Just for a bit of perspective, though: A few years back, I was lurking around a Gordon Lightfoot mailing list (he's another of my faves). I made the mistake of offering a comment along the lines of "Gee, he's a terrific songwriter, though of course he's not in the same league as Joni Mitchell." You shoulda heard the loud wail of protest and dissent emanating from that group! They all think GL is The Greatest! To each her/his own. P.S. Regarding HOSL: interesting and all, but give me _Hejira_ any day (one of my two favorite albums of all time, the other being the far simpler yet strangely wondrous _Prince of Wales_ by Alison Statton and Ian Devine). P.P.S. One way to measure Joni's greatness is the fact that none of her compositions are cited in the fall-off-your-chair hilarious book _Dave Barry's Book of Bad Songs_. A highly recommended read for anyone into music! I'm going today to get some sooper, sooper lite gauge slinky strings for this thing. wow, it's been so many years since I played, the med. gauge strings for this thing. that came with it seem to cut right through to the bone! ouch!<<<<< Pat! So glad to hear that you finally got your guitar! I think we all breathed a sigh of relief. I wanted to suggest to you (if you can get your hands on them) to try the Elixir guitar strings. They are a little more expensive, but they have a polyurethane coating on them, so they're a lot easier to practice on. When I first got my steel string, I used them (until they all broke from being retuned so much) and I got a lot more mileage with less pain for a few weeks until I could build up my strength (and the beautiful, girlie, ever-peeling tacks that now cap my fingertips so I can't feel a thing) If you can't find them in paradise, I'd be more than happy to pick you up a couple of sets here in the city and send 'em down to you. They sound pretty good too! How's the guitar otherwise? Thanks so much for your work on that tab! I can't wait to see it. BTW, do you (or anyone) know anything about Cactus Tree? I can't figure out the finger-picking to save my life! They are just finishing adding three stories, and they usually are pretty reasonable. Also, you could spit on the Mendel from the Park-town...seriously. If people don't mind staying about a 10 min drive from the Mendel, there is the Country Inn which is very nice and reasonable from what I remember. Also, there is a brand new Super 8 that I am sure is cheap and looks ok. Anyone wanting hotel advice, just let me know! He seems to hardly acknowledge jazz or black music at all and sure, that's his prerogative, but it means that I get little emotionally out of the music.<<<<<<<< Ever hear "The Girls of Summer"? That is jazz. "Sooner or Later" is also totally swung. Nearly the entire score from "Follies" is pastiche from the big band era - that's jazz. Part of the brilliance of Sondheim's music is that he takes non-conventional harmonies, like those in jazz, and uses them in a new Broadway style that is influenced by jazz. Well, it's not so new anymore, but it's a long way from Rogers and Hammerstein. Lots of his rhythms have a groove that can only come from jazz - certainly not pop or classical. "Here's to the Ladies who Lunch" is sort of a samba. If you haven't heard this stuff, check it out. I think you'd be very pleasantly surprised! : ) Tanya ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 10 Apr 2000 00:12:16 -0500 From: "H.D. I laughed reading your post because I've also been wondering for some time about this "crinkly" thing she has going ;-) I recall she wore a blue-ish crinkly dress to the Stormy Weather concert similar to the Tribute dress. She wore another crinkly blueish-turquoise outfit to the ASCAP awards. She is wearing a greyish green crinkly in the hand on knee painting from TTT and a white crinkly in the French Kiss painting from BSN. I really cracked up when I saw her at LACE wearing no crinkly clothing but wearing a crinkly black silk back pack! And related to the LACE show, Chili wrote: > Remember how Joni talked about the cookbook and the bios. I was so thrilled to see Joni mention this in that Pro QB interview because it reinforced the conversation I had with her at LACE. As I mentioned back then, she did not want to talk about anything but that cookbook and the bios. Even when others standing nearby tried to drift to another subject she would resolutely bring it back to the cookbook discussion and especially the bios. I was really so surprised by it all.
