I've just rewatched the segment of Letterman I taped with Joni (back in the days when it was screened here), and she sang "Just Like This Train" (solo with VG-8) - promoting Hits and Misses. Also on the show were Mel Gibson and Christine Lahti (although I didn't tape them). From memory, the musical guests on Letterman don't really get interviewed. They get 5 minutes at the end to sing their song - and it looked like someone was giving Joni the "wind it up!" signal off-camera - then 5 seconds to plug their album! Letterman mentioned Hits, then asked her about Misses and she said it was like most of her career, then said "that's not self-effacing, it's just the songs I think people really did miss." Then the credits started to roll. I'm quite excited about this - not just because I love "Will and Grace" (and Jack and Karen!) - but because a lot of my friends who think I have weird taste in music, watch this show! Maybe they'll finally see that there are other people in the world who've heard of Joni, and that she even gets mentioned in prime-time sit-coms! Of course it'll probably be six months before that episode screens here! I was so excited and my husband was even into it (considering he usually makes fun of my little obsession, this was a welcome change : )) But didn't you find it unrealistic that both Will & Grace had trouble deciding what to do when that little play was changed to the evening? Yes, it was a stunning performance and made my anticipation of the upcoming concert grow by leaps and bounds. But I was still way-bummed to see Joni barely sit down before the show ended. I can understand Dave's not having the time or inclination to interview most of the musical acts appearing on the show. But this was Joni Mitchell, Legend in Her Own Time. No mention of the tour, no mention of the Tribute Special.... just a quick thanks and a handshake. I understand the time constraints very well - after all, I only had to watch about 12 commercials immediately before Joni came on. But IMHO, blowing by someone of Joni's stature shows, well, no class. Sorry, Dave.... but you blew it. Don ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 5 Apr 2000 01:51:46 EDT From: AngelinoCoyote@aol.com Subject: Traveling with Will and Grace I promise this is no late April Fool's joke (Clark). Having just returned from DC last night, I am back on the road today, checking into the Monaco Hotel in SF, staying till Friday. I told my pierced, genex bellman as he toted my big old bag that I have been on the road so much lately, I was going crazy - bored and lonely but finally in my 3rd favorite city. He asked if I had ever stayed at the Monaco - I said I had not. He said "You'll love this place. Just have a relaxing evening, order in room service, have a Jacuzzi and play some music on the CD system. If you need CDs, I have some." Of course, knowing my JMDL pals would have me certified for not carrying at least 12 CDs as I travel, I said, "Well, I did bring a few." Not five minutes later, he came back, saying, "here's a few of my favorites, give them back to me on Friday." I scanned his cache and saw Court and Spark. The other stuff was kinda scary (okay, except the Guns and Roses, which I do like). I said, "So you like Joni Mitchell?" He replied, "Hell yeah man, she's cool. Does 70s rock-and-roll." He went on to explore my traveling selection consisting of HOSL, DED, BSN, and H. He said, "Ya mean she did some more stuff? My mum turned me onto this disc a few months ago." Feeling suddenly of a parental age with eyes rolled upward, I simply replied, "Yes, Matt." He said, "Ya know, my mum said she's gonna be on Will and Grace tonight." Tempted to ask him what he was smoking, I asked, "Doing what?" He replied, "Singin, man." I explained that my friends on the LIST hadn't told me that. He said, "What?" Never mind. Trying to conjure up an image of Joni singing with Will, Grace, Jack, and Karen doing back-ups was more than my travel weary body could take. I ran a bath. Freshly jacuzzed, full of Monaco pizza and a nice cab, the phone rang. It was my boyfriend telling me to turn on Will and Grace. Yet another surreal experience in SF. I watched, mouth falling on the floor - listening to Matt's C&S (first time in years). Well, Matt, she may have not sang on the show or even been on the show, but you gave me a show and yet another chapter in my memoirs tentatively titled, "The Men I Have Known." Good night my good pals on the list. I am putting BSN in the CD system to calm the frayed nerves of this boy now seemingly of a parental age. Taking the ferry to work across the SF Bay from Marin, per usual, my thoughts turned to Wally and I watched the seagulls at play in the sun drenched sky. I was perusing the SF Chronicle entertainment section and came across this Siquomb quote in the "personals" section: "The music business just makes me sick. It's a joke. Can you sit and enjoy any kind of music or awards shows? Where are the adults? Where is the class? This is whiners and screamers and screechers and they're all full of themselves over nothing, you know, just like the scum that populates this business. I'm ashamed to be a part of it. I hate it with a passion. - Joni Mitchell, whose new album is Both Sides Now, in Rolling Stone" But wait, there's more... Then turning the page, I saw that Joshua Redman, who is directing the San Francisco Jazz Festival this year, would be playing a free noon concert at the Virgin Megastore, 3 blocks from my office. Moreover, the concert would be recorded and a CD of the performance would be burned on the spot. A drawing would then be held and 12 lucky attendee would go home with a copy of the CD, which would be signed by Joshua and the band. The concert was fabulous. Joshua and his quartet played four songs from their new CD, "Beyond." Very adult. Very Classy. As fate would have it...I won! I spent an hour after the show chatting with Joshua about jazz and Joni (of course) after he signed my CD. His wife is an uber-fan of Joni's and insisted on playing Blue in its entirety at their wedding reception in New York a few years back. The New York Times wrote about their wedding and the Joni connection at the time, he said. Anyway, I intend to send the CD to Michael Paz. I'm hoping he'll agree to burn copies for himself and anyone else interested in having a copy. I'll want the original back though, Mikey. :-) Peace and love to all. - -Julius np: Joshua Redman "Beyond Live @ Virgin Megastore San Francisco" April 4, 2000 ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 5 Apr 2000 02:50:56 EDT From: JRMCo1@aol.com Subject: Re: Joshua Jazz and Joni in SF (njc) Forgot to mention that excerpts from the Joshua Redman show in SF will be featured on the "Newshour with Jim Lehrer" this Friday. First, like all of you, I loved Joni on Letterman! Been loving BSN for a while, but it was so great to see her looking so relaxed and at home, and to hear such expressive singing. One of the things Miles Davis said he loved so much about Billie Holiday's later recordings was her incredibly elastic rhythm (I think she always had that, and so did he). And now Joni, always an epic fan of both Miles and Billie, just having such fun with rhythm! So, you can imagine how excited I am to be going to one of the concerts!!! Yes, my dear friend RickieLee has weathered the slings and arrows of outrageous Ticketmaster to ensure that we have seats, so yet again, I'm heading to beautiful Boston. My fingers will be crossed until then, though, because I'm playing a concert myself the previous night in Vancouver, and am scheduled to land at Logan airport a mere three hours before showtime - if anyone emails me saying, "you dumb hoser, that one's in the afternoon!" I'll just gather up my Canadian dignity and.........go anyway. After all, Boston also means Ric! Anne! Ashara! ChuckE! Barbara! Maybe a quick trip to Connecticut (Heather!) Then New York - my very accomodating travel agent arranged for me to fly into Boston, and out of New York. So.....Patrick? Kay? Kenny? Can you keep a few hours free during the first three days of June to hang out with a balding old Canuck with middle-aged eyesight? Last time I posted about availability of a Joni book I was wrong but....here goes. My trade database says this book (ISBN 0609600087) is the "Collected Lyrics & poems" (or is it the other way around) - and though I can't consult my own copy the publication date fits in with this. What might be more interesting is something entitled "Art Book" by Joni Mitchell which has a release date some time in 2001. I'll post the ISBN for that if anyone wants it. However, the book trade databases still show Joni's "Autobiography" down for release some time this year, which doesn't seem very likely.
