I think you're right about the origins of Asylum and it's subsequent immersion into Warners, but I'm pretty sure Geffen had links with Warner until the sell-out to MCA in 1991. I used to buy quite a few Geffen albums back then, and they not only had a Warner catalogue number, but the packaging would also have that embossed "W" logo. > It was always sort of odd, IMHO, for Joni to be on the Geffen label because it > was initially known for going for the cutting edge groups emerging in the > 80s. A classy tax-write off that gave the label a bit more prestige. > She has said this many times and it was always my take, too. Maybe why there's > some bad feelings now. It seems quite a few of the "prestige" acts that signed with Geffen in the early 80s had bad experiences...Neil Young being the most notorious example, but I also heard an interview with Elton John back in 1990 in which he spoke with regret at ever joining the label (although he's been on Polygram here in the UK since the late 70s, he was on Geffen in the US during the 80s). Cher also spent the 1980s on Geffen, only to move to WEA around the same time as Joni. Same with Don Henley, his new album is also on Warner. In fact, all of these big-name established acts associated with the Geffen label during that decade have - to a man (and woman) now switched *back* to a Warner-related company, be it Reprise, WEA or the Warner Brothers imprint itself. It probably hasn't been noticed all that much, since in most people's minds the likes of Joni, Henley and Neil Young have always *seemed* to be Warner artists. MCA has, of course, now become Universal, bringing with it a whole range of new problems and reshuffles. Good question, Jamie, and thanks for the insight Kakki! Warners also bought up cool lables like Atlantic and Electra and then sold the whole shebang to Kinney Corp, the car parks people in the 1970's That's why Joni and Neil Young records in the 70's had "A Kinney company" written on the label. Asylum was a quasi independent company set up by Roberts (her manager) and Geffen but funded by Atlantic (a Warner Compny). So in reality she was still linked to Warners. "Unlike nearly all aspiring songwriters, the Mitchells put their business together properly at the start. "The one thing I had was my own publishing company," Joni said. "Chuck and I set up two publishing companies. That was at his instigation. That was very insightful." Joni's company was called Siquomb Publishing, and the name came from one of her many writing projects. As she would explain on Philadelphia radio station WMMR in March 1967, she was writing a mythology, the names of its various members derived from acronyms based on descriptive phrases. There were, for instance, a race of miniature women, the Posall ("Perhaps Our Souls Are Little Ladies"), and men, the Mosalm ("Maybe Our Souls Are Little Men"). Siquomb was the queen of the mythology, her name meaning, "She Is Queen Undisputedly Of Mind Beauty."
