obvious reasons, i don't intend giving out details as I am sure Judy will not want loads of email as a result. i had my doubts if the mail i read was from her. In the event of what we consider blatant plagarism of our sites, webrings, mailing list and related ideas and services, we will now take legal action against you under Section 42 of the Public and Media User Copyright Act. You have been warned. Anyone on the internet is traceable. This is a serious threat and the owner of this site and this mailing list will not hesitate to begin legal proceedings. From The Management Team ************ i feel this ILN is a scare tactic.....because, even though i am not a lawyer, it is perfectly okay to say "i don't like this website" in a public forum, just as much as you can say, "i like this website" in a public forum. as long as one doesn't mention their mailing list or their names, well i just want to know the valitity of their 'important legal notice'? and i still find it ?-able that you can't mention them in public forums (you can certainly say negative things WITHOUT being slanderous.) without them threatening legal action. According to van-halen.com (http://www.van-halen.com), the 45-year-old musician visited the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston as an outpatient last Thursday. "According to M.D. Anderson doctors, Eddie is planning to begin an outpatient clinical trial to prevent cancer," the site said. "No further information is being released at this time." Another Web site, the Van Halen News Desk (http://www.vhnd.com), which has close links with the group, said Van Halen was being treated for cancer of the tongue. Van Halen, who is married to actress Valerie Bertinelli, is a heavy smoker and a recovering alcoholic. Representatives from the band and its Warner Bros. Records label were not available for comment Monday. Dutch-born Edward Van Halen co-founded Van Halen in 1974 with older brother Alex on drums, bass player Michael Anthony and singer David Lee Roth. The group's 1978 self-titled debut album sold more than 10 million copies in the United States. With subsequent hit songs like "Jump," "Why Can't This Be Love" and "Right Now," the band remains a vibrant musical force. I have sensed, from the very beginning of this nonsense, a desperate attempt by the "mis-interpreter" of said joke to garner attention for himself (why?) and to make the list "about" him, rather than "about" Joni, *her* art, and related topics. As a newbie, I had previously thought pretty highly of this person's posts and his commitment to the JMDL community. I even enjoyed his well-intentioned, if slightly mis-worded, "Lady Of Duality" post that triggered the original argument (thone about education and intellectual snobbery). I even joined with others in posting a "call for peace" in the early-going of this "war," because I thought I was writing to a rational person. Then the "fascist" comment proved me wrong, sadly. His threat of today to return to this boring battle with both guns blazing ("as soon as time permits") has convinced me that what this is all about is a spoiled child's need to be the center of attention. "a case of you" - the familiar dulcimer strains changed to ethereal strings, a mournful clarinet, and swirling brushes on a drum - fit into the romance cycle roughly midway throught the disillusionment phase when, as mitchell put it: "tender entreaties have failed and it's time to head for the bar." "both sides now", the sage, bittersweet finish to the song cycle, was a revelation: a timeless meditation that's as true and telling today as it was 31 years ago. but the real beauty was in how the song - like mitchell, like the rest of us - has grown up, textured now with haunting new harmonies and rich, complex swells. mitchell's "good friend and ex husband" larry klein, also her producer and musical director, came out to play stunning bass parts during the encore numbers: a playful "be cool", which will be on the upcoming follow up to both sides now, imperially moody reworkings of "judgement of the moon and stars", and "for the roses", both indictments of the music business - a densely layered read on "hejira" and finally, marvin gayes own industry kiss off, "trouble man". fans were understandably thrilled to hear the older songs. but it was equally thrilling to realize - witnessing the transliteration of mitchell's songs from the simple alphabet of a gentle lullabye to the dazzling language of a symphony - how magnificent these songs always were, and how gifted a musician mitchell continues to be. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 30 May 2000 19:26:12 -0300 From: "Wally Kairuz" Subject: RE: Just wanted to share this.....NJC but oh howard!!! i have practically proposed to you and you never saw fit even to refuse me! i am less than zero on this list... wallyk > *** > I wish I had a husband to trip over her, or me, or anything, for that > matter, before falling into my arms. > > No false alarms, please. > > Howard M > > ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 30 May 2000 19:44:37 -0300 From: "Wally Kairuz" Subject: RE: hi and welcome willy! i have always envied all the willies in the world because they could be joni's child and her father too!!! Why is a man who's claimed he can have Tantric sex for upwards of five hours only setting aside 60 minutes for a chess match? Perhaps because his opponent, Kasparov, who is the author of four books and a vocal spokesman for Eastern European political and social concerns, is widely believed to be the strongest player in the history of the game. The setting for this battle of wits is the Times Square studios of Good Morning America. The game will be projected on the giant video display monitors on top of the studios as it unfolds and will be broadcast live through Kasparov's Web site (www.kasparovchess.com). ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 30 May 2000 19:08:39 EDT From: MDESTE1@aol.com Subject: Marcels trailer: Journey to New Orleans JoniFest! [1] Im going to send this now just because I just got home form the airport and Im a gamey toad from the flights. So I havent even showered because part of the wedding vows is that the Woman always gets to use the shower and the warm towells first. So I had a little time and though I would report back a preliminary overview to get some things out of the way so as to allow for greater in depth reporting of what amounted to the night of a lifetime in the Joni Tribute Concert. I want to spend considerable time on that because it was so over the top incredible that I want to RESEARCH what I saw and heard. The depth of what happened that night deserves the revelation of the backgrounds of some of the people who played after which you will all realize how lucky we all were to be there. Michael Paz the host (err...which is why its been called Pazfest now for months) put on a three day production that it will be very hard for anyone to top in the future. It was bigger than the City of Los Angeles Millenium Celebration (rimshot). (inside joke). The only thing I can say to describe it now, is that in all my life, and having gone to hundreds of professional performances going all the way back to the mid-60s, I would probably have to place this night in the all time top 10 of great great nights in my entire life. It was preposterous and we were all pinching ourselves. In fact Im going to go out on a limb and say that this was one of those once in a lifetime things that you should have absolutely gone DEEEEEP into hock to find a way to have been there. If it choked you financially practically to death you would be HAPPY back at home eating your macaroni and cheese for the next month with the BIGGEST smile on your face knowing that you were there. I would go even farther and say this was better than seeing Joni herself. I know I know Marcels full of beans again....but I mean it. Maybe not seeing Joni for the first time in your life but beyond that yes because this was a far better ......... no... this was ten times better than the big time TNN TV tribute to Jonis music. It even had an answer to KD Langs duds. This show absolutely showcased about every phase Joni has gone through in songwriting and it did it in incredible depth played by amazing musicians. The old folk tunes had phenomenal renditions, the Hejira, and For the Roses phases freaks had a big helping of their style preference,...and Jonis Jazz phase with Hissing of Summer Lawns material went off the richter scale and blew the doors off the building. Virtually every album had several songs contributed. Songs that I absolutely do not and have never liked that much had me howling with the pure pleasure of listening to this great stuff. So I want to work on the Joni Tribute Night in detail report before I post it. Now having said that I also need to say that the entire event which spans three to four days needs to be described as well so I think I need to break it into two separate posts. I had heard about these fests and even got the video from the first two at Julie Webbs house in Pittsburgh and at Asharas in Toppsfield. I found the one I finally got to everything good that I had read in the past reviews. This time we were lucky and we had this incredible person in Paz who has the abilities and connections necessary to produce a night like this was at the Howlin Wolf. If you have ever seen the movie The Coneheads ??? Remember the fireworks demonstration at the homecoming game at haltime that Dan Akroyd did. Thats what Paz did to/for us. However we also had a less spectacular (obviously) but equally interesting and musically fun two nights at Mikes house and at the gourmet restaraunt, and the day after. New Orleans and the surrounding area itself is a big time place and it knows it. Its totally different in many good ways. Thanks to Mikes great buddy Jack we were able to have somewhat of a guide and limo service that made it all go smoothly. WE can never thank Mike enough for making this trip what it was. Yes, he makes some mistakes, but not so many, and he's obviously a fan. You have to throw away some of the silly asides he says, but it's a compelling read - very thorough, he reviews EVERY song on each album which I think is cool... Plus he lists a pretty good COVERS discography in the back! ;-) Bob NP: Elvis, "Love Me Tender" ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 30 May 2000 23:24:13 -0500 From: "Michael Bird" Subject: ACOY revelations At the risk of going off on a tangent, a new thread, would anyone out there be willing to educate me on some of the musical intricacies occurring in "A Case of You" as arranged for BSN? How do Vince Mendoza & Co. seem sometimes to completely mask the fact that the song is in simple 4/4 time? Do the musicians or jazz-interpretation-enthusiasts among us have any answers to this mystery? How the heck did they do it? I think it's that I'm overwhelmed by how this arrangement seems to be an improvement over the original, which was already such a stunning composition long ago, simply stated, simply played. It's been echoed in the list over and over again, but I think I'm just catching on to the extraordinary richness achieved by the renewals of ACOY and BSN. It's a sign of a rich, fertile spirit. It took back-to-back playings of ACOY to serve up this little epiphany. One last thing and then I'll go away: the phrasing she uses on the words, "on the back" ( ... of a cartoon coaster) in the newer BSN get me every time, they play in my head as I fall asleep at night, in my dweems, first thing in the morning . . . Nickel Chief, feeling humbled. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 30 May 2000 23:29:14 EDT From: AsharaJM@aol.com Subject: WHAT A WEEKEND!!! (on the long side) Where do I begin? Picked up Jacky from England through crazy Boston traffic on Friday night. Saturday morning, set out for Heather's house in CT. She is the most gracious hostess, and an immaculate housekeeper! (In my next life, I will be the same, I keep telling myself.) Off to a delicious dinner with Heather, Fred, Jacky, Jenny, Kenny, and Patrick, and then on to the Oakdale Theater. My first mission was to buy all the goodies I had promised people I would snag. I had a long list, and credit card in hand. One problem. One MAJOR problem. That night, there was a sign saying, "CASH ONLY!" Seems there was no phone line into that area, and they did not have the means to do cards. On top of this, the ATM machine had also broken down. I had only brought about $60 in cash, hardly a dent in the mission I had taken on. I had wanted to take care of all this Saturday night, as I would be busy taking photographs on Sunday. So.....a woman's got to do what a woman's got to do. I begged. I pleaded. I cajoled everyone within 10 feet of me for money. I gathered all the cash I could from nearby JMDLers. Patrick had to forcibly hold me back from approaching complete strangers, so intent on my mission was I. I did run into one of the teachers from my son's school, and after a quick hug, needled $50 out of her and her date and moved on to my next victim. I finally got settled into my seat, 2nd row, dead center. Heather, I can never thank you enough for getting these seats. It was the joy of a lifetime! I swear, she had eye contact with all of us sitting there. Joni is having a ball with this gig, and it showed in every second of this show. She was smiling, moving, happy!!! Her voice was wonderful. Some highlights for me: Be Cool: was never a favorite of mine, but I had a new appreciation for it after hearing it live, and in its new form. When she sang "Don't whiiiiiiine," she pinched her nose so it was high and nasally. Too cute! A Case of You: Cried hysterically throughout the whole thing. Thankfully, Patrick's supportive arm was around my shoulder, and Jenny's supportive hand was holding mine. I just completely fell apart. (What can I say? I wear my heart on my sleeve!) I especially loved how she spat out "Oh, Canada!" It just brought the whole poignancy right to the very surface. I Wish I Were In Love Again: when she sang, "The faint aroma of performing seals" she put her hand up to her nose. Ludwig's Tune: Floored me. Absolutely floored me. I love this arrangement!! Leaving the Oakdale, a few hours sleep, and then back to Boston for a quick shower and change, and on to dinner with JMDLers, Maggie, Chuck E., DJ, Joe, Robbert, Jacky, and assorted significant others and friends. I had to wolf (that lives in Lindsay?) down my food so I could get to the venue early, as I was the concert photographer that evening for jonimitchell.com. (A million thank you's to Jim for the opportunity!) The Boston show was every bit as wonderful as CT, although a bit different in parts. The venue was very different, as Boston was an outside venue, and the crowd was a bit more rowdy. Nothing, but nothing could spoil this show. Not even the (ahem) choice of attire that Joni wore. Back to the Seaport Hotel where the die-hards met up again for after concert conversation, including Simon, Roberto, and Ric. At one point, I felt a what only can be described as a vice grip on my arm, and Maggie was leading me into the very crowded bar. There was Larry Klein. Now, I am a very outgoing person, and will talk to anyone, but I am very uncomfortable approaching celebrities and getting autographs. But, what can I say? I was caught up in the moment, and asked for an autograph or two. Finally, at 3 AM I snuggled into bed for a few hours sleep before going off on Monday to show Jacky as much of New England as possible before her evening flight. First, off to the Photo store to one-hour develop the prints from Sunday night. I was sweating absolute bullets, because my camera jammed, and I wasn't sure I had gotten anything at all. The minute we walked into the store, the guy behind the counter said, "How was the Joni concert last night?" Now, those that know me well know I am a firm believer in ESP, intuition, psychic knowledge and all that, but I had never even met this guy before, and he was just holding a roll of film that he had no idea of what was on it! I couldn't even answer him. All I could do is stand there with my jaw to the ground, wondering how the hell he knew that!! Jacky, after she was done rolling on the floor with laughter, just looked at me with tears of laughter, and said "Your shirt!" Of course, I was wearing my JMDL denim shirt. (DUH!) Jacky will probably never let me live that one down as Patrick will never let me live the "panhandling" down. LOL!!! To make a long story even longer, the pictures came out fine, we had a wonderful time by the ocean in Newburyport, Jacky got to her plane in time, and it was one of the most enjoyable weekends I've ever had. Thanks to all who made it possible! Hugs, Ashara www.photon.net/lightnet ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 30 May 2000 23:37:03 EDT From: "Pat Post" Subject: RE: JMDL Digest V2000 #220 Valerie Hey Valerie, How did your Hubby get those second row seats? I got fifth row the second they went on sale. I am so excited to see HER tomorow night. The reviews and comments from this lively bunch has got me totally geeked. Pine Knob is the best place to see a concert that I have ever been. I have been so fortunate to see Joni there three times so far. I really want to get my camera in there in the worst way. Thanks, to everyone on this fabulous list for the spectacular build up to the concert. I know she will be exquisite. Take Care, and by the way I love 'Blue Boy' and 'Ethiopia', the intensity of her voice on these tunes is what I love about Joni. I have quite often skipped over 'Shades of Scarlet Conquering',on THOSL. The Lyrics are great. I think it's the melody that turns me off. Speaking of Pine Knob in Detroit, When the Miles of Aisles came out I swore the she took the cover of Pine Knob, but I could't find a credit anywhere. Does anyone have the difinitive info on this?
