I was sixteen at the time. The school rock band I played in were invited to play at a dance up in London and, amazingly, my mother let me go. When the teeny dance ended at about 10.30 and we'd packed away the gear, someone said "Let's go to The Flamingo in Wardour Street to see 'The Graham Bond Organization'. I can still vividly remember walking down the steps of this cellar club in the middle of Soho thinking "they'll never let me in" (I couldn't even get into X films as I looked about 12). I hid behind my fellow band members and without any trouble we were in - my mother would have died - this is what I had been looking for all my life - a dark smoke-filled bar full of old people grooving away to the loudest music I'd ever heard - Graham Bond, on hammond organ, singing like he had a mouth full of gravel, Jack Bruce thundering away on bass, Dick Heckstall-Smith screaming on sax and, on drums, this ginger-haired, sunken-cheeked guy with his eyes closed and his mouth wide open, playing hundred mile an hour solos all through each and every song - my first exposure to live R 'n' B and Jazz. I just stood and stared at Ginger with my mouth open too through the whole set. I had never seen anyone that good playing so loud and with such energy so close before. It was just the most earth-shattering pumping sound you can imagine and my little teeny ears rang for days after. PaulC PS. Looking for a biography on the net I found this at http://www.jackbruce.com/cream/ginger.htm. Talking about the late great modern jazz drummer Phil Seamen, Ginger says, "Phil heard me play in the All-Niter Club which used to be the Flamingo on Wardour Street. Tubby Hayes (the sax player) had apparently been in there and heard me and ran over to Ronnie Scott's Club and told Phil to come down and hear me. When I got off stage I was suddenly confronted by my hero." Those two record store employee characters. He saw lots of funny detail! Like the fact that the bigger guy was wearing a _vintage_ jacket. How accurate and funny! All those ex-girlfriend portraits remind me of my ex-es, especially that Catherine-Zeta Jones character who talked all the time but never _said_ anything. And Cusak's character comes in like a jerk and goes out like a better man. And his finacee shows him that being a record store owner is one of his "Top Five" best possible, all-time, cool jobs. "Nick was a beautiful man, but walking on solid air, helpless in this dirty business, an innocent abroad ... He was killed by the indecent, parasitic opportunism that pervades the music business." I was also interested to read in a Dirty Linen article that Joni was one of Nick's early influences. At http://www.dirtynelson.com/linen/feature/42drake.html "Nick could listen to a song once and then repeat it from memory. This gift allowed him to practice advanced folk-guitar techniques such as open tunings, double-pick rhythms, and two-finger rolls. John Renbourn, Bert Jansch, Davey Graham and Joni Mitchell were a few early influences. Around this time he was also developing his own singing style, a blend of twisted syllables and slurred consonants. That became the Nick Drake trademark: cool, distanced phrasing with just the right touch of timing. Some critics contend that he sounds as if he were singing on the moon. Ethereal and angelic, his voice seems to float over instrumentation." I had just graduated from high school and was still trying to decide what to do when I grew up. Yes, life certainly was so much simpler then. Or so it seemed. Not to sound too nostalgic, but those were the days when FM radio had a certain air of mystery and magic. There were few ads and garble to be found...and more often than not, there was plenty of real and good music which was a rare treat. It was into the wee hours of one such magical night that I sat alone in a little room in the back of a big old Anglican church where the office was located. Through hours of silence, I waited for calls to come in. I can still hear the creaking of the old wooden stairs which I had to climb to 'there'. The local radio station was on in the background and all of a sudden I heard Joni's voice for the very first time. Down To You (Court and Spark) was on and the lyrics stopped me in my tracks. I called the station to ask who it was, and the rest is history. For a while, I used to have warm little conversations with aforementioned local DJ about Joni and life and such. Those were the days. Joni and her music were to become somewhat of a lifeline for me in years to come and whenever I need to think, her music serves me well. Somehow, I feel less alone. Not to say that I'm lonely or anything, it's just this thing about hearing shared experience through her words ... or something. I think that if you are here, you know what I mean. Well, it is indeed the 'something' that keeps me tied to Joni and her wonderful songs, and as I said, Court and Spark still holds that special place inside my heart. all in all, I feel pretty lucky to have found a space where kindred spirits can share collective thoughts and dreams of Joni. thanks again for writing, mags. - -- - --------------------------------------------------------------------- _~O / /\_, ___/\ /_ - ----------------------------------------- - --------------F0AC9C1CA81AA83C0ACB229D-- ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 03 Apr 2000 18:01:03 -0500 From: Vince Lavieri Subject: Clark Carlton, Secrets and Lies, NJC Friends, I read Clark Carlton's 1 April 2000 story and thought a bit about what he said, and reading between the lines, I thought I saw something... so I called mom and asked if it were so, and she said, yeah, my son, it is so, as you had thought, my son, And I said mom, can't I now stop living with my life so secretive, my always pretending to be something and someone else? And mom says yes, it is time to tell the truth. So I can affirm that all that Clark said was undoubtedly true; he did meet Joni as he said, and spend the weeks together, but there is something that Clark doesn't know, but the clue was there in the followup to Heijra, DJRD: who was Don Juan, and what did the reckless daughter do, and why is Joni in disguise on the cover and standing by a smaller figure, a little man so to speak, and why there are no Joni pictures on Mingus... you see, there was a souvenir for mom after Clark left. and the two sisters in Clark's story who were disturbed by mom's and Clark's lovemaking are the inspiration for Crazy Cries of Love, and I can finally say to Clark, at long last, now that his half of the story is out, I can finally stop the lies and the cover-ups, I can finally say to Clark (and did you wonder why i wanted so badly to see you, to see your play in Chicago last year?), what I can can at long last say after Clark has told his story about mom, is: "Daddy!" NJC I just wanted to let my friends in Joniland know that I'm back from my three weeks in New Zealand and have re-subscribed to the jmdl. It was a great break from work (which had been getting me down somewhat of late) and I felt like a 'free man in NZ'. And, there to welcome me back was an exciting Joni package from SC Bob M.! Thanks heaps Bob. You're a legend! I don't want to bore you with a travel diary but I just have to mention a few of the highlights: the absolutely awe inspiring view of evening settling over the Remarkables (mountains) and Lake Wakitipu from the house of a friend who has just moved to Queenstown; listening to Joni as we drove through Central Otago with its lakes, rolling hills and sheep (I felt like I was on my own 'hejira'); and the wild music of the ocean pounding the Catlin coastline at Kaka Point south of Dunedin where we spent a peaceful four days. I discovered that one of New Zealand's foremost poets, Hone Tuwhare, now lives at Kaka Point. I admire his writing and have several of his books and it was a great thrill when he kindly signed a copy of his latest collection of poems for me. The 'twitchers' (bird watchers) among you might be interested to know that we were also fortunate to observe some live examples of rare NZ birds. For example we saw a takehe in a protected breeding establishment at Lake Te Anau. This is a beautiful, flightless bird (blue, green plummage and a red beak) that now only exists in the wild in a tiny colony in the mountains behing Lake Te Anau. At Dunedin we also visited a protected colony of rare yellow-eyed penguins and saw the famous albatross colony at the entrance to the harbour. It is the only mainland breeding site of these magnificent birds in the world and watching them in flight was a sight I'll never forget. Well, it looks like I have managed to bore you all with my travels. Sorry! Anyway, my family and I had a wonderful time and we all have particular memories that we will hold for a long time. My three girls all kept detailed journals. While the family budget will probably have to be tightened for a while we are all pleased we decided to go. Finally, a very big 'thank-you' to all those who wished me 'bon voyage'. I really appreciated it. I know I've probably missed heaps while I've been away and I'm looking forward to catching up with things. I'm glad to be back! Cheers to all, John (in Sydney). __________________________________________________________________ Get your free Australian email account at http://www.start.com.au ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 03 Apr 2000 09:24:12 -0600 From: Bounced Message Subject: Invitation to join Joniatpineknob From: Joniatpineknob Moderator Subject: Invitation to join Joniatpineknob Hello, This is an invitation to join the Joniatpineknob group, an email group that I moderate at eGroups, a free, easy-to-use email group service. I just got home about an hour ago. There were complications as a result of the surgery, so they kept me a few extra days (gory details below, for anyone curious). Thank you all for your love and support. Leg 2 of this journey is done. I couldn't have gotten this far without all your help. So, I'm going to go lie on the couch and get used to being in civilian clothes, having nothing beeping around me, and no one coming into my room every few mintues to check vital signs. But, since the computer was already on in the kitchen, I thought I just check in on my email... I'll send more mail tomorrow lots of love Anne THE GORY DETAILS Well, the surgery was more complicated than they expected. They found yet another tumor, as well as scattered smaller growths. They removed more than anticipated, including a lymph node. I was on a morphine drip for 2 days and seemed to be improving. Then they stopped the morphine on Thursday. By Thursday night, I was literally deathly ill (not fun, let me tell you). They ordered some tests Friday, put me back on I.V. and didn't allow me to eat or drink anything until today. There was a possibility of additional surgery, to repair what looked like an intestinal blockage, which, thank goodness, wasn't necessary. In spite of all this, I'm optimistic. I'll start chemo in about 2 weeks, once I heal a bit more from this surgery. The chemo should go on for about 4 months. Then, I'm hoping to be in remission. In the meantime, I'll be a couch potato. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 3 Apr 2000 20:35:32 EDT From: Wolfebite@aol.com Subject: Check out eGroups : jonichicago Click here: eGroups : jonichicago or: http://www.egroups.com/group/jonichicago for the mailgroup for the chicago/rosemont concert on May 30th. regards doug stapleton ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 3 Apr 2000 20:59:30 EDT From: Siresorrow@aol.com Subject: Re: Court and Spark In a message dated 4/3/00 6:44:34 PM Eastern Daylight Time, pholden@iprimus.ca writes: << Not to sound too nostalgic, but those were the days when FM radio had a certain air of mystery and magic.
