What a wonderful evening with Joni!! In the covered open air amphitheater, the Florida night was dry and breezy and the near full moon hovered through the palm trees behind the audience. I arrived with my husband Steve and two friends (who are new to Joni) about a half hour before showtime. I was anxious to get to the concession stands to buy posters and lithos and anything else that looked good. The lines were thick with people at the stand with only two people selling. To my dismay the prices of the lithos were not the same as those in California... here the lithos were $50 unsigned and $175 signed!! In California the signed ones were $100 and I had planned to get several. I was a bit upset about that and now I had to decide. There were 4 to choose from..the front of BSN, the back of BSN, the yellow flowers and the one of Don and Joni tongue kissing. (Not my favorite.) The t-shirts were $27. The BSN one is a dark greenish brown with the front photo on the front and the back photo on the back. Nowhere does it say Joni Mitchell or Both Sides Now on it (except in the tiny copyright). There was also the Turbulent Indigo shirt, the Taming the Tiger shirt and surprise...the tongue kissing shirt, as well as a dark brown shirt that looked like the sticker on promo cd. I couldn't read it and I didn't think it was that attractive. I bought two shirts and was disappointed I had to settle for only one signed litho (the front BSN). They did provide a tube, although I had also brought my own. There was also a black quilted (I think) vest for $50 something and a black mug for $20. The mugs were all sold out and I didn't see what was on them. A bit pricey for that though. . They also didn't have the "Happiness is the best facelift" shirt. I overheard someone say there were no programs. Disappointed! :( I had planned to take a bunch to keep and to share. I still want one. I wonder if each venue is doing something else or if they ran out of them in California. I then went to find my seat. Got a nice greeting from Orlando Ted. Got settled in to row L in the middle of the left section. Not as close a view as I'd hoped but OK. Nobody checked for cameras, and I got my digital ready. I saw a lot of the concert through the viewfinder. The set list was the same as described at the previous shows. It started with a orchestra piece unfamiliar to me but my friend thought it might be DeBussey. Afterwards, Joni stolled out, unannounced, and started right in with "Your My Thrill". The orchestra was full and lush and the sound was fine. She seemed very happy to be up there singing. I love her wonderful sway and expressive hand movements! The outfits she wore to this show were the best yet!! She seems to have an entire wardrobe of what I think is Issey Miyake. The first one was a very vivid turquoise full length dress with a long cape, the inside of which was a an equally vivid green. The fabric was a vertically crinkled parachute-like material. The front of the dress had a cropped-length top over the bodice, and below that, the dress had 3 layers that folded upwards. There was a green fabric belt above her waist. It was sort of in a kimono style. I barely got the see them, but a pair a white crinkly pants peeked out a couple of inches below the bottom of the dress. She was wearing white sandals. (I barely saw this because her feet were always behind the speakers, out of my view.) At one point she pushed the cape back over her shoulders, which exposed short green sleeves. What was really lovely about the dress was how the cape billowed in the breeze. While she sang, she occasionally held the ends of the cape in her hands and moved it around. At one point she even wrapped it around her clutching her hands to her chest. Very effective. Her jewelry was all gold, and she wore it sparingly. (Gold chain necklace, bracelet, a couple of rings and small dangly earrings). She spoke of the arc of a romance in Both Sides Now. She talked about her concert days in Coconut Grove and Coral Gables, Florida which got a very positive reaction. The stories have already been described so I won't repeat them. People were calling out songs for her to sing. I think the biggest response was to A Case of You. For the most part the audience was either enraptured by her music or being polite. I loved her response when someone asked her to play guitar. She said she didn't bring any instuments. He said he brought one and she said, "I forgot how to play,,, I bought a bra and burned my guitar." (I wonder if she's used that line before? They were kind of perky though ;-) . During the intermission I ran into Don from Ft. Laud and Jimmy Stewart and David Mingus from Ft. Myers. I was greeted with wonderful hugs. After intermission Joni really WOWED me with what she wore. This might be hard to describe but here goes. You've got to see the pictures! She had on a shiny black, very definite accordian-pleated dress. Very avante-garde! Something you might see on a Japanese runway model with very wacky hair. The front and back had a V-neck. The dress gracefully flowed from her shoulders and then flipped out into a bell shape around the knees, (as if supported by wire, but it might be a very stiff fold). Then it narrows again towards the ankles. Beneath that, the white pants were again peeking out. I didn't see if she changed her shoes or not. She rolled the sleeves up a couple of times. The bell part of the dress moved in opposition to her. It was very wild and actually very flattering. It looked like it was fun to wear. It even seemed to change color in the different lighting. Can you tell I loved this one too? (Wonder how to hang it in the closet or pack it? Maybe she could lend it to me for my daughter's wedding next month. I still don't have a dress. This one certainly makes a statement and I'm sure it would fit. ;-) ) Joni really grooved in the second half. I am always moved by her new version of Both Sides Now. As much as she enjoys singing the standards, she seemed much more energized singing her own words. She told the story about Beethoven and how he felt he got popular with the worst piece of shit that he wrote. (Mmm, sounds familiar.) I loved when she sang Ludwig's Tune, and Hejira and For the Roses. Be Cool, too. I can't wait to here the reworked versions of these earlier works on her next CD. The orchestra was a bit overpowering though. My friend said she couldn't hear the words on these. I heard it clearly, but I knew them by heart. I would also love to hear these with less accompanyment. She kept referring to Larry as her Russian (something....I forgot) ex-husband. They always seem share a kiss on stage. Very sweet. Her encore was Trouble Man. She scooted off the stage right after that. Another treasured Joni evening for me. By the way, if any of you are thinking of going to one of the future shows on the tours, and are concerned about not having tickets, there seemed to be a lot of people selling tickets for reduced prices in the parking lot. Don mentioned a guy in the first row in front of him had just bought his ticket for $75. He was practically on the stage. Looking forward to all the reviews. I'll write more as I think of it. Hope you enjoyed the detailed dress descriptions. But check the photos on JM.com. A picture is definitely worth a thousand words. So much Joni!! (Not my favorite.) Regarding the tongues: The more I think about Donald and Joni's tongue shot, the more I think that it is not them french kissing or doing anything kiss-like. It has been making me think about being a kid and hanging out with another neighborhood kid and wondering about the grossest thing we could do: eat a dead mouse? Couldn't find any. Wear my baby brother's diaper as a hat? Not when my mom kept feeding him spinach. Touch tongues? Yuck, but...maybe, just maybe, we could....stick....out....the...tips.....and....touch! And we did and exploded into giggles. And I get that giggly, "feel-like-a-kid-again" feeling from that picture. >> The outfits she wore to this show were the best yet!! She seems to have an entire wardrobe of what I think is Issey Miyake. >> My daughter Signe is a devotee of haute couture, (not my genes, I can guarantee you!), and thinks that the opening Concord outfit was an Issey. Very runway looking but again, the more I think about it, when I muse about the crinkly material, I wonder if she had a theme of dressing a bit like her BSN LE box. Think about it: the crinkly material is a bit like the lining of a fancy box of chocolates and Joni is awfully delectable and she is on a theme kick with the BSN stuff. Enough thinking for this morning - must save some thought cells for work. Did she have the crinkly thing cleaned and wore it again in Florida? >> I do have a couple of comments on Joni's wardrobe, although Pearl has done a very good job of describing her outfits. I thought Joni's wardrobe was "fun". I can't see her strolling in the mall wearing them, but they were great for the concert. I assume they were both Miyakee (sp), but I don't know much about fashion. I did like both of the outfits better than the gold crinkly one she wore in SF. Pleats were the theme for the Florida wardrobe. The first dress was tourquois with a bright green lining. Not my cup of tea, but it looked good on Joni! The second dress looked like something you might see Grace Jones wear, although not as revealing. It was a shiny black pleated number which clung to her body until it belled out around her knees and them tapered back down to her ankles. My partner said "I told Joni NO WIRE HANGERS". It did look like she had a wire coat hanger stuck in her dress LOL. I'm sure Mr. Blackwell wouldnt' have anything nice to say about Joni's new style, but what does he know anyway! I think Joni was doing something new and fun. I'm glad she's wearing something different. Jimmy ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 19 May 2000 08:08:30 -0700 From: "James L. Very occasionally I pass on little nuggets like these to DJ, Gene Shay, who, I like to think, would be on here if he had the time. Today he has sent me this story and news of an imminent broadcast he will be doing on June 2nd. He writes, "I'll be joining afternoon DJ Helen Leicht (pronounced, "light" ) and playing excerpts of my 1967 -68 interviews with Joni. The station is celebrating Joni's appearance in town that night." This will also be broadcast on the net (see details below) and he'd be pleased if we could pass the word around. If someone could record this for me, I would be really grateful. I have only read of Gene's effect on early FM radio, his inspiration to so many in his profession, his long running and highly respected folk show and, of course, his special fondness for The Enchanted Lady. I can't wait to hear what he sounded like then and what he sounds like today. (and the same goes Joni). As an oldie, this would be a very special treasure for me). Here's Gene's full post. >> Hi Paul, The first time I met Joni and Chuck she was wearing a gold lamé minskirt and matching gold high heel pumps (Not super high heels--more modest). They were both appearing at Philadelphia's Second Fret Coffeehouse. Chuck would do his set to open---mainly songs from Three Penny Opera and old covers by Gordon Lightfoot, etc. Then Joni would do her set---her own songs mainly. And then Chuck would come back on stage and join her in Circle Game. Ironically, I just spent some time with Chuck in Philadelphia where he was booked for one week to play elementary and middle schools--one each morning. It's part of an outreach program sponsored by the Phila. Folksong Society. Chuck told me he hardly sings professionally anymore, He lives in Iowa where he buys old houses, cheap and after fixing them up, sells them at a higher price. One more item that may interest you. On Friday, June 2 on WXPN, Philadelphia. Helen's show is on from 10Am till 2PM and at this point I'm not sure what segment is set aside for the Joni interviews--most likely around noon. But we are on the Internet: XPN- Member Supported Radio from the University. which is also file://xpn.org Thought you may wish to pass along this info. Thanks for the Joni story, Gene >>>>>>>>>>>>> PaulC ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 19 May 2000 08:51:43 -0700 (PDT) From: Don Rowe Subject: Re: Urge for Going ControversyNJC - --- catman wrote, in response to MG: << I've had one of those "onion butts" at Outback > Steakhouse! Urge was one of the songs Joni taught me herself and one which I played for years as part of my own sets. although I've never really thought about it before in this sense, you have a point. beside the fact that this song was particularly well suited to my voice, a kind of showtunish ('Mariah') alto-lead, *wondering if there is such a thing* of the material I performed, not a lot of the popular folk stuff of the time contained any particularly 'manly' moments (ie: the kind that made the ladies go hmmm) and, thinking of it now, Urge, as performed by a guy, did/does lend itself to such a feeling... two segments which stand out in my mind in this regard are 1) "I had a girl in summer time, with summer colored skin...' and, even more so, 2) the last verse which comes off particularly powerful in 'male mode', 'I'll lock the vagrant winter out, and bolt my wanderin' in...' ...on top of this, in a strong male voice, the melody line is very powerful, tending to give the listener chills if done right. Does anyone complain about the "poor" fuel economy of a Ferrari? Does anyone complain that too much "cold" concrete was used to make the Empire State Building? No, these arguments overlook the magnificence of the object when examined on its own terms. And so it is with the argument that Joni's voice has deteriorated. Those who make this argument lost touch with her muse before she approached the brilliance of albums like HOSL. They perceive a "sudden" change in her voice because they didn't 'get it' then. And they don't 'get it' now. They don't 'get' that in the 1960s she couldn't sing jazz. They don't 'get' that back then, she couldn't possibly have sung the standards like she's doing on this tour. If Joni's talent in 1967 was a half glass of milk, they see the "folkie glass" as now nearly empty but they don't 'get' that the "jazz glass" is absolutely brimming! Apparently they see a faded folkie propped up in front of an orchestra. To look back upon her 60s voice and complain that she lost it, is to be stuck in the "folkie misconception". They want Joni to come out with a 6 string and paint "Chelsea Morning" for them again. They remain permanently fixed on the image of the empty canvas. The texture of the blank. The nil void. The clear soprano. The old singles. I contend that they never really knew Joni, at all. They misunderstood her first album, "Song To A Seagull". Seeing only the superficial they saw the first waif of modern rock. They didn't see the rich canvas that David Crosby saw. They didn't appreciate the wonderfully inventive and complex finger picking in alternate tunings and remarkable, non-standard chords. They missed the sharply observed character sketch that is "Nathan La Franeer". They comprehended on their own level- folkie-literal-realism. Ultimately, of course they completely missed the dizzying metaphorical complexity of "Cactus Tree". How could they possibly make the transition to understanding that "Amelia" is an art song about loss and courage? Or that "Paprika Plains" is a spacey long-form adventure? Or "Sex Kills" is a bitter social commentary? Joni has always been about complexity. Look at the relationship in "The Last Time I Saw Richard". The duality of "Both Sides Now". Her best stories have always been about rich color, exquisite multiplicity. Even in her 6 string days, she was never bound by the limitations of the 6 string itself. Similarly the rock band "The Police" were informed by elements of calypso, but they were not reggae itself. And so it was with Joni. She was always developing, even when the public perceived her as a folkie, a fixed object in space. Luckily for us she is more like Alexander Calder, a dabbler. Had Calder limited himself to being a Painter, now and forever, he never would have developed his mobiles, let alone his singular stabiles. Joni, the Police, and Calder all began working in one medium but they were not limited to just that one medium. McLuhan said that the "medium is the message" but only to the great unwashed. The TV-obsessed eyes. The uneducated ear. In contrast, Joni's work was never about folk music. Folk music was her medium but not her message. Her work was about and continues to be about metaphor, exploration. To the cognizant, the truth is never on the surface. It is a campfire but it is not about flames. It's about being transported. About warmth. Comfort. Fellowship. And most importantly, resonance. - ----- "The opinions expressed may not necessarily represent the management of Audiophile's Corner. They might. I don't have the CD handy, but the lyrics (a presumably fictional report of a conversation between Prince and a saucy waitress named Dorothy Parker), go something like this: "Mind if I turn on the radio? Oh, Ah!" Her favorite song, she said. And it was Joni singing, "Help me, I think I'm falling in love with you." Brrrrring! The phone rang and she said, "whoever's calling can't be as cute as you." Right then and there I knew I was through. (Dorothy Parker was cool.) That's a highly recommended album, if you aren't familiar with it . . .
