Jamie, This is partly off the top of my head and partly from hard knowledge, but it's a matter of some of the record companies starting out as independent entities and then being swallowed up by the bigger guys. I recall, but could be wrong, that Asylum was it's own company that was later swallowed up by Warner. Same with Reprise. Geffen started his own indie label in the early 80s and then sold out to MCA in around 1991. The Geffen label is the only one not connected with Warner. It was always sort of odd, IMHO, for Joni to be on the Geffen label because it was initially known for going for the cutting edge groups emerging in the 80s. Not that Joni didn't belong there, but they were really trolling for the cutting edge unknowns at the Hollywood clubs back when they weer just starting out. Long ago, and long before I heard Joni say it herself in various articles, I thought she was only brought into Geffen to give it a little cache and not really to sell or promote her. A classy tax-write off that gave the label a bit more prestige. She has said this many times and it was always my take, too. Maybe why there's some bad feelings now. That song has a lot of words and some of the verses are very similar. In Concord she seemed to only be looking at the first line of every verse. She seemed to do fine once she knew what was coming next. Maybe it was just the order of the verses that she needed help with. I'm very good at memorizing song lyrics. I'm on another list called Songbirds, which basically discusses female singers that sing the "Great American Songbook" - ColePorter, Irving Berlin, Gershwin, Rodgers & Hart, etc. So, of course Joni has been discussed quite a bit since word came out about the release of Both Sides Now. Some people were upset that Joni sings the line, I'd rather be punch drunk twice, instead of singing, I'd rather be ga-ga. the 2nd time around. Even with the lyric in front of her, she always sings punch drunk - I guess she just doesn't like going ga-ga? Joni also forgot the lyric to, if I remember correctly, You've Changed, last night. I really wanted you all to love it and you did. Your reviews were just outstanding - a sure sign that it was good ;-) I'm so glad you experienced the same magic so many of us have so far. I loved reading Patrick confirm that the Overture was a Debussy piece -this was Michele Dulson's guess after the L.A. show (Steve - please give her the prize). I recall a thread here eons ago when we discussed Joni's affinity with Debussy, not only in the music but in their approaches to artistic creation. Debussy was the only classical composer I ever seemed interested in playing when I was young and I love him. And the "Clouds" connection, too - how great! I connected with Patrick's feeling that these could be Joni's most fantastic concerts ever. I've discussed the show with a few of the gang who saw it in L.A. and we all feel our DNA has changed a bit since then. When we rave, it's not just our usual Joni fan rave, it's coming out of our very pores. When we listen to the "old" versions of BSN, Case of You, Hejira, Be Cool, Judgement, and For The Roses, they somehow seem a little lacking now. We have been hungry, craving to hear that concert again. We've been yearning, almost whining for it. When the envelope containing my fix showed up in the mail today, I was finally at peace once again. Sigh ;-) Now that I have had it on repeated listens for hours, I'm catching so much more than I did in my stunned state at the show. It's a marvel. Despite some comments we many have read, the L.A. audience was overwhelmingly gaga and over the top giddy with love throughout the show - the evidence is there right on the recording. Isham is the best I've ever heard him, and I'd already thought I heard his best. Joni is marvelous throughout - I feel like I am hearing history being made. Herbie, Erskine and Bob Sheppard are playing the concert of their life. Any imperfections from the orchestra are trumped by a strong, overwhelming spirit of divine improvisation. Case of You is like you've never heard it. Be Cool is now a classic. Hejira is a new song from a magical dimension, brilliantly original and beautiful. Judgement is now an epic piece and For The Roses - I still can't even find the right words for it. Thank you all for being here to share it with. And for those who haven't been there yet, be prepared to have your life changed a little.
