The singer is never interviewed. For people who watch Letterman a lot, they would note that Dave paid Joni a supreme compliment by having her in the chair at all... very, very few singers ever make it to the chair, and the only one that I can actually recall is Aretha. Listen to the videotape again and hear Dave say "beautiful" as the song ends... something he very rarely does. For anyone who regularly watches Letterman, Dave was showing Joni the ultimate compliments. So with the Letterman show, Joni was shown all high honors. If that is not cool for some, then that is too bad. That is Dave's way and in Dave's way, all his regular viewers are going, "That Dave really likes that Joni." You want gush? Leno and Rosie will gush. Dave is more sublime. My many years of Dave watching tell me that Dave was glowing over Joni. And that he brought her to the chair, well, as I said, that is for that show a very rare honor given to a singer. You don't like Dave's way? Nothing can be done. But look at the tape and look at his face as he looks at her... that was the ultimate compliment. As I said, if you want gush, or conversation, that is not the way of it on Dave's show. I said tape Dave for me, and start a half hour later than normal because of the bball game. Once my tape was assured, I went to sleep. Then as if guided by an unseen hand, I woke up at 12:15, popped a tape in the vcr, watched and taped Joni, and sent off a post (for which I was slammed for saying she looked radiant since she looks radiant all the time..) and went back to sleep. Imagine my surprise, then, when I call TM today and find out that THEY NEVER GOT MY ORDER! ACK!!!!! Tribute Get-together For everyone going to the "ALL-STAR TRIBUTE TO JONI MITCHELL" in New York City tomorrow, April 6, a group of us are getting together at the Blarney Stone at 259 West 34th Street (between 7th and 8th Avenues), starting at about 4:45 in order to grab a table before the officeworkers arrive. I talked to the manager and he (in his Irish accent--aaahh!) says the place is about 50 feet from the door of the Hammerstein, they serve meals as well as drinks, and extra people joining in won't be a problem. I expect to be there and Pearl from Florida will be there also. We'll be on the lookout for wanderers, and I'll set a couple of Joni CDs up on the tables, probably LOTC (my first Joni) and DJRD, to help you spot us. So to everyone going to this very exciting event, please stop by and share in the anticipation: Blarney Stone, 259 W 34th between 7th and 8th anytime between 4:45 and 7:00. I am so looking forward to this!!! And, of course, if anyone knows things like where Joni may be hanging out afterward or which hotel she's at, now's the time to spill the beans for anyone who's interested in doing some seeking. Penny, thank you very much for telling the list about this event! I never would have known otherwise. And now that I have a printout of the broadcast times on TNT that you posted, this is truly going to be an exciting multi-experience event. And lots of thanks to Christine who posted her first message to the list this morning and then almost immediately was asked to suggest a place for this get-together. She not only did that but then walked all over her work neighborhood at lunchtime making sure her suggestion was the best place. Well, welcome to the list! You've really been thrown into it and racked up some generosity points with your efforts (not that anyone's keeping score). Thank you -- I'm looking forward to meeting you tomorrow evening. And regarding the chance to see so many musicians and even Joni herself, and the chance to meet some other JMDLers: even though I'm not a very noisy person, here goes the gift-from-Catgirl and now the JMDL cheer of great approval: WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!! hey, that felt good. I remember, in particular, when Missy Elliott was on, after she'd done her song, there was a break and when they came back she was sat in the chair next to Dave. He said something like 'when's the cd out? tuesday?' and she said 'yeah' and then Dave was like, 'okay see ya folks'. We should count our blessings that joni got a sentence in. Although, it would be nice if Dave would talk to his musical guests more; they're generally much more enlightening than politicians and movie stars. Okay, not always, but Patti Smith was on a week or so ago, and he didn't interview her! What a chance missed, she is such a cool interviewee. Personally, I think Dave should skip the crap at the beginning; he cracks lame jokes which the audience don't even find funny, but insist on cheering and whooping anyway just to compensate, and this lasts for like half an hour or something grrr anyway, we don't see it in the UK anymore so feel free to devalue my opinion :) Matthew ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 5 Apr 2000 19:16:41 -0400 From: "lpeakes" Subject: Joni on Public Radio Hi - I hardly ever post, and haven't even heard "BSN" yet, though there's often not a day that goes by when I don't think about Joni Mitchell - she's that deeply ingrained as one of my archetypal mind/beauty ideals. Most of the time I'm work work working or trying to rest up and nourish myself in service of my little career. - I finally saw the Jazz host at the radio station where I work (I arrive early in the morning and am gone long before he gets in for his show) - so I asked him whether he's been playing the disc (I didn't even know we'd gotten it - it wasn't on our library shelves) - He said yes - people love it here in Vermont. He's been keeping the disc on his desk (now, some would question how devoted a fan I am that I didn't rifle through the columns of releases at his workspace to root out "BSN" months ago - but I swear what I know of her makes her a huge deal for me) He said she seems quite popular these days - GOOD! I hope she's making bucks and can buy lots of good groceries, pretty things and art $upplie$ Also - the monotonous Garrison Keillor will read "For Free" on his "Writer's Almanac" scheduled for this Friday. (Didn't he do this one before? Seems to ring a bell) That's all the news - wish I could go to the Boston concert - and Ashara's Labor Day bash sounds awesome - it's only a couple of hours away, but it looks like I just can't take the time - it's kinda' lonely, but I'm glad to have this list in my life! ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 5 Apr 2000 19:23:41 -0400 From: "Jim L'Hommedieu" Subject: Steely Dan Tour - NJC Steely Dan has announced a few shows. In fact, the next night Lou Reed was on, and all Dave had to say at the end was to Paul, "that Lou Reed, he's reaaallly downtown." And then something about him being a really hip guy. Lou Reed was nowhere to be seen, and what Dave said was funny and true, but it was clear he didn't relate to him at all. (Unlike Dave, I was mesmerized by Lou Reed's performance, like I am by Patti Smith's -- both of them seem very shamanistic now.) > ....That is Dave's way and in Dave's way, > all his regular viewers are going, "That Dave really likes that Joni." I agree, and it was sweet when Joni squeezed his hand and said something, maybe about his health, that he appreciated. Joni probably knew there wouldn't be time for conversation and, after coming back from commercial, she was leaning forward as though she and Dave had been talking. So even though it was all too short timewise for a Joni-fan, it seemed very comfortable for both Dave and Joni, which on that show is quite a compliment. Debra Shea P.S. Just as an FYI, David Letterman is not "live" TV. It is videotaped earlier in the evening, and is edited. Yes, there are time restrictions and they have to time things out to fit the TV hour later in the evening, but if things go over, some stuff will just be edited out. It is very rare these days to do TV that is really live. That's why everyone makes a big deal out of it. Like the ER episode a few years back, or Geo Clooney's upcoming live version of Fail Safe. I purposely put the word "live" in quotes in my original message to make the distinction that it's TAPED live, but what we see is recorded. I guess I didn't make that clear enough, but I think most people realize that no TV show they're watching is actually live (except for the examples you mentioned). My main point was about the time restrictions for most talk/variety shows taped live, regardless of editing before broadcast, and that they usually have to gallop toward the end to get out in time, which routinely makes it difficult for Dave to interview his musical guests. The March issue of BigO magazine (Sheryl Crow & Nanci Griffith on the cover) Page 31 REVIEWS Joni Mitchell Both Sides Now (Reprise) To put it mildly, the new year's most surprising new album has arrived. And it comes from Joni Mitchell, the woman who wrote Woodstock and once defined hippie chick chic, who then turned jazz chanteuse and then returned to invoke the blithe spirit of folk-rock fusion, and who now gives us a new disc of old songs striving to push a point home. And what point might that be? Why, simply that of the Great American Songbook. Cheekily titled Both Sides Now, after her best-known composition of 1967, this is a collection of old classics and standards, plus two of Mitchell's own songs. Call it something old, something new, something borrowed and definitly blue. The meek and faithful among Mitchell's flock will be well and truly stunned. Here, there's not one strident strum of that carefully-tuned acoustic guitar (its aural zenth already reached in Miles of Aisles, Mitchell's excellent live album of 1974). Neither is there any of that slap-happy lbanez electric (whocased in 1979 on her other live album, the lovely Shadows and Light). And forget that Steinway piano, because she doesn't play any at all here (preferring to deploy the great Herbie Hancock instead). All she does now is sing. The only remnant of her past is the confessional nature of the songs, and it's quite an improvement on the bloodless mess of her last album, 1998's largely forgettable Taming The Tiger. Clocking in at a resonable 51:37, this new one begs repeated listenings and is best appreciated if heard all the way through. The standards are classic songs that Mitchell began incorporating into her live shows of recent years. Themes of lost love now loom large, amid the couterpoint of French horns, muted trumpets and soprano saxes (the latter played to perfection by Wayne Shorter). The album was cut in just 3 days in London, at Sir George Martin's famous Air Studios. Four songs were done with a 71-piece orchestra, four with a 42-piece orchestra, and four with a 22-piece big band. The results are mixed. Mitchell bravely attempts At Last, the Mack Gordon/Harry Warren tune of 1942 best rendered by Etta James, and leaves you wondering why she tried. that old torch ballad, Stormy Weather, doesn't quite cut it either, not when compared to Frank Sinatra's austerely beautiful 1944 recording. Mitchell's reading may be note-perfect but lacks the extra edges that lend conviction, and her attempts to cop Billie Holiday seem a tad shallow. But redeeming features abound. Aided by Mark Isham's searing trumpet, Comes Love and Don't Go To Strangers come uniquely alive. Rodgers and Hart's I Wish I Were In Love Again is a jaunty experiment in wistful longing, as Mitchell shows us her love for the deft turn of phrase. How can anyone resist lines lie "The furtive sigh, the blackened eye/The words I love you till the day I die/ The self deception tht believes that lie"? And, ironically, the high point here isn't those old cover tunes but one of Mitchell's own songs. A Case Of You, first heard on her brilliant 1971 album Blue, is rearranged with a brooding string section that makes it even more boldly evocative than the original. That's perhaps the most poignant statement of all, given that mitchell has now forsworn writing new songs. Both Sides Now is the first album in a new trilogy planned by Mitchell and her co-producer (and ex-husband) Larry Klein, the comon thread being old songs spun anew in a symphonic setting. Way past the point of worrying about silly words like 'career suicide," Mitchell shows us that the hippie chick in her has rebelled in the smartest way possible, by crafting music so unexpected that it may take critics and fans years to recover. She challenges you to love the gamut of her self-expression, the whimsical and the sly- both sides, now. (7)-Gerrie Lim ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Page 40 has another review Joni Mitchell Both Sides Now (Reprise) Tracks: Sometimes I'm Happy and 11 more If '60s music was different from '50s pop because it identified with youth then Both Sides Now is like an aural Back To The Future. Folkie Joni Mitchell has gone big time with an album of covers from the romantic '50s with a full orchestra and horn section. The selection of songs and the way they are played suggests Mitchell is telling us she's looking at things "from both sides now". No arguments here that the lush romance of Sinatra and Bennett are valid. What's troubling is that youth culture needs validation too. You won't find that here. Mitchell is too content playing the glam game. No experiment or risk-taking here. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 6 Apr 2000 01:12:57 EDT From: CaTGirl627@aol.com Subject: JONI MITCHELL JONI MITCHELL JONI MITCHELL!!!! I was so excited to see this!! I plan to go back early one morning and take a picture of these windows! Then I went to Borders Book Store. They had a small BSN/TNT poster in their music department, could hardly see it down at the bottom of a wall. I asked the manager if I could have the Joni poster when they didn't want it anymore. He kept asking where it was and I kept pointing & telling him over there on the wall..........he couldn't even see it!!!!! Finally he told an employee to move it up........ he also told me I could NOT have the poster that they throw them away!! Well.......pooh! At least Joni's small poster got moved to eye level!!! For anyone interested in picking up some CDs.......don't know if it's at every Borders tho........they put out a bunch of different CD's marked down to $9 - $9.99 in a display box while I was there. It was just outside the music department at the Borders I stopped in. Quite a few different Joni CD's.......... including Court & Spark, Dog Eat Dog & more. Actually, the center of any talk show is the personality of the host, so if a viewer doesn't connect with that person, it doesn't matter who the guests are. They're on for just a few minutes whereas the host is there for the whole show. Compared to other talk shows, I like the Letterman show a lot, mostly because I like Dave's shooting down of the pretentiousness of show business. Of course, he himself is in show business, so he's always making fun of himself also. The celebrities that really have trouble with him are the ones that seem to have the most inflated sense of their importance. More relaxed, down-to-earth people usually have an easier time during the interview. Plus, compared to the fawning that Leno or Rosie or most people interviewing celebrities do, his edgy attitude is like a breath of fresh air. So when he is positive about something, it's easier to believe (not that it affects my opinion in any way). I don't think anyone watching such shows does it for accurate news anyway, it's really just entertainment, see it, enjoy it, forget about it. Letterman is definitely one of those entertainers that people either like a lot or, like you and John, think is dreadful. Leno's the one that gets on my nerves -- he seems like such an old-fashioned comedian, slying making fun of male actors who mention a male friend, for example. His jokes may be funny but his attitude about a lot of things is ignorant, I think.
