A spokesperson for the band told LAUNCH that STP played a two-and-a-half hour concert the night before (LAUNCH, 4/6), and singer Scott Weiland's throat was bothering him after the show. On Thursday, Weiland was still having throat problems, and the band didn't think they could give the performance they wanted to, so they decided not to perform at the tribute. In the place of STP, English singer/songwriter/guitarist Richard Thompson did the honors on Mitchell's "Woodstock." The spokesperson stressed there was nothing else wrong with STP, and the guys were very disappointed that they couldn't play that night. LAUNCH spoke to Thompson backstage at the event. "Well actually, it was thrust upon me at the last minute," he said. "Stone Temple Pilots were supposed to do it, and they didn't turn up, so I had an hour to figure it out." The show will air on April 16 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on TNT. - -- Bruce Simon, New York Little added note. There's an article on Music265 that's was written a bit prematurely....it's about how STP performed Woodstock at Joni's tribute. Haha! I don't normally like to talk about a song, but there's a little story about this one. When I was about 14, arson was the big crime in my neighborhood. One bitter cold January night, I (along with the entire neighborhood) stayed up all night to watch a building that was covered in aluminum siding burn down. In the morning, everything was beautiful at dawn, because of the ice that formed from the water from the fire hoses. A fireman brought out a lump of melted black with some wires sticking out of it. He asked us kids if we knew what it was. We all guessed, but didn't know. It was a telephone - completely melted by the intensity of the flames. Hence the line "except for metal stone and bone and a few thin threads of wire." Anne BLOOD BLACK NIGHT Smothering in damp night air He takes the long way home He climbs the stairs of deep despair Heavy heels hit crumbling stone He shakes the rusted railing loose On his way out to the ledge Stands ready like an unlit fuse Out here on the edge In the blood black night Where dreams die so young To the needle or the knife And the pain of life gone wrong He sits out on the fire escape And watches shadows pass He hurls his empty bottles down Just to hear the breaking glass Says he's already doing time He's up to twenty years He's itching to commit the crime To get him out of here In the blood black night Where dreams die so young To the needle or the knife And the pain of life gone wrong And in some old forgotten rooms Abandonned to the rats An angry hand spills gasoline And drops a lighted match And all traces of life inside Are stripped bare by the fire Except for metal stone and bone And a few thin threads of wire In the blood black night Where dreams die so young To the needle or the knife And the pain of life gone wrong ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 8 Apr 2000 08:34:14 EDT From: PFallo@aol.com Subject: Re: RE: a few more tribute thoughts patrickl@bway.net wrote: >i wrote back: "remembering last summer's show: i won't forget (don) byron, >(doug) wieselman, the percussionist and jane siberry hanging on for dear >life on 'strange boy' for a long time. that's the edge that music should >live on. thank you for that." >and with all my fondness for last night's show, i stand by that. when >musicians really risk something, magic happens. as a listener, that's where >i want to be. and for the record, joni's vocal on 'both sides now' last >night was out on that edge. bless her. patrick, thanks for the comments. yeah, the joni jazz tribute certainly had much more of an edge to it and it was magical. there was a real sense of risk taking. i did think that at the tnt thing, while yeah obviously much slicker and show biz, some artists really took it out and those were my favorites. thompson's "woodstock", lauper's "carey", cassandra's "dry cleaner", taylor's "river", krall's "case of you" sweet honey's "cicle game", and of course, joni 's "both sides now" which kind of summed the whole thing up, bringing it full circle. i gotta admit, i went into the show with great trepidation, worrying that in some way that the show might trivialize joni in some sugar, coated, hollywood way-but it didn't-and that was due to joni. she has really touched all these people's souls just as she's touched ours. the love came shining through. btw, there is a review of the show in the saturday's ny times. it was reviewed by ann powers and the title was "poetic doyenne holds court with enduring spark". generally a very favorable review. you can probably check it out at nytimes.com. phil ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 8 Apr 2000 09:04:30 EDT From: SCJoniGuy@aol.com Subject: Re: pat's guitar update - FINALLY! I'm so bummed that I missed everyone Thursday nite. It was great to catch the show, to be in the house watching Joni smiling and tapping her toes to so many great performances, but odd for me to do it for the most part solo, with no one to share it, talk about it. Ugh. As fate would have it, I was stuck at work until 7:30, so I missed all of the Blarney Stone fun. Damn. The reports have been a great way to relive it all, though. (I'm especially glad that Patrick was able to make it down!) I don't think I'd have much to add, except: - - I've had a shit-eating grin on my face since, oh, about 8:00 last nite. No signs of going away soon (or ever). - - that Diana Krall NAILED "Case of You." I've had a lot of people trying to sell her to me over the past several months, but it wasn't until last nite that I put the money down. Understated, heart-wrenching, beautiful. - - that it was so wonderful to watch Joni in her box seat, shaking her head, tapping her feet, appreciating those appreciating her (and just as with Day in the Garden, at many times I felt that she and I were the only ones in the room). - - that my big disappointment was the Stone Temple Pilots no-show (some of you know that the first song on my CD is about an infamous Scott Weiland NYC no-show two years ago, when he was busted trying to buy heroin just a few hours before he was supposed to hit the stage. So again he eludes me!) Mr. Thompson was a happy substitute. Also: where was darling Chaka? That's about it. Again, sorry I missed everyone. (Though I thought I had a brief Pearl sighting from afar!) PS: This was in the NY Post today: "THE guest of honor at China Club on Thursday night was Joni Mitchell. TNT had just taped a tribute to her at the Hammerstein Ballroom with performances by Elton John, k.d. lang, and Cyndi Lauper. But Michael Bolton was ready to rock. He jammed with the house band singing "Knock on Wood" and "(Help Me Find) Somebody Else" to the likes of Rebecca Romijn-Stamos, Laurence Fishburne and Goldie Hawn. Then Mitchell-impersonator John Kelly started singing her classics, and Joni came toward the stage transfixed. Later, Bolton jumped onstage again to wail Chuck Berry's "Lucille." However...in December, my sweetie gave me tickets to Mary Black for the holidays for the same night. Not disappointing him was more important than jetting to NYC, and the concert was FABULOUS!!! For those of you not familiar with Mary Black, she is a wonderful singer from Ireland, and a while back was the lead singer in the group DeDannan. Synchronicity struck as, just as I was sitting in my seat at Boston's Symphony Hall, thinking about the listers that were watching the Tribute at the same time, I opened the program and read,"After seven hugely successful albums, Mary Black wanted to produce a recording with a bit more edge and contemporary feel. She traveled to Los Angeles to work with the legendary American producer Larry Klein (whose credits include Joni Mitchell, Tina Turner, and Shawn Colvin) to record "Shine," which was released on Curb records in 1997." Later on in the show, she sang a beautiful song from "Shine" written by Larry Klein, "Nobody Lives Without Love." She prefaced the song by saying how wonderful it was to work with him, "and," she continued, "He is soooo cute, too!" LOL! I highly recommend this CD. It contains 2 songs written by Larry as well as "I Misunderstood" by Richard Thompson. Great musicians on here too, including Larry on bass, Greg Leisz on guitar and pedal steel. Thank you a million times to everyone that so eloquently posted on the Tribute concert. As usual, I felt like I was there, and I so appreciate the time it took to let us know how it was. Then all of the sudden, around 3:30 am, I heard a bunch of voices in the next room. My friends( Bootlegg Shaman) had had a gig that night we're just getting back. At first I was somewhat pissed off because I had fallen into a deep sleep and all of the sudden was awake, or at least conscious of everything. First I tried to ignore the voices, which did not completely bother me as these are good friends of mine, but I found it impossible to go back to sleep. So I listened to what they were saying and to my surprise they were talking about "Mingus" and what it must have been like to be in the studio with him. I could hear Joni's voice in the background, singing away. After that, I found I was not upset at all, and didn't mind being woken up. Not long after that, I heard someone mention eggs, french toast, and bacon, and soon I could even smell warm drafts of bacon coming in from undeneath the door. I couldn't hold out any longer, so I left my room and joined this impromptu, late evening breakfast. I mentioned the story of the whales beaching themselves on the day of his death, and I whole heartedly agree with Joni, as I am always wondering about life and death, existence and love, and all the mystery behind it all and everything that causes this mystery to linger on. I had a huge breakfast of bacon, sausage, eggs, and french toast. When "Mingus" was over I put on "Mingus Dynasty" and it seemed to be the perfect background for the evening. I have never heard anything that resembles what Mingus created in his jazz workshops. Listening to him, I had the feeling that we had somehow stepped out of time and were just being. Then somewhere in the middle of "Mood Indigo" I began to feel really sleepy again, and everybody lumbered off to bed. And then, as if it wasn't enough already, I had these really bizzare dreams which I can not describe but they are so vivid in my mind I can picture exactly where I was and they feel like experiences that actually happened. It is not often that I wake up, still completely entranced by dreams, but it is one of the best feelings. Along these lines, I would like to print the lyrics to a song I wrote entitled, "Requiem" which I wrote when I found out a friend of mine was in a coma and did not know if she would come out or not. I plan on playing this song at Jonifest 2000. Requiem Shadows cry for the morning, We build our fires at night, Looking for salvation, From the unfriendly hands of fate. Our eyes dance with the flaming tounges, As we sit so still. And we long to shine so brilliantly, For a moment, for a day. Sometimes we make it to the other side, We write our own passion play, But the ending is not always clear, And the journey, goes ever on. Sad eyes sleeping in a quiet place, Underneath a darker sun. Waiting for a miracle, A chance to live again. A thousand memories stir your waking voice, Once you came upon a million suns, And you learned to speak in ancient tounges, But found a language all your own. Still the mystery moves you gently, Of how this life came to be. The dusk it solemnly approaches, And you know you must be on your way. There is so little that I can say about Bonhoeffer or his impact on my ministry and theology for all words of mine pale to absolute nothingness next to this man's life, teachings, ministry, witness. For all the talk of "validity" and other fictions created by people to cause separation in the Church, such marks of "validity" having nothing to do with faithful witness, Bonhoeffer is a pastor and theologian who, along with those who worked with him in the Confessing Church of Germany during the 1930s and 1940s, preserved the validity of Christian witness in Europe, and perhaps the world. It awes and humbles me that in my first worship service with my congregation since last Sunday's being consecrated a bishop, that we will commemorate the life of Bonhoeffer. It is a reminder that that I have done so little compared to one like this, and he did it all in only 39 years of life. With love, and in memory of Bonhoeffer, and thanksgiving to God for the witness of Bonhoeffer and all the martyrs of the Confessing Church, and in solemn memory of the victims of Holocaust who never would have died had this witness been heard, Vince PS I am also sharing this with my friends in the Joni Mitchell Discussion List, a group of people with an astounding collective wisdom and spirit, and a great concern for that which affirms all that is good and speaks of love. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 8 Apr 2000 13:41:44 EDT From: Tunajon@aol.com Subject: Atlanta Ticket Confusion I would love for ANYBODY who knows any details of tommorrows Atlanta ticket sale to send the details to both the list and to me personally (tunajon@aol.com), since I'm a digester and want to make sure I have the info before tommorrow morning. Please help to reduce the bunk in our already bunk crowded lives! Feel free to begin by forwarding my response to everyone who you sent the warning to. Bonhoeffer and Joni....hmmm. Bonhoeffer is also one of my favorite theologians and Joni is, of course, my favorite performing artist. Both uncompromising, bold, and true to their convictions, but gracious in personal interactions, I think they would have hit it off very well together, regardless of differences in philosophies. But have you ever tried to read Bonhoeffer while playing Joni? Not a good mesh! Bonhoeffer is much heavier than Joni! To tell you the truth, I had never remembered hearing that line before! And how appropriate was the timing! So Joni and Dietrich have been meshing in that wonderful karma that does exist in our happy JMDL home! [i had never left the church of jesus in my heart and soul. being a roman catholic, however, or a member of any other organized church for that matter, sometimes seems to be at odds with being a follower of jesus.] after my last eucharist at st francis xavier's church on 16th street, i was trying to think of an appropriate prayer to summarize what i was feeling, re-entering the church, taking communion after more than two decades and being on the verge of leaving the man i loved and the city where i belong to return to a life that is no longer my own in buenos aires. and sitting there, in the already empty church, all i could think of was: "i'm traveling in some vehicle, i'm sitting in some cafe: a defector from the petty wars until love sucks me back that way." that was how i addressed god that day and how i sum up my life and times. wallyk ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 08 Apr 2000 22:59:12 -0400 From: "Sue Cameron" Subject: JMDL signs Hello all! I liked Brian's idea of having signs at the concerts. Thinking about that made me wonder if we could somehow hand the JMDL loves Joni sign that I made for Woodstock at each of the concerts. This would be very tough as she is doing some shows back to back, but are there listers who are doing multiple shows (like the Rev. Vince who is doing both Chicago and Detroit)? Let me know if we think we can swing this and I will get the sign ready to mail for the first concert on 5/12/00 Los Angeles, CA: Greek Theater. Is there someone who will be at the Concord Pavillion on the 13th from the LA show? From there we could mail the banner so it would get to Miami by 5/17/00, and then maybe priority or overnight it by 5/19/00 for the Atlanta, GA: Chastain Park show. Regular mail should work to make the 5/22-23/00 New York shows but once again we may need to overnight for the 5/25/00 Washington, DC concert. Same for 5/27/00 Hartford, CT then we would almost need someone who would be going to Boston for the 5/28/00 event. Priority or overnight to Chicago on 5/30/00 and the Rev. Vince could transport to Detroit. From there another overnight mailing to Brian Gross for the 6/02/00 Philadelphia, PA concert. Let me know what you all think. Can we do it? I'll bet we can! I adore and respect Joni even though I don't necessarily agree with her all the time. And over the years Joni has been marvelous at getting me to really ponder her words deeply....no other artist comes even close! But when it came to spiritual matters, I found Joni to be long on observation and short on answers. Bonhoeffer, on the other hand, was zeroing in on some of the answers I had been long searching. Bonhoeffer is definitely some heavy reading....at times harder to absorb than Scripture. And for me anyway, while really concentrating on discerning what was merely his (DB's) interpretation of Truth and what, in fact, turned out to be actual Truth for me, Joni's lyrics were too much of a distraction at that time....hence the short term switch to wordless Classical music. Now, that intense chapter of searching at a lull, Joni's lyrics remain powerful and lovely, but don't carry the same kind of weight with me they used to. Something's lost, but something's gained. ;-) I appreciated your post too, Wally! ;-) Peace, Penny :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Grace dies when it becomes us versus them......Philip Yancey ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 9 Apr 2000 01:49:09 EDT From: IVPAUL42@aol.com Subject: Re: JMDL signs In a message dated 4/8/00 11:02:55 PM Eastern Daylight Time, scam1@freeway.net writes: << Hello all! All people's ideas are interpreatations of what they feel is Truth. it can't actually be Truth as we have no way of discerning Truth objectively, only subjectively. So what a person decides is Truth, is only their idea. It can't be anything else. When we make a descision to accept something as truth, all we have done is made a decision-we haven't actually made an objective discovery. That last sentence is clumsy-it's like we might read something and decide it is the Truth. However, it is only our idea that it is Truth. It might be but we have no way of knowing this. None of us can form objective ideas and meaning. We create meaning thru our own individual experience. That is what we spend our lives doing-creating meanin. And because we are all different, and have different experiences, we create different meanings. A person immersed in an Islamic culture feels just as strongly that their Truth is THE TRUTH as do those brought up in a Xtian culture. Life would be more peaceful for both, if they could accpet they do not actaully know the Truth-just their idea of it. Joni's idea of the Truth is as valid as anyone elses. Of course Joni does not provide the answers-no body does. One of the things about trying to find oneself and God is to accept that there are no answers, unless we decide there are and then those answers are only answers for ourselves, because we decided they were. What makes our lives richer and works for us will not necessarily work for another. So it is wise not to believe it will. ------------------------------ End of JMDL Digest V2000 #178 ***************************** ------- Post messages to the list at Unsubscribe by sending "unsubscribe joni-digest" to ------- Siquomb, isn't she?
