I'm not sure I have any more energy than a lot of other people on this list, but by sheer fact that I have 4 boys and a busy life, I am well organized which helps in getting a lot done. (The old adage: "If you want something done, ask a busy person.") Anyway, I am conscious of "where" I put my energy, and I choose to put my energy into things that give of myself and my time where I think it is needed, and doing things like lighting a candle for Anne that Mags so beautifully suggested. I think if more people did these type of things instead of spending their energy writing hurtful posts like the one from Greg Dudichum wrote to Colin, we would have a very different world around us. Within the department I supervise, being nice and kind is a mandatory job requirement. I try to offer tips on "how to be nice" during the weekly meetings that I have once a month. One of the best tips I've used is the "beloved" technique. Which means to view the other person as your "beloved;" someone you know and love and understand. My example was that if you are being cut off in traffic, instead of allowing road rage to build and fester, imagine that driver is your grandmother who just got hit with a nasty wave of diarrhea and veered off to get to a rest room. If that was the case, you'd be a little more tolerant of the situation and be able to proceed ahead a bit more peacefully. Now, this doesn't mean that you turn into an all accepting doormat. It doesn't make excuses for boorish, thoughtless or dangerous behavior. It DOES mean that you try and remember that surface actions can tell you nothing about what's beneath. I believe that this balance allows one to approach a potentially hostile situation with peace. We seem to have more tolerance for the people whom we intimately love than with the nameless stranger. I believe that practicing the "beloved" techniques helps to put a face to that nameless and "force" us to remember that, as Bugs Bunny once said, "he sure is ugly now, but he was somebody's baby once." Some of you may be familiar with Buddy Miller as a guitarist for Emmylou Harris, and some of you might also be familiar with Julie Miller, his songwriting (and absolutely enchanting) wife. I had the pleasure of seeing them both live in Washington D.C. a month or so ago, and may I say they were fabulous!!!! The next day, my man discovered via his Dave Matthews Band list that they will both join Dave and Emmylou for a taping of Austin City Limits to air in early May (5th or 6th, I can't remember!) on PBS. They are considered country, but not the Shania-Twainy mainstream borderline pop country, or the Garth Brooks variety. They are a bit folk, a bit rock, a bit of this and that, and they are amazing. We got a copy of Julie's new album, Broken Things, at the show (and got it autographed, too, which was extra special) , and although it is wonderful, the only thing to top it is seeing them perform live together (they often perform on each other's albums, but are just beginning to merge their music in live performances, or at least that's what I got from when we saw them live). I don't know if anyone out there is familiar with the Millers, but if anyone is, read the article in today's New York Times (p. 24, arts section). And if you aren't familiar with them, you can download some sound files from CDnow...check it out. Dear Greg: Do you know who she is? She has said on numerous occasions that she is *not* a folksinger, that she hasn't been a folksinger since 1965 when she started writing her own songs which are *not* folk songs. If you really don't want to read anything but Joni content then you need to subscribe to the only Joni version of this discussion list. That way if those of us who are on this version of the list that allows NJC (no Joni content) are careful and make sure we include NJC on our subject lines when we are posting messages that do not pertain to Joni, you won't get them and you won't have to read them. It's true, we do forget to include the NJC on such posts from time to time but to err is human. And how does the saying go about forgiving? Oh yes! To forgive is divine! Wouldn't it *be* divine if we could all remember that one? And why didn't James Cameron cover this in > his movie? > > Helen and other Titanic people I am a long, long time devotee of all things Titanic, probably saw Night to Remember and the first Titanic in the 50s on Saturday Night at the Movies on NBC... and I bought the book A Night to Remember back in 59, 45¢ and had the passenger list memorized within a week... The Cameron movie, which I was prepared to hate, was wonderful, astounding. The fake story line was a device to get us around the ship. For once, a Titanic movie made real the depth of elitism and the totality of the suffering of the 3rd class passengers.... more 1st class men surviving then 3rd class children. As well, the Cameron movie was so up to date on all the research that we now know about its sinking: the split in two (unknown until the National Geographic team found the ship), for example, and the brittleness of the metal used in the ship. Apart from the love story, which was a plot device to take us around the ship, the technical information of the sinking of the Titanic conveyed in Cameron's movie was extraordinary. A lot of material would be repeated from other movies as there is only so much known about what happened in one place in a 2 1/2 span. However, no one movie could cover everything, and the California laying 10 miles away was not in the Cameron version except most obliquely. (And the California wireless operator was asleep, but another crew member was working the wireless with one problem: he forgot to crank it on, so he heard nothing, and the California's captain and officers were too obtuse to think of actually checking the wireless, which might have revealed it was uncranked and thus off, and they would have picked up the distress call' perhaps a thousand more people would have been saved.) To have added the fullness of that California story would have added more time and money to the production cost, and perhaps hard dramatically to work in to the Cameron version. That is my speculation. For those who disdain the Cameron Titanic, they have 1st Amendment rights and they might be influenced by some of the hype or other things that really aren't part of the movie itself, or maybe they just didn't like the movie. That is their problem. I saw the movie the second night it was out with a large group of Titanic buffs who were prepared to hate it, as I was, and we were stunned by the quality of the film. It surely deserved its Oscar. The usual film cited as the better film that year, LA Confidential, was a well-done but very standard detective flick that was far above the level of most of its genre, but it was a classy entertainment piece. The Cameron Titanic was - and is - one of the finest films ever. I know people will attack my opinion and that is just fine; if everyone liked all the same movies, I'd never be able to get into the theater to see the ones I like. I've also been a Titanic devotee since seeing A Night to Remember in my youth. I was so taken by Kenneth Moore's characterization of the First Mate that I went out shortly after and bought a heavy wool turtleneck sweater and a pea jacket which became my uniform for many many months. Its pretty short, but the writer seems to "get" Joni's career, which is always refreshing. Catherine T. in AZ STARS SHINE IN TRIBUTE TO JONI MITCHELL by Larry Rodgers The Arizona Republic Lovers of intriguing and daring popular music are lucky that seminal singer/songwriter Joni Mitchell didn't devote her immense creative talent solely to her first love. Painting--not the rich mix of folk, pop, and jazz that Mitchell has crafted since 1965--has always been closest to her heart, viewers are told in a wonderful tribute to her that airs today on the TNT network. "In her mind, she has always been a painter first," says Tony Bennett, part of the impressive lineup that interprets Mitchell's influential work in the broadcast. A series of self portraits has graced some of her album covers, honestly revealing the physical changes in a woman who has relished change in her music. An All-Star Tribute to Joni Mitchell manages to scratch the surface of the singer's 21-album output, which has inspired countless artists, including performers Shawn Colvin, James Taylor, Wynonna, Elton John, k. d. lang and Mary Chapin Carpenter. "I don't know where I would have been without you," Colvin tells Mitchell before she and Chapin Carpenter beautifully harmonize on Amelia. "I've loved you, Joni, since I was 10, and I can't believe this is happening," Wynonna gushes as her idol watches in New York's Hammerstein Ballroom. Wynonna, whose sister, Ashley Judd, does a radiant job as host, lends a twang to "You Turn Me on I'm a Radio" and joins Bryan Adams for Raised on Robbery. Part of the fun is watching how various performers choose to interpret Mitchell's songs. Cyndi Lauper serves a hypnotizing take on Carey, the tale of globe-trotting musical vagabonds. British folk-rocker Richard Thompson chants his way through Woodstock as Mitchell closes her eyes and sways in her seat. Jazz pianist Diana Krall threatens to steal the show with A Case of You, and lang gently caresses Help Me. Actor Laurence Fishburn reminds viewers of the songwriters forays into jazz. Mitchell was asked by jazz legend Charles Mingus to set lyrics to the last melodies he wrote before his death, resulting in 1979's Mingus. Mitchell's jazzy Dry Cleaner From Des Moines is put through its paces by Cassandra Wilson. The 56-year-old honoree appears on stage at the show's end, backed by an orchestra to sing Both Sides Now. Still a stunning presence with her high cheekbones and curious eyes, Mitchell exudes an aura of bittersweet joy that reflects the complexities of her music. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 16 Apr 2000 16:07:03 EDT From: SMEBD@aol.com Subject: Re: Close, but no guitars. ;-( In a message dated 04/15/2000 1:34:21 AM Eastern Daylight Time, zapuppy2@webtv.net writes: << but alas, no guitar because the call that beat us in knew the answer also. Just to prove my point, I when i used to show the Persians, the bath and blow dry would come three days before the show. Then they would be powdered twice daily till the night before the show. On the morning of the show, the blow dryer would be used to blow all the powder out. Then I'd go along to the show and stand around all day discussing other people's pussies. By the way, my hairdrier for the dogs cost $700. Getting a bitch pregant costs about $800 and then we sit on kitchen floors holding the couple till they 'let go' which can be anything up to 1hr or even longer. I once had a boy who was shy with the girls. My very posh friend, a real lady, told me over the telephone how to get him so worked up he would forget his shyness. It worked and he never looked back. However, if anyone had overheard the conversation, I am sure we would have been arrested. Still it wasn't too difficult as I had had some personal experience having learned the technique when i was teenager which came in handy.
