I am wondering about that too -- if Joni listens to ALL the recordings of other artists to her songs. I would be curious and overeager to know whose version she likes the most. When I mention Joni to friends here in Manila, its (1) they do not know much about her except her song "Both Sides Now", (2) they mix her up with either Judy Collins or Joan Baez, or (3) they heard how bitchy she can be. The last one surprised me a bit because while I know Joni said nasty things about other artists, I wouldn't think of THAT as Joni's trademark. When I asked further for them to explain more, they remembered how Joni "dismissed" Alanis Morrissette's songwriting skills when an interviewer asked Joni about Alanis. Most times, the only time they ever got a listen to Joni was when her vocal was integrated in Janet Jackson's VELVET ROPE album, or when her BYT version was in the "Friends" and "Practical Magic soundtracks. Of all artists who covered Joni songs, I like: Janis Siegel - River Brian Kennedy - A Case of You Tori Amos - A Case of You and.... the legendary Mabel Mercer - Both Sides Now (from a cassette tape that is now missing) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 19 Apr 2000 00:46:13 -0700 From: "Kakki" Subject: Re: Filling Shoes Phil wrote: > i believe kakki said bob sheppard can fill wayne shorter's >shoes. sorry, but NOBODY fills wayne shorter's shoes. he >can play the parts, but fill wayne's shoes-never. WHOA! My exact quote was "who can very capably fill Wayne Shorter's shoes" meaning, OF COURSE, "in a pinch", "when Wayne can't be there and we need a good sax player" blah, blah, etc. I never meant that he could *replace* Wayne or surpasses or is equally interchangeable with Wayne. No one can replace Wayne Shorter when it comes to Joni songs. But for whatever reason, he wasn't there and I was really happy to see Bob Sheppard was the one chosen to "fill" in. I used to be a great RT fan, but now I don't value him as much as I did. (Since I discovered Lal Waterson's albums last year, I've listened to him much less.) I admire his consistency, and he has a wicked sense of humor, and he is a phenomenal guitar player, without a doubt -- and his songs are excellently crafted, but a lot of them seem empty to me and the unending pathos of so many of them is a bit much. I think he lacks vision a little bit (and I don't think there's much development or evolution from album to album, lyrically). His songs are certainly masculine (in style, and in point of view), but the description "gentle" is an surprising one to me because so many of his songs (especially post-Linda) are so harsh and bitter, sometimes downright nasty -- I recognize it was applied to his *performance*, though. There are some aspects of his songs and songwriting that really don't sit right with me when I think about it. This is not meant to dissuade anyone from checking him out. I think he's well worth investigating. He's very enjoyable. Richard and Linda's "Shoot Out the Lights" and "I Want To See the Bright Lights Tonight" are great albums. My favorite of his solo work is "Rumor and Sigh" (it has some awful, awful clunkers, but some terrific songs as well). - --David ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 19 Apr 2000 01:30:38 -0700 From: "Kakki" Subject: Re: Delta Dash from L.A. Boy, can I relate to this! I am one of the world's larger people, you know, the sort of person that people describe as having a great personality! But I hate shopping for clothes for precisely the reason Catherine mentions. The average dress size for all NZ women is about a 16-18 (pretty much the same as US sizing), and I'm bigger than that, but the average size in the shops is a 12. I get so pissed off when I walk into a clothes shops with friends, and get that "what the hell do you think YOU'RE doing in here" look of derision from the shop assistants. Mind you, I do admit that I rarely, if ever purchase, or attempt to purchase women's clothing (other than the "required" items)! I usually wear jeans (I don't own any skirts or dresses) and I buy most of my clothes from men's stores. Or I wear sports clothing (sweatshirts/polo shirts/t-shirts, etc.) which are unisex anyway. Ever since the first time I heard Carey on Blue eons ago, I always thought it was the FUN song on a very deep album but after hearing Cyndi Lauper's version I'm in awe. Cyndi really did an incredible job. Another thing I noticed was (and I can't verify this) it seemed like in every song there was a lyric flub of some sort (with the exception of Amelia) which attests to the gymnastics involved in getting the poetic balance right. Take one syllable out and it unravels ... (forgive me, I'm a purist) but Shawn and Mary's version of Amelia was reverent and beautiful. Another high point for me. And here is the observation that amazed me more than anything else. Even though all these artists are renowned for their perfect pipes NO ONE hit the highs like Joni. kd sustained breath to mounting applause but hitting some of the notes in HELP ME was hard for her (as she said in the pre-show comments). wow, and I consider kd one of the most amazing singers around. I love her!! She can wear anything she wants as far as I'm concerned. Although songs from her later albums were truly missed, I can completely understand these artists sticking to the 70s material while performing in front of Joni. Could anyone really get up and do a rendition of Magdalene Laundries or Slouching Toward Bethlehem or even My Secret Place? I'm sure if Peter Gabriel was there he would have picked something like this to play and would have done a GREAT job, but we could do 15 digests on our fantasy tributes!! :-) For the first half of the tribute when Diana Krall was sitting in Joni's box I kept thinking it was Kilauren!! Then I realized who it was. Her version of A Case of You was giving me the willies. BEAUTIFUL!! Of course, having Joni's band there was a brilliant idea. Who else could have played this stuff? I loved that Greg Leisz was playing pedal steel. After the '98 tour I insist on hearing him play on BLACK CROW. Richard Thompson was magnificent. JT was JT. He was the heart of Blue and it was a given that he would play something from that album. River was a beautiful choice. Just one more thing before I end. I want to personally thank Rose from NJ for thanking Joni at the tribute for what she did for Wally. Even before changing my life with her music and being the incredible renaissance woman and hero example she is, I love her and her big heart for the way she appreciated Wally when he was fighting so hard for his life. I could start crying thinking about it. THANKS for saying what we would have said if we had the chance. ( can't say why i think like i do, but can say how i think. ) i play some. and it is so hard for me to play well. it is so hard to execute an acoustic guitar with notes and scales as opposed to chords. it's hard to express the creativity first, but that is way simple compared to making it clean and sound good. and i thought this guy thompson was as clean a player as i have ever heard. he executed. i also really liked what he did with woodstock. aside from the two songs he did at the show, i have heard nothing of him, so i can't really compare notes. but he impressed me tremendously and i can't wait to hear more of him. perhaps that makes my comment more understandable for you. pat ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 19 Apr 2000 11:14:21 -0500 From: "Mike Hicks" Subject: Grace There are some on the Fulton list that would like to see the same tribute for Grace Slick. Well being new on the list, that was like walking into a party and farting with there being no dog to blame it on. I don't need to blame anything on anybody as I take responcibility for what I wrote. When I first heard the album in 1976 it blew me away and was one of the causes of me picking up the guitar. Now, I wanted to learn about this person who wrote the most incredible piece of music I had ever heard. ( it still is ) One article I read stated how she "got in her car and drove across country with a guitar kept in spanish tunning and composed the songs along her journey". The articile aslo stated that she didn't want to deal with guitar necks warping and needed to cleanse herself. It also got into mentioning her tunnings. As I was starting to learn the guitar all these terms were new to me, Spanish tunning, alternate tunnings, and mostly warping guitar necks. The article made a profound impression in my life as all these things were new and I had to find out about all this. So all this time I had an image of Joni driving around the country in a beamer with a credit card and a guitar in standard tunning. How accurate was the article, I don't know, but there is a process known as re-working. I'm sorry that I seemed to offend a certain person that totally went off on me, but I am happy to be in a room with people so passionate about Joni. What was in that article gave me such a yearning to understand the guitar that I am a music teacher now and always use Joni's stuff in my lessons.( as well as others ) I am always learning and one thing I have learned from both my students and my son, is that when they come to me with wrong information I ask where they got it from before I correct it or yell at them. Although the domain name dispute rages on, the new site is now accessible (using a bit of trickery) at http://www.jmdl.com. Like Sue said, the new site features new, heavy-duty search capabilities - a vast improvement over the previous search function. For example, the 278 (and still growing...) guitar tabs featured on the site can be viewed by author, tuning, album, song, generic tuning, etc... The four guitarists - Sue, Marian, Howard, and Mark - have worked very hard and put together simply the best guitar site on the internet. Also, the article database now numbers 459 titles and is growing all the time. You can search through the articles by author, publication, date, month, year, or type. And you can do word and phrase searches too. There's lots more to look at - including new, improved voting booths to cast your vote for your favorite songs and albums. Wake the kids!
