In addition to lots of food and fun was the entertainment...you guessed it: Miss Donna Summer. She played on a temporary stage directly across a path from the anteaters. A very surreal experience, indeed. She played all of the good old stuff (Bad Girls, Hot Stuff, This Time I Know Its For Real), and a couple of new songs which were also good. It was proudly hung from the second floor of her house above the sliding door at Labor Day JoniFest 99 and is visible in the group picture from that wonderful gathering. It really is *TOO* big to use at the upcoming shows, except as part of the backdrop behind the orchestra - hey - that's an idea! :-) I think lap-sized signs are probably more appropriate for inside the concert venues. Before the show starts, if we jmdlers hold up our signs, we will be easily identified to each other. And for those of us second-row occupants, Joni will also be able to identify us during the show. I'm not sure what the story is with the first row seats. When the ticket window opened, the first person to buy was assigned second row seats. Is the first row held out for VIPs? Or left empty? Or for the press? A few weeks ago, Suze Cameron talked about the large banner that she made for A Day In The Garden being passed from show to show. I don't know what became of that idea. We had a copy editor in our office a few years ago (until they did a massive layoff) who was wonderful - she could point out the rights and wrongs of language and grammar, but would always temper it with humour and common sense. The problem with most "language police" is that they often lack humour altogether. Let's face it, like it or not, language is a living thing and, like all living things, it changes and grows. There are certain speech patterns or trendy sayings or misspellings that sometimes drive me nuts, but I try to hold that snooty anal side in check - life is too short to get hung up on what is ultimately not that important. ===== Catherine (in Toronto) catrin_of_aragon@yahoo.ca _______________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? For example, I love Bob Dylan and Billie Holiday but didn't mention them in my post of favorite careers because I've already expressed my passion for their music on this list. There are many artists that I like that some of you have never heard like The Dear Janes or Chris Stills or Moby. I also like Stevie Ray Vaughan but can listen to Barry Manilow. Sometimes I listen to Black Sabbath but then Tallis or Mozart. There are too many artists that I can honestly say that I love to listen to. My whole life revolves around music so it's only natural that when my moods change, so does my music. I'm also fortunate in that I don't tire of bands that I initially take a liking to. I can still listen to anything by Joni and never tire of it. I can sometimes listen to Hejira 5 times in one day. I will sometimes repeat Amelia 5 times in a row. And for the record, I think kd lang is superb and I like Dwight Yoakum! Johnny Cash is also a winner! There is a new Cash 3 CD set called Love, God & Murder. CD 1 contains the LOVE songs, CD 2, the songs involving GOD or SPIRITUALITY and CD 3, well, mostly songs inspired by criminals and prisoners. =) It's a treasure. Also for the record, I wasn't always this open-minded. I've come to appreciate a lot of music such as country music that I'll even listen to it...FOR PLEASURE. Slightly more than two weeks. The best part of the experience will be the excitement in my wife's face as we enter the pavillion. I got carried away. =) Careers: Stevie Wonder and Aretha Franklin are two of the most distinguished and unique. Unbelievable voices in every sense of the word. The great Mahalia Jackson as well. Ray Charles, Dr. John, Leon Russell, Billy Joel & Elton John: four very diverse piano men but equally as important for their influences on other artists. Speaking of piano men, when I was watching Win Ben Stein's Money the other night, there was a question about a jazz pianist who got his start at a Jazz at the Philharmonic concert at Carnegie Hall and formed a trio with Herb Ellis...no one could answer the question. The answer was Oscar Peterson and Ben had never heard of him. His exact quote was "I've never even heard of him. That was a really hard one". Funny, whenever I hear the words jazz & pianist together, Oscar Peterson is always my first answer. Other great careers: Carole King, Fleetwood Mac, Roy Orbison, Bruce Springsteen (not one of my faves but hey, what a career), Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Phoebe Snow, Paul Simon, Tina Turner, Loretta Lynn, Dolly Parton, B.B. King, Ruth Brown, Cliff Richards (I know, I know), Carlos Santana, Bob Marley, Eurythmics....obviously I could go on forever here... np: "The Long Black Veil" - Johnny Cash > ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 10 May 2000 14:04:11 EDT From: ZZScotty@aol.com Subject: NJC: Running into dykes Angela, responding to Catman, said "does anyone from the States see just a wee bit o humor in this?............."
