Everytime I mention anything I do socially anymore, my non-list friends automatically ask "is that with the Joni people?" Many have no clue about Joni Mitchell, but they are becoming so intrigued about it all that they are starting to want in on the action! One, who knows absolutely nothing about Joni, looked completely hurt and crushed the other day when I told him I was seeing her in May and that I hadn't bought any extra tickets. Two other non-Joni friends are acting hurt I didn't think to invite them to the concert. Another friend tentatively asked me to play some of her music for him - so I played Chelsea Morning and BYT, thinking they may ring a bell with him. He'd never heard them in any incarnation (!) but did ask me if I'd ever heard of Sarah McLaughlan. I harrrumped that Sarah and all the others were begat by Mother Siquomb ;-) Kakki ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 12 Apr 2000 13:39:40 -0700 From: "Kakki" Subject: Joni and Bjork Waiting in the Wiltern lobby before the Stormy Weather concert, Ken Corral and I came across a set list laying on the bar and were stunned and thrilled when we saw the Joni & Bjork pairing. It was wonderful. Bjork hopped and skipped circles all over the stage and then gave Joni a huge hug and kiss at the end. I also have been waiting impatiently for the full-sized ;-) version of the concert to be released. I read an article a while back where Joni raved about Bjork and said she is one of the few she considers an original. However, if she DOES make a Jazzfest appearance, well... a lot of people be losing their lunch on the riverbank! However, I'll just do an arty Soy Bomb type of dance while I am flopping around, and people will just say "Oh, that Joni, she's hired that interesting, yet grotesque, conceptual artist... how cool", so I got all my bases covered! And as for preparing for Kate's trampling, I'll be able to avoid that too. You see, I'll just dress and act so hideously, I'll clear the room and get right next to Joni. Hmmm, I'll get out the MC Hammer poofy pants, and a replica of Seinfeld's puffy shirt, and if anyone gets too close to Joni, I'll just start dancing and poofing out the pants, and yelling "can't touch this", and generally just embarrass everyone out of the way! (NJC) With MicroSoft as on-the-ropes as it's ever been, a nighmare surely awaits ... stripped of it's monopolies in InterNet browsers and Operating Systems, the boys in the bubble are, as we speak, turning their steely gaze to the music industry. Largely computerized now anyway, the Britney androids of tomorrow will be supplied with material from MicroSoft's latest suite of software: MicroSoft Song A demo version was recently fowarded to me for review, and what follows is my experience. Innocent at first, the interface bore a striking resemblance to MicroSoft Word. So I put it through it's paces, typing just for fun: I went to Staten Island Sharon Before the "n" in Sharon's name, the Songwriting Assistant popped up -- an animated quill pen with Hallmark Precious Moments eyes -- enquiring in a digital voice eerily reminiscent of Truman Capote: "It looks like you're trying to write a song! Would you like some help?" Sure, why not? I figured, so I clicked the "Yes" button. The program thought for a few moments, then delivered a list of choices for the next line, each indicating the appropriate music genre: A. All the trees were barrren (alternative) B. I love you babe, I'm still carin' (ballad) C. Drank a beer and kept on starin' (country) D. Yo dem threads ain't fly yo wearin' (hip-hop) E. EEEE-YAAAAH (heavy metal) F. Stolen from the Native Americans (folk) Pretty swift I thought, especially when I saw the "Preview Audio File" hypertext link. Clicking that launched my computer into an ambient house music techno-beat ... regardless of which option line I selected. Apparently the programmers in Seattle are pretty keen on the Chemical Brothers. It was just a default setting anyway, and a quick search through the Help section located the "Composition" tab under the "File Options" icon. Here was everything a songwriter ever needed. Major chords ... no messy sharps or flats to muddy the waters. I could tell this version of "Song For Sharon" was going to be MUCH easier to understand than Joni's human composed effort in all it's analog imperfection. Unfortunately, the demo version came with the save feature disabled -- but not to worry, the full version's on it's way. Have a better one! Now, you're lucky. I'm one of those who can take our Lord (Lucas) being dissed It's proabaly an *age* thing, or rather it's mostly dependant on whether you happened to be under 10 years old at the time, and had no previous movie experience of its kind. I always get a strong emotional/nostalgic pull when watching any of the 4 Star wars movies, and it's not something I can really articulate. I've done my best to, on my website, but all I know is that it has a different effect on me to any other films. That doesn't mean I rate any of the SW saga among the Top 10 or 20 movies I have ever seen, although as a whole the four instalments constitute my all-time favourite franchise. Only 6 days ago, I watched The Phantom Menace for the very first time. Long after the hype had subsided, and in the comfort and atmosphere of my own darkened pseudo home-cinema. I could only judge what I saw before my eyes, even though I was alert to the many criticisms levelled at the film (indeed, my expectations were quite low). However, I was so dazzled, thrilled and comforted by what followed over the next 2 hours, that any cynicism vanished immediately. Some of us, a lot of us I suppose, judging from internet movie polls and box-office returns, have some undefined and mysterious link with Star Wars. It must connect with something inside of us, and re-ignite a spark from that first time we ever watched them as children. That doesn't mean any other opinion or view isn't valid....just couldn't sit back and not put the *other side* forward in its defence :-) I actually have a special Star wars section on my website - http://www.the-slipstream.co.uk - which can be found under the "Franchise" link on the Main Movie Menu. If you want instant access, go to : http://freespace.virgin.net/jason.maloney/Franchise_menu.html You'll also find a review of The Phantom Menace on my Recommended page at : http://freespace.virgin.net/jason.maloney/Recommended_Menu.html It probably won't change your mind about SW, but you may find it interesting. I also have a more detailed review of The Phantom Menace published on a site called DVDFever..... http://DVDfever.co.uk I'm a regular guest reviewer, and it's one of the two main reviews of the week. > But then came Titanic. You're probably right. Titanic is a great film, no doubt, and although I only saw it on the small screen (well my Wisdescreen Home Cinema set-up) it was mightily impressive. Again, I was expecting to be disappointed, yet the sheer impact of the film left me awestruck. Yes, the acting was slightly duff, dialogue cliched and characterisation slightly one-dimensional (echoes of SW?), but as a spectacle and emotional experience, it's almost unrivalled (IMO, of course). Perhaps it's just my own take. I tend to be swayed by the grand gesture, the surreal ambience, the *out of this world* factor. However marvellous some *smaller* dramas are, they can't equal that gobsmacking effect. > All that said, however, i can understand why some people would feel strongly > about it. It's just that i'd take Pleasantville any day. I don't mean to rant or criticize...at all. I can understand why you can understand :-) Pleasantville is in fact among my Top 20 films....because it fuses the less overblown qualities with the necessarly *surreal* ones. I've done my best to, on my website, but all I know is that it has a > different effect on me to any other films. Well maybe comparing Tolkien to Star Wars is really apples and oranges. I was in my early 20's when the first SW movie was released and doing summer rep at the University of Northern Iowa. So my perspective on it is different from that of someone who was a kid when they saw it. The thing to do amongst the theatre crowd that summer was to get stoned & go see Star Wars. I never did because I always had rehearsals or performances. The most fun I've ever had in my life was the two summers I did summer rep at UNI. There were periods of time when you might be performing one show & rehearsing two others. Lots of work but oh so enjoyable! > > That doesn't mean I rate any of the SW saga among the Top 10 or 20 movies I have > ever seen, although as a whole the four instalments constitute my all-time > favourite franchise. Getting back to the point, I don't mean to take anything away from Star Wars. As pure entertainment they are hard to beat. And the visual creation of space battles & different worlds is truly impressive (although I firmly believe that nobody has surpassed what Kubrick did in 2001). Sure they aren't great 'art' but they weren't meant to be. They were meant to capture the spirit of the Saturday matinee adventure movies of another era and they succeeded in doing that remarkably well, imo. > You're probably right. Titanic is a great film, no doubt, and although I only > saw it on the small screen (well my Wisdescreen Home Cinema set-up) it was > mightily impressive. I agree with you about Titanic. It's too bad the writing was so awful. And why they cast Leo in the role of the dashing romantic artist who sweeps the lovely Kate Winslet off her feet is beyond me. He looked like a 15 year old and had about as much sex appeal as a wet dishrag. But I found it impossible not to get swept up in the spectacle and tragedy of the film. Visually it is one of the most impressive movies I have ever seen. I actually liked the story and how it was framed by the exploration of the wreckage & the re-telling of Rose's story. If only a decent screenwriter had written it. (Where's Clark when you need him?) I also thought Kate Winslet was more than adequate as was the actress that played her mother. Kathy Bates was doing her Kathy Bates schtick as Molly Brown, imo, and we won't even talk about Billy Zane. But with some movies, I think it's enough that they entertain or impress. If they pretend to do something else or are full of gratuitous violence & gross-out stuff, that's another story. Neither Star Wars nor Titanic fit that scenario, so I say, enjoy them & don't worry about their not being 'art' or being too 'commercial'. I say don't let your snobbery get in the way of your pleasure!
