I'm glad she's wearing something different. I think Joni is having fun playing the 'chirp' in these concerts and dressing up in her version of those slinky evening gowns the big band singers used to wear. Although I wasn't crazy about the outfit she opened the Concord show with, there was something about it that made me think of a taped performance of Peggy Lee's from sometime in the 80s I saw on cable recently. Peggy was wearing something similar in style to the long coat type thing that Joni had on. She also was wearing a turban. It made her look rather regal. Maybe it was the blonde hair but Joni reminded me of Peggy Lee at the Concord performance. The outfit certainly was noticeable and gave the impression of a vibrant flame on the stage. Diva Divine By Rebecka Hawkins, 5-14-00 The hawk soars on outstretched wings Over the Concord Pavilion, Where tonight Joni sings The green hills darken in amber twilight The waxing moon brightens At this edge of night Under clear sky on grass so green Seats and lawn fill with strangers The space between Laughter is heard As all await Our Bright Star, coming on late The orchestra tunes Counting time For Joni Mitchell, Diva Divine!! Cheering, clapping Lights go out Now, is when, it's all about Vincent Mendoza's hands skillfully implore As purple neon lights The enormous stage floor Flutes, oboes, violins The audience is hushed And the show begins Gathering strength, with ebb and flow The muse and the music From the orchestra's soul With a graceful stride Joni comes center stage And with a breath, we are on the same page Other's words and music tonight she sings Still her voice has us in her spell All of our feelings on love told so well She sings "Both Sides Now" Of love lost and found This is where our feet leave the ground Of Joni's own songs This is the one That made this crowd come undone This is the one we loved the best Though we also dug all the rest!! I joined this list months ago, posted a couple of notes asking you all to help me with suggestions for which Joni CDs to buy next.... I had just discovered "Blue" even though I've been a Joni fan since the 70's. I took all of your advice, bought bought bought, and have been reading your postings with great interest. However, I've been lurking and not posting anything, and now the excitement of seeing Joni in Boston soon is taking over. I cannot wait! So I'm ending my lurkish (lurkish?) ways and coming forward again. First of all, thanks SO much to all of you who have posted such wonderful reviews! I've devoured every spoiler.... they only heighten my anticipation and make me more excited. I have my heart set on a signed litho.... I do hope we have them at our venue here. But all this excitement has me tripping down Memory Lane a bit, revisiting Joni's importance in my life throughout the years, and I've stumbled across a foggy page that I hope someone can help to clear up for me. I don't remember the date..... was it sometime in 1978? 79?..... that Joni was on tour and scheduled to do an outdoor summer concert in Colt State Park in Bristol, Rhode Island. I had two tickets and was BESIDE myself with glee. I don't remember what tour this was. All I remember is that the show ended up being cancelled.... Joni had collapsed? or cancelled dates due to exhaustion? For some reason, that stands out in my memory as the reason the show was cancelled.... that, and the utter depths of depression I sank to afterward. Do any JMDLers out there remember this? Can you help me flesh out this memory..... the whys and whens and hows? Did anyone else have tickets to this show? What year? What tour? And why did she cancel? In any case, I'm looking forward to 5/28 as my opportunity to heal that hurt and soar with those of you who are riding high on having seen our fabulous Siquomb!!!! Looking forward to reading more reviews.... keep them coming! I was working as a camp counselor in Litchfield, CT and bought tickets to her scheduled appearance in New Jersey at the Garden State Arts Center. This would have been my first Joni concert and I was really excited about it, no matter that I had no clue how I was going to get down to South Jersey and back to northern CT in the limited time off that camp counselors were allowed.
