Within the music industry she is deservedly one of the most revered contemporary songwriters of the 20th Century. Yet for the past 25 years, following her 1974 commercial peak "Court and Spark," her work has more often than not fallen on deaf ears among the general public. Mitchell lived up to her reputation on both fronts Wednesday night as she played to a crowd of slightly more than 4,000 at West Palm Beach's MARS Music Amphitheatre. Fans who shied away, perhaps dismayed by the fact that this tour eschewed the bulk of Mitchell's catalog in favor of orchestrated jazz vocal standards written by the likes of Rodgers and Hart, Harry Warren, and Harold Arlen, missed a rich concert. "I'm just a chick with a band this time. I bought a bra and burned my guitar," Mitchell joked in one of many displays of humor. On her Both Sides Now Tour, Mitchell performed the entirety of her current standards CD - the lush and thematic "Both Sides Now" - in sequential order. Accompanied by a 70-piece orchestra, featuring musicians culled from South Florida, Mitchell upped the CD's emotional impact twofold in the live environment. Cigarette-cured, her voice, husky and tentative, Mitchell took her audience on a film-noir styled "trip I'm sure you've all taken, the arc of romantic love, when the pheremones go into the receptors and you've had it." The show started with the flush of full-on ardor with "You're My Thrill." Doubt and recrimination set in on "You've Changed." And she swam for a while in the obsession stage (her own "A Case of You"). At this point, she told of a long-ago fight with ex-husband Chuck Mitchell after a gig in Coconut Grove. His mother told Joni, "The first waffle should be used to warm up the pan and then thrown out." Love lost and perhaps willing to try again, Mitchell's stellar set finally peaked with a reflective take of her '60s standard "Both Sides Now." The livelier second set touched on her 1976 "Hejira" CD and she closed her two-hour concert with a jazzy cover of Marvin Gaye's "Troubled Man." The lasting impressing left an afterglow. Mitchell takes you through the wringer and, at 56, she has the experience to make her look at love indelible in a way her younger sisters in song cannot match. In sum, this was a brilliantly conceived concert. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 20 May 2000 16:50:28 -0400 From: "Jim L'Hommedieu" Subject: Re: Fiddles on BSN I haven't really weighed in on BSN but I think it's an interesting exercise. I think it's Joni's big ol' wet kiss of an album. A wetter kiss than I expected, that's for sure. A surprisingly wet kiss. A sloppy wet kiss in places. But some of the tracks are really cool like "I Wish I Were In Love Again" and "BSN". It's not "Blue" but that's okay with me. It's a half-full glass but it's not the drink I was expecting. And it's nice that she's growing again. More than anything I'm ecstatic that she's excited about performing again. I'm a slut for Joni- I'll take her anyway I can get her! They keep NO mp3 files on their site. That is pretty much Napster's claim. The other side is accusing them of distributing copyrighted material without a licence (or being a facilitator for the same). The band Metallica is suing Napster for big bucks, too. According to a recent article in Rolling Stone, there are whole dorms full of college students putting together music libraries without the artists getting a cent. That ain't right. On the other hand, as Brenda said, this kind of a setup can be a great promotion tool. I think the bottom line is whether the artist has given permission for the use of their material. As a musician, it concerns me that I could spend lots of money and time working on a recording, only to have it being distributed for free. Plus a cd called Tanworth-in-Arden (where he grew up) that is amazing. i heard that commercial, and was kind of pissed they used his song to sell a car. But hey, if Jimi's "star spangled banner" is selling pop tarts, who would be surprised?? They did put a song of his on a cool movie called "dream with the fishes" though. You should definitely DEFINITELY check out his music. A friend told me not to buy the "greatest hits" Way to Blue first, but to get one of the regular albums. My absolute favorite song of his is Cello Song, and it's on Five Leaves Left. Nick Drake's lyrics are so freakin incredible................phew. I >>discoverer<< his music when i was at border's one night, and they had Way to Blue on the listening rack. I listened to Cello Song 5 times. anyways, i won't ramble on about how much i love his music, hopefully you'll check it out yourself! - -angela ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 20 May 2000 20:28:40 -0300 From: "Wally Kairuz" Subject: talk to the hand (NJC) oh but i saw fran drescher [sp?] do the talk to the hand routine in the beautician and the beast before the powers movies came out. wallyk > > << (Does anyone know where "Talk to the hand" came from to begin with? > All I know is, everyone, including my 9-yr old, seems to be saying it.) >> > > As the mother of 4 boys, I can answer this one easily. Oh I don't know, MG, they look pretty involved to me. Every time I look at it I wonder who took the photo Joni did the painting from. It doesn't make me think of ice. It reminds me of seeing a couple on the subway (everything at some point can be seen on NYC subways, the drama of it all) and it's morning and I guess this couple just hadn't finished playing yet. And it's crowded of course. So we're all hearing a very un-subway-like sucky sound, and people look, look down, look again, look away, look again, looooookk, awwaaaaay, phew, look up, look again, sneak a peek, look at everyone else looking, swiveling heads, the view out the window into the tunnel reeeaaaaally needs my attention, uh oh, there's a reflection, some giggling, but nooooooo, we're not watching, fascinating, kind of like seeing some alien perpetual motion machine. Shortest subway ride I've ever had. So the photographer somehow kept it together to actually use a camera. How? Here's what I added tonight, I just felt like commenting on these: Leonard Nimoy's "BSN" - Leonard & Claudine are the King & Queen of cheese! Wow, is this one putrid! He even starts it out "swirls and curls of angel hair"! What, Joni's lyrics not good enough for you, pointy-eared boy!? Nazareth, "This Flight Tonight" - boy, this one brings back some memories! I remember hearing it when it first came out in the 70's, don't think I've heard it since. You gotta figure Nazareth's vocalist owned all the amplifiers when the band started up, otherwise they'd have never let him sing. And in an extreme bit of irony, I also got Nazareth's newer "unplugged" version of the same and it is GREAT! The vocal is much better, the whole rhythm and tone of the cover is changed, and there's some really good slide guitar too...A+ Rosanne Cash, "River" I don't know if this is the prettiest River I've heard, but it's up there. This one is very smooth...thanks to Clive in England! James Brown, "How Do You Stop" OK, so shoot me, it's not really a Joni song, but like "Twisted" I'll always think of it as one. Besides, the righteous JB infuses this one with soul and it's a winner. Anyway, I think Joni decided to do the song after she heard this version, right? Sarah McLachlan & Lilith Fair, "BYT" If Joni won't come to the Lilith Fair, the Lilith Fair can come to Joni! This one's super, you can tell by the gang singing this one that they all love and respect Siquomb immensely, nice arrangement too. Jason Falkner, "BSN" Wow Wow Wow!!! Most of you will think this one sacrilege, but it rocked my world tonight! Picture the Ramones and The Byrds melding into a jangly, power pop rockin' group and this is what you get. Allright, so some of the sensitivity of the lyric is diluted, but man this thing kicks ass!! Where did this guy come from? Thanks to Philip for these final three - Philip, you're about to earn a spot in the pantheon of my "Hall of Fame" contributors! Volume 5 is just about done, probably enough room for 2 more tunes. Volume 4, the cheesy one, is moving along slowly waiting for Stephen (aka Cheese Whiz) to get back home and send me Doris Day, Jim Nabors, maybe some others....
