We used to get it late at night, and it was some sort of Aussie soap, and it was really cheesy but DAMN, it was addicting. Everyone I know would sit up until 1 am and watch it. I really don't remember what it was about exactly, except for one dude who was always training for this Iron Man event thing, and this rich girl Torrie had this ugly punk looking friend who would sneer all the time, and Olivia Newton John's ex-hubby had something to do with the show, and they had the catchiest theme song of all-time. So, anyway, is this show still on there, or was it some really old thing that the local station bought randomly? You poor thing. Fancy having Paradise Beach inflicted on poor Canadians! I mean, I know Aus has exported some terrible things to NZ, and we've reciprocated a few times ;o) but this show has to go down in history as one of the worst soap operas-come-teenybopper serials of all time! It was awful! Matt Lattanzi (Olivia's ex - and I must get bonus points for remembering his name, even if I can't spell it) was pretty bad too - he played a balding photographer (I think). I think it was filmed back when they were together and living in Australia. I seem to remember the show was canned after one season, or maybe one and a half. Some terrible acting. I don't remember seeing any of the cast in anything else since, Matt included, except one woman who got a part in "Water Rats" - one of my favourite shows. Actually I watched it at the start, because Australia has produced some absolutely wonderful series, like Water Rats, so I was anticipating something great! I was mistaken. Cheesy? If you're talking about the most stinky, green, mouldy, stilton-like cheese imaginable, then yes, it was cheesy. Or you could also compare it to the slices of over-processed fluorescent orange plastic that those in the US call cheese (not like a great Kiwi cheddar)! Can't bring myself to think about it any more! Hell P.S. I DO buy the magazines for the crosswords, honestly (although the "hint of the week" about putting scraps of soap into the ends of pantihose to use when you come in from gardening is very sound advice!) _______________________________ "I don't believe in livin' in the middle with available extremes" - Carole King hell@ihug.co.nz ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 18 Apr 2000 05:03:46 -0300 From: "Wally Kairuz" Subject: levitating in the andes NJC and it was true, though! i spent four days living with a community of healers and shamans in the southern argentine andes. they make their home near the glaciers. i was invited by one of the shamans who had seen my astral chart and recognized me as one of them [?!]. it was a very complex experience that combined the sublime with the ridiculous. and no, i didn't levitate -- but i seemed to be able to do stuff that impressed some of the witches and wizards. well, why not! wallyk john, if you want to know more, we can go private on this. my reputation as a screwball is already very bad as it is. - ----- Mensaje original ----- De: "john low" Para: CC: Enviado: Martes 18 de Abril de 2000 04:38 Asunto: Plea for urgent help now NJC > Wally K. > Greetings! > Those "levitating mountain-dwelling wizards" sound mighty interesting. > I'd love to hear more when you get the time. > John (in Sydney) > > __________________________________________________________________ > Get your free Australian email account at http://www.start.com.au > > ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 18 Apr 2000 10:16:21 +0100 From: catman Subject: Re: tribute reaction (VLJC) > > P.S. The only times I dress in a jacket shirt and trousers and proper shoes(as opposed to pumps-trainers) is when i am showing the dogs and when i taking a church service. No one tells me o do this. I do it for the dog show because my dog is well presented and I want to compliment her. It completes the picture, for me. The church I do it because it adds something in the mind of the congregation. She is considered as a "megastar" because of her larger-than-life persona (she endorses products and those products sell well after her endorsement, she is a producer, and her life is fodder for gossip-hungry tabloids). She is 33 years old (I think) but is already a pop culture icon. Although I am not a big fan of her, I included her version of Joni's BSN to Bob's project at the insistence of a friend (who is obviously a fan... no... a fanatic). BSN is included in Sharon's latest "When I Love" album and because she is as popular as the Philippine President, I am glad that BSN will be embraced by her legions of fans and will continue to be popular. I am glad that Kakki likes her version of BSN. So does millions of Filipinos. I don't care what they were wearing or even if they sounded all that great (I'm not a Bryan Adams fan either!), I was mostly just so happy to see so many give tribute to Joni that I was over-whelmed. KD respects Joni or she wouldn't have been on the show, period. Who really cares what she was wearing? Joni doesn't I'm sure. I loved all the performances but really thought Cyndi Lauper's was the best. For the lister who stated they were glad to hear her "real" voice," you should get some of Cyndi's albums from the '90s. They are wonderful, a totally different Cyndi than one thinks of from the '80s. I also loved Colvin and Carpenter's duets as well as Dianna Krall's A CASE OF YOU! I love Cassandra Wilson and I must say that I like her version of BLACK CROW better than Thompson's. I was over-joyed throughout the show. "Hey I'm Not So Bad After All!" Award -- Elton John, who like me, got caught in the octave shift that plagues me whenever I try to sing Joni! ;-) Still a fine rendition. Best Joni Blissed-Out Shot -- During Thompson's "Woodstock". Please God, if You're listening ... let those two make an album once this symphonic trilogy is finished ... I shall NOT stop asking you. Most Adventerous Interpretation -- Though Cassandra showed plain as day that 'Mingus' was, afterall, a free jazz album, and Sweet Honey came darned close to proving that "Circle Game" and "The Tenth World" are actually the same song -- this one goes to Richard Thompson's "Black Crow." Jesus, what a tour de force. I'm still stunned. I'm gonna go way out on a limb here, and say that what Jaco did for the bassline, Thompson's done for the guitar solo -- whether you get it or you don't, you can't honestly say you've EVER heard the instrument played like that before. Anyway, Joni doesn't get a penny from BSN (except songwriting royalties) until Reprise has recouped all its costs, and that ain't going to happen for awhile, IMHO. And that includes all the costs for those advertising displays, listening stations at Borders, etc., etc. Major label record releases can be like Hollywood movies - the accountants can see to it that there is never any profit to be shared out. ######################################################### Steve Dulson Costa Mesa CA steve@psitech.com "The Tinker's Own" http://www.tinkersown.com "Southern California Dulcimer Heritage" http://members.aol.com/scdulcimer/ "The Living Tradition Concert Series" http://www.thelivingtradition.org/ ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 18 Apr 2000 07:53:35 -0700 From: Phyliss Ward Subject: Re: got a question Welcome Lynn! I would have loved to have seen more of Joni's paintings, but guess I'll have to wait until Saskatoon. The really interesting aspect of the evening for me, was the fact that they did have several different types of singers (pop, country, jazz, etc.) and I felt that this showcased Joni's musicality and how she has experimented in many styles. I felt Diana Krall really showed how Joni's songs could easily become Jazz standards. I wished that they had used some of her more recent compositions. Regarding Diana Krall: I first heard Diana about 5 or 6 years ago when they were playing her 1st American released CD, "Only Trust Your Heart" (at that time, "Stepping Out" was only released in Canada) in HMV. I immediately bought that CD and fell in love with her. I first saw her later that year (or maybe the next year) at The Algonquin in NYC. The Algonquin is a pretty staid cabaret room and the audiences are always "polite" and "refined". The first evening that I saw her, she had the audience cheering, screaming, and standing up to get a better view of her piano playing. I couldn't believe that I was witnessing this, least of all at The Algonquin. It was truly one of the best musical evenings I have ever spent. I told my lover that we were witnessing something that we would look back on in years to come. He agreed. We knew that we were seeing the start of an amazing career. We went back a week later (she played for a couple of weeks). We saw her again the next year at the Algonquin and in subsequent years at a couple of jazz clubs in NY. But on the first night of seeing her, as we were walking out of the room, she was standing in the lobby of the hotel and we told her how much we enjoyed her and looked forward to hearing her again. She took my hand, and said "Really?". It was so amazing that this incredibly talented and sexy woman was so shy and had no idea of the impact that she had on the audience. We talked for a couple of minutes and she was genuinely a nice person. I think that she deserves all of the praise that she has been given. She is, as they say, "the real thing". My only regret is that we probably won't see her in small clubs again. But perhaps we will. I saw her at The Blue Note (a jazz club) about a year and a half ago. This woman just plays the piano and sings and possesses the audience. I highly recommend that anyone who liked her on the tribute check out her CD's (her tribute to The Nat King Trio, "All For You", is one of the best jazz recordings to come out in years, IMHO). Date: Tue, 18 Apr 2000 07:51:18 -0600 From: John Downes Although I have to jump off the list because I just can't handle the sheer volume of postings (time restrictions I'm afraid), I thought I'd just add one note on this subject. A CBC radio program was giving away BSN to two people who could answer this question - probably done as a draw from the best answers. I thought I'd enter, but found that I could not think of which album was truly my favourite. Then the answer which seemed closer to the truth struck me. My favourite Joni Mitchell album is always her next. The reason is because each of her recordings has left me wanting more. The human soul can never get enough of what it desires the most: beauty, meaning, truth - in short, all those qualities that define Joni's work. I didn't win a CD with this answer, but I would not have been able to wait until delivery anyway. I bought BSN the day it came out. And now I wait with a worm on my tongue (bated breath, ha!) for her next album, already my favourite. Joni has left me wanting more yet again. Cheers to all Joni listers. Perhaps I'll join again once the summer rolls around. Meanwhile, have a great Spring, and to all of you who are able to see Joni's concert tour (not coming to Canada - darn) please cheer just a little louder for me. It's a style of Portuguese music, of which Dulce Pontes does a sort of arty modern interpretation. She also stays to the standard form sometimes. The only way I can describe this incredible music without going into great detail is to say it's comparable to blues in its intensity and passion. But it is really so unique and hard to describe. For anyone who is interested, go to http://home.ici.net/~rufus/Fado/FadoGuitar.html. It goes into a description of the Fado guitar and its tunings, as well as a bit of history on the music and its cultural significance to Portugal (my country of origin, by the way). Ms. Lang's lack of shoes before Joni could be considered an act of reverence and submission. More realistically, I think k.d. did it to get noticed. I thought what she was wearing was very manly and she reminds me of all my straight male friends whose unironed clothes she could have been wearing that night. That's part of k.d.'s act, to be an out lesbian and butch it up. It really works for her, gets people to notice her, and it's marketing as much as it's an exaggerated expression of who she really is. She's an amazing talent, but that isn't enough. Someone like Madonna, who has a minimum of talent ("a thimbleful of talent in a sea of ambition" - Mick Jagger) succeeds only because she always gets people to talk about what she's wearing, what she did to her hair. If you ask me, what k.d. wore and didn't wear was an extension of her persona. She works her masculinity the way Cyndi Lauper works her own fun, goofy idiosyncrasies. I think k.d.'s singing was pristine and heartfelt and she only honored Joni. I don't know that Joni ever sang in bare feet, but we've seen plenty of pictures of her without shoes, especially in the hippie days. And Joni is awfully fond of sandals that exhibit her feet with their red painted toe nails as recently as two years ago. I noticed a general lack of glitz in the outfits of all the musicians which is fine with me. That places the emphasis on the music, not on image, and the focus remained on Ms. Mitchell. - - Clark ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 18 Apr 2000 11:17:18 -0600 From: Bounced Message Subject: RE: onlyJMDL Digest V2000 #144 From: "Christine Nunn" Date: Tue, 18 Apr 2000 12:43:46 -0400 How much of this is her finally loving the press?
