TNT is not provided by either of the cable stations here in Edmonton or by Starchoice satellite. TNT has told me that there will not be a video of this Sunday's tribute concert available for purchase. This means that I will miss the concert which I would dearly love to see. Would any kind soul on the list be willing to tape the concert for me? I would be more than willing to pay for the video tape and the cost of mailing it, etc.. If anyone can do this as a favour for a fellow Joni Mitchell fan, I would be very grateful. [the title role calls for a dramatic soprano, and marton will bust your speakers off the floor]. the name wally, by the way, refers to some sort of nymph that inhabits the tyrolean mountain woods--the opera's setting. many people in argentina think that my nickname is wally because my parents were fans of alfredo catalani [the opera's author]. italian conductor arturo toscanini, a great champion of catalani, named one of his daughters wally. wallyk, not a nymph...today >La Wally. The score thus far is Joni Pine Knob list, 12, Joni Chicago, 11, last time I checked. I hope others will add to this: You know that you are a JMDLer when: you have devoted five separate mailboxes for Joni: Joni Chicago Joni Pine Knob Joni (where all the NJCs come in, a sorting procedure) JoniFest (for Ashara's in September) Joni Friends (for saving cool things from cool people) You note that your subject "Letterman Loves Joni" kept showing up for 8 days and you felt a sense of pride that something you posted had a subject title that lasted that long. You look at your two church email mailboxes, your legal work email mailbox, and the five Joni mailboxes, and you do all the Joni email first and let the othjers wait. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 13 Apr 2000 23:40:34 EDT From: Chilihead2@aol.com Subject: fan mail sealed or e-mailed Just to recap I had suggested delivering fan mail to Joni at the Connecticut show. Marcel had suggested giving sealed letters to Joni. If you would like to email me fan mail or sealed mail, I promise I will do my very best to get them to Joni. If anyone would like me to deliver "fan mail" unopened , just send to Joni Mitchell, c/o The Chilis at Garden House, 8 Possum Drive, New Fairfield, CT 06812. And while I am at it. Yes there are still sunflower seeds to be planted in memory of Wally. Just send a $5 check with 66cents postage on a stamped self addressed envelope to the address above. All proceeds go to Jim to help with JoniMitchell.com. If she's 14, then I'm 12. This is not a cutsie sweet little 14 yr. old. Not only was I astounded by her voice, but the manner in which she composed herself during the interview I could have sworn she was in her twenties. I don't mean to say this in a vulgar way, but this girl has been around the block. She makes Drew Barrymore seem like Jon-Bonet Ramsey. I was quite impressed, and she seemed very comfortable as a singer no matter what age she is. I HAVE NEVER BEEN ABLE TO SIT THROUGH STAR WARS!!!! Yup, even being the pop culture whore that I am, I have never really seen it. I missed it as a child when it was in theatres because of either the Paramount strike, or because it wasn't a Paramount movie and so it didn't come to Chilliwack (where I lived and the only theatre was a Paramount), and so if we wanted to see it, we had to go to Abotsford, and no one would take me. I can't remember what the case was -- it was one of those incidents. Anyhoo, when "Pay TV" first came out in the early 80's, it was the first movie they played, and I sat through about half an hour and thought "wtf is this???" and have never looked at it again. I feel like some kind of freak not seeing it, but I just don't feel like watching it. Now, Saturday Night Fever... THAT'S a movie I watch every year! (Go ahead and say it: "That waterboy is even stranger than I thought... SNF over SW? God, he should be on the Kim Carnes List instead"). Oh, and as for the Lord of the Rings... I also haven't read those yet either... not because I don't want to, but I was a Narnia boy all the way, and my next door neighbor when I was 9 was this annoying genius freak who was always rambling about Middle Earth or something and every time we had a sleep over when we weren't fighting, he'd want to play this game where we were some sort of kings or something of this Middle Earth place, and it was just so bizarre. Anyway, he was so obsessed with the Lord of the Rings series that I just ignored it because I associated it with him. TGI-FRIGGING-F Tomorrow!!!!!!!! I am incredibly impressed at the scope of both Wally Breese’s website (a wonderful , living memorial to him) and JMDL and of the enthusiasm, affection and commitment of the people involved. I’m just sorry that my Luddite tendencies have kept me away until now ! I have launched myself into cyber-space during my research for my new book – "Shadows and Light", a biography of Joni Mitchell to be published next year by the large British-based company, Virgin Publishing (part of Richard Branson’s group of companies, just in case any of you get the wrong idea about the name !) . The book will be distributed internationally . For so long now, I’ve been dismayed at the often woeful lack of attention and analysis of JM’s extraordinary body of work over the years. The book is an attempt to redress that. I’m a life-long fan of Joni’s work , with dual identities as a BBC news journalist and an Arts writer and broadcaster; I’ve also written two other books (the most recent, Hymn to Her, a collection of profile interviews with 15 women musicians including Suzanne Vega, Nanci Griffith, Janis Ian, Yoko Ono , Rosanne Cash, Jane Siberry, Moe Tucker, Neneh Cherry, Tanita Tikaram, Carla Bley). I’m aiming for my book to be both passionate and poetic but also a credible literary work about a woman I consider to be one of the most influential and creative forces in contemporary music over the last three decades. Maybe I’ll get to meet some of you during trips to the US/Canada this year (I live in Britain and the book launch will be in London; I'll let you know details closer to the time in case anyone would like to come along) .
