Joni lyric to decipher Hey Lou It's embarrassing to admit but back in the sixties police were commonly called pigs by kids who called themselves hippies. I was never that comfortable with it (and I didn't call myself a hippie) but I did use it on occasion. Without a doubt Joni is talking from the perspective of someone who will be so happy to get home that she would even kiss one of the cops on the beat on Sunset Strip, who were known for their dislike of hippie types. By the way, several police departments adopted this slur into a slogan designed to boost morale: P.I.G.S.= Pride Integrity Guts and Service Rick > If anyone can explain, please e-mail me directly (I'm on digest now) -- my > kid's making fun of me here -- this is serious! > > Thanks and regards, > > Harper Lou ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 10 Apr 2000 12:58:05 -0700 From: "Kakki" Subject: Re: Concert Reviews gr8fuldave wrote: > Count me among those who want to see the reviews here on >the list, ASAP. It certainly is considered an important function and is done routinely on all the other music discussions lists out there. But the JMDL can be idiosyncratic, and I wanted to avoid future upsets by suggesting another solution. However, after thinking about it some more, I realized there is no way to control the list completely to avoid seeing concert reviews and setlists on it. Even if those of us who see the concert before the others label our posts or post them only on the websites, there are still going to be newbies who come on innocently and post their reviews without warnings - (this has occurred here everytime there has been a Joni live performance). Also, people are going to be posting press reviews of the shows on the list, which are certain to give away set lists and surprises. I think we are just going to have to live with having the reviews on the discussion list. However, I WILL, and I'm sure the others who see the first show, will, post spoiler warnings on their posts. Kakki ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 10 Apr 2000 21:15:12 +0100 From: "Garret" Subject: Joni in Hot Press The April 12th copy of Hot Press magazine (hte one with Moby on the cover) features the first of a two part interview with Joni spread over two (big) pages. The article seems, for a large part, to be written from the "Joni as a singer-songwriter" point of view. In fact the headline reads "Confessions of a Songwriter". The author, Joe JAckson, credits Joni with being "a pioneer in the field of confessional singer-songwriting". The article deals with both the personal and professional sides of JM. She discusses everything from how it was Bob Dylans songs that taught her music could be a medium in which to speak your mind, to her experiences with polio, to her esrly love for rock n' roll and dancing. She talks at length (well, relative length) about Rachmaninoff and Nietzche. This leads into her opinion regarding religous hypocrisy .ANd we get an extended interpretation of "acid, booze and ass/needles, guns and grass". The interviewer takes a grat interest in the fact that Blue is an album of candid honesty and emotional openness. Joni attempts to explain where she was coming from wiht that album, her mindset and reactions to people. Also, she speaks about her daughter. The article closes by telling us that Joni has never recorded"an album quite as raw or revealing again" Ok, so some people may know all this already, but for me it was revealing. The most memorable part of the interveiw for me was Joni discussing her early songwriting, and how Both Sides Now came about. On another topic altogether, i have to admit to being one of Oprah's fans. I don't know why, because much as i like her, i find her "self-imporvement" buzzes rather irritating, and then there those equally as annoying "soul/angel" shows. I consider her a great personality, and a very good talent. SHe has a gift to speak to people. For me, the acting is most impressive. Due to Oprahs film Beloved i was introduced to the writing of Toni Morrison, a lady who is truly one of the modern literary worlds most valuable treasures. Marian, I think your birthday message that accompanied the cookbook also specified it was from the "Joni Mitchell Discussion List." I will add that Les had a four hour lunch with Joni back in 1997, during which they discussed the JMDL and the posts. Les wrote a report of this meeting and it is in the articles section of the JMDL website. Also, when I was at LACE, I initially was just going to give the Jonifest CDs to her friend Shel to give to her, but he insisted I give it to her and made sure I got to see her. When I said I was from the "discussion list", he immediately asked if I was a friend of Les. When I gave her the Jonifest CDs, she immediately made the connection between us and the cookbook, without my mentioning it. When I told her that the performances were good on the CDs she said emphatically "YES, I know they are good!" She know that and remembers that from the Tribute Tape that the JMDL members made and sent to her back in 1997. Based upon all these indicators, my deductive reasoning therefore concludes that she does know us ;-) Kakki ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 10 Apr 2000 15:22:39 -0500 From: "H.D. It is part of being human. Blimey, even Jesus did. So you are normal as far as that goes. Yiu know, we never wil, have the answers, never will see the big picture, never will know the whole story. (at least not whilst here in the body). This is why and how faith comes into the picture. If you already believe you know the answers, know God and his and her plan for you, you don't have faith-you don't need it since you know it all already! of course no one does but there are those that think they do cos they read a book and interpreted it as such. Still somtimes, when i am going thru a period of desolation, I envy them their arrogance and certainty. Then when going thru the consolation and all is light again, i feel awed and just glad that I have faith, like you, that all is well. I have no idea what god is, why we are here, what it is all for. But I have faith that there is apurpose and that good(god) will out in the end. So when things are dark and dismal or life is ebbing away, this is when faith rreally comes into play. i am sure it will all be okay. In many ways it is already okay, it is just our minds that aren't. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 10 Apr 2000 14:31:10 -0600 From: Bounced Message Subject: joni's clothes From: Walter R Rodgers III Date: Mon, 10 Apr 2000 14:09:55 -0400 Nicholas; I havn't made it through all the posts, so I don't know if this has been = answered yet... her dress was what I would call slate blue and the wrap = was brown, reminded me of the color of mink. I thought this was fascinating; _"the first songs that i wrote were not very soul serching. They were very *young*. Lines like "nights in the city look pretty to me". Although i did write BSN as one of those first ten songs. But *that* is half naive and half worldly. Each verse alternates in that way" Elaborating on the genesis of one of her most famous songs Joni explains that its roots also stem, in part, from a fairy tale that she was writing. "it was called Mythology and focused on a place that had two kingdoms. I t was kind of like childhood Zen. The kingdome of Fanta and the kingdom of Real. Fantasy, rality. And BSN came out of that mythology, from Sequan, the queen of that mythology. It *was* a childrens story! And yet people say it's narcissisticbecause i'm refferring to myself. But it was the Queen of the kingdom of Fanta singing. And the whole idea probably came from my reading Lord Of The Flies. *That* was *a* direct influence."_ I dont know if that is a well known fact, but it was new to me. There was an interesting side bar in which JM discusses her love for and the differences between Billie Holiday and Ella FItzgerald. That's when they cut to a 5 minute newsbreak about what else, but Elian and the upcoming meeting with his father. I swear, here in South Florida it's "Elian--All The Time" News. They couldn't wait another 10 minutes until 5PM (Rosie's at 4) to let us know whatever Elian news they would be telling us at 5PM. I can't believe it. Can you tell I'm upset? I was putting together a Joni on TV tape with Letterman, Rosie, the Today show and the TNT Tribute. Anyway, of what I did see Joni was radiant, she sang beautifully and just talked about the music on the CD and how it came about. First she sang Both Sides Now, which I started to tear up at, then the interview. She closed with Answer Me My Love. She's toned the hand movements down from when she was on Letterman. She came across as very sincere and heartfelt. No talking about how horrible the music industry is or any of that stuff. She stayed true to the crinkly outfit trend she's been wearing lately. This time it was kind of a rust color top combined with a dark denim shirt. She had real cute small earrings on, with a little dangle on the end. I'm hoping the plug and publicity she gets from this show will really increase the album sales. I'm starting to calm down now. I'm sure somehow I'll be able to get a complete copy of the show. An interesting aside... As you may recall I went to the Tribute taping last Thursday, my one day trip. Well, early Thursday morning, I tried to go to Regis and Kathie Lee on standby. None of the standbys got in that morning, but in talking to a couple of the people on line with me, I found this out. They had gone to the Rosie show earlier that morning (at 7:30) to try to get standby tickets for Robin Williams on Rosie. They didn't get in, but those standbys who didn't get into that show were allowed into the second taping which was the one Joni did on Thursday. They didn't stay. Wouldn't that have been a story, if I'd have lucked into that show by accident. I had no idea she was taping this one in advance. You know I would have done my darndest to get in. The piece featured several photos of the event, including a full-size (20 inches tall!) pic of JM with her fists up, in the style of a victorious prize fighter. Other pix include Elton John, JM/Lauper, Wynona/Bryan, Tony Bennett, kd lang, group shot, and JM/Larry. The headline, "Shades of Joni" was in type 2 1/2 inches high. The text, with two pictures, is available at: http://www.nationalpost.com/artslife.asp?f=000410/255031 The good news for Canadians in this story is the line "Thursday's tribute ... will be broadcast stateside on Sunday and in Canada later on." Oh God, please let it be on MuchMore Music and NOT THE CBC! --- We get Rosie at 10 am and 4 pm here. What impressed me was what a good listener Rosie actually can be. Her response to Joni's comments about "A Case of You" was dead on: "If you want me I'll be in the bar." I'm also thoroughly enchanted with Vince Mendoza's arrangements for the BSN songs. Later I heard Geffen records went bankrupt. Hmmmm. This letter was like a true confessional of my admiration for all of her work, blah, blah, blah and how DED had revived my interest after it waned somewhat. I shared it with a few friends who thought JM would call me after reading it, as Diane Schuur once did. The letter even had a reason for being written. I obtained a piece of JM artwork about the same time and heard on the news that JM's beach house was destroyed in the Malibu out-of-hand surf. The news report said a lot of her artwork was lost to the sea. I sent her a snap of the piece and said she could have it back, if she longed for some of her older stuff. It is dated 1977.
