Most of the time, as far as I'm aware, when someone refers to a person as a "kingpin", they're talking about Da Mob. This guy uses these women, gets them hooked on drugs, then dumps them when they start looking too old. ===== Catherine (in Toronto) catrin_of_aragon@yahoo.ca _______________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Diane Krall is performing two nights, the first of which is the same night as the exhibit opening and at approximately the same time (8pm). The second is the following Sunday. If my extreme budget travel plans work out and I can get there, I plan to spend most of Friday night at the Mendel soaking in as much Joni aura as I can. I'm imaging that the place will be very crowded because it's free, everyone is invited, it's not that large a venue, and people are coming from very far away. Like someone else who posted recently, I'd like to go back when the gallery is a little less crowded for a more intimate viewing of the works. The Jazz Fest program also mentions an "big announcement on new headliners" coming in May, specifically for Saturday, July 1. Is he a > pimp? Is he a mobster? > How about you, too, Mark? Any theories? > OK, so you didn't ask me, but don't let that stop me! I think of Edith and Harry's wife as being friends from way back when, school chums, hanging out with Joni, Gail and Louise, and Chicky, Ron and Leadfoot Melvin. Harry's wife (we don't know her name) ends up marrying into the middle-class (I would say more like upper middle class) American dream when she snags Harry. Edith hooks up with this supposedly glamourous Kingpin guy - I see him as a small-time mobster in the illicit drugs racket ("Small town, big man. Fresh lipstick glistening". They're both prisoners in a way - Edith to her drugs and her mobster; Harry's wife to Harry and his house and his take-home pay. (Harry is a prisoner too, of the boardroom, the lifestyle, the trophy wife and her incessant need for yet more material things; it's possible that the Kingpin is a bit of a prisoner to Edith as well - "Edith and the Kingpin, each with charm to sway, are staring eye to eye - they dare not look away" - they may be equals after all, or at least, Edith thinks she can stand up to him, but she could be mistaken). I see Edith and Mrs Harry as having been good-looking girls with lots of dreams of the good life and how to get into it, gold-diggers possibly, or maybe just dreamers who have bought into certain lifestyle aspirations but, having arrived at the spot they thought they'd like to be in, they find it isn't all it's cracked up to be. They are disappointed. Scarlett, another one of the old crowd, still imagining herself as a young woman, has had affair after affair with numerous men without ever finding the perfect one. She may perceive herself as Scarlett O'Hara, but she's more Blanche Dubois than Scarlett O'Hara. She may be another disappointed middle-aged woman with delusions of grandeur, but she doesn't give up - listen to the air of finality and purpose as Joni/Scarlett finishes this song, declaiming: "A woman must have everything". This woman is "cast iron and frail, with her impossibily gentle hands - and her blood red fingernails." You wouldn't want to tangle with her! ===== Catherine (in Toronto) catrin_of_aragon@yahoo.ca _______________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I was told by the management you can take photos throughout the first two songs. After that, I would be in trouble as big brother would be watching and would take my film. Talk about film noir! Not to mention it is annoying to people who've paid their money and someone's busy buzzing with cameras. Anyway, Ms. Mitchell would not move away from the mike. So, what I have taken and that will appear on Joni Mitchell.com are many shots of "she tapes her regrets to the microphone stand"..." you can't photograph the rock and roll band for very long". So even though there were many great shots that followed later I did not forfeit our film and stayed true to the agreement. Integrity over Artistry. Show & Tapes From: "Eric G. Postel \(hotmail - music\)" Date: Sat, 27 May 2000 12:23:37 -0500 Have been traveling back home and have not had time to post about the show until now. Not having heard any of the other shows on the tour, I can't say how the show at Post compared but it certainly was an engaging concert. While not sold out, there were a lot more people there than I expected. While one guy kept calling out for Richard, by and large the audience knew what they were in for and did not expect Joni of other periods. They were very respectful and yet very responsive after the songs. At least one time if not more, Joni held back more than she had planned in order to let the applause play out. I would guess she thought the audience was enthusiastic. The set list was either exactly the same or almost the same as the previous shows (I have not seen all the setlists). Joni seemed in a good mood and she was definitely concentrating. I was in the second row so I could see her expressions and movements very well. During instrumental solos she would step back, sometimes drink some water but usually seemed to be concentrating on the music and seemed coiled to spring back to the mike for her turn. For me, Case of You and Both Sides Now were the highlights of the BSN portion and not because they were Joni's songs or because I love them. Its just that the strings added incredible poignancy to the songs. Before Ludwig, Joni talked for almost five minutes about the music business and told a Beethoven story/joke. She started it by saying "henley's on the warpath ...." Having heard Billy Corgan make similar comments two weeks prior at a concert in Milwuakee, it has indeed been quite a period of speaking out about Brittany, Backstreet, etc. Anyways, the big surprise of the evening was Larry Klein's appearance which was not scheduled. They kissed on the lips when he came out and he said to her "beautiful, just beautiful" as he came out. He played on two songs. He faced her the entire time and the lift he gave her was visible. While not as good as the Gorge, the concert was, all in all, a fantastic night of music. My enjoyment was somewhat ruined by the audience members from hell -- two aging hippies who were drunk, perhaps stoned, constantly talked and who kept getting up and down. People all around them kept shushing them. At the intermission I tried to talk with them and they said they understood but continued in the second half. People all around me thanked me for trying - everybody was pissed off. The only reason why I held back at all is I know how much this sort of thing bothers Joni and she sure as heck could see the second row. I was afraid (correctly as it turned out in the second half) that any additional comments to Hugh and Laura would have caused a scene. So for the sake of the other 10,000 people there I did not risk unsettling Joni but wow, what a pain. For those on the list further back like Julian, Hugh was the guy who went up and gave Joni a tie-dyed shirt at one point. The relevance of this to the members of the list is that the tapes did not come out so well. All told, three of us taped. Nonetheless, I will do a bit of splicing and will get the best possible tape out folks in a couple of weeks. Have a nice weekend. For me its a Memorial to Joni weekend! I have been on several lists, music & othewise over the years & this is by far the most interesting in terms of covering a broad number of life topics & also the most warm hearted. I am relatively new to this list but I have never ever perceived any us vs. them separatism here. And here is my pop psychology self help 2 cents addition: we all have those sensitive emotional buttons that get activated at times, usually through careless rather than intentionally hurtful remarks. It can be very cleansing & freeing to look inside to acknowledge what that vulnerable part is and how it came to be so. So much of what we hear is colored by things that have hurt us in our past. Date: Sat, 27 May 2000 22:49:50 -0700 From: "David P. Swanson" Hello Group, I am envious of those members of our outer universe. Joni's concert at Merriweather is now heading out into the vast reaches of space and some of the universe's creatures will be hearing it as it passes their homes. I so enjoyed the concert and meeting Lori and Mary. Now I wished I could have met Catgirl but it was not to be. Like others, I was enthralled from the first appearace of the "Canadian Angel" as she walked to the microphone. Since I was 35 rows back, I was glad to have the large screens available so I could see Joni up close. It was a beautiful night, as well, cool with a slight breeze wafting through the seated crowd. I enjoyed it all, as I said, but I really liked the second set the best. It seemed that Joni really came alive when singing her own material. I did wonder though - someone said in an earlier note that the programs were thick and full of material - these programs were just that - one page programs... Hell, I intend to frame mine anyway - along with my ticket stub. I hope she comes back to the area soon. I started on digest but just found it too hard to keep track of who and when people have said various things. The real-time mail is much better for that, and I also think it makes replying much easier. The only downside is when you don't get to download your mail for a while and 300-400 messages mount up in the in-box! It can also be a problem if your connection is paid for by the hour, etc. It can take a while to download sometimes. But I'd never go back! And Kate said: >My HUGE aplogies for my previous post where I forgot to delete the entire >digest following my message. Another reason why I'm on real-time mail! I forget to delete the end of messages a lot - so consider it a saving of your sanities that I'm not sending the whole digest out each time this happens! Thanks for posting this, and I'm about to shoot the message, not the messenger! Judy needs to lighten up! Was Peter Gabriel there? Or Seal? Billy Idol, George Hamilton, Tom Petty, CSN, The Byrds, The Indigo Girls, Janet Jackson, etc., etc., etc. If Bob's amazing "Covers and Contributions" project has taught us anything, it's that there are an infinite number of people who have sung Joni's songs! In fact, the only person who "shouldn't" have been at the Tribute was James Taylor - since he has actually sung with Joni! To the best of my knowledge, none of the other performers have. The tribute was not about "let's get all the people who made Joni's songs famous together for the night", but more about "let's see what a new batch of perfomers (with the exception of JT) can do with her songs". Like it was already said - how much money did Joni make for Judy by giving her the song! >Asked to appraise Mitchell's shaky performance of standards >off her new album, Collins commented, "Don't ask me about that." In light of recent threads(from this weekend...ironic?), I must say that the people I met in New Orleans are the nicest, most wonderful folk I have ever met. I arrived with Holley on Thursday, dropped our stuff off at the hostel, and went to play at a coffeehouse on Julia Street. There was noone there, it was about 7:45, and I was in the middle of Neil Young "Long May You Run", when in walked Michael, Kakki, Claud, Lori and her husband(sp?), and I got these great vibes from them right from the beginning. Several more people arrived and I eventually stopped playing and met everybody. From then on it just got better and better. Steve Mixon had his mandolin with him so he sat in with me on my second show which was at this cozy little coffeehouse, with a hobbit hole feel, and we just had a blast playing together. I must tell you that Steve is an amazing mandolin player and it was a great pleasure to be able to play with him. We went out with a bang on Friend of the Devil when I snapped a string. After the coffeehouse gig, we went out for a much needed, late night meal at a local restaurant, and ended up being the only ones there and entertaining the wait/kitchen staff with some impromptu jams(including the "birthday song" which I WILL post the lyrics for and beautiful renditions by Michael of "Long Ago and Far Away" and "You Turn Me on I'm a Radio"). Friday morning, I had beignets at the Cafe Du Mond, walked around the French Quarter, found a NEAR MINT vinyl copy of "Court and Spark" hidden amongst the typical junk at a local thrift store...I'm listening to this right now...it is so warm and clear and there is not a single scratch on it--what better way to cap off a weekend as amazing as this! Friday night, we met up for a gourmet dinner at Cafe Giovanni's...mmmmmmmmm...ventured over to the House of Blues and hung out in their opium den for awhile... anyway, I'm rather tired and must retire soon so I will not go on in too much detail-I'm sure others will post reports as well-but I wanted to post something and to take my hat off to Michael for putting together one hell of a weekend--I am eternally grateful. I must add that though I'm not sure what I expected, the tribute show at the Howlin Wolf went way beyond whatever expectations I brought with me and was a truly unique experience I am very honored to have been a part of. There was just this outpouring of joni songs from ALL KINDS of people who were all extremely professional and each amazing in their own way. There was so much talent there in that bar that night, it was 2 in the morning and I was telling Kakki, I've heard so much awesome music tonight I can't listen to anymore, I don't have any room to take anymore in and it was still going when I had to leave. I got to hear Catgirl, Steve, Marcel, Claud, and David all perform! Cheers to you all for a great set! There is some amazing talent around here! And if that wasn't enough, the Jason Marsalis Quintet just blew my mind. anyway, I've really got to get some sleep...but I just can't say enough about what a wonderful weekend this was. Thanks to everybody who participated. Zoinks, this pile of digests waiting here freaked me out. Anyway, love this "least favorite song" thread, even though I *am* a tad afraid for not worshipping every note that comes out of Joni's mouth -- goodness, we are turning into a zealous lot, aren't we -- sadly, I don't face west and think of Joni every morning (It's a joke people, chill out right now! Arghhhhhh!!) Well, as I have said before, most of STAS doesn't do it for me, but specific songs on her later work that I can take or leave would be....hmmmm.... I really don't like "Otis and Marlena" and, gasp, BYT is fine, but if I never heard it again, I don't think I'd cry. "Sunny Sunday" I always skip over, and, even though everyone seems to love this song, "Ethiopia" is the one track I skip on DED. And you know, there are a bunch more, but I just am not thinking straight right now since I finally got this damn root canal today. If I wasn't on this codeine right now, I am sure I would be able to think of more. But then again, who knows, I used to not like HOSL, and now it's my favorite, so I just might be singing to Ethiopia yet! Have yourselves a wonderful Tuesday my friends, welcome to all the New Listers, all you N.O. folk have yourselves some fun, and Kakki darling, hurry up and get back home, this damn frying pan is too wide.... seriously, I mean it, the eggs just slosh all over the place! NP: Once Upon a Time -- Simple Minds ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 29 May 2000 23:29:54 -0600 From: Les Irvin Subject: New Orleans JoniFest! Joniphiles - Thought I'd throw in my report and try to describe the indescribable event this weekend in New Orleans. Others will do a much better job than I... but here's a few great moments from the near-perfect weekend: - - Gathered around the table peeling crawfish with the JMDL international consortium. - - John Van Tiel's stash of fresh Belgian chocolates. - - Jamming to Celtic tunes with Steve Mixon. - - Singing with the newly-formed soon-to-be-opening-for-Joni "Eric and the Pips" combo, featuring Bob "The Lyric God" Muller on vocals. The group thrilled the audience with a live performance of the entire side two of "Abbey Road" and bored them to tears with the extended dance/rap mix of "Hit The Road Jack". Eric "The Guitar God" Worthington didn't miss a beat - - even throughout the rather obscure Steely Dan set... - - Rubbing elbows with Trent Reznor (Joni fan?) in the members-only lounge at the House of Blues. - - Attempting to find the truth behind the rumor that bars on Bourbon Street actually DO close at 6AM with Catgirl, Eric, and Laura. - - Bryan Thomas' new "do" and new band knocking us out once again. Best of all, however, was the Joni Mitchell Tribute Sunday night at the Howlin' Wolf - an almost seven hour tour de force of Joni tunes by an absolutely amazing group of musicians. The turnout was quite good as the house was nearly full. Leslie Mixon led a candlelight vigil for Wally that was very touching. The whole place - even the locals who weren't quite sure what was happening - were very reverent and touched as Leslie read a tribute to Wally written by Jim. Susan Cowsill (remember her?) and Leslie Smith knocked me out with their incredible voices; The Jason Marsalis Band did an amazing set of mainly HOSL tunes; Paz's Band ripped through a killer electric NeilYoungesque version of Hejira; David Lahm brought a few members of Marsalis' band back for another excellent set. Then Bryan Thomas blew the house down at about 2:30 AM... Many, many other local Nawlins musicians were sandwiched in between those highlights. It was also great to see all the jimdlers on stage holding their own with the rest of the pros. Victor, Steve Polifka, Marcel, Catgirl (with sideman David Lahm) did great too-short sets. Claudia got the place on their feet with her splendid version of "Conversation". I'm sure I'm forgetting someone - my apologies in advance! The level and diversity of musicianship was simply amazing. Bob and I had to keep pinching ourselves to make sure it was all real. Or maybe Bob just likes to pinch... I'm not sure. I can't end without saying something about the amazing guy that put this all together - the Pazman. They say you can see the measure of an individual by the friends that they keep. If so, the Paz is without measure. All these amazing musicians did this gig for free - for the Ruth Paz Foundation and for their love of Joni's music. But, it was also very apparent that they all loved Michael Paz just as well. Were it not for his friendship and guidance and perseverance, this amazing event never would have happened. Truly, it was one of the greatest weekends I've ever spent on this planet. Thanks to all who were there that helped make it an unforgettable gathering... and to Paz for pulling it all together.
