He uses pretty in this line as a put down of all those other men that the woman has flitting around her telling her what they think she wants to here. Does anyone here know?? It depends... (doesn't it always?) The DVD drive itself knows what region it's allowed to play. For some drives this is fixed in stone forever, for others it can be changed a few times (1 or 5 or 10 or so). Others (although I believe these are few and far between) can be changed lots of times. The bind is that you can't just change it willy-nilly normally - get it wrong and you'll only ever be able to play region 2 discs from then on. Other wrinkles are that your player software might not even let you change the region code... or your operating system might not (for example, Windows 2000 lets my change the region code of my DVD drive) As an example, here's what Windows 2000 says about my drive:- http://www.secure-si.co.uk/chris/dvdprops.jpg So I'm afraid, all in all, it's something of a minefield, and you'll only find out by trying it. Of course, if S&L is out on region 2 (yay, good for us brits :) it must almost certainly be available in region 1. I'm not going to review the entire concert since the west coast JMDLer's did such a fine job. There were no surprises at this concert (except NO programs). She did the same set list as in the LA and SF concerts. Unfortunately we didn't have the pleasure of Herbie Hancock and Mark Isham, but I thought the orchestra did a fine job. I got to the Mars Music Amphitheater an hour and half ahead of time. Earlier that morning I had called the venue and spoke with someone in charge of the VIP boxes. He was real nice and offered me 2 passes to the VIP room. I heard some of the performers will often wait in the VIP lounge prior to the concert, and I thought there would be a chance of seeing Joni. No such luck! Fellow JMDLer David Mingus and I waited in this area for quite some time and no Joni! I finally left for the pavilion area to buy some T-shirts and a signed litho (This venue was nice enough to provide the mailing tubes with the lithos.) I had been checking Ticket Masters every so often, so it was no surprise for me that there was a poor turn out for the concert. Although the seats I purchased were on the 10th row left of stage, we were able to move closer to the center as the concert began. In fact there were plenty of empty seats in the rows in front of us. I'm not sure if sitting close to the stage was the best way to get the full effect of the orchestra, but I was thrilled to sit close enough to Joni to see her expressions. Unlike the two previous concerts which were in cooler cities and venues, this IS Florida in May. It as a clear night and the moon was one day short of being full. There was a nice warm breeze, but still this was not a place to get dressed up. I think only the main orchestra members were in tuxedos. Most of them just wore white shirts and many without ties. I saw some of the orchestra members wearing short sleeve shirts and some with their shirt tails untucked. I even saw Joni push up the sleeves on her long flowing turquoise dress a few times. I thought Joni seemed at ease for the most part of the concert. She looked radiant and I thought her voice was crisp and clear throughout the entire performance. I think she was enjoying herself and the audience seemed to be very appreciative. At one point someone in the audience shouted for her to play the guitar. Joni said "I've left all my instruments honey. I'm just a singer, a chirp with the band". Everyone laughed and then Joni noticed someone in the audience who brought a guitar. Joni said " Oh you have your guitar. I forget how to play it. So I bought a bra and burned my guitar." The audience went wild with laughter. She also got a few laughs when she talked about her gigs in Miami in the 60's and the problems she was having with her husband Chuck. She said " even his own Mother said on our wedding day (of him) the first waffle (he was the first born) should be used to warm up the pan and thrown out!" I really enjoyed the new songs. "Hejira" with the slight samba beat was my favorite, but "Ludwig's Tune" was equally fantastic. I thought "FTR" started off a bit sluggish, but it quickly gained my appreciation. I'm really looking forward to hearing that one again! "Be Cool" and "Trouble Man" were wonderful and I just can't wait to see what else she adds to the new album. You folks in Atlanta are in for a great treat! I only wish I had the time and money to attend *all* of the remaining concerts. I do want to add that it was a pleasure to finally meet fellow JMDLer Jerry Notaro and new lister "Boston Jim" Leonard. It was great to see Pearl again too! It was too bad that we didn't have any plans for a get together, but I'll get to see some of you in New Orleans. I'm exhausted and hungry! Glad to be back home. Someone asked her to get her guitar, and she responded that she had left her instruments behind and was just singing this time. "I bought a bra and burned my guitar," she said! :) She also told funny stories about Chuck and her last visit to the Miami area (1965). The two of them got into a tiff at their gig, so she decided to walk back to their hotel and ended up in a black neighborhood. When she walked by, in gold shoes and gold tights and a gold minidress and with long gold hair, the boisterous area grew very quiet, and she heard a black man's voice on a balcony saying "Let it go by....Just let it go by." The post below is taken from another list I'm on - written by Larry Dunl, who played piano for Joni in Concord. I thought this would be of interest. - Scott << I just thought I would relate an interresting and amusing experience I had in connection with Joni Mitchell's performance in Concord last Saturday. I was employed to play piano for the concert, including a six hour rehearsal in the afternoon of the same day. The arrangments feature piano solos on two songs and a few incidental piano parts. I was ready and prepared to play the concert, very much looking forward to the experience. About a half hour after the rehearsal began (I had not played yet) I was informed that Herbie Hancock had showed up at the last minute and would be playing the concert. Being it was Herbie Hancock, I couldn't be too upset, although I was pretty disappointed. I was told they would still want me to play piano on one selection, "At Last". So I stayed for the rehearsal and the show and played literally two notes, a D and an A. I did play the two notes several times. The arrangments by Vince Mendoza were some of the finest contemporary popular music orchestral arrangments I have heard. I loved being so close to the music. I wish I had been more a part of it. Joni Mitchell did a commendable job, but my feeling is the orchestra very much overwhelms her. She has long been someone I admire, primarily for her original songs and musical sensibilities. Her singing is not what it once was, but in my opinion she still conveys a great deal of feeling. P.S. Glad to see Steven Winn's review of Bobbe Norris and myself at The Plush Room this week is already on songbirds. You guys are on top of it, I must say. And what a great album - highly recommended to anyone who liked her Joni covers! Here's a review, song by song (based on my playing it non-stop all day!) - feel free to delete at will: SAME SUN (Jacqui Fitzgerald) A very upbeat song, with a reggae beat LOVE LETTERS (Lester Young) The country classic PRETTY WORDS (Jacqui Fitzgerald) A funky beat, with great lyrics and harmonies EVERY BREATH YOU TAKE (Gordon Sumner) Sung in a very similar style to the original BLACKBIRD (Lennon/McArtney) See above THE ORCHID SONG (Jacqui Fitzgerald) A beautiful song, haunting lyrics and harmonies THINGS THAT COME (IN THE NIGHT) (Jacqui Fitzgerald) Another "funky" beat WE CAN WORK IT OUT (Lennon/McArtney) Very similar to the original, but Jacqui's voice was made for this song! TIME FOR A CHANGE (Jacqui Fitzgerald) A slow rocking song, with a very strong R&B feel KINDRED (Jacqui Fitzgerald) A definite "jazz" song, again great lyrics and great harmonies - jazz is what Jacqui does best! RING RING (Jacqui Fitzgerald) Another funky song, with an R&B feel SPEEDING TIME (Carole King) Perhaps an unusual choice, but one of my favourite of Carole's more recent songs - and Jacqui certainly does it justice. Also great musicians on this album, including several of NZ's top jazz musicians. Like I said, I can highly recommend this album!
