Too bad, it was mired in controversy as she was quoted out of context about "Zionist hoodlums" (or maybe she did mean what they claim she meant). In almost all films she appears, she always elevates the proceedings. Watch how MISSION IMPOSSIBLE achieve a grandeur when she appeared. Tom Cruise seems to huff and puff in his acting just to keep pace with her. Or how about her cameo in SMILLA'S SENSE OF SNOW and even MOTHER'S BOYS. I like her MRS DALLOWAY best. "Definitely Like many of the songs on, the Chieftains album, Tears of Stone in fact, I started out singing that kind of song but, as a performer in clubs, I felt I needed some levity, so I started spinning yarns on stage." in context it sounds more like she was referring to Irish folk music as an example of the 'minor-key' melencholy mood that was quite pronounced in the the popular 60's folk... Peter, Paul and Mary come to mind almost immediately. actually, if you think about it, this affect came out in her early 'folky' music... Nathan La Franeer? Roses Blue? Songs to Aging Children Come? I Think I Understand? all definitely minor-chord-sorrowful musically, it's also interesting to note that, aside from Little Green, there wasn't as much of this in her live music prior to her recording of STAS. this may be further related to something else... as one of those whiney folkies I can tell you that following the performing of one of these tear-jerkers, the general mood of your audience, if you did your job, is pensive... not the best time for a long bout of tuning, if you catch my drift. what I'm saying is that what she states in the interview, although true, I'm sure, wasn't the only reason she 'started spinning yarns on stage'... remember that, unlike P,P & M, or Phil Ochs or Gordon Lightfoot or other folkies, Joni always faced that spectre that, at one point, almost caused her to give up performing altogether... continuous retuning. it's interesting to listen to the consecutive songs on the second fret recordings in this light... the stage patter was well rehersed and virtually flawless in that you never really noticed the transitions... much easier to cover for with a bit of levity and yarn spinning. ;o) >'When Johnny Comes Marching Home' which, I believe was Irish in origin.> That tune in Ireland is known as "Johnny I Hardly Knew You". I don't know which version came first.> yup, that's it! "...for my darlin' dear, ye looked so queer, Johnny, we hardly knew ya" oh, it was definitely written in Ireland and adapted in the US at the time of the civil war... much as 'Stewball' was from the (I think) British 'Skewball'... pat Angelfire for your free web-based e-mail. http://www.angelfire.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Apr 2000 09:50:57 -0500 From: Steve Polifka Subject: corbiss.com (NJC) Hey! I've missed reading a lot of posts lately, but I noticed a brief mention about a pre-concert gathering. Can someone tell me where and when it is -- I would love to meet your faces! Fortunately, I have been overly busy with gigs this month and last. Unfortunately, I don't have time to pore through all the posts. However, I noticed Elian Gonzalez is a subject on the list. It's quite simple. He belongs with his father. I'm a divorced father who has seen other divorced fathers have their children wrenched away from them by vengeful ex-wives and a corrupt and unfair domestic relations system. I've seen the harm a child suffers when a parent is forcibly removed from his or her life. The rights of a responsible father (or mother) should never be in question. Elian has but one parent now, and no voice from heaven to hell has a right to separate them. It's not about politics -- it's about supreme parental rights. How would any of you feel if your son or daughter was whisked away by "relatives"? I only wish that the US government would pay as much attention to the thousands upon thousands of American fathers who have no legal access to their children. I'm very proud of you. You've given us, your loyal fans, courageous, bold music spanning several genres. You can sing phrases like Frank Sinatra, creating a different interpretation each time you sing. I'm really psyched about this tour coming up because you'll see your own fans, not share the house with a bunch of rowdies. You ARE a headliner and I'm very glad to see you stepping into the spotlight again. When I think back on how wonderful your "Shadows and Light" concert is on video, I know that you'll be fan-damn-tastic this time out too. Larry did a great job of presenting your music on the TNT Tribute show. They sounded really good, didn't they? Here's how I came to love your music. I was about 17 when "Deja vu" came out. The best song on the album, the huge hit, was Woodstock. I always thought of it as an anthem- a call to arms sortof. I found it inspiring. Very inspiring. Then I found out that it was yours. And that you'd written "Both Sides Now" and I thought, "Here is another great songwriter." Of course there were a lot of great art-rock songs in that brief but glorious period. Anyway, my dad used to play Stan Getz, Dave Brubeck, Ramsey Lewis, and Hendricks, Lambert and Ross. When you put "Twisted" on the end of "Court and Spark", you really broke through to me. I thought, "THIS WOMAN GETS IT !!" Like there are no boundaries. I mean, the kids I went to school with in suburban Ohio weren't much into music. If they were it was top 40 exclusively. And yet here you were, saying "BOTH camps at once! Jazz, & art songs together." It seemed like you were dipping your toe into jazz, or "stuff that SWINGS" as my Dad would say. It seemed to me that you were showing us your hand so to speak, and it was very promising. The albums that followed blew me away. You invented world music! At least in _my_ life you did. Eventually I stopped buying Beatles albums- stopping short of owning them all. I figured, how many skiffle style albums do I really need? So I didn't go all of the way back. I stopped buying Dylan albums. I mean, he is an innovator and much of it is really really brilliant. But how many Bob-as-Christian albums do I need to buy? Well, some but not all. I certainly don't need every one. Now your catalog is something else. I own all 21 albums. Each of them is so different from its predecessor that it's hard to believe that just one person masterminded them all! And there have been a core of fans buying your albums all along. How many people have their entire catalog still in print? Not many I'll bet. Say what you will about Reprise, they have done an excellent job of making the new generation of CDs- those hdcd versions- sound great and present _your_ talents with respect. That's good. And I want you to know that even when the press was criticizing this project or that, your fans were quietly buying into where ever you were taking us. Some of us have been with you for a long time, beaming with pride at this phrase or that guitar part. Even on albums that were portrayed in the press as failures. For example, I love "The Dry Cleaner From Des Moines". I think your funniest line ever is, "The Dry Cleaner from Des Moines Could put a coin In the door of the john And make 20 to 1." Hilarious! Your phrasing on that album is great! I love Mingus. So there it is. A fan letter to you, Joni. You are bigger than Dylan and the Beatles in my life. Thank you. All the best, Jim L'Hommedieu near Cincinnati ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Apr 2000 15:10:57 -0700 From: "James L. Leonard" Subject: Introduction Hi, everyone. I've been lurking for about a month, and am really enjoying receiving the digest. I've been a serious Joni devotee since the release of Blue. I'd listened to the first three albums, and I'd loved them, too, but Blue *really* killed me. Since then, I've been there every step of the way, buying each new album upon release. My favorite album is *still* Hejira, which has tremendous sentimental value to me in addition to the fact that it's a masterpiece, but I hold most of the albums in *very* high regard. I remember hearing Hejira for the first time and thinking, "Wow, wouldn't it be great to hear Pat Metheny solo on these songs, seeing as how Jaco is here (he and Pat were friends), and Joni's electric is getting a similar sound to Pat's?" Then, not long after the outstanding Don Juan's Reckless Daughter and Mingus projects (both *still* featuring Jaco), there was Shadows And Light...a dream come true...Joni with Pat and Jaco and Lyle Mays and Michael Brecker and Don Alias. There *was* one bumpy patch in my "relationship" with Joni. I'd never had the opportunity to see her live before she appeared on the Boston Common in support of Wild Things Run Fast in the mid-'80s. I was *there* and, boy, was I excited! Finally!!! I was going to see/hear Joni live!!! She came out and began a beautiful version of "Song For Sharon." I was *beside* myself!!! I never expected to hear *that* song, much less expected her to *open* with it. I was in heaven!!! Anyway, about 1/2 way through the song, Joni walked off stage in what I can only describe (to this day) as a "hissy fit." We in the audience were shocked, and sat there dumbfounded with our mouths open. I never did know what had upset Joni, but I can only image it was something unrelated to the concert. She finally *did* re-emerge, about an hour later, after we'd all waited patiently, only to play "Chinese Cafe" and then split, saying something like "Come back and see me sometime when the lighting is good." Was anyone else there? Do you have any idea what happened that night? I always have continued to wonder... It took awhile for me to feel good about Joni again, but not *too* long. :-) I was right there again when Dog Eat Dog was released, and Chalkmark In A Rainstorm, and...well, you get the idea. SCJoniGuy has been encouraging me to post, so I thought I'd take this time to say hello. I contacted him awhile back and have since been blessed with his Joni Covers Vols. 1 and 2 (and they're absolutely wonderful). I've really enjoyed reading everyone's reactions to the Tribute on TNT, the recent discussion of folk music traditions vis a vis "The Silky Veils Of Ardor," musings on the Today Show and Rosie interviews, reviews of the fantastic new album, etc. I wish Joni was performing nearby on the upcoming tour (grovel: can anyone set me up with 2 unwanted tix to West Palm Beach, FL, her closest stop?). I'd love to hear her perform the new album, with the orchestra in tow. I lost it when she sang "Both Sides Now" at the Tribute. Anyway, I'm a "dyed in the wool" fan(atic). I also enjoy many other artists and many styles of music. For the past twenty-five years or so I've primarily devoted my listening hours to the study of jazz, but I don't neglect my other interests. :) "Boston Jim" (who moved to Tampa) NP: Ethel Ennis - "For Free" ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Apr 2000 14:21:30 -0500 From: Mark Domyancich Subject: Re: Introduction Welcome to the list James! I think that she recorded a Joni song only to learn that it was Nancy Wilson of Heart (not that there is anything wrong with Heart or NW of Heart). Then Mabel Mercer. True, I know for a fact she has recorded Joni, but, alas, all but her Cole Porter are out of print. Not impossible to find, but probably difficult. In my search for Ms. Mercer (I have not given up yet), I came across what must be the strangest recording of a Joni song. And if not the strangest, certainly one that you wouldn't particularly want or need to hear. DRUM ROLL. . .Adrienne Barbeau singing I Had A King. And yes Bob, you will be receiving a copy of Ms. Barbeau singing I Had A King. I simply couldn't pass this up. Now if you are like me, you are probably wondering how Ms. Barbeau (Maude's daughter, for those of you who are too young to remember) got this CD produced (she also sings Judy Collins' My Father). Well, it seems that Ms. Barbeau is married to Billy Van Zandt, the brother of Steven "Stevie" Van Zandt of the E Street Band (and the Sopranos). In my searches, I have also come across the fact that Doris Day recorded BSN and I am trying to dig this one up for you too Bob. Hugs, Ashara www.photon.net/lightnet ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Apr 2000 18:53:34 -0500 From: Vince Lavieri Subject: NJC Chicago Tribune I get the Chicago Tribune by mail. The Trib is one of the nation's most conservative newspapers. I get the Trib for the features (its rock writer, Greg Kot, loves Joni), sports, news, and local stories and such. Also, my grandmother (an arch conservative Republican) contributed to the Trib regularly. It has never endorsed a Democrat for president, and is Henry Hyde's staunchest defender in the mainstream media (as well as Hyde's hometown paper). It has long supported the embargo against Cuba and is very supportive of the Cuban diaspora in the US. Is this conservative enough for you? It comes in the mail and I get it anywhere from three to seven days late. Today I received the paper from last Thursday, 20 April... and was very struck by the lead editorial. Being from last Thursday, it thus was written and printed two days before Elian was rescued. I cannot send the whole editorial but those who have those capabilities can check it out. Let me quote a part of the Republican, conservative Chicago Tribune editorial from two days prior to Elian's rescue: "Unfortunately, no court order can maintain the status quo perfectly, and there are changes occurring beneath the surface of this case that should be profoundly deleterious to Elian and to some cherished principles of American life and law. Quite simply, a child of highly impressionable age is being deprived of contact with his parent. And no less important, a parent against whom there is no evidence of abuse or neglect is being deprived of contact with and control over his child. "Those are truly awesome facts - and all the more so when the essentially political reasons for this separation are considered. "Elian Gonzalez, who in the last five months has endured more trauma and psychological whiplash than most children do in a lifetime, is presumed mature enough to have a 'well-founded fear of persecution' in his native country and so is entitled to an asylum hearing. Perhaps we could hear also what brand of Scotch he prefers, and whether he likes it neat or on the rocks? "And his father, Juan Miguel Gonzalez, because he has refused (so far) to disavow his native land, is subjected to the worst torment a parent can suffer: denial of the company of his child. Makes you wonder: is every Cuban parent, by definition, unworthy to be a parent? "The government can't let him leave even if his father wants him to. So there's no reason now for his father not to have immediate custody of him at that house in the Washington suburbs where he has been staying. "Ms. Reno, make it happen." Janet Reno made it happen. I am glad that she did. It is very clear that the boy would never have been returned to his father by the Miami family. They were playing with Elian for their own fame and political purposes. Where was Elian found? Not in his own bed, asleep at 5 a.m., but in the closet of his aunt, with the fisherman, with an AP photographer in the bedroom. (Sounds like a game of Clue...) I suspect now he is sleeping in his own bed without the national press in the bedroom. Janet Reno made it happen. The Senate wants hearings on Elian next week. They didn't have hearings on Columbine, or on a six year old shooting and killing a six year old in Michigan, and the shootings at the DC zoo haven't been noticed by Trent Lott and the Republicans in the US Senate - but they will hold hearings on Elian. I guess the voting strength of the Cuban community in Florida, a key electoral state in the November elections, makes the return of a Cuban boy to his father more important than American children shooting and killing American children - at least to the US Senate. I think your funniest line ever is, "The Dry Cleaner from Des Moines Could put a coin In the door of the john And make 20 to 1." Hilarious! Your phrasing on that album is great! I love Mingus. >> I couldn't agree more. I could write a book about Dry Cleaner From Des Moines--well, I couldn't, but I could almost write a book about how brilliant I think it is. I constantly to this day walk around town and run that song through my head and think: unbelievably brilliant, clever, witty, inspired--genuis! Sometimes I think it is the best. But then of course there is no best--but for its "genre" (the jazz ditty?), I suspect, the writing is among the very very very most inspired. And it is a masterpiece among joni's many. I am so glad someone has singled out this song! My many friends don't get it--not that many of them get joni, sadly, although I have begun to find more and more who do. And, I haven't mentioned this since my return to the list but, on the night of the tribute's telecast, my best friend who also happens to be a long-time Joni naysayer and doesn't-get-her, called me up and said "Raymond, I finally understand. Next time I come over you have to line up all her CD's and play them for me as you have been trying to do for all these years." I couldn't believe my ears. I couldn't believe it, and even now I walk around and I am like "Jeff likes Joni now? Miracles never cease." But then again, it's long overdue. By the way Jim, great letter. Really. The parts about your father and also about Joni's inventing world music--and the distinction's between her and the other great heavyweights of her time are all right on. She knows it, I know it, and you know it too obviously enough. And one more bit of coin here: I have on occasion been annoyed or put off by Joni's "arrogance" but somehow lately I have turned a bit--maybe because she isn't quite as strident, I don't know...anyway, I always think, "Well, you know, she's right--mostly she's right." One thing that sort of thrilled me in a very particular way was when they asked her about the great songwriters of her era and she said something like "I think you have to look at me and at Dylan." She may have thrown in something about Leonard Cohen but she qualified that somehow...well, what was so cool about that is that there are a lot of great musicians and a lot of great songs out there--great ones, amazing ones. But she understood somehow how their work somehow stood apart, apart and above, if you will. Even now, for all of my thinking and re-thinking about it, it remains a mystery to me, but it is a mystery I believe deeply. And there's a thrill in that. OK--I shut up now. ray ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Apr 2000 20:35:42 EDT From: Wolfebite@aol.com Subject: my mom and joni (a story w/out real JC) hey y'all back from kentucky visiting with kin... my mom knows of my love for joni, although she said she wouldn't know a joni song if it hit her. anyhooo- she watched the TNT special of her own accord. i didn't tell her about it cuz i didn't think she had cable or that she really wouldn't be interested. she didn't tell me that she knew about it cuz she knew that i didn't have cable, and that i would pine away in sorrow... little did she know the constancy and resourcefulness of this community- alerting everyone- encouraging us to seek out cable...
