He thinks that she nailed the standards. He stated that he never got into Joni because she makes one work/think in order to understand her songs! I think that Joni is pushing this CD more than others in the past because this project is very dear to her--she really wanted to do a CD of standards. By my recall and count, Joni has met around 40 listmembers, both individually and in large representative groups, in Detroit, L.A. and Atlanta in the past couple of years. I can understand if she only met a couple people from the list but upwards of 40 people would be remembered. There might be some wondering as to why she referred to us as her "internet community", which sounds sort of generic, in the recent interview. It may be because that is easier shorthand for the general public to understand rather than making reference to a "discussion list." I've noticed that some other artist discussion lists have distinct nicknames, like the CSN "Lee Shore" and the Neil Young "Rusties". Maybe we should come up with something more memorable that she can refer to, like the "Turbulent Indigos" or something ;-) At any rate, she is about to meet yet another large JMDL group in Saskatoon. I only have one request - that those attending ensure that native son Evian is first in line to meet her. If he can't make it through the crush, I want a posse to drag him to the front of the line and I want photos! ;-D Kakki ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Apr 2000 17:45:59 -0400 From: Sally Pont Subject: RE: sunset pig - jlc I have always thought of the "pig" as a cop, but I doubted myself a bit when I read an article about Joni from her Laurel Canyon days. It reminds me of a conversation I had at a bar called Barracuda after the tribute the other night. I had taken a friend to the tribute, a guy who is just a few years younger than joni (I am 38) but who had never seen her perform before--though he is passionate about that era's music and worships, among many faves, Dylan and Lauara Nyro...anyway, he is quite the rover and insisted on going to barracuda after the show ( I mean not just for a drink) and I was game but not in the mood to cruise (long story---never was very good at it anyway). Well, in any case, we were soon being circled at our table by a young, rather attractive guy who found a way to start up a conversation and, after a few moments, sat down. Turned out he's a San Francisco-based clothinig desinger, has worked in Paris, sounds to be doing well, and seems to know his stuff too. If my tone is tentative that's because a). I had just met him and b). frankly, he was a bit soused! But eventually--ha, eventually!-- talk turned to joni and the tribute and though he wasn't very familiar with her his natural intelligence had him not so annoying about that--he said, "I wouldn't recognize her if I saw a picture but I know the name...isn't she mostly a songwriter?..." (hey, it could have been worse--he could have said "isn't she a folksinger?" !!!!). Anyway, my friend was pretty busy trying to hit on this guy (he had an objective!) whereas I would drift in and out of their conversation, but indeed I was having fun when I did drift in...and he and I had a pretty natural ease when talking...finally I said, during a lull, "She was wearing Issey Miyake tonight." And he was impressed enough by that. Then I turned to my friend (who knows nothing from designers) and I said "Issey Miyake is Joni's favorite--she loves the Japanese particarly for clothing design--but she loves Issey the best because, she says, he's the most artistic." ( I know, I know--i realize right now in fact that what she said was that he was "the artist"). I then said something like, "There's a triumvirate of great Japanese post-modernist designers, Rei Kawakabi, Issey Miyake and Yohji Yamamoto, and Issey is the most artistic." To which our new friend, in his cups but no dummy, and having clearly not misplced his opinions said, "No. No. Rei's the most artistic, Yohji is the most classical but Issey, Issey, he is the most adventurous. He's the innovator." And I thought--and I said--perfect, hallelujah, and amen. I hate to tell you this, but even so-called "skin"-coloured bandages don't match anyone's skin that I know, never mind what colour you are. That being the case, I suggest that, rather than trying to make them blend in so no one knows you cut yourself, hide it in plain sight by choosing the most outrageous coloured ones you can (although they ARE more expensive. It still evokes that feeling in me. Dear David, I agree with your comment about the feeling in "two grey rooms" being more about "longing". Guess Ive felt such a longing and could relate from that view point. This is what I love about Joni and her lyrics, how she makes us think, analyse and especially feel. Joni even said on the Rosie show yesterday that her own songs are filled with so many different emotions and that it was so important to her to get those feelings out rather than focusing on her technical singing if that makes sense. Hope I interpreted that correctly. I loved hearing that for I have so often felt a lot of different things on so many levels, while listening to her lyrics. Depending on what is going on in my life at the time, it seems like her songs might suddenly speak to my own experience. I love that. mags* - -- - --------------------------------------------------------------------- _~O / /\_, ___/\ /_ - ----------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Apr 2000 19:02:19 EDT From: Dflahm@aol.com Subject: Re: sunset pig - jlc Catherine, you wouldn't be pulling our collective leg about that Greek myth, would you? I think the ouzo was cheaper than you want us to give it credit for. I went there & watched a short 'preview'. There were some very brief outtakes & Jackson & Elijah Wood talking about making the movies. At the end it said that 'The Fellowship of the Ring' would be out Christmas 2001, 'The Two Towers' Christmas 2002 and 'The Return of the King' not until Christmas of 2003. If Jackson is at all successful at capturing Tolkien's amazingly detailed world and giving a faithful rendition of the characters and the story, I predict that these films are going to blow the Star Wars movies off the map as far as fantasy/myth-making type of films go. The source is so incredibly rich. Not at all like the cardboard cut-out characters & formulaic stories from that galaxy, far, far away (in spite of the fact that Star Wars borrows heavily from Tolkien).... But if he blows it...well, it will be a damn shame. It's going to be awfully hard to make the majority of the people who have read & re-read those books (like yours truly, currently in the midst of 'The Two Towers for probably the 4th or 5th time) happy with a live action film version. I thought the Bakshi animated attempt (as far as it went) was dreadful. I'm really hoping Jackson nails it because I would love to see quality movies made of this most wondrous story.
