For me, that was a painful perfomance to hear. I love that song, and I felt like he kinda butchered it (which is a shame, because I have great respect for his musicianship and a love for Fairport Convention). HU........... Dave ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 Apr 2000 00:18:20 -0400 From: Russ Harlan Subject: Tribute Impressions First of all, hey y'all... I'm a relative newbie to the list. (Relative in the sense that I was a list member for about two years prior to the release of "Hits/Misses". Life intruded, but I'm glad to be back. I remember this as a literate and thoughtful group.) I'm usually more of a lurker than a poster, but I had to post tonight because of the tribute. So nice to see the lady get her due. What a band! Dean Parks??? Mark Isham??? Terrific stuff. Is it only me, or did others find Wynona's performances as highlights of the evening? I'm more of a fan of many other performers on the show (Elton, JT, k.d.), but I have to say that Wynona's singing was confident and very much in the spirit of Joni. Others on the show, while enjoyable, looked a bit tentative -- as though they might have benefited from a bit more rehearsal time. Some performances didn't feel fully realized. Another exceptional performance: Cassandra Wilson. So nice to hear some Mingus, I was concerned that the entire show was going to be the early pop work. And when Joni came on at the end with "Clouds"... amazing.. singular. (I've been lucky enough to score tix for her show at Chastain Park in Atlanta next month. I've never seen her before, so I can't wait.) On the whole, a very well-produced event. (Save the annoyingly frequent shots of uber-fan Rosie O'Donnell. I have nothing against the woman, and she has managed to help artists like Joni. But did we need to see her so frequently? How about more shots of Susan Sarandon?) The show had a nice feeling of intimacy without being schmaltzy or twee. Hat's off to TNT for not making an "obvious" choice like an all-star tribute to, oh, Phil Collins. (Although when they do, I'm sure Rosie will be there, too.) Elton's remark about being more nervous performing for Joni than for the Queen was priceless! I look forward to reading the group in the weeks ahead. Whew. First of all Joni was looking great. Damn what a babe. Oops sorry ladies but its the old Betty Grable conditioned response trip. I couldnt help noticing how great she looked. Jonis such a beautiful woman. She looked about 30 tonight. Living proof that cigarettes dont make you look old they actually keep you a perpetual 38. Continuing to exercise my constitutional right to free speech I have to say that I kept looking at Joni and seeing someone totally amazed that at the other side of her life was this. Many times as the all intrusive television camera that does everything but have a small running blood pressure meeter of its target superimposed on the screen, I thought JOni had this look on her face as if like "what can I say". A national if not world broadcast of an entire event being produced with hundreds of stage hands and settings and acts and technology......all for Joni who LOST that beauty contest to another girl with horned rim glasses back in school days. Here was a musical even on steroids. each song produced to overproduced with this incredible band and performers interpreting her songs to fit their style. Joni has indeeed come a frighteningly long ways. If someone had suggested that to her 30 yrears ago she would have been hard pressed to believe it but here it was happening. That was my first thought. What must Joni think as this is happening. I liked all the songs but what really got me was Elton. He sang Free Man in paris in a very low register and it seemed to me that he was having a hard time with a cold inflicted vocal chords. In fact the song was played in a very unusual key. In any event here he was transposing incredible complex chord passages with fills into what I would bet was a last minute octave of choice. Incredible passages. Hes doing so much with the instrument that if you heard him all alone you would look in the other room to see where he must be hiding the band. Sorry but Eltons about the best pianist in the business. I also loved Cindy laupers version of Carrie. I saw her on the grammys a while ago and her voice just blew me away. She is so great. One of the most underrated singers in the business. AS for the other Women their wardrobes left me gasping. here it is a huge night out fo respect for the guest of honor they wear levi shirts and jeans. gasp. At some point you need to have respect for another person. This was it. I realize of course that all sorts of Weknowbetters will leap to the defense of the slob-chic and call me all sorts of names but thats how I feel. My last impression is that Joni did a great job in here new symphonic mode. Actually Joni transcends whjatever she chhooses to do on any given night. In that regard shes like Miles davis. Anyway while I loved the songs she did I would still like to see her tickle the Dulcimer. But what a fricken voice. Absolutely seguing into the next phase of her singing career and from what I heard her do shes right there with Peggy lee. If you dont know who she was go to the back of the class. Seriously Peggy Lee is one of the all time best female vocalists and song interpreters in history and a genius. In any even Jonis voice is so filled with soul as well as passion. she is preparing to tackle a new direction in her career to best take advantage of where her voice is going. And it is to a wonderful place. her approach to songs now will be to take each passage and make it her own. Like Van Morrison does. It remains a fact that her voice and soul content are on a level above most female vocalists today. While the MHSB (modern hot singing babes) preen and flash the pepsodent smiles and do an exact replica of the twenty or so other female smash acts who play the Celebration to Women Song Festivals and dont invite Joni. Here was Joni putting a song into a place they couldnt dream about.. So her performance flashed me back to seeing the grand dames of singing in this century and knowing now the difference in her singing today as opposed to when I first heard her. Like Sinatra she is adopting a place in which she will be comfortable (the pace and register) in the years to come. She will make this place her own.Where she can interpret the melodies and add dashes of articulation or phrasing that makes that version unique. Like a young girl standing there in the cameras gaze I felt like a dad must feel when the girl gets old enough to have a wedding day and the dad seeing her in her gown must realize she will never be that little girl again. As much as Id like Joni will never do the first four albums again. So thats my thoughts. Just the fact that this was a globally broadcast TRIBUTE. What a wonderful thing. She has made it to the promised land, never to be forgotten. She will be the standard for this era. What a tribute in and of itself. Actually it occurred to me that this even was more significant than many others recently. Thats because IT has been decided by the industry and the powers archiving its history. Joni is the winner. She above all others will be the one that embodies the sould and meaning of the time in which she played. Who else is there. madonna ? Winona ? Celine? Brittany (gak) When in doubt you go with the poet. I taped it so Ill have to go back and watch it a couple of more times at least. I didn't realize it was rosie tell she opened her mouth. Then I realized that this "asshole " that was all over the place was rosie. What you see on t.v. is not what you get in public. Forcefull people don't bother me, assholes do. Armatrading later apoligized to me for what rosie did, and I replied that Joan Armatrading doesn't have to apoligize to David for anything. With each performance I kept saying "now that's the topper!" and then the next one after another were just as great. My jaw was agape and grinning throughout. Each performer was so heartfelt and wonderful in their own unique way. James Taylor's extremely loving River was just over the moon. My God, it was like no one else was in the room except him and Joni - talk about palpable electricity between the two. k.d. was fantastic - she has one of the best voices in the business. I thought Richard Thompson made Black Crow totally his own - it was somewhat 60s Clapton-esque to me and I loved it. Also thought Sweet Honey in the Rock's Circle Game was absolutely delightful. Cassandra Wilson did a great Dry Cleaners. I LOVED Elton. And yes, yes, Diana Krall just about stole the show - wow! The show musicians lent soooo much to the production. No surprise - mostly the top guys in the business - Peter Erskine, his sometimes band mate, Bob Sheppard (who can very capably fill Wayne Shorter's shoes), Greg Liesz, Klein and Mark Isham (contributing on almost every song). Joni seemed to be welling up with emotion constantly and she looked absolutely beautiful. The photo montages were the best I've ever seen (lots of the best of Diltz) and the presentations were perfect. I loved seeing Tony Bennett the painter talking about Joni the painter. Joni's Both Sides Now at the close was unbelievable. I agree with those who thought they should have canned Hilary Clinton's laughably canned speech. Geez! It was great to see Donald next to Joni. The other guys sitting with her looked like her makeup artist Paul Starr and maybe one of her managers. I kept peering for jmdlers in the audience. Did anyone who attended spot themselves? I thought I spotted Patrick briefly towards the end. Kakki, going back to watch the second showing now. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 Apr 2000 02:57:37 EDT From: JRMCo1@aol.com Subject: TNT Tribute It was so gratifying to see Joni feted in the mainstream mass media, at last. Larry Klein as musical director assured a true representative sample of Joni's genius on the show. Some of my thoughts: - -My best of show vote goes to Cyndi Lauper doing "Carey". I loved the way she infused the song with an African rhythm and slower tempo. Her voice is perfect for this song. Occured to me that Cyndi has more depth than she's given credit for, probably due to her bubble-gum image from the "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" association. But hey, Miles Davis covered Cyndi's "Time After Time," and Joni reveres Miles, so Cyndi deserves her props. - -Got a kick out of the bit of promo they played over the "Batman and Robin" credits. At one point Goldie Hawn was saying how glad she was to be there, and how great the show was gonna be, while her bored-looking son looked on. Goldie looked at him and said laughing "He'll be glad to be here, too!" During the actual show they cut to Goldie and her son, showing him applauding enthusiastically. So cute. Nice subtle touch. - -Glad someone did "River." But I cringed every time James Taylor sang "river so WIDE." Made it a trite rhyme with "teach my feet to fly.." instead of singing "loooong" the way Joni does, holding the note in what I have always considered a beautiful bit of musical onomatopoeia (yes, I made that term up). - -A bit of narration from one of the bio-films (all three of which I loved; they reminded me of Barbara Burst's editing touch): "Mitchell's music doesn't just express emotions, but creates redemptive beauty from them." Nice. - -I want an outfit like Lawrence Fishburn was wearing to sport at the New Orleans Jonifest! - -Loved Cassandra Wilson's "Dry Cleaner" and Diana Krall's "Case of You" and thought Ashley Judd handled MC duties beautifully. She's an obvious true believer and ought to be on the JMDL, imo. Feels so good to be in love with Joni Mitchell tonight. - -Julius ------------------------------ End of JMDL Digest V2000 #194 ***************************** ------- Post messages to the list at Unsubscribe by sending "unsubscribe joni-digest" to ------- Siquomb, isn't she?
