I don't how we can get early confirmation one way or the other, without someone staking out NBC studios in Burbank to see if Joni shows up or not. All I know is that she had been listed as tonight's guest on Leno, as recently as the end of last week (also in our TV guide that came in yesterday's Sunday paper), but when I went to check the Leno website again this morning, she was gone....replaced with Brad Paisley. I was looking forward to it too! I so hope it's just a matter of Leno's web page being as flaky today as his monologue. I would argue that all of Joni's songs are drawn,in some sense, from specific experience and circumstances but that they still work and are still relevant outside of the era in which they were written. The logical conclusion of David's thesis would be to confine the songs to a museum.Joni,or anybody else ,would never be able to perform the songs again if this argument were to prevail.IMHO all songs are are there to be reworked and reinterpreted. Surely that is the basis on which an album such as BSN works and why Joni recorded it. "They didn't ask VanGogh to paint a starry night again man". ACOY works in the new context precisely because it has its place in the development of a relationship, most people when in love will have been in position where they cant get enough of the person they love, sadly often just a passing phase. IMHO this is why Joni chose that particular song in that particular place. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 8 May 2000 18:24:50 EDT From: SCJoniGuy@aol.com Subject: Re: BSN tour << I've been happily lurking for about a week - this list is so lovely and erudite! Bob ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 08 May 2000 23:48:17 +0100 From: catman Subject: Rolling Stone Carly reviewNJC In the seventies, Carly Simon's albums were models of literate sanity and sexy production. Since then, Simon hasn't worked regularly in the album form she invested with so much down-to-earth sophistication, and has instead expanded into saloon pop and contemporary film and theater music. She returns with The Bedroom Tapes, offering eleven New York songs about love affairs, technology, harrowing health reversals, George Gershwin, confidence, doubt and more -- often linked by the theme of various kinds of everyday hunger. It's a bang-up Carly Simon album, engagingly sung by an artist with enough relaxed perspective to remark, "It wasn't that long ago/When you dialed a number/You got a living, breathing human being." That's from "Big Dumb Guy," a powerhouse rock-blues number; on the electric "Our Affair" and "So Many Stars," a glistening romantic consideration, Simon also pushes her music far into everyday life. She lavishes attention on words throughout the album; her balance of excellent pop thrills and writing remains singular. In "We Your Dearest Friends," a bleakly funny tune with a surging rhythm sung from an utter paranoiac's point of view, black-clad diners accuse the narrator of "thinking you're a star when it's all over." One thing is for sure, though: The Carly Simon of The Bedroom Tapes shines. (RS 841) JAMES HUNTER (Reviewer) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 08 May 2000 23:53:18 +0100 From: catman Subject: another reviewNJC One of the most enduring talents in pop music, Carly Simon is back with a fascinating, deeply revealing new album that is as much a collection of short stories as it is an album. Simon has been compared to writers like Joan Didion for her ability to zero in on urban angst, and here she proves she hasn't lost her edge when it comes to marrying adult subject matter to popular song. The album harks back to the thoughtful soft-rock sound that empowered her '70s hits. It opens with the suggestion of romance -- in the catchy "Our Affair," Simon hints at being "one little breath away/From our affair." Her singing is strong and direct. Probably the most vulnerable and beautiful song here is "So Many Stars," a very New York story that finds Simon wandering the city and wondering about the depth and reality of romance in the urban landscape. The song culminates in an emotional, chilling moment, as Simon takes us from a subway turnstile to a sense of loneliness in the universe and of the fears and expectations that come with romantic love. Simon's voice has never sounded more fiery and beautiful. The many standouts include "Cross the River," "Scar," and the in-your-face "We Your Dearest Friends," a brutally honest assessment of social climbers. Years in the making, the brave, clear-eyed THE BEDROOM TAPES was obviously a major labor of love for Simon; she has -- like nowhere before -- laid her heart and mind before the listener. In thinking about it it, they have to have had a similar impact on me the way Joni did when I first heard her, and I suppose it is some combination of the following: songwriting craft, intelligence, heart, originality, instrument chops (for me, its usually the guitar), voice quality, and then some added element of magic that makes me want to buy more of of their albums. There are only a few that have affected me this way: Shawn Colvin is at the top, the others incluce Sting, Peter Gabriel, John Gorka. Maybe Stacey Earle (Steve's sister) will be on that list. I have her first CD and love it, don't have her new one, but I plan to get it. I also love Bonnie Raitt and Emmylou Harris--though more for their great interpretations of others songs more than as writers. I saw Ben Taylor in a TV news item a few years ago - 1994 if I remember correctly - when he had written a song (or several songs) for a movie soundtrack - can't remember what movie, though. He looked exactly like both his parents - can't explain it any better than that - but sounded exactly like his father! He also said he wasn't at all interested in a career in the music industry, unless it was behind the scenes (like the movie-score). I guess he changed his mind! Oh sure, like I could resist a question like that?! My favourites are: Shona Laing - a Kiwi singer-songwriter, who also spent some time in the 70's/80's as a vocalist for Manfred Mann's Earth Band. She is a truly gifted song-writer, and very, very close to being on the same level as Joni, as far as I'm concerned. Albums - 7 (100%) CSN - I've always loved these guys - I'm a sucker for good harmony, but I must admit, I prefer their earlier work. Albums - 47 - honestly - (100% - collectively and individually, and including Buffalo Springfield, but not Byrds or Hollies). Neil Young - I left him out of CSN, since I think they're very different with him - not better mind you, just different. Great song-writer. Albums - 15. Bonnie Raitt - I love women that play electric guitar, especially this well! Great bluesy voice too, and although she doesn't sing too many of her own songs, she does wonders with other people's. Albums - 15 (100%) Carole King - the first artist I really "clicked" with, at the tender age of 11! Don't listen to her as much these days, but Tapestry is a must-have in any collection. Albums - 18 (100%) And ranking slightly lower: James Taylor - another great songwriter. Don't have as many albums of his, but love him just the same, especially live. He has a great, very dry sense of humour! Albums - 12. Janis Joplin - what a voice! Albums - 9, including the box-set (100% I think) Dave Dobbyn - another Kiwi singer-songwriter, and hugely under-appreciated. In my view, 10 times better than Neil Finn (of Crowded House). Albums - 4. Honourable mention: The Doors - Albums 11 (100% I think) Melissa Etheridge - didn't like her at first, but I'm warming slowly. Albums - 3 Fleetwood Mac - with the Stevie/Lindsay factor. Albums - 11 Stevie Nicks - incredible woman. Albums - 5 (100%) Indigo Girls - great lyrics, and great harmonies. Albums - 4 I could go on for hours. There are a huge number of artists in my collection, and for some reason, when I find an artist I like, I have to buy all their albums as soon as possible, and find out the most intimate details of their lives! But I can honestly say, I don't dislike any album by any of the artists I've mentioned. They all have redeeming features! Anyway, I didn't mean to dribble on for this long - sorry! I better stop, or I'll be late for the Trivia Quiz I'm going to at a local bar tonight. Question last week - "How many of the Monkees were British?" After the discussions we had here lately, I wish they'd asked something a little tougher. I'm sure I'd have remembered!
