I have been waiting and waiting for someone to remark on JM calling herself a diva yesterday on Rosie. It surprised me to hear that word come from her, especially about herself. While she fits the classic definition, of course, that word is tossed around so freely today to decribe others with far less range of talent or career longevity. (I won't use examples for fear of wild, angry threads, let's just say "I'm Comin' Out" hardly compares to ACOY in depth). Maybe JM is hinting that she wouldn't mind doing VH1's Divas 2001, A Salute to Joni Mitchell? Wishin' and Hopin' and Plannin' and Dreamin' here in Hollywood. I recently moved my speakers to the (measured) 45 degree included angle that others recommend. Then I did some research on the web about room treatments. I found that 2 things are important in the sound room- killing the first reflection from the side walls and creating diffusion behind the speakers. Next, the side wall reflections. I hung two antique quilts on the wall. This brought on more vividness to the sound- something that I suspect others call detail but it sounds to me like soundstaging. Lastly, I took out the centrally located TV set and inserted a small antique dresser. I put it exactly between the speakers so it helps to focus the mind on the center image. I pulled one drawer halfway out, another most of the way out and left the others pushed in. (Diffusion again.) Also on the back wall, is a hope chest and some old suitcases. I've heard that bookcases can be good too. The central chest of drawers "sounds" wonderful. It may seem strange to discuss the 'sound' of furniture placement but I'm a believer now. Gone is the glare-like sound of the empty back wall and HERE is the sound that everyone has been talking about. Whew! Now I can enjoy the stereo with the lights on for a change. Last night was the first time I can genuinely say that I heard why some love LPs. "For The Roses" is beautifully recorded! Wow! I can't wait to get home and listen some more! I think that she is, but not in the same sense as Judy Garland or Streisand. I think that Joni appeals to a very specific group of people--both gay and straight--and that for those who are touched by her artistry, she holds a very special place in their hearts and lives. I think that her gay following is very in tune to the emotions that she writes about. Being a gay icon doesn't mean that she appeals to gays only. Far from that. It simply means, IMHO, that gay men and women identify with some aspect of the artist and hold them in high regard. Much of this is news to me too (I heard about the SIQUOMB thing which, on its own, sounded kind of lame to me, I must admit - but then I hate those darned acronyms! However, reading your e-mail makes it a bit clearer. Maybe Joni should actually write this as a book or a series of books. I'm sure she could do it. It sounds as if it could be developed into a CS Lewis/Narnia type of thing - one of those "children's" stories that also speaks to adults. Joni really needs another project, doesn't she! I also have to wonder about the whole business of critics (of all expression) lambasting people for their "young" writings, as if they had been written a year or so ago. I've heard some of Joni's early stuff referred to as "pretentious". I came across some poetry that I had written when I was about 15 and thought IT sounded pretty darned pretentious too - but what do people want from a young child? It's part of the growing process. That was then, this is now. I suspect the kind of people who make those kind of comments about Joni haven't read or heard any of her stuff for at least the last 20 years and are assuming she's the same person she was at 19 or 20 - you know, the "folksinger" ;) - --- Garret wrote: > In my earlier post i had meant to include a passage > from Joni in that Hot > Press interview, but i feared it was getting too > long. Of course, what everyone fails to realize is that Joni was in Greece at the time. Although she loved it there, "It's a nice place to visit, but you wouldn't want to live there" syndrome (or IANPTVBYWWTLTS) (pronounced Yan--by-Wit-Lits)had well and truly set in. Joni was truly desperate to get back to California, but, having spent all her money on cheap ouzo and omelettes and trying to scrape the beach tar off her feet, lacked the funds to get back. An ancient Greek myth says that if you kiss a pig at sunset while making a wish, that wish will come true. In her desperation, Joni kissed the pig as the sun set over the Grecian isles - the rest is history. ===== Catherine (in Toronto) catrin_of_aragon@yahoo.ca _______________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I said it was probably because she has hired a new publicist and is taking a different approach to hyping herself in the media than she has with past albums, but I have been thinking about this and wondering what you guys think. Could it be because the old standards she has covered are simpler songs than her own, as she mentioned on Rosie yesterday, so that they are more palatable to the non-Joni connoisseur? Actually, Joni has wanted to do this for a long time, but her recording contract limited her to recording only her own compositions. I guess the recording companies felt that was her greatest asset. While true to some extent, Joni was nonetheless bothered by the constraint, like any great artist would be. First chance she had to prove them wrong, she did. Having just aggravated a cut on my finger, I reached for a bandage in my desk drawer and noticed that the Curad wrapper says, "Blends with Skin." I was taken aback ... WHOSE skin??? ALL skin??? I find Curad's statement to be presumptuous and offensive. I'm considered to be Caucasian (although I dislike that term -- I'm not from the Caucasus and don't really even know where that is), and this bandage actually does blend pretty well with my fair skin. But it's spring and I don't have much color yet. I looked up Curad online and came up with its parent company, Beiersdorf Medical, which was founded in Beiersdorf, Germany, in 1882. No, I won't go "there" but it does make me wonder ... There are lots of cute little cartoon bandages available. Curad even runs an Internet contest for kids to design their own. But does any company manufacture bandages for people of color? Does anyone know? Oh God, please let it be on MuchMore Music and > NOT THE CBC! Thanks for the info, Jim - (today is one day they're NOT handing out free copies of the Post at subway stations as they've been doing a LOT lately, hmm, I wonder why...) I hope you're right about MMM rather than the CBC (who would probably snip it down to one hour and maybe bump it in favour of a hockey game!) At least if it's on MMM, they'll show it more than once so those of us (like me!!) who are technically inept can attempt to tape it every time and perhaps succeed once (and I thought the VCR programming feature was a snap! mine goes nuts if you want to start taping late one day and continue past midnight - or maybe it's me and I really AM that much of a klutz). ===== Catherine (in Toronto) catrin_of_aragon@yahoo.ca _______________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? As for my impression of the show, my overwhelming initial thought was/is is that Joni is going to have to hire a special group of roadies for this tour to mop up the smiley faced puddles of goo that had been JMDLers before the concert. ;-) Penny :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Grace dies when it becomes us versus them......Philip Yancey ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Apr 2000 13:28:13 EDT From: SCJoniGuy@aol.com Subject: Re: Coupon Codes, Fun Stuff & SpongeBob?? She said something to the effect of: "Remember this? This was music." Music from a time before money was all important ... when interesting harmony and clever, savvy lyrics were the excpetion and not the rule ... when musicians played instruments instead of programming computers. I personally think Joni's pleased as punch to have, essentially, elected herself the spokesperson for the American songbook. Sure she'll take her critical shots on her performance and including two of her own compositions, but BSN isn't about Joni Mithell, it's about the songs. More power to her, and if her original material gets a commercial jumpstart out of it -- huge, but I think largely unintentional BONUS. I remember when we were jamming one time that she took paritcular interest in how I played that song and the picking style with it's heavy handed bass... I showed her but can't really say if she, in fact, learned it from me or not. lots of players used it. I never saw her use it in person but that's it on Cactus Tree for sure. a good example of a slowed-down use of it is by Steve Stills on Four and Twenty... on an open G it would be a basic repeated pattern of 6-4-2-6-1-4 with the bass as constant as can be... on CT she does a lot of 'plucking' of like a 6-2 combo or 4-1... hope that's understandable...
