That disclaimer aside, I must point out that "freedom" is a very nebulous term that has been defined in many different ways in the history of liberal (I use that word in the classical, not contemporary ideological, sense) thought. There are, of course, many ways in which the U.S. sociopolitical system ensures the greatest freedom in the world. There are others in which even the vile, self-absorbed, and repressive Castro regime is better than ours. As an example, much hay is often made in LGBT/AIDS circles of the HIV "concentration camps" into which Castro sequestered HIV+ Cubans. After he wised up and realized such mandatory isolation was not necessary for public health, Castro declared the inmates/patients free to go. Almost none did. Why? Because they were receiving top-notch medical care. Indeed, Cubans have a guaranteed access to quality health care and other social services far exceeding what many of our own "free" Americans can find, and many who could leave for that reason, and other related ones, do not. This is important because opportunities to take command of one's life--through education, health care, housing, employment, etc.--are an important factor in some conceptions of freedom. These are not un-American conceptions, either. Civil Rights laws and post-secondary education aid are just two examples of programs most Americans believe in precisely because they address this conception of freedom. I often think of this as freedom "to"--freedom to attempt, achieve, and pursue certaain goals. There is no argument that under other definitions of freedom--those addressing freedom "from" government thought control, regulation, etc., the Castro regime fails to an unfathomable degree. But the human rights hierarchy on which we place the US and Cuba (and Indonesia, Afghanistan, the former USSR--basically everywhere) is not as clearcut as we would like it to be. Many interests--some national, some, as in the case of Cuba, dominated by small but organized American groups--have shaped the ways we view this hierarchy and countries' positions on it in ways that are not necessarily inaccurate, but definitely unnuanced and incomplete. - --Michael - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- "Intellects do not believe in God But they fear us just the same." - --Erykah Badu, "On and On" On Tue, 25 Apr 2000, Lori Fye wrote: > Marcel, you astutely observed: > > > The bottom line is will Elian be returned to the > > custody of his father in his fathers home or will he > > go to this government reindoctrination facility. At the end of the line one got to meet with a church VIP who could supposedly help out. By the time I got to this guy, Kakki had gone back to her car with some wonderful photographic device that someone lent her to shoot the concert with, and I couldn't remember what to ask the VIP. Second, there was much discussion around the dinner table about the TNT special. My sister thought it was "too poignant." And she objected to all the photographs of Joni smoking, because "that's what ruined her voice." And she thought none of the performers did justice to the songs. Meggie had to leave the room during Diane Krall, she hated it so much. (Meggie is a soprano and likes other sopranos). My sister loved Joni Mitchell up through Hejira, then gave her up. I don't know if Joni got weird or my sister got lazy. I think at some point her taste got frozen. I look at their CD collection and it looks like "Best of the Sixties" by Ronco!! Here is what is in the book: Old paint on canvas, as it ages, sometimes becomes transparent. When that happens it is possible, in some pictures, to see the original lines: a tree will show through a woman's dress, a child makes way for a dog, a large boat is no longer on an open sea. That is called pentimento because the painter "repented," changed his mind. Perhaps it would be as well to say that the old conception, replaced by a later choice, is a way of seeing and then seeing again. The voice-over at the beginning of 'Julia' is pretty much the same with some slight alteration. The last sentence was cut in the film. > > Although it's been over twenty years since I read the book, the above > doesn't sound like the full quote from the book. Is it? Does anyone > know / remember? And while we're on the subject, did anyone ever figure > out who Julia was, from which high society East coast family? MG was the only one who seems to have picked up on my quip about Mary McCarthy. She was an author who helped ignite a huge brou-ha-ha about the veracity of Lillian Hellman's memoirs. McCarthy appeared on the Dick Cavett show sometime in the late 70's, I believe and basically said of Ms. Hellman that 'everything she writes is a lie including 'and' & 'the'. Hellman was on the phone to Dick Cavett the very next day demanding to know why he didn't defend her. Anyway one of McCarthy's assertions was that the whole Julia story was a complete fabrication designed to make Hellman into some kind of hero. There was also speculation that Hellman got the idea for Julia from the life of a woman named Muriel Gardner who had worked in the Resistance in Europe during WWII and publised a memoir on her experience called 'Code Name Mary'. Hellman never divulged who the 'real' Julia was, causing more accusations that the whole story was a lie. She brought a slander suit against McCarthy but I don't think it came to trial before Hellman's death. I still don't know what I believe as far as Julia is concerned. Whether it's true or not, it's a great story both on the page and on film. Hellman published a total of 3 books of memoirs. The third was called 'Scoundrel Time' and chronicles her appearance before the HUAC during the McCarthy (Sen. Joseph McCarthy that is, not Mary) witch hunts. She expressed a great deal of bitterness toward the liberal community in the US for not doing more to defend and help the victims of Sen. McCarthy and named more than a few names of people she felt had acted in a less than honorable or courageous way. My feeling is that during the Reagan years when the political climate in the country swung decidedly to the right, a lot of people who had felt burned by Hellman's assertions in 'Scoundrel Time' decided it was payback time and jumped on the Mary McCarthy bandwagon. I have read several biographies of Hellman published since then and most of them are very unflattering. They paint her as a money-grubbing harpy who made up whatever she needed to make herself look good. Personally I find it hard to believe that the woman who wrote 'The Little Foxes' and 'The Children's Hour' was this type of person. I think Lillian really was a classic 'only child' and was probably hell on wheels if crossed or displeased. Her memoirs admit as much. But I still find it hard to believe that she was completely unscrupulous and a liar. > > BTW, Lillian Hellman was one of the four women I had always wanted to > meet. Her long hair was flicked into the air by the lingering winds. I knew her by her smile. Her words I have read for some time. Jealous, I have been, that I don't share her popularity nor her ability to turn a phrase. She laughed when she saw me. Her laugh shines the L.A. sky like a Hollywood kleg light. She brought me cherished gifts. Things I would never have owned. Things most will never have. We talked of music. We talked of friends. We talked of people we thought we knew. She listened intently to my stories of woe. My stories of love lost and love gained. My favorite topic. Hers too. She lead me down new aisles. New thought paths I have never known. She makes music she shares her wisdom freely. In my world she is a legend. I felt humbled that she would take me into her world. For even one evening. She is the only L.A. Lady I have met that became a real friend over two glasses of wine. Maybe this is old news to many or most of you long time surfers, but here's a link to a site with 126 pictures of Joni. Some are Diltz's, but not all, and some taken in her recording studio that I've never seen before. There's one with make-up guy Paul Starr (a mystery man from the tribute) too. Oh, and one from the Halloween party where Joni dressed up ala DJRD. ;-) http://www.corbis.com Hope some of these will help Steve P. with his cd artwork! (Hi Steve!)
